Great find, Sunkist
And great work Mack, Will, whoever else was in on this recruiting him!!!!!!!!
That was... easy?
After he said that he couldn’t make it to camp last week, I didn’t think that he would commit until after he visited Austin again.
I guess he just wanted to save some gas money since he already knew where he was going next year.
Awesome news.
Gerry Hamilton is reporting the same thing. Great pick-up. I wonder how much this commitment has to do with the offer that was made to David Jenkins from Carollton.
Great News
This years recruiting class is great!!!
What happens with David Jenkins now?
Can't Imagine
that Texas would withdraw that offer even though they got their number one cornerback target. Now what happens with Charles Jackson? The coaches told him that they’d get back to him one way or the other in the next week. They must have known this huge commitment was coming this weekend. Great day for the Longhorns!
Jackson is a great athlete
but the risk on Turner academically, athletically, and character evaluation has to be higher. I wander how much Jackson’s grade issues plays into all this after the recent Christian Scott, Brandon Collins, and D.J. Monroe issues took their toll last year? I personally like everything I see on Jenkins and think he would be an overall better fit for the team. I see Jackson going ou. Seems to be a better fit for him. The big qustion I have now is where does Quandre Diggs end up if Jenkins does come aboard. Diggs could be the next Earl Thomas?
Akina will try all of the DB/ATH commits
at cornerback and see who sticks, including Diggs. A commitment from Jenkins I think increases the probability that Diggs ends up on offense, but he really wants to play defensive back, either safety or cornerback because he knows he has to play there to make the League.
I have to think that they really want three true cornerbacks out of this group and for someone like Thompson to succeed at a position like nickel back would be preferable but I think he’s a safety. Scott and Turner clearly cornerbacks, leaving Evans and Diggs as the question marks right now.
One of them should stick there. I still like Evans at safety because of his range, though some people don’t think he tackles well enough and I think the jury is still out there. I think Akina would much rather have him at corner, so he will have every chance there and that would fit better perhaps for Diggs to play at safety.
My growing sense of Diggs though is that people underestimate him at their own risk. This is a great group of players and it will be intriguing to see what happens with Jenkins.

+1 on Diggs
My growing sense of Diggs though is that people underestimate him at their own risk.
I really think when all is said and done with this entire class that Diggs will be in the top 3 takes this year. That’s saying a lot with the likes of Westerman, Edmonds, Desmond Jackson, Evans, Turner, and Scott. I will go so far as to even include M Brown, A Green, and Rasco if he is still even in the mix. Diggs is a playmaker bar none.
The grade issue for Charles
is over blown. There is a difference in a kid not taking his academics serious early in his high school career and a kid not having the ability. I know of one other Horn commit that is a bigger grade risk than Charles.
What the grades did cost Charles is an early offer, Texas now must decide how many corners they will take, and Charles is no longer a sure thing for Texas. Had he gotten the offer earlier he would have pulled the trigger and now he is seriously considering going elsewhere.
It won’t be catastrophic, the guy can be an impact corner in college, but he is a victim as much as Mack’s desire to have his classes closed out as soon as possible as any other factors.

Think Charles is on Outside Looking In Now
I cannot imagine an offer for Charles Jackson is forthcoming now that Turner has committed. It is hard to believe that the Horns would take 7 DBs (assuming Thompson and Diggs are DBs) in one class.
Agreed and think he is OU bound.
As said before, Texas makes a large number of offers on Junior Day based upon prior camp performances and evaluations and they will invariably miss on a few kids that they have either overlooked or dramatically improved. It won’t kill the program by any stretch, but just as Texas effectively cost themselves Stonum they most likely will cost themselves Jackson.

Well
I think this increases the chances that Jenkins and the staff decide to move in different directions, but there’s a reason the coaches offered him last week and I can’t imagine that the only reason for that was to hedge their bets with Turner — they had to willing to take both to offer Jenkins.

Huge news!
That’s one major need more or less covered… Anything else at DB is gravy.

Inside Texas' take:
http://insidetexas.com/news/story.php?article=2456
"When we first pulled up to the stadium I was like, ‘Wow is this real?’ You only see it on TV," Turner said after his visit. "It was great. Coach (Duane) Akina gave us a tour around the building and at night we were accompanied by Demarco Cobbs."
Turner said he leaned on Cobbs for his opinion on Texas and even in early April he liked the potential of making Texas his college choice.
"He seemed like he loved it down there," said Turner, who took in as much as he could from the Longhorn defensive backs he talked to during his visit. "We talked to some of the other players – A.J. White showed us the dorms. We went over some schemes and stuff like that.
"Overall," Turner added, "it was a great experience."

