Fantasy Football Open Thread
I'm off to run some morning errands, but how about a fantasy football open thread to keep things moving. I'd actually decided against joining any leagues this year, but when the partner I'll be working under asked me at the last minute to co-draft a team with him, that changed real fast.
Our plan from picking 7th in a 12-team league was to go Michael Turner, Jamaal Charles, C.J. Spiller, and Jermichael Finley in the first four rounds, and we got all four. Our core team:
| POS | PLAYER | ROUND |
| QB | Vince Young | 7 |
| RB | Michael Turner | 1 |
| RB | Jamaal Charles | 2 |
| WR | Robert Meachem | 5 |
| WR | Jeremy Maclin | 6 |
| TE | Jermichael Finley | 4 |
| Flex | CJ Spiller | 3 |
| K | Garrett Hartley | 12 |
| D | New York Jets | 8 |
| BN | Matt Stafford | 9 |
| BN | John Carlson | 10 |
| BN | Golden Tate | 11 |
| BN | Jordan Shipley | 13 |
Who do you like this year? Any sleepers you're staking your rep on?

Rd 3: Pierre Thomas
Rd 4: Matt Schaub
Rd 5: Michael Crabtree
Rd 6: Santana Moss
Rd 7: Jermicheal Finley
Rd 8: Marion Barber
Rd 9: Malcolm Floyd

Rd13: Eddie Royal
Rd14: Matt Cassel
Rd15 Baltimore D/ST
Rd16: Neil Rackers
I will be shocked if I don’t make the playoffs, even if one of my first three picks goes down for the season.
Malcolm Jones
with Vincent Jackson out… Rivers will get the ball to him and Gates
“Sure I’ll be your partner, Partner” wink wink
But sheesh, Spiller in the 3rd? I’m not a fantasy guru by any means but that seems highly over drafted.
Here’s what I ended up with (1st pick)
QB Jay Cutler (6th)
RB Chris Johnson (1st)
RB Rashard Mendenhall (3rd)
WR Miles Austin (2nd)
WR Wes Welker (4th)
Flex Pierre Garcon (7th)
TE Vernon Davis (5th)
D/ST Vikings (9th)
K Ryan Longwell (12th)
BN Alex Smith (14th)
BN Heath Miller (13th)
BN Jabar Gaffney (10th)
BN Bengals Defense (11th, there was a goof here and I let myself go to autodraft and it insta picked for me)
BN MIchael Bush (8th)
BN Lawrence Tynes (15th)
Thinking about dropping the Bengals defense and Lawrence Tynes, not too sure who to pickup though.. Davone Bess? Chris Chambers?

Upside
I badly wanted Spiller as a high upside guy, and was willing to overpay. I’m no expert, either, though, and we did very little research before the draft. We had no real sense of when players would go, just who we wanted to build our team around. We got our favorite four, so we’re happy. Whether it’s gonna work… no clue.
You ain't hurt...
yup, no problem with the rest, and you got who you wanted.. J Mike was gone right before I could get to him, vernon’s knee better be 100% asap.

Some Texas-centric thoughts from my leagues
- I wanted Finley but he was just going too high to justify. I’d rather draft a solid WR and put off the TE for a double digit rounder like John Carlson.
- I think Charles is a top 5 RB this year. Not so sure about Benson.
- I complemented VY with Joe Flacco in one league. We’ll see how that goes.
- People are still actually drafting Roy Williams. Amazing.
- I picked up Shipley with my last pick in a 14 team deep league. I still need to drop someone for a kicker and assumed it would be Shipley, but I’m sort of reconsidering.
I don't always watch football, but when I do, I prefer Dos Achos. Stay thirsty, my friends.
Also of note
Dexter McCluster is a WR/RB in Yahoo.
You don’t often that position flexibility. If Haley gets him significant touches and he is a force in the return game, he’s not a bad plug and play for bye weeks.

