7 Hours Left: Ruffin, Workman and Green Returning?
[UPDATE 7:08 PM -- Ruffin signs for $1.15 million according to KEYE]
[UPDATE 4:18 PM -- Workman signs for $800,000, down 33% from his demans according to Keith Law]
Nothing new to report which is both shocking and expected. It is shocking that Ruffin and Workman, two players with not much room to move up in the draft could be returning to Austin in just under seven hours. It is expected that we haven't heard anything all day as the only real motivating factor is the upcoming midnight deadline, when all sides will either have to go or get off the pot.
While logic dictates that all three players should go pro, that Green's asking price is relatively high and that the Tigers must also pay for Ruffin lends credence to the idea that if anyone is coming back then it'll be him. Last night some were reporting that Workman was leaning towards turning down the Red Sox, which would be positive news except that 24 hours before the deadline is the perfect time to be floating a rumor like that in order to get the Red Sox to bite. If he's serious, though, it'd obviously be a great development for Augie and crew.
Some cautious optimism right now is allowed, although it might be deflated rather quickly. Needless to say, the 2011 baseball team's success may be decided on a warm August night in 2010.

Various sources
reporting that Workman signed. In the neighborhood of $800K
Jeff Howe's twitter:
Latest from @aTrubow on #UT baseball draftees – Brandon Workman has signed w/ Red Sox. No deals yet for Chance Ruffin or Cole Green.
Saw that just a second ago
On Keith Law’s twitter. Figures, I sit on this all day then he signs within 5 minutes of me posting
Hey 40, did you see what Strasburg said in regards to the #1 pick by the Nationals?
“If he doesn’t want to play here, we don’t want him.” Haha, love it!
Are the Nationals gonna go hard after Adam Dunn or just let him walk figuring they’re still a few years away from being able to do anything serious?

Yea, I saw that
I’d say it’s classic but I’m of the opinion that Strasburg lacks any semblance of a personality (at least with the media) so I’d take it as a very literal off the cusp comment that doesn’t have a whole lot of emotion behind it. I’m almost certain he’s going to sign, so look for my mea culpa later tonight :-)
They’re definitely gonna go after Dunn. I think they feel that if you’ve got a superstar and let him go for pennies on the dollar (which is what they would’ve gotten for the guy leading the NL in homers) then you’re never going to see him again. That’s why I’d bet they’re willing to risk not signing him rather than get somebody like Edwin Jackson. He seems to like it in Washington and the team is clearly getting better.
Leverage
Coyle was a high schooler and had two more chances to get drafted, Workman loses all his leverage by going back to school so he really didn’t have much of a choice.
People say that, but I don't see it.
High schoolers have to choose whether to go out this year or sit out an extra 3 years, whereas juniors just have to sit out one year. And it’s not like they can’t play independent ball for another year. 3 years to possibly get injured vs only one?

I think it's less about injury and more about performance
If Workman goes out there and does not improve next year maybe he gets drafted at the exact same pick, but the team that drafts him has zero incentive to pay him a penny over the slot suggestion since all he’s doing by not signing is delaying his professional start. A player’s biggest leverage is the high school year when they have three years to improve and two more chances to be drafted. Workman made the right decision though, good to see him get paid eventually.
Workman, a right-handed pitcher out of the University of Texas (the draft’s 57th round overall pick), will sign a deal that includes an $800,000 signing bonus. The agreement was finalized after a call between the Red Sox and Workman’s represenatives on a 2 p.m. call, with the player coming down from his asking price of $1.25 million and the Sox coming up from the MLB’s suggested slot of approximately $634,000. He will begin his professional career in the coming days, reporting to Fort Myers.
Coyle the 110th overall selection in this year’s amateur draft, is reportedly agreeing to a signing bonus of $1.3 million, according to Baseball America’s Jim Callis. The Pennsylvania high school star flew into Boston with his father for a physical, and to see if the final detalis of a contract could be arranged. The finalized well above MLB’s recommended slot of $300,000
From here
I would be quite pissed
if we lose out on AS-J, and all three sign on the same night. Does anyone want to post something positive and uplifting on this website anymore?
;-)
Stumpy: It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-the-wall town in what is now called "Utah".
sorry man
but apparently DeAndre Daniels (former basketball commit) has re-opened his recruitment.. My guess is Scott Drew got a hold of him and showed him a little negative recruitment against Texas
Its ok
Just means that my bottle of Maker’s Mark will be opened tonight sooner than later.

Ruffin signs for $1.15 million
According to KEYE Chance Ruffin has signed with the Detroit Tigers – it’s a deal worth 1.15 million. #UT #horns
Neither Cole Green nor Tant Shepherd signed with their respective clubs
Both will be back for the upcoming baseball season. With Workman and Ruffin always expected to sign, this is probably the best news possible for the team.

this is awesome
We got Cole Green and Jungmann coming back, plus Stafford. Great news.
Visit my blog on all things college football, Pigskin Phenom.
And Milner
With Shep back, that adds much needed power to our lineup. Finally good news from tonight.
