Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

According to Gerry Hamilton of 247 Sports, when a group of Texas Longhorn commits got together for a picture at the Gridiron Kings 7-on-7 event in Florida, Gig Harbor (WA) TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins jumped in and flashed his 'Horns as well.

The news only confirms suspicions that the big tight end is a strong commitment possibility when he visits Austin August 6-7 and (almost certainly) receives his offer.

AS-J is joined in Florida by Texas commits Chet Moss, Quandre Diggs, Jaxon Shipley, Kendall Thompson, Josh Turner, Sheroid Evans, and Miles Onyegbule.

While ASJ is going to be a very nice feather in the cap...

but if Brown or Green both pass on the Horns, I fear we are in deep doo doo.

That was my question

Were either Brown or Green there, and if so, what did they do when the Longhorn group was together?
Great news on ASJ though.

Actually

both are in Virginia at the Top Gun camp.

by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Jul 24, 2010 5:33 PM CDT up reply actions

That's a good safe place for them

I really get the sense that they will commit to Texas and we will be hearing announcers constantly talk about how Thunder and Lightning are roomates and help each other at practice. Maybe just wishful thinking, but announcing together during their big game against each would be cool.

by Wrangler86 on Jul 24, 2010 6:33 PM CDT up reply actions

Let Shead or anyone else do it then. The line is going to be ridiculous in 2-3 years. Brown would be nice, but there are enough quality rock toters on hand already to have one of those RBs make or break this class. That being said, I do check BON every morning and am saddened when I see that another day has passed without a commitment from either of those guys. Crazy good talents.

by Tackchevy on Jul 24, 2010 5:38 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

I'm in agreement with this

I’m sure Brown’s all-world, but Whaley and Shead aren’t exactly out of place talent-wise.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Seriously though

I would be really excited if we got one of these types of kids. I watched Brandon Pettigrew, and Jermaine Gresham and have always wanted UT to have a target like that. This kid would have a chance to be that type of weapon.

Don’t get me wrong, he would have a long way to go, and hell, he might end up a Tackle in the long run, but he would have a chance.

TEs

It does seem that we have usually been on the losing end of TE matchups, and it would be nice for us to have some serious healthy talent at TE.

ASJ Weight

Per Gerry on the link GoBR provided:

Austin Sefarian-Jenkins just said he is weighing 264-pounds right now

264 lbs. entering his senior year of highschool. I believe he has been playing basketball so his current weight may actually be down because of that. He sure doesn’t seem to be carrying any bad weight. I know he is dead set on TE, but I just don’t see him sticking there. Which begs the question if we need another OT (and a project OT at that) in this class.

by Horncasting on Jul 24, 2010 5:58 PM CDT reply actions

For comparison

Gresham and Pettigrew were both 230 when they signed with OU and OSU. David Thomas and J. Finley were 210. Tony Hills was 260.

by Horncasting on Jul 24, 2010 6:07 PM CDT up reply actions

I was just looking that up....

They were both 6’6"-6’7" as well. That is a big difference, but he was listed at 250 last season. Still a little heavy and not going in the right direction.

But the staff will get to make the call. If he is athletic enough to play TE at 260, wow. BTW, Pettigrew is now in the NFL and he weighs….. 265. Gresham also weighed in for the draft at….265.

Jason Peters was a stud blocking TE

at Arkansas and reported as a freshman at 6-5 275 (as a DE recruit) and ended up playing at over 300, so there is that.

Of course Peters is now an OT for Philadelphia.

by Horncasting on Jul 24, 2010 6:45 PM CDT up reply actions

Hills was a 5-star TE as well, wasn't he?

And of course I don’t think he played even a single down at TE for UT.

A lot of that had to do with the catastrophic knee injury

he suffered in high school. In fact, Hills had similar nerve damage in his knee to what Irby suffered from after his injury and made a pretty miraculous comeback to even be able to play at all.

David Thomas had an injury last year in HS and lost a lot of weight

(one report said down to 190) before he enrolled. It took a while before he gained it all back.

If he gets on campus and Mack & Co. evaluate him as to heavy and slow for TE is it possible that we do not offer him?

