Mack was on the Dan Patrick Show this morning and commented on whether VY should receive Bush's Heisman Trophy and other musings. What are your thoughts...If Bush's Heisman is returned, should they give it to VY, should he accept it or just tell them to go to hell. We are Texas.

I'm confused

what was his comment? Was it we’er Texas?

Give it to VY

That was his response if they were to take it away from Bush. My thoughts are go to hell if they offer it to VY, too little too late. The Heisman has lost a lot of luster the last decade IMO in the way they present the trophy before all the games are played and the presentation on ESecPN is quite amusing, a little too political. Click the headline and it will take you to the article for your reading pleasure.

I'm not into revisionist history

I suppose the 2005 Heisman should be vacated, since Bush almost certainly was geting (or his family was) illegal benefits . . . but how many Heisman winners in the last three decades do you suppose weren’t getting something similar?

If offered, Vince should politely decline. He got the trophy he REALLY wanted.

This is black and white to me

I know I’m in the minority, but this is so simple to me. Just like the Olympics, when a competitor is found to be ineligible (whether due to doping, being under age for the Olympics-yes i’m talking to you China, or for having accepted improper benefits) then that person should be stripped of the trophy. That means Bush should be stripped. Like all other sporting events, the second (2nd) place contestant is given the award. It is not for VY to accept or deny, he is simply the Heisman Trophy winner whether he likes it or not. He is the winner by default, but the winner nonetheless.
I do think the Heisman is a joke and that they are making a terrible decision not to move their award voting/ceremony until after all games, but they have missed on voting the actual best college football player so many times that it is becoming an average trophy anyway.

I agree.

It’s very clear-cut: Vince gets the Heisman. Hopefully, he’ll be gracious and just accept it. It’d mean a lot to TX HS football and to the UT football program, and Vince has always been a team player. I don’t know why in the world he would refuse it. The Bush voters genuinely thought Bush was the best player that year. Nothing wrong with that. They certainly hadn’t verified that Bush had cheated, up to that point. My only question would be how they would award it to Vince. Will they just give it to him through a simple announcement or would they have some kind of ceremony tacked on to Heisman weekend this year? That could be really awkward.

However, I don’t think the Heisman should be awarded after bowls. Beside it being a popularity east coast-bias award, it’s perfect timing the way it is. Lots of players aren’t in bowls or BCS’ huge-viewership bowls and it wouldn’t be equally fair to all candidates. Also, at the point after the BCS championship game, I really don’t think anyone cares about it anymore. Even though I absolutely loved Vince sticking a crystal football in 2 Heisman winners’ faces in 2006, the Heisman is NOT the ultimate prize over the National Championship. THAT should be the final award.

So you’re saying someone on a losing team can still win the Heisman nowadays?

by vy til i die on Aug 31, 2010 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Theoretically, Yes ... Realistically, Heck No. (& only if you're Irish)

Paul Hornung aside, (1956 Heisman while ND was 2-8), you’re right. However, I think it would create a blatantly-unfair situation against deserving players on poor teams. I really meant more along the lines of, say, if Colt McCoy would have had his standard good game and thrown for 3 TDs, 250 yards, & the win vs. ‘Bama in the BCS CG as opposed to Toby Gerhart running wild for 300 yards vs. ou in the Sun Bowl. While Gerhart probably had the best statement game, who is going to get all the ’pub’? Probably Colt.

All I’m saying is that, if bowl games & other umpteen post-season awards & shows are considered, it’s going to be even more TV & media-driven than it is already. And it’s really bad already!

by robthecob on Aug 31, 2010 5:50 PM CDT up reply actions

That was 50 years ago

No way it would happen now, even at ND. Notice how last season Jimmy Clausen and Golden Tate dropped off all the Heisman lists after ND imploded in November, even though it was the defense or lack thereof that was losing the games.

Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you soon enough. If he's not, don't embarrass him.

Lets see

I’ll cluster some topics and see what happens.

