Abilene vs. Belton Prospects
I'm attending David Ash's game tonight as Belton plays Abilene at the Alamodome for part of the Texas Football Classic. I'm sure OK State commit Hershel Sims will be impressive, but I was wondering if any other Texas commits or prospects will be playing. Any information is appreciated.

No other Texas commits, no
But Herschel’s cousin, Ronnell, who plays quarterback is worth watching. Didn’t realize that game is going to be played in the Alamodome. Be sure to drop back by and share your thoughts on Sims and Ash after the game.

A few comments & observations.
Belton never stopped battling Friday evening in S.A. as they played Abilene to a 13-13 halftime tie, but fell short 36-27. It appeared that the BHS coaches went a bit overboard with trick plays in an attempt to offset the talent gap. None were successful except a fake punt which lead to their first TD. They failed a 2-pt conversion attempt at 6-7 then tried the first of 2 or 3 puzzling onside kicks. Luckily for Belton, the Eagles’ kicker missed 1 (or 2) PATs.
We arrived during the Sims cousins’ dominance of the Tigers’ D on Abilene’s opening scoring drive. Herschel definitely played as advertised, gashing Belton defenders for multiple 20+ yd rushes. Included were at least two 40+ yd (highlight reel) runs where the defense tripped him up just before scoring. His cousin Ronnell starts at QB, displaying potentially greater speed. He rushed effectively while completing several nice passes. Ronnell also split out wide on a few plays to allow Herschel the direct snap. The Sims starred in a brutal 4-back rushing attack which ultimately overwhelmed Belton.
Ash played well for the most part, leading Belton to score on all but a handful of drives while fighting false starts and lot of high snaps (10-15 iirc). Some of that is of course expected in a HS team’s 1st game. Ash’s polish looks improved over what I saw last year, as he executed a sideline pass uncatchable by the D and routinely threw on the numbers at 15-20 yd depths. Two of these were plagued by wide open drops. Probably the toughest mistake was a late pass over the middle wrestled away by Abliene’s MLB at the 30. It preceded the FG that eventually put the game out of reach, 30-20. The good news for Longhorn fans is that Ash commanded the offense well vs. the defending champs, leading some very Colt-esque drives to give Belton a chance.
