Texas, Oklahoma To Kick Off At 2:30 PM

Say good bye to the 11 a.m. kickoff. And hello to several more drinks before entering the Cotton Bowl.  Texas and Oklahoma will be kicking off their annual showdown at 2:30 p.m. CT, the game to be nationally televised on ABC.

I'm firmly entrenched in the "keep the game in Dallas the Cotton Bowl camp," but consider this your open thread for discussion of all things logistical related to the RRS.

Such a welcome change

This game is way too impoprtant on the national scene to have it buried at 11 am. And yeah, a few more drinks before kick-off are welcome as well.

And that is...

…“national” as in “no split regional coverage”?

Herbstreit

I do not know if this factors in at all, but this might give Herbie enough time to get from Tuscaloosa to Dallas to call the game with Brent.

by Wigman on Aug 23, 2010 12:21 PM CDT up reply actions

No way he could do both.

It would require almost perfect timing to get from Point A to Point B with just a few moments to spare. Gameday will be in Dallas, or Brent & Herbie will be doing the prime time game.

Perfect time

The 2:30 slot is by far the most preferable of the two for a multitude of reasons – namely enjoyment of the fair and traffic. The only downside are the nasty shadows over the field in the second half. I would love a national primetime night game just once but know it will never happen.
After this game, Florida / Alabama will surely be in primetime on CBS.

Time not set for Florida-Alabama

Anybody look at the Gators’ schedule? First six are against Miami, S. Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama and LSU, and two weeks after the Tigers, it’s Georgia.

by edsp on Aug 23, 2010 1:51 PM CDT up reply actions

S. florida lost their coach
Tennessee lost their coach and half the roster is walk-ons
Kentucky is not a threat
LSU hasn’t been “LSU” since 2007

Tough start, no doubt

but that’s Miami (OH), and 3 weeks between LSU and UGA.

In 07 we waited an hour and a half for our cab and then some classy gentlemen in OU regalia pushed us out of it. Me and my little sister. This is why OU is such a classy insitution.

Oh, it was bad going....

…You must have gotten there before one of the train stalled on the track. The train in front of us stalled. We sat in one spot for 20 minutes with the doors opening and closing, but we didn’t move. No explanation over the loud speaker as to why we were stopped. Our group of 4 finally pushed our way out of the car. We were 2 miles from the stadium, my wife and I elected to jog, the other 2 walked. We got to the game half way through the 1st quarter, they missed most of the 1st half.

There were so many people in our car that I put my hand up to waive to a friend, and couldn’t put it back down for 30 minutes, just had to rest my arm on my head.

What's the word on the Cotton Bowl itself?

Seems like I’ve heard it’s coming down at some point, and also that Jerry World is being considered for the RRS. I have no links to give, but think I’ve heard this a few times.

Keeping it in Dallas

Peter, do you mean Dallas or the Cotton Bowl?

I’ve been thinking about this and I feel like I’d rather watch Texas and OU play home and home than watch them in Jerry World. That stadium is just all wrong for Texas/OU and college football in general. The Big 12 Championship Game was one of the worst gameday experiences I’ve ever had. You can’t hear the band, everyone is so far away from the field, and THERE IS NO STATE FAIR HOW CAN I EAT MY FRIED BUTTERED TWINKIE BATTER?

I am with you on keeping it in Dallas as long as it stays at the State Fair. The day that is no longer possible I am 100% behind moving to home and home.

considering the decor in our new apartment

contains a 1977 issue of SI with Earl on the cover, signed photos of Mack, VY, Colt, and Ship, a neon horn-shaped burnt orange light, a carved iron Texas (state) with a Longhorn cutout, and the front page of the Daily Texan from January 06, and our dog crate has a moderately sized orange horn emblem hanging on the door, yes, you could probably figure that one out.

This will be much better than last year when we had to leave home halfway through the game to go watch ND play USC at home (poor decision in retrospect, I know).

I hope I’m wrong.

I think you're right-on, HH

We won’t move OU date, and I doubt the Aggie games goes into December. But one of our games will be moved to the date where the CCG used to be — Tech, maybe? Or some kind of rotation?

If I had the power, I’d schedule Notre Dame on that date in the years it’s in Austin and the Irish AREN’T playing at USC at the end of the season.

I can't decide if I'm for this or against it.

At least with the 11am start there wasn’t a lot of fidgeting around waiting for the game to start with that unholy nausea in the pit of my stomach.

On the plus side being shitfaced at 2:30pm is more socially acceptable than being shitfaced at 11am. Also on the plus side, there’s more time to fiddle with brisket.

by adt2 on Aug 23, 2010 1:35 PM CDT reply actions

These are all important things to think about.

As for the fidgety nausea, the 11am game can still have you waking up at 6am after a night of heavy drinking where you still finding yourself pacing, but with a horrible headache. That said, 2:30 sounds good.

Some early speculation had the broadcast being regional, which would have meant no game for me, as we get the Seattle stations. 2:30 also translates into 12:30 here, so I can drink beer during the game. Well, I have been known to imbibe when the game was earlier, but this is a lot easier to justify to my wife. 9:00AM kickoffs are not fun.
