The Nathan Hughes Mystery

Sorry for the long absence. I received a promotion at work and I’ve been out of pocket recently.

Do y'all have any ideas on why Texas didn't offer Nathan Hughes? Judging by the early reports Hughes would commit on the spot if he was offered by Texas. I know the coaches told Hughes after the Junior Day that would re evaluate him during his senior season, but as the offer list grows it gets tougher for the kid not to commit to another national contender.

Hughes seems like a great back up plan for Cedric Reed. I'm not saying Texas won't secure a commitment from Reed, but he would be a nice safety net ala Corey Nelson had we been unable to sign Jordan Hicks. Additionally, with Quincy Russell's recent de- commitment, Hughes makes even more sense as he has a projectable frame as a DT if Coach Boom feels that is the best place for him.

Given the uncertainty with Marquis Anderson even understanding that he does have an offer from Texas; offering Hughes again makes sense.

I am concerned with Reed. He projects better as a 3-4 DE, and aggie has now switched to the 3-4 defense. That's a good selling point if Reed can overlook the cult -like and animal husbandry atmosphere of Bryan / College Station. I understand Reed's dad likes aggie over Texas because of the defensive scheme.

I still think Texas is a better fit for him given Coach Boom's prowess of putting defensive lineman in the League, but I am worried about Reed dragging his feet and dad becoming enamored with the Meat Judging National Champions.

I'd ask that this thread not dissolve into a Corey Nelson bashing, or aggie sucks thread. I'd like to hear what y'all have heard about where Texas is with Nathan Hughes currently, what position the coaches project Hughes at, and any new information that y'all might have on Cedric Reed commitment.

Hook ‘em.