I am going to do you the biggest favor of your life son. Redshirt your freshman year, hit the weight room, and become the best LT in Longhorn history. You see son, LT make like eleventy million dollars more than TEs.

by SwimTexas on Jul 24, 2010 7:32 PM CDT reply actions

Part of that is just perspective

he’s farther back and leaning in. Oneygbule is 6-4 and should look a little larger than he is, being closest to the lens. Next look at their waist lines. And for bulk size, look at their calves and biceps on what are all well-developed athletes. Obviously, he has very low body fat; 270-275 looks like a realistic playing weight.

Now that gives wings to an EBS. Boy, will he wreck some DBs’ dreams of grandeur.

by whills on Jul 24, 2010 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

ASJ

is the slowest recruit on tape I have ever seen. I do not see any way he will ever play TE in college unless it is solely as a blocker. The guy is an OL.

by miketag on Jul 24, 2010 7:56 PM CDT reply actions

Best time I saw was a 4.68.

Not bad for his size but don’t know if that can be improved at all. Jerry Rice was a 4.6 runner and he turned out ok because he was also 4.6 at the end of the game as well. Maybe AS-F has football speed. That level of speed at 270 going full on up the middle is a hell of a lot of wrecking force.

Aside from OT, he could be a Too Tall Jones/Mad Stork Hendricks type of DE if he had a great first step and the Horns weren’t so loaded at that position.

by whills on Jul 24, 2010 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

He did look pretty slow on tape

but he was playing reciever mostly if I remember…..

I just keep thinking, this kid is not an unknown. Everyone has seem him on tape. He has been to several camps. And he is still a national top 50 recruit at TE. They all must see SOMETHING they like.

Having said that. I don’t know how I feel about taking him if he is gonna end up at OT. We gave up on Hegarty because we were done with OL’s. Hutchins and Doyle are already in there as long term project OLs. If we pick up AS-J and he ends up being a project OT, then what have we gained.

"A lot of people look for the easy way to do anything, in swimming there is no easy way." - Eddie Reese

by SwimTexas on Jul 24, 2010 8:42 PM CDT up reply actions

My first question is usually: is the kid a football player?

If he is, we’ll find a place.

I just watched some videos. He’s not fast as a WR, a slow starter, but has good hands and is difficult to cover in the red zone and short, first-down type of passes.

The other thing I really liked is that he was a hell of a down field blocker. Didn’t see much as a true TE on LOS, but then he was usually split out.

The real question is if he can see things for what they are, despite what he might hope for himself as the ideal position. If he’s that mature, he can help the team.

by whills on Jul 24, 2010 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

I Don´t Get It

LT is prolly second highest (maybe 3rd) paid position in football. If he truly runs a 4.8 it just wouldn´t be right to keep him at TE. This kid could carry 320 lbs and remind everyone of Jonathan Ogden. I guess when you have great hands it is hard to give up the receiver aspect of football.

by realmccoy on Jul 24, 2010 9:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Take it Back

Brandon Pettigrew ran a 4.85 at the 2009 combine and was a first round draft pick. He measured a shade over 6-5 and weighed 263. So physically, looks like AS-J could easily be a top 15 pick in the NFL.

by realmccoy on Jul 24, 2010 9:24 PM CDT up reply actions

Pettigrew was that size and speed after being in a college S&C program

players normally get bigger and stronger in college, and put on weight

AS-J probably projects at 300 lbs in college, easily

LTs is the second-highest paid position in pro football

QB is the highest paid as the leader of the team, LT is second-highest as the protector of the blindside of the leader of your team

I notice that the only two negative nancies on these threads are the neighborhood Aggies. BG, while your points are relevant, your desire to have your own Third OT that can run and catch is shining through here.

I have track star WRs three deep, what really complements that is a guy that cannot be covered by any of the athletes that would be out there to match up against those track stars.

Say your prayers for this Thanksgiving- it might be the last time that you have a chance for a while with the way recruiting has been going.

by Tackchevy on Jul 25, 2010 11:11 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

As much as it pains me to say

I agree with Beergut on this. The kid looks to have the potential to be an epic OT. I can understand if the kid has more fun at TE and would prefer to stay there, but he could add a lot more value (and have more earning potential) at tackle.

by LongCat on Jul 26, 2010 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions

He only projects at 300

If he eats his way there. The kid may be fully physically developed at this point and may only add 10 lbs over his college career. He may also have some bad weight that he sheds and adds lean muscle. Everything you are projecting is based off of different people in different programs and he is none of them.

