Open Practices Thread
I think we need to get a thread going here for observations on the open practices. I'll start, with a few random thoughts from last night's practice:
- Noticed a good number of downhill running plays, several of which resulted in about 5-yard gains.
- I agree that the backup QBs look even at this point. Connor Wood does look like a quintessential QB, but Case is much more developed physically than Colt was at his age.
- Keenan Robinson was playing great, and seemed to have a great attitude as well.
- Mike Davis got some reps with the first group.
- Nolan Brewster looked like he wasn't feeling well. In fact, a few of players seemed wiped out from the heat and insane humidity.
- Didn't see anything impressive from Chiles or Kirkendoll, but Goodwin and M. Williams looked good (despite a Williams drop. . .)
- Christian Scott had a couple of impressive hits, until Mack drew him aside presumably to say "ease off on your teammates!" The dude is gonna be awesome. So is Aaron Williams, who looked fantastic.
- Timmons showed ability to get open against the second group.
- Okafor is an impressive physical specimen.
- Gideon is obviously a great leader.

I think Wood is ahead of McCoy
Not lightyears ahead, but enough that I feel like Wood is probably already presumed to be the backup, even if the coaches refuse to publicly acknowledge it.
Gilbert looked good. He had some off moments, but it’s practice. I feel good about his ability to run the offense. The offensive line … let’s hope they play better in full pads or it’s not going to matter what Gilbert is capable of.
Jackson Jeffcoat was beastly. I think we’re going to see him early and often.
We have an embarrassment of riches in the talent department when it comes to our receiving corps, but these guys dropped way too damn many passes, especially John Chiles. Agree that Mike Davis looked solid.
Cody Johnson looked good. Fozzy looked good in the limited action he saw.
The highlight of the evening was definitely Scott’s hit on Smith, which he clearly was not supposed to do, but it was nice, nonetheless.
Hard to get an accurate reading when they’re running around in shells and shorts. Tonight’s practice should tell us a lot more. Also, Goodwin pulled a hamstring or something. Don’t know how serious, but he came up limping at one point. It’ll be interesting to see if he practices tonight.
GG's zip
Seems last year the receivers were not used to the zip that GG put on his passes. So they dropped balls that hit them in the hands. Did he adjust to his receivers over the summer/spring or his receivers to him? Or will we see him continue to throw hard and the balls bounce off of their hands?
What have we seen at practice, particularly with the shorter passes across the middle?
bit of both, IMO-
I did see a much better touch on the ball than we saw in the short passes last year; however, I did think there were a few that he really drilled in there. That might partially account for the several drops I saw from the various receivers. Of course, the receivers could just be catching badly—very hard to tell from a seat in the bleachers!

Who is holding on the extra point and field goal tries? It seems Shipley has been doing that forever too!
I even named my son Kolt.

Chiles, maybe?
It’d make sense, I think.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Thanks for the link.
I’d bet Fitzhenry would be a great fit for that position. As a former QB, has great hands and quickness…as a runner, top 10 in Texas HS history, so, like with Shipley, the Horns would have some options.