Nebraska
Grreat player—we definitely needed this guy as a DB. Akina will make him a star in the League.
Very interesting that he said his decision came down to Texas and NU.
"It was real hard because I loved my trip to Nebraska, but I just feel Texas is the right fit for me," Turner said. "The players were great, and the atmosphere was great. I’m excited, but yeah, it was a real hard decision."
I guess this is our first victory over NU since the D.I.V.O.R.C.E. I sure hope that this is a precurser to a commit from A. Green.
Is Quincy Russell still in the picture now?
After this commit and the offer to David Jenkins, one has to wonder how many can we take? I see Russell as a NU threat as well with the whole Green thing going on. Puzzling.
I have to assume Mack has a plan...
But it’ll be interesting to see what happens with some of these existing offers. Some really good players could see themsleves on the outside if the dominoes start falling.

Russell still in play
Of the two defensive line offers out there, Russell is clearly the bigger need and no other school has really emerged for him. Nebraska is certainly a threat, but he’s been so silent about any leaders that the only thing out there really is that he got caught up in the moment enough to commit at the Texas spring game spending time with his potential teammates and even though he changed his mind the next day, that’s the only obvious separation right now.
If he truly wants to stay close to home due to the circumstances with his mother, then Nebraska slides back down again. Plus, he forgot his jacket and got cold at the Texas spring game. Not to question his toughness, but when a Texas kid has a chance to play in Texas all fall or make a trip through the Rust Belt, which one sounds more appealing?

We're still a long way from February
We’re still four shy of the 25 limit. And the coaches get paid the big bucks to keep their ducks in a row.
that's what is making me wonder who on the commit list isn't going to be enrolled
maybe an instate lower ranked OT or two are willing to greyshirt to help the numbers. Something isn’t adding up…or is adding up a bit hight.
We still want Q Russell and M. Brown. If we are serious about ASJ and A. Green, that makes 25 right there. Not sure what happens after that…assuming we can land Thunder and LIghtning together.
That makes 25 right there is right.

But no David Jenkins in that equation. If he commits will that bounce someone?

provided we get brown
I would rather have David Jenkins than Green. Since Green will probably wait until February to decide, we should have the opportunity to take all four of those guys over him first and by then we’ll know if there’s a spot left for Green.
in everything i just said
replace david jenkins with charles jackson
is Malcolm Brown still an option?
I had heard he has been crossed off. Not paying money to find out either. Does anyone know?
Not sure where you heard that
But no. I haven’t seen anywhere that didn’t consider us the odds on favorite to land Malcolm.
i think the problem is the total number of 85
not the 25 per class
Yes, they can go toward filling the gap to 25 last year
I just read that McFarland is planning to enroll early. Still leaves the 85 number as an issue.
The 85 IS a problem. At least on paper.
We project to about 90 players at this time next year (we’re at 85 now, 21 current commitments, about 16 seniors) . . . Attrition of 5 won’t be terribly difficult. . . . It begins to get cozy tight if we sign a class of 25 . . . but I don’t believe Mack will sign 25 if doesn’t know where the attrition is coming from.
Attriction can come from: (1) early-outs to the NFL; (2) academic issues; (3) players placed in non-playing status (injuries); (4) those who opt to transfer . . . but it also can come from the decision not to keep the player on scholarship. Tthis can happen at any class level; seems to me it’s prominent on limited- or non-contributing players who aren’t granted a fifth season (there were two of those this winter/spring).
Turner said it was a tough decision between Texas and Nebraska.
Sorry, Bo. Recruiting might start to get a little tougher in this region.

Awesome news
That is outstanding. Glad he committed early. Lets us focus on those last few spots.
Probably 3 more? Brown still thinking he will make the decision by end of summer?
Nice to talk some football without any conference expansion involved!

Brown will probably make a decision by September.

Malcolm Brown?
Anyone have a good feel for where he stands? I’m trying to stay optimistic. Yet every once in awhile I see someone state that they know he’s leaning towards Bama. with almost every recruit I don’t worry about it…but boy would it be great to get M. Brown.
Question..
Does anyone know if OU is still in his top schools???
Hard to say
I think they are probably fading because they are pretty well set at running back. As far as I know, he still has an offer from the Sooners.
by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Jun 20, 2010 8:48 PM CDT up reply actions
Sooners already have B Williams
Plus they have Clay and Finch from last year and they are both top notch. It wouldn’t make much sense for Brown to pick OU. I don’t think that OU is high on his list. I think it is between us and Bama. Brown and Green did say they would enjoy playing together since their attributes compliment each other.
