Longhorns Baseball Extends Win Streak To 19

A record regular season open thread for a record win streak for the Texas Longhorns baseball team.  UT defeated Baylor 2-1 in 14 innings on Saturday night to extend their winning streak to 19 games--including 16 straight in Big 12 play, tying Texas A&M for the longest win streak in conference history.  Should the 'Horns win again tomorrow, it would be their fifth straight sweep of a Big 12 opponent and they'll have the all-time record all to themselves.

A night after drawing a bases loaded walk to win in Waco in the 10th inning, Paul Montalbano Jordan Weymouth--brought in to pinch hit for a struggling Connor Rowe--failed on two bunt attempts before slicing an RBI double down the left field line to score Tant Shepherd in the 14th inning. (Late night brain fart: Monty scored the game-winning run tonight after leading off the inning with a double.)  After a sloppy 9th inning robbed Cole Green of another complete game gem, freshman southpaw Hoby Milner was brilliant in extra innings to keep the Bears at bay until Texas could plate another run.

First pitch in Game 3 versus Baylor is at 2:30 p.m. CT on Sunday. Game is being televised (at least locally) on Fox College Sports.

Weymouth had the RBI double; Montalbano was the actual scoring run

Hobbes881 is correct. Montalbano had a double to start things off, but Weymouth was the one who doubled down the line to score Montalbano.

Just as I shake his hand, Weymouth wins us the game. I sit there for over four hours and saw every play but the last. Great game regardless…

This team is special...

no question about it. The pitching simply amazes at times.

fox college sports

the channel is available in Austin?
I wasn’t able to find it the last time we were on against the Aggies. Which channel is it?

If you have Time Warner Cable

It’s channel 432, but I believe it’s only available with a sports package subscription.

Also, the replay of last night’s game will be at 5 PM on ESPNU today for anyone who missed it or wants to watch it again.

What to make of Weymouth again?

Etier and Rowe are a combined 2-17 with 11 strikeouts this series. I can live with one of them bringing great defense while only occasionally contributing with the bat, but both has proven devastating. I’m not sure what Weymouth has to do to get extended playing time, but part of me also loves the idea of using him for clutch pinch hit situations.

Meanwhile, team ERA is now 2.22 after 14 innings without an earned run. Closest team is UCLA (2.84).

It's just too late in the season

Tinkering with the middle infield is tricky, especially at this juncture. As good as Etier is defensively and as well as he and Loy work together, I just don’t see Weymouth getting a shot defensively this year. But Augie always finds a way to reward young players who step up when called upon. Weymouth can ask Connor Rowe about that. He was in a similar situation as a freshman in 2008, when our veteran outfielders were stinking it up.

I was actually thinking Weymouth should replace Rowe

Walla in CF is a downgrade but not as much as Weymouth over Etier at 2B, plus Rowe got jumpstarted the last time he was replaced in the lineup by Walsh. Just a thought.

Weymouth is an infielder though

If he replaces anyone, it will be Kevin Lusson or Jordan Etier. He has started at 3rd a couple of times and mostly PHes for Etier. If we’d had to go one more AB last night, Jonathan Walsh was on deck to bat for Etier, so he probably would’ve gone into left, Walla would’ve moved to center for Rowe, and Weymouth would have played at 2nd for Etier.

Speaking of Weymouth … video

And Preston Clark was a catcher

I think Weymouth could probably play left and Augie has shown a propensity to use infielders flexibly interchangably as outfielders.
