Marcus Thornton to Announce Decision Noon Wednesday
The only remaining target on the 2010 radar for Texas basketball is Atlanta Westlake forward Marcus Thornton as the Longhorns look to add another big to the class to establish some frontcourt depth.
Thornton will announce his decision on Wednesday at noon.
His four finalists are Alabama, Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Texas. Conventional wisdom has Thornton staying in the south (Alabama or Georgia), but the Longhorns have a fighting chance after Thornton seemed to enjoy his visit to Austin several weeks ago.

Random ACC rule seem to rule out Georgia Tech...
Apparently because he signed a letter of intent to play at Clemson, he must sit out a year to “transfer” to another ACC school, even though he was released. That rule makes absolutely no sense to me.
Me neither.
Georgia Tech can’t be happy about that rule. Apparently they have denied all 16 kids who have applied for it.

Wow that really puts a dent in their chances.
Bama and georgia look like great options for the kid, but both coaches are on the hot seat and he would almost be entrusted to fan the flames — a lot of pressure.
He was only looking at clemson because of purnell so doubt they are still in it.
I hate to say it but I think texas plus coach barnes lack of ahem coaching might do us in, and he chooses kentucky…hope not though

Now Sunkist, you posted the same response on the Moultrie thread. Don’t you think you are getting a little big greedy? Ah, screw it. Gimme too!
This
No so much Moultrie, but Thornton for sure.

What do you not like about him rBr? At the very least, he’s 6’11". I mean, damn, we REALLY need any kind of post presence right now…and this guy has legit NBA talent.
I agree, what's there not to like about Moultrie?

GoBR had an excellent preliminary assesment that caused some red flags, I'll bold them.
Despite having a somewhat disappointing sophomore season that saw Moultrie become more perimter-oriented with the addition of low-post threat Derek Character to the roster, the lanky, explosive forward is regarded as an NBA prospect due to his impressive skillset and will likely look to turn pro after his junior season.
Watching his films, there is nothing that really stands out. He doesn’t play as tall as he is. Is he explosive because he’s 6’11’ and makes dunking look easy, is it because he’s playing UTEP type competition?
What’s his rub with Tim Floyd?
Finally, Chapman and Hill are both 6’10/11’’ and I wouldnt exactly say their height is indicative of any post presence.

They don’t play defense either. And I’d LOVE to have a guy that makes dunking look easy. Because Chapman and Hill CERTAINLY have never done that. If Moultrie can dunk wide open passes from CoJo and Myck (hell, I’d settle for him catching the round, orange thing that Hill and Chap can’t seem to do half the time) and be an intimidator in the lane, he is already light years ahead of those two baboons. I couldn’t care less why he doesn’t like Tim Floyd. Most UT fans already agree with him there.
I wasn't comparing Moultrie to Chap and Hill
This is why I hate the internet. You bring up a buzzword and the boards dryhumps your whole point.
The point is 6’11’ is just a number, what you do with that number us what is important. One of the things GoBR said:
Defensively, Moultrie had a sub-par freshman season, allowing opponents to get deep post position and often getting beat off the dribble due to a lack of above-average lateral quickness and poor technique…For someone with his length, his shot-blocking ability is not as strong as might be expected because of his lack of timing and poor positioning.
So, I doubt sitting out a year of competitive ball will make him magically become “an intimidator in the lane”.
And my comment about Floyd, which you also missed, is did he just not get along with him, did they have differences on how he was going to be used, did Floyd tell Moultrie he wants him to gain 20 of muscle before next season? For some reason the relationship abruptly ended and that is significant.

You brought up multiple points...
And I addressed all of them. For starters,
Finally, Chapman and Hill are both 6’10/11’’ and I wouldnt exactly say their height is indicative of any post presence.
is a very direct comparison…
I sincerely doubt Moultrie transferred from his previous team because the new coach wanted him to gain weight, don’t you? Lastly, it’s college. a 6’11" guy is going to have a an impact inside, whether he really should or not.
need to get either at this point
I think gobr said moultrie morphed into more of a perimeter play in order to diversify the UTEP offense, work on his NBA repertoire, and to clear the lane for the better post player of the two in derrick character.
UTEP played a good schedule and its true that with the exception of memphis and maybe UAB, the rest of the CUSA teams get sloppy seconds and JUCO transfers but they are still a decent bball conference.
And I bet this Thornton kid plays in a stacked, very competitive district, comparable to the one I played in in high school in Dallas. What was it, a 5A district inthe ATL. Seems like you more or less know what you are getting in terms of judging the competition. Its not he wrecked shop in some rural town in arkansas and you wonder if he is as truly talented as his numbers say

Now a days its not that important whether or not you play against top talent
on your high school team when you can do that in the AAU circuit. Most players make their name during the summer tournaments as that is when the college coaches are the road scouting/recruiting.
Sports is man's joke on God, You see, God says to man, 'I've created a universe where it seems like everything matters, where you'll have to grapple with life and death and in the end you'll die anyway, and it won't really matter.' So man says to God, 'Oh, yeah? Within your universe we're going to create a sub-universe called sports, one that absolutely doesn't matter, and we'll follow everything that happens in it as if it were life and death.'" - Sam Kellerman