I like Vince to break out as a good to sometimes great fantasy player this year...
…but I would have drafted him in tandem with a more established QB than Stafford so that if Vince wasn’t putting up the numbers, you would have had something reliable (if unremarkable) to fall back on (like jc25 did with Flacco, above). But you’re stacked at RB and I assume you’re not in a PPR league so the lack of superstar WRs isn’t that big of a deal. Plus you have so few bench spots that there will always be random WR’s on the waiver wire for you. And who knows, if both VY and Stafford break out, you might have a nice trade chip on your hands, something that wouldn’t be possible if you drafted an established but mediocre #2.
I managed to snag Adrian Peterson (I know, I know, I don’t like it either) and Rashard Mendenhall with my first two picks (and got LaDanian in the 12th round—huge value pick—along with Arian Foster) and pick up Reggie Wayne in the 3rd round. But by the time we wrapped around to me again, there had been a run on QBs and there wasn’t much left so I held out a few more rounds for Eli and picked up Dallas Clark and Welker in the interim. My 3rd WR slot is wide open (took a flier on Vincent Jackson playing sooner rather than later, otherwise it’s Lee Evans, Braylon Edwards or Johnny Knox….yuck), but I figure I can find someone on waivers or turn my excess RBs into WRs.
And this concludes today’s edition of “shit nobody cares about but you.”
We did something new in my league this year
We added Individual Defensive players and allowed QB’s to be played in the flex position which completely changed my draft strategy.
I was pick 7 and went Drew Brees and Tom Brady in consecutive picks. I picked up Garrard in free agency for their bye weeks
Running backs I went with Shonn Greene and Matt Forte. Even with LT in NY (who has burnt me 2 years in a row) I still feel Greene will get the bulk of the carries and TD’s and Forte was the best value at the time and he will catch a lot of balls. I added Jerome Harrison and Fred Jackson in late rounds
WR’s I got Ochocinco and Desean Jackson. Again, good value at the time and they will be 7+ points a game guys. For back ups I have Dwayne Bowe and Nate Washington (going to catch a ton of balls from Vince)
TE’s I tried to go with Finley but I lost him the pick before so I went with Vernon Davis, bad consolation, I know. I got John Carlson as a back up.
Defense I got Philly and Chicago. Philly led the league in forced To’s last year and they are always solid. Chicago is kind of a boom homer pick.
Kicker – My Bironas.
IDP I went with James Laurinitis. Best player on a terrible team and he will make a ton of tackles. For back up I went with Trent Cole.
For some boom picks I would go with Devin Aromashadou and Johnny Knox. Knox is a big play threat and has caught a ton of balls in the pre-season and Aromashadou had a huge last three weeks last year. This is kind of homer since I am a Bears fan but I lost them in mid-late rounds with others who felt the same.

I have almost the same team you did
Can’t imagine that Vince Young is a very good fantasy QB.
I got Hartley, Maclin, Spliller, and the NY Jets D
My sleeper pick was Dez Bryant. I think he will lead the ’boys in receiving TDs.
I am convinced that Chris Johnson is going to get injured this year. Cannot see that kind of work load not affecting him. Do not understand all the love for RBs this year.
Agreed
With all the 2 back teams and splitting carries and the general evolution of the NFL into a passing league you have to adjust your draft strategy accordingly. After AP and Chris Johnson there is no reason not to go QB next.

with 10 4,000 yard QBs last year… there’s alot of reason to not take a QB with your 2nd pick when you’re pick #1 or #2 (typically the only way you’re going to see CJ or AD)

That is what I was saying
After the first 2 picks that #3 pick is best valued for a QB (Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers) over another back.

i thought you meant with your 2nd pick you should take a QB, not that the 3rd pick should take a QB. stlill dunno if I agree with that. but, i’m a fantasy rookie, so i just do as i read.

