Horns Going Fast in the MLB Draft
[UPDATE: The Nationals win Tuesday, drafting Connor Rowe and Russell Moldenhauer in the 21st and 24th rounds respectively (in addition to Kevin Keyes in the 7th). Things are looking good that Tant Shepherd will return for a senior season since he is yet to be drafted].
The talent of the 2008 Kiddie Corps has been on full display in the MLB draft. Four Horns were drafted in the first four rounds and five have been drafted overall:
1A) #48 Chance Ruffin -- Detroit
2) #57 Brandon Workman -- Boston
3) #108 Cameron Rupp -- Philly
4) #133 Cole Green -- Detroit
7) #206 Kevin Keyes -- Washington
Recruit Mike Foltynewicz went #19 to the Astros, likely signifying the end of his association with Texas -- the University at least -- but no other Texas baseball commits have been drafted through 12 rounds.

The fact that he has a lot to prove
could also be a reason to take the 7th round money while it’s there. But yeah, I’m pretty sure he is the only one of this bunch that will even consider coming back.
Not really recommended
for juniors to come back if they can get decent money because they lose all their leverage as seniors. I think it’s in his best interests to go pro, as much as I think he could benefit from coming back.

Were any other signees supposed to go high?
Or was Folty the only one we expected to lose this time around?
Folty was the most likely
Some people felt that Jacob Felts was a top 100-type of guy, but I think there were signability concerns for everyone other than Folty. Still worried about the damn Pirates though until the draft is over…

What site can I look at to see the Horns baseball recruiting class?
Maybe he has what it takes to turn the franchise around!

Just picked him up for my fantasy roster
I hope he throws a gem even though he will be on a pitch count.

Workman drops to 2nd round?
I saw him projected as high as first overall not that long ago. Can anyone explain what happened?

hard to tell exactly.
Injury history is definitely one. I’ve read concerns about Augie’s lack of discretion with pitch counts. I always thought Workman threw in the 96mph range, but the scouting reports I’ve read have him listed at 93-94.
Also, the MLB draft is just a crapshoot that no one really knows who is going to go where due to signability concerns and how much money teams want to pay their first round picks.
Probably control issues
both with his fastball and sometimes not having a feel for his curveball. Changeup is a work in progress as well. That would be my guess.

Yeah he doesn't have a position
Maybe an AL team will take a flyer on him. I feel badly for him because he probably should have taken his second-round money and gone pro, at least financially. Without a position, not sure how much success he could have had in the minors, but he probably cost himself a significant amount of money.

Anyone can be a right fielder

Anyone can be a left fielder
The right fielder has to make the throws across the field to keep runners from advancing from second to third. The right fielder typically has the strongest arm on the team, along with the third baseman and the catcher, hence why Bryce Harper is moving from catcher to right field.
The guys with noddle arms like Juan Pierre and Scott Podsednik all play left.

Hm.
Sarcasm meter obviously missed that one.

Just think when you were 8
They put the kid that would pick the flowers out in right field. That’s where I was going with it.

I know Rowe has a great glove
but why would you draft a guy who strikes out all the time over a player with a plus bat, even if he doesn’t have a position? The late rounds are pretty throwaway for the most part, but that’s just strange to me. There’s no chance that Rowe could ever hack at even the lowest levels of the minors because he’s going to continue fighting a losing battle against his back leg for as long as he picks up a baseball bat. I feel like I’m missing something here.
Will be nice to have Shepherd back though next season — he should be the best hitter on the team unless one of the freshmen comes on strongly. Could make an argument for Walla, but he seems to have a hole in his swing.