Also, he may not be thinking NFL dollars yet. If he realizes that 2 years in and wants to make the change then by all means. However, he can make a great attached TE right now.

it was as a receiver...

And compared to other WR’s you are right…he’s slow. But compared to a tight end who can line up and block people too? He can’t possibly be the slowest recruit we’ve ever had. Hell, Major ran a 5.1 for goodness sakes.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins
He elected not to weigh in at the event, but his massive frame was simply remarkable. He caught every ball that was thrown his direction and didn’t bobble a single pass the entire event, and his massive hands are a big reason why. His speed and fluidity were tremendous throughout all drills, and he definitely solidified himself as one of the nation’s top tight ends.

Texas has the best strength and conditioning coach and facility in the nation. If he has the desire to stay at TE he could do so.

by shnsajax on Jul 25, 2010 10:08 AM CDT reply actions

Dude is a ballplayer

Could definitely do well at OT or TE. His atheticism and skill set give him a world beater upside at TE, though.

I envision an EBS that can block like Uli and catches everything. Basically the opposite of EBS.

If you want a speed TE, play Matthews in a 2 TE set. This guy would be a menace in run support and excellent for short to medium conversion passes, as well as a go-to red zone solution.

by Tackchevy on Jul 25, 2010 11:01 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

He looked like a slow OL

Running down the field in his videos. May just be that he is still growing and developing his coordination. Just read on espn that he said he would quit football before playing OT. My guess is that UW offers him a shot at TE and he goes there. He is on the OL after a redshirt year. He may have run a 4.68 for some scout but on the field he is definitely over 5.0 on the field. Opinions differ, but I’m just not a fan of this guy at TE at all. If he did go to Austin as a TE IMO he would sit for three years behind Barrett Matthews. Matthews is what a college TE is supposed to look like.

by miketag on Jul 26, 2010 5:47 AM CDT via mobile reply actions

Seriously,

First of all Barrett Matthews hasn’t played a down at TE in a meaningful situation yet. I would LOVE it if he was good enough to hold the position on lock for 3 years, but lets hold off on pretending that we know that.

Second, Barrett Matthews is 6’2" tall. For you to say definitavely that is what a TE is supposed to look like is ludicrous.

Third, if a recruit sees Barrett Matthews in front of him and says “I don’t want to play there”, then we don’t want him. Every position should have fierce competition and multiple top national players competing for time. That is how you become great.

Fourth, he looked pretty slow in the video I will grant you, but he was being defended by corners and safeties. He was plenty fast to play TE in college if he runs good routes. Bottom line will probably be, if he maintains his weight he will play TE, if he doesn’t he won’t.

Others seem to value him as both a TE and a player.

The 4.68 is from scout.com.

In this Yahoo Sports piece two months ago there’s more consideration of him, including his statement on how fast he is:

It was another important step to pick up an offer because almost everyone who sees Seferian-Jenkins work out immediately recognizes he’s arguably the best tight end nationally. He was by far the best player at the recent Eugene NIKE Camp – regardless of position.

"[UT TE Coach Bruce](Chambers) came up and it was good," Seferian-Jenkins said. "It was really nice. I couldn’t really speak to him but I had a good impression. He seemed like a good guy. He talked to my coach, watched my film and he liked it and then he came out and watched me do my agility work. I had two good 40-times for my size so I was really excited.

"He said, ‘This guy is a freak athlete.’ I’m 260 pounds, I run a 4.65, so that’s pretty good and my coach said that (Chambers) said he’s excited for Austin to come down to Austin to show everyone else what he saw. He’s really excited, I’m really excited and it’s going to be a really good experience."

So it will come down to the visit to Austin regardless of our opinions. Looks like he may be peaking in physical maturity, which means he can maintain where he is as far as weight is concerned and could improve his agility and speed, particularly his start. We’ll see before long.

This is the kind of player that I would have see personally before I formed any firm opinion, but so many schools seeing and offering him is definitely a leading indicator.

by whills on Jul 26, 2010 7:13 PM CDT up reply actions

A slow OL?

Come on, man. That is just not objective at all. Also, you are insinuating that his options are pretty much going to come down to getting a chance to play TE at UDub and thats it? You are way off base here, man.