Heisman- Bush- Vince in 2nd- Reggie earned it on the field- Cheating off the field- should reggie keep trophy?- Notre Dame- matt leinart- oh shit- the push!!- did he earn it on the field?- I say no- he wouldn’t have won it if they lost to ND- he cheated on and off the field- Vince wins

Well that was easy.. Vince should be outright winner. Give the man his trophy and set an example of the cheater

by Dirty Work on Sep 1, 2010 5:29 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't understand what you're trying to say in that topic cluster thing

nothing to do with what I said. I just said ND players wouldn’t get special treatment in the Heisman race for being ND players anymore.

ND

just made me think of the bush push. Nothing really to do with what ya said

Pushing a teammate into the endzone is illegal in pro ball...

…but not in college. The “Bush Push” was perfectly legal.

by robthecob on Sep 2, 2010 9:58 AM CDT up reply actions

You sure?

A big deal was made about it when it happened. It seems nobody would make a big deal about it if it weren’t illegal. Got a link that says it’s OK?

by Dirty Work on Sep 2, 2010 4:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I can live with the timing

You make a good point about not taking away from the real Final trophy which is the crystal ball.

by Wrangler86 on Aug 31, 2010 12:12 PM CDT up reply actions

And, NO ceremony

It goes in a UPS box to VY, and the replica goes to UT. The Heisman “Brain” Trust makes a statement that te number 1 vote getter has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA governing body and therefore the 2nd place vote getter has been named the winner. Thank you.

How 'bout a halftime presentation at DKR?

Gotta give us some way to cheer for Superman. Say, halftime of the USC vs. Texas game in 2018? Now that would be classic!

I Agree and Will Go Further

Not only should VY get the tropy, he should accept it magnanamously. Here is what should be done:

1. He gets the award.
2. Texas hosts a ceremony to present VY the trophy – push for ESPN to air. (better than the decision)
3. During the warm up – Vince´s highlights are shown and the holding up of the crystal football.
4. Mack hosts the events and uses his folksy charm and needle to say sometimes it takes 6 years to get something right.
5. Vince thanks everyone, parents, coaches, ESPN, the courage of the Heisman voters etc.
6. Texas commisions statue of Vince as 3rd Heisman winner.

While the trophy can be interpreted as a joke, it is still a tremendous achievement for both the University and Vince. Right this wrong immediately.

Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"

Sounds like a plan!

Heisman or not, start working on Colt’s statue too. He deserves it, as does Nobis, Layne, etc…

by robthecob on Sep 2, 2010 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

My solution is..

IF they make Reggie return the Heisman, then decide to name Vince the winner and give him the trophy, let him accept it and be called the Heisman winner. If Vince doesn’t want the trophy, give it back to Reggie on y’alls own time, behind the scenes. Reggie earned it, but he cheated, so let Vince have the Heisman title and if Vince doesn’t want the trophy let Reggie keep it. Problem solved

by Dirty Work on Aug 31, 2010 1:08 AM CDT reply actions

Reggie's not keeping the Heisman, regardless.

If Vince doesn’t accept it, then he’ll still be named the Heisman winner anyway. Leinart, as 3rd place, probably has a more realistic shot at getting it than does Bush, at this point.

by robthecob on Aug 31, 2010 9:03 AM CDT up reply actions

I know

I’m saying if Reggie is forced to give Vince his Heisman Trophy, Vince just might not want it. In which case he could just go ahead and wait til all this blows over and give it back to Reggie one day when he’s in town to play the Saints. I’m talking about the trophy, not being named the Heisman. I think that’s where you misunderstood me

by Dirty Work on Aug 31, 2010 10:06 PM CDT reply actions

Aaaahh.

Okay, I get what you were saying.

by robthecob on Sep 1, 2010 8:34 AM CDT up reply actions

You Know.......

Fuck the NCAA. You have a bunch of highly paid suits making rules so those that actually bring in the money don’t get much of the fruits of their labor. In football most players aren’t going on to rich contracts in the NFL. They risk permanent injury for a education that doesn’t guarantee a paycheck. Even the scholarships aren’t guaranteed. What percentage of scholarship athletes actually get degrees?

It a share cropper system that because it’s a monopoly doesn’t allow the “students athletes” one iota of control. It’s so completely antithetical to the principles of this country. These are the same people that had to be forced by government regulation (title IX) to offer sports equally to men and women. This the same group that was almost the last institutions to stop segregation (almost 20 years after baseball).
