Is Jerrod Johnson the Real Deal?
Every analyst seems to be putting A&M's Jerrod Johnson at the top of their Big XII QB list. While he clearly is talented with some reliable weapons around him on offense, a part of me just can't seem to accept him as the best. OBVIOUSLY, I'm strong ("biased") towards Gilbert, having seen him in action in the National Championship, Spring Game and in person during a Spring practice and last night's open practice. While I won't say Gilbert is the best right now, he'll certainly have a chance to be the best as this season progresses.
When you start to think of Texas A&M's schedule last year, it's easy to see why Johnson's numbers may be inflated. Again, the talent is there. I just can't bring myself to say he's the best right now. Does he have a very high set of expectations? Definitely. No doubt we all will be studying him intently this year (Boom better be too!), but I wanted to ask the question here:

I think Muschamp underestimated his mobility
rightfully so considering he was horrible most of the year and you cannot honestly say that atmosphere didnt play a key role in keeping ATM in hat game till the end…. I think he will be shut down in Austin this Thanksgiving..
Think the Short Week was a bigger factor
Like our scheduling and home field advantage this year. Think Boom will really frustrate JJ this year. That being said, I do think he is a stud.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
We made the guy look like freaking VY last year
pretty safe to say he’s the real deal. Not many QBs out there can embarrass a Muschamp led defense like he did on Thanksgiving.

Not sure how to answer the poll....
…I think JJ is a mixed bag. When he’s in the zone, then he is darn good; but when he’s off, he’s really off.
I agree that Boom may have underestimated him a little or something. But JJ was on fire against Texas. It’s hard to stop a player that is having a great game and can do no wrong – sometimes the stars align.
So therefore, I think JJ lacks consistency and maybe that’s the answer – as you said, we’ll see in November.
Somewhere in the middle
He had games last year where he looked really, really good and games where he looked really, really awful. I have no qualms with saying he’s a very talented athlete, but I agree with Go Bevo that he lacks one of the key characteristics of great QBs, and that is consistency. I don’t think it’s fair to make a comparison between Johnson and Gilbert right now.
Consistency
But along with experience and age, the consistency will be there. While he showed flashes of un-brilliance, last year, you know he’ll be ready for the Thanksgiving Day game. It never pays to underestimate your opponent.
Hook 'em Horns
Yes, he'll be ready
It’s the only game they care about. Doesn’t make him a great QB.
No....
JJ is to up and down to be considered as the “Real Deal”.JJ and A&M beat all of the teams they were supposed to of beaten…..New Mexico, Utah St., UAB, TTech, Iowa St., and their nemisis Baylor. I think in last years game he got lucky and we got lazy, that won’t happen this year.
I think he's extremely talented and
Probably better than just “good.” But I don’t think he’s great. Stats are liars in his case, because they’re mainly either from pasting terrible teams when JJ played the entire game or from airing it out when they’re behind by half a hundred. He’s impossible to stop when he’s on (assuming his line is halfway decent).
Muschamp’s plan against him last year was one of the most technically deficient and illogical gameplans I’ve seen in my entire life.
Jerrod Johnson is the second coming of Jesus.
Mark my words. He will run for over 4,000 yards this season, while passing for over 5,000. He will make Graham Harrell look like a one-armed special Olympian with a lazy eye and pigeon feet. The game has simply slowed down for him – maybe too much. The team held a personal practice session for me, and at one point he threw a pass that was so far out in front of the receiver that it looked like he’d thrown it from the huddle. No kidding. As soon as he saw that the receiver’s mortal speed was going to keep him from catching up to the ball, JJ himself ran down field, caught his own pass, and high-stepped into the endzone in slow motion (and not “tv slow motion,” but actual slow motion – like Matrix time).
With the ridiculous amount of skill position talent we have this year, the Ags are pretty much a lock for the Big XII championship, where they’ll almost certainly destroy a good-but-not-great Nebraska team for the second time in 2010. We’ll most likely meet Ohio State in the BCS Championship, where JJ’s speed will make the Buckeyes look like gimpy midgets. Personally, I’ll be shocked if he doesn’t put up Madden-esque numbers in that game – something on the order of 220 yards rushing, 300+ passing. O/U on the game is probably somewhere in the vicinity of 70; take the over. Trust me.
Signed,
Beergut
