Dustin Earnest
Very disappointed that the RS Senior couldn’t wrap up the MLB position before the start of the season.
I am a little bit as well
But I’m also disappointed for Norton. On the other hand, I think it’s awesome that Dravantti has apparently begun to live up to his recruiting hype, because he’s a stand-alone starter on this.
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Dravanti's
The man out – replaced by AW – in our base nickel, which will be our primary defensive look IMO.
Therefore I don’t see this as a negative reflection on Earnest. Best athletes on the field at all times. Love it.

loved that guy

He's an OR at Left CB
and the starter in the nickel. He will be on the field when the ones open against Rice, I don’t there is any doubt about that.

I think you're right about the standard five and standard fours in the other thread
When there are four DBs, Williams is on the field, and Chykie usually won’t be. When there are five, Chykie’s on the field lined up against an outside receiver, with Williams across from the slot. Williams just moves inside. Makes sense, I guess.

Looks like from this depth chart it woud be Curtis coming off
but that might only be because of his nagging injury, an ankle or a hamstring or something. Chykie certainly looked inconsistent again in the open practice.

Strange that
Curtis has the OR instead of Chykie. If they go 4 DB, which one comes off?
I don't always watch football, but when I do, I prefer Dos Achos. Stay thirsty, my friends.
He's the starter at nickel
…and I think Muschamp likes to use the nickel a lot. He’ll be out there early and often.
Didn't he note Texas used it about 70% at one time?
Of course, it depends on the opponent but most of the lesser teams will see the nickle.
interesting
- Okafor at DT :\
- Howel with the 3rds :(
- 11 true freshman there!
- Mike Davis a starter as a true freshman! :>
- Jamison Berryhill is a starter. He is a walkon, right?
- Jared Norton is with the backups!
In Mack Brown We Trust!
The real depth chart is out:
1. Cody Johnson is the starting RB
2. There’s a lot of competition at WR, is anyone safe?
3. Cade McCrary, lol. GJ buddy.
4. Alex Okafor is a backup DT? Interesting.
5. Tucker is doing both kickoffs and place kicks, I expected Russ to take one of those.
Tucker was much better on kickoffs in open practice
Was actually a bit disappointed that Russ’ leg didn’t look as good as advertised there.

Some thoughts
- Receivers are all over the place. Very disappointing that Mal didn’t lock down the X, although it’s encouraging to see that Mike Davis is already considered an
ORfor a starting role.
- Did Mack confuse Barrett and Smith between H-back and TE? I expect that means our first set with be 3 WR / 1 TE / 1 RB.
- Buchanan is just a place holder? I expected Hopkins there, and likely Kelley by game 2.
- Cody Johnson must have really impressed.
- Nice to Berryhill get some depth chart pub.
- Okafor inside sounds like a wasted resource. I expect that we’ll see a lot of the 3 DE / 1 DT look at this point. Tyrell Higgins earned that scholly, I guess.
- Dravannti starting at SLB is a bit surprising. Combined with Okafor on the inside, and all that fluff about plugging up the middle to stop power running games sounds like lip-service.
- Adrian Phillips & Dom Espinosa on the depth chart. Both of those looked like redshirt candidates, but Mack’s “they will play” diatribe may ring true after all.
- Great to see him going with Goodwin and Monroe on kickoffs.
- Is Greg Smith really the best option for snapper? I’d like to see Mack train up someone younger so there’s position stability, but as long as he doesn’t f up, guess it’s all good.

Per Scipio
Brewster is redshirting, and Jeremy Hills has asked for a shirt as well.

Not sure it helps too much, except maybe depth
Gideon and Scott/Vaccaro will still be the starters next year. A redshirt year would buy Brewster a year to compete for a starting job when both graduate, but more likely by that point he’ll be behind Phillips, Evans, etc. on the depth chart.
I think it depends what Brewster wants in his life: does he want to be a 4 year letterman at Texas or get a better shot at a starting gig elsewhere?

Underclassmen
I’m most surprised by the youth in the 2 deep. Since Mack started playing so many underclassmen I don’t recall this many Freshamn in the two deep. Also, what happened to Hales? Glad to see the Wr’s are held accountable for thier drops.
Hales and Darius White not listed
But both will probably get some run at receiver before the year is up.
Also, no DJ Monroe: specialty back extraordinaire!

listed as a kick returner, and will likely still be a specialty back

notes from Mack's press conference
just a few things I noticed…
- I think he mentioned Okafor and Howell had been held up by nagging injuries. Might explain the DT situation
- Brewster and Hills requested to redshirt… he mentioned an injury for Brewster but not sure about Hills – unfortunately for them the guys ahead of them on the depth chart should all be around next year, too.
- He stressed the depth chart is day-to-day and there’s still a lot of competition at some positions
- mentioned Bible, Darius White, Greg Daniels, and Will Russ will play this season. I may be forgetting a couple. They MAY play Dom Espinosa depending on injuries and such.
- Gold is the punter, but is “being challenged” by Tucker
- Hicks will be in on special teams a lot
- Curtis Brown and Aaron Williams are so important in punt return blocking that they will both be out there every time – they may take turns fielding punts
- Roberson has been looked at as short-yardage/goal-line RB since he played tailback in HS
- Sam Acho at DE “but we’re just as excited about Reggie Wilson” (!!!)
Also
He talked about some kind of special package that would be for D.J. Monroe, Marquise Goodwin, and…. crap, I’m forgetting the 3rd one, maybe Fozzy? Sounds like a set package that any of the 3 could run. He stressed making sure when DJ Monroe gets in the game, that the defense doesn’t know exactly what they’re doing.
Hales, I'm guessing?

You may be right. I think it was Hales.
One other thing re: Rice, they’re going to have to work on the defensive game plan on the fly during the game. Rice is not naming a starter among 3 QBs – 2 are dual-threat option guys and the other one is a pocket passer, so we’re not really sure what kind of offense they’re going to run.
If he could choose one unit to excel in the first game, it would be Special Teams (with no hesitation). Most opening games are determined by kicking game, field position, and turnovers.
So we're talking deception in that case.
Mack has been loathe to use much deception but if he’s going to a more standard running game, that is an essential part of the package, even if it is counters and single reverses.
Statue of Liberty FTW!!!
Maybe they picked up some ideas from the Boise St. staff…
They picked up the beat-OU part of it, yes.

They might have, but I was looking at deception more than trick plays.
And I don’t mean the wheel route…that is almost a staple and, of course, should be in there.
DJ and Marquise at KR
i think it was mentioned last week, but it’s still cool to see. Who do you kick away from?! Zoom Zoom!
