Thoughts on Texas football at College Football Zealots
Head on over to College Football Zealots for some of my thoughts on the upcoming football season and be sure to read some of the other previews there, which are as in-depth as you will find for a nationally-oriented site.
As food for thought, both Phil Steele and Athlon have the 'Horns ending up in the Cotton Bowl. Would a Cotton Bowl berth represent a disastrous season for Texas, as it would probably come on the heels of three or so losses?

Horns Vastly and Dangerously Underrated
My expectations for this team include a shot at the MNC. Preseason magazines tend to overestimate the return of an average junior and underestimate the development of an uber talented sophmore or rFr. This year reminds me of 2008 where my eternal pessimism figured that all those freshman in the secondary would kill our chances of a 10 win season. Who were Earl Thomas, Blake Gideon, AJ, and Curtis Brown? Damn fine athletes that developed and played well enough to almost get us to the MNC.
This year, all that needs to happen for a shot – Garret Gilbert (a 5 star recruit) needs to play very solid football and be better than Landry Jones. Tre Newton needs the opportunity to show that he is one of the most underrated backs in the country. GD needs to scheme the run game a lil better – defense will be the best in the country. We may get more contributions from Freshman than any other major power in the country.
Yeah, I feel the same way about this season
The team is bursting with talent, and even with a few gaffs, we’ll stumble to 11 wins. If the offense develops any kind of a pulse, we’ll be knocking on the national championship’s door.
We’ll need a little luck though, but hell, who doesn’t.
Would the Cotton Bowl be a disaster?
If we beat OU and blow the South again, yes.
If we get battered by injuries and open the season 3-3, the Cotton Bowl would be a solid accomplishment. And still a letdown. I believe UT’s program is now BCS bowl or bust.
I worry less about replacing the departed seniors (and ET) than the four-game stretch that will define the season before the middle of October. New faces not only have to be good (I believe they will be), they have to grow up super fast and they have to be consistent early on. I wonder how likely that is.
I think you're right about OU and the South
I think ten wins should be the expectation. I don’t think UT will be in the national championship hunt this year, but should definitely be in the BCS bowl hunt even if the offense doesn’t really hum along like it did under Vince and Colt.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

In GD I trust ...WHAT?
Before anyone launches a diatribe on what a dweeb GD is – lets analyze his performance AS A QB COACH! He tailored the offense to take a very raw Vince Young and turn him into the highest rated passing QB in the nation. All while utilizing his unbelievable running skills. He took a non-descript recruit from Podunk High and turned him into the best QB in the nation. In addition, the scrawny rFr was outstanding in his initial year. I have zero doubt that Gilbert will answer the bell and be extremely effective his Soph year.
I think much more of GD than most here do
And I think he’s unfairly become the football pariah of Burnt Orange Nation. That said, I’m not laying the blame largely on him. I just think the offense is lacking in proven players and experience, and because of that, I expect a dropoff. There’s not a single WR or RB who brings enough to the table yet to be a season-maker, and Gilbert’s unproven as well. The offensive line is two guys from a unit that wasn’t terribly impressive last year, plus three guys who weren’t even good enough to start in that same unit that wasn’t terribly impressive last year.

We're Undefeated - time for optimism
I agree we don’t have a proven commodity, but we have freakish talents that could develop into beasts. WRs Goodwin and Williams could be beast like. Tre Newton and Fozzy have flashed brilliance. DJ and Hales – who knows? Don’t be surprised if we get something from the frosh. The OL can’t be significantly worse than last year – and we are now a downhill running team that fits their style.
CFN projected the Horns at 9-3 last year
They had Texas losing to OU, Missouri, and Okie Lite.
So I’ve seen this movie. None of us believed that would be the case then, it’s hard to to get worked up about it now.
Writers get paid to write, no matter how clueless or lazy they may be.
I think 10-3
is likely. Do not know how anyone can predict less than 10 wins. Course, maybe Texas has a season like OU did last year where everyone important gets injured and you go 8-5. All depends on injuries and luck. I think it is much more likely that Traylon Shead takes over at RB than Tre Newton shows he is a world beater.
Q&A with College Football Zealots
I just wanted to stop by and say thanks for doing the Q&A with my site. My website is still very young as this is only the 4th month we’ve been doing this. That being said we’ve done 46 “Pre-Season Previews” and yours has by far received the most hits thanks to the link on your site. That shows you guys are running a great site with some very passionate fans.
As an SEC/UGA fan I’m a little bummed that Texas didn’t end up in the SEC as I think it would have been fun adding them and A&M to the mix.
Thanks again
Kevin
Just playing D's A here: If we beat
OU and Nebraska beats us, why is that disastrous?
It’s our goal to beat them; if we don’t, we’re at fault. This might be different if Nebraska was clearly inferior talent-wise, but that isn’t the case.
