Longhorns Go Wild, Steve Young Chimes In
What a summer it's been for former Longhorn football players...
First, VY lashes out at some fool who makes the singularly stupid mistake of flashing that weakest of all hand signs at him. You know the hand sign that is first cousin to "t.u.", that weakest of all retorts...
Then, Ced Benson allegedly punches a Sixth Street barkeep, then gets arrested for it a month later. I don't know the circumstances of the events of that fateful night, but if the Library's bar tenders were indicative of your average Sixth Street 'keeps, I don't know what Benson was thinking.
Finally, there's Phil's son who was arrested last night (or this morning) for driving under the influence of marijuana.
"Smoking pot and driving? What's that if not the result of growing up in a laissez-faire atmosphere?"
I have no idea what has gotten into these UT guys. VY gets some props for not allowing the brand to be besmirched, but then again, it was 3 a.m. at a scrip club. Nothing good happens at 3 a.m. at a scrip club.
That's 3 former Longhorn greats (Phil's son gets the nod only by "association") who have run afoul of the law and it's only July 1st.
Summer has 2 months left, plenty of time for say, Dusty Mangum to get picked up for breaking and entering.

“Smoking pot and driving? What’s that if not the result of growing up in a laissez-faire atmosphere?”
I assume that’s a Steve Young quote, given the context?
if so, is that a slap at Phil (“growing up in”)?
I'd like to know that too
Is he pointing towards Phil Simms or UT? Either one would be a bit silly given Chris’ age, but to blame UT for that would be even more ridiculous. It’s not like Chris’ experience at Texas was all sugar and roses.

So I paraphrased a little bit...
on some comments Young made a few years ago about Simms having the mental toughness required to handle the NFL, considering he grew up in a “laissez-faire atmosphere”, or something like that.
Phil, of course didn’t like that very much.
Don't forget
Vondrell McGee back in April. Eventful offseason.

Don't want to google this at work
and I may be a tad naive here, but what is a scrip club?

per urban dictionary
a nightclub or other establishment featuring striptease performances, formerly called strip club but renamed thanks to Pacman Jones.
It comes from this awesome interview:
Many thanks to you
and to Pacman Jones as well.

Pretty small-time
I know you should never drive under the influence of anything, but these all seem to be pretty small-time occurences. These guys are not Ben Roth, or Michael Irvin, Kobe, or OJ……. By themselves, none of these things even makes the news except for VY, and only because he has had issues before. It is just that they all happened so close together.
All that said, I am not very happy with the way these guys are making us look right now.
For those who want a pick-me-up, see the story on the Acho Brothers.

I agree with all of what you just said.

But... this is the internet. You have to argue.

Benson's had far more issues than VY
I don’t think VY’s really had issues, though. Just the Jeff Fisher leak.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Dusty Mangum?
I was guessing Aaron Humphrey, at the truck stop, with the can of whoopass.

Initiating "abort Clue joke" sequence...

Austin is a party town
So if a player is in Austin for 4-5 years its likely they will pick up some party habits!
I still respect VY for what he did. He just needs to go home before 12:00 am.
a&m had a DB get a DUI a few months ago, but nobody cares because we haven’t heard of him (like most a&m players). I think Fuller was with him.
I'm not sure what you're suppose to do
after a player leaves school the university has no control. You hope that person goes out into the world and represents their alma mater with class, but if not there’s little to be done. Maybe a fellow alum could reach out to offer guidance, but that’s about it.
As far as a college player having issues that’s up to the coach to discipline by demoting, taking playing time, booting off the team or……. locking in an electrical storage closet.
the Simms thing just made me laugh
the fact that he was driving under the influence with his pregnant wife in the car makes it a hundred times worse, though
btw
I think it is a lot more damaging when something happens when they’re a student under the guidance of the institution than when they’re out on their own
You would hope by this point, Simms would be mature enough to know to stay away from drugs.
Someone introduce Simms to K-2, and fast.
better yet
sneak some salvia into his pipe and scare him straight