I really don’t agree, and neither do fantasy experts/professionals. The only reason to take a QB before the 11th or so sport (Aaron Rodgers) is if you’re in a league that allows teams to start two QBs. High-performing RBs are much harder to find and you generally need to start at least two RBs (in most leagues you need to start three unless you have a ludicrous WR corps).
I don’t have my numbers handy right now but I did some calculations before my draft and the difference between for example Tom Brady (usually a 3rd/4th round pick) and Carson Palmer (usually available in the ninth) came out to something like 12% per game, whereas a RB you could get in the 3rd/4th vs one you could get in the ninth was over 70% per game.
Vince hasn't been a great fantasy QB so far, but that doesn't mean he won't be.
With teams gearing up for Chris Johnson, he should have plenty of opportunities to run and/or throw into single coverage. I don’t think he’ll ever be an elite fantasy guy because he’s never going to throw for 300 yards on a regular basis, but he can rack up points in any number of ways.
This year's team for me
Peyton Manning QB
Desean Jackson WR
Chad 85 WR
Mike Wallace WR
Ryan Mathews RB
CJ Spiller RB
Zach Miller TE
Dallas D
Josh Scobee K
BN LeSean McCoy RB
BN Matt Forte RB
BN Dexter McCluster RB/WR
BN Jordan Shipley WR
BN Chris Cooley TE
BN Kevin Kolb QB
where's the longhorn love?
I too was considering to forego a fantasy team this year, and so when I was drafted at the last minute to fill out a twelve team league I adopted a draft strategy that is sure to result in major attention. It is yet to be determined whether I will be reveling in league dominance or covering my eyes while I watch my all homer team crash and burn. That being said my foray into ultimate horns homerism began with my pre draft analysis turning up J Ship as my sleeper pick of the year. With that though I realized that it was possible to draft a “semi” competitive all longhorn team. So without further ado, the all horn homer team:
QB: Vincent Young (6th)
RB1: Cedric Benson (1st)
RB2: Jamal Charles (2nd)
Flex: Ricky Williams (3rd)
TE: Jermicheal Finely (5th)
WR1:Roy Williams (8th)
WR2: Jordan Shipley (9th)
Def: Cincinnati(ship, cosby)(6th)
K: Phil Dawson(7th)
BU WR: Crabtree (hedging in the third round)
Now supposing VY finally has his breakout year, Antonio Bryant gets cut from the angels and TO implodes, Roy Williams pulls his head outta his are, and Cedric and Jamal reach their full potential, I am going to dominate this league. Wether soaring to new heights or crash and burn, it sure to be an exciting ride……

Damn smart phones,
crabtree 4th round
Cincinnati through Shipley all shift down one

lol, looks like 4 decent players and then a whole lot of crash and burn… you have crabtree on the bench and roy williams/shipley starting… not to rain on your parade, but you will finish dead last unless someone else drafted a horrendous horrendous team.

Guys (and gals)...do yourselves a favor...in the future going forward...
…Instead of the snake draft, replace it with an auction format. I have been in the same league for 14 years now and while the first two years took some getting used to regarding the auction, it is now a glowing highlight on the calendar. Three members of the league, myself included, fly in for our auction which, is always held on the Wednesday evening following Labor Day.
12 Team league
14 Roster spots
$150 salary cap.
$1 minimum bid increments…thus, no $1.35 for the Seattle Defense
You want Chris Johnson (will take about $57) or one of the big four? You can get them. Gotta have Peyton Manning (Will take about $30-34)? Again, you can get him. Think Andre Johnson walks on water? Prepare to plunk down about $36-38 of your bankroll for him. Our league awards 1 point per reception. We found that this helped the hawking of RB’s early on and brought in more strategy to the mix.
And man is there strategy…the very reason I love the auction format so much is it involves MUCH more strategy. From bidding up a player you have no intention of wanting (but, at times you get him if you press your luck), to casually throwing a player up for auction that you really want and need and somehow sneak him through based on tracking other team’s needs, you really become the GM of your team.
The knock on the auction format is it takes longer…um, hello??? THIS night is arguably the greatest night of the football season. Why must we rush home? In our league, we arrive by 6:30, begin the auction by 7:00 and are usually out of there by 11:00-11:30. I will not lie…the end of an auction drags…just like the end of a draft. But, if you manage your bankroll effectively, you can steal some special talent towards the end of your auction.
Do some research on making this switch…you will create a legacy league that nobody wants to leave…we have only had one owner leave in 14 years. Snakedraft leagues just do not deliver the same atmosphere.

But I thought this would be the best place to ask this, but are we going to have a BON pick em again?
