Austin-area High School Game of the Week: Giddings vs. Brookshire Royal or Austin High vs. Belton?
Okay people, here's the deal. I will be attending high school games every Thursday and Friday night this fall (and some Saturdays too, most likely) and sometimes it's a hard decision which game to see in the Austin area. Last week, the decision came down to Leander vs. DeSoto and McNeil vs. Bastrop. I opened up the decision for voting on Twitter (@GhostofBigRoy), but only got four votes and that was kind of pathetic. Really patheic, actually.
So, in the hopes of surpassing those four votes this week, I'm opening things up to all you BONizens out there.
In one corner we have Brandon Williams and the Brookshire Royal Falcons. And Giddings, really of little interest. As most of you know, Williams is the favorite of both myself and Scipio Tex (sorry, Malcolm, I have room in my heart for more than one running back) and after watching Malcolm Brown in action last week in a full game for the first time, I would like to get a look at Williams some time this season.
In the other corner is Austin High vs. Belton. I've had the chance to watch David Ash at a couple 7-on-7 events and came away both impressed with his mechanics and throwing ability and also somewhat concerned about his decision-making ability and the way that he sometimes focuses in one receiver. Likewise, I had a chance to see Cayleb Jones at the Austin High spring game and would like to see him in game action after the 2012 star caught something like 11 passes for 170+ yards in a loss last week.
What, then, say you, fine BONizens?

Have you had a pregnancy test lately?
Williams allegedly has 2 kids already at age 17. I understand all the admiration for his play, but I don’t think he is going to pan out in Div. 1 with that much baby mama drama. He has issues.
Let it go.
Give the kid props for being a dad and choosing life. I guarantee you would be singing a different tune if he was coming to Texas.
Sports is man's joke on God, You see, God says to man, 'I've created a universe where it seems like everything matters, where you'll have to grapple with life and death and in the end you'll die anyway, and it won't really matter.' So man says to God, 'Oh, yeah? Within your universe we're going to create a sub-universe called sports, one that absolutely doesn't matter, and we'll follow everything that happens in it as if it were life and death.'" - Sam Kellerman
I like people with issues.
They’re always more fun to talk to.

As I recall
Belton was winless until my junior year when I was there. I’m glad they managed to figure out how to play in the past decade or so.
If they can do it, maybe there’s hope for Baylor too.
The French haven't the nature for war. Their Gallic laziness combines with their Latinate voluptuousness with the result that they would rather eat and make love with their faces than fight.
Belton
Another Belton grad here (02).
We were decent back in my day, and a few years after-during the Ramonce Taylor years-before badly falling off until Coach Southern took the job in 2007. By all accounts, Ash is a really good kid with a good head on his shoulders, and hopefully he’ll do well for the Tigers this year, and the Horns after that!
Go to this game, GOBR.

Ash staring down receivers
is something I failed to mention in my observations (posted Sunday, buried behind other fanshots). Ash really needs to work on this aspect of his game. He operated primarily out of the shotgun (except red zone) and blatantly stared at the receiver he intended to target.
Also, if you attend Belton’s game, check out his sideline demeanor. I only saw one game, so he may have been told to by the coaches to focus & stay close by. But, he seemed like a bit of a loner on the sideline and didn’t gradually follow the line of scrimmage with everyone else. This may point to leadership characteristics which need work as he wasn’t exactly rallying the troops when they were down & playing D either.
Noticed the same thing
when I saw Ash at 7-on-7 at the Westwood SQT. Was really disappointed that he would come over the sidelines, especially when they were losing and everyone was out of rhythm following his best receiver leaving the game with cramps, and not say anything to his teammates. Meanwhile, the Belton middle linebacker, a stocky little dude who was physically overmatched but would grab and hold and push to try to make plays, would come over and explain to his teammates where they needed to be and what schemes the other teams were running. Ash barely said a word to his teammates all day, just stood there by himself flipping the ball up in the air to himself.

Cayleb Jones
Is the truth. Go get a real look at him and report back. Man I wish I could see that game myself :-/
BTW, GoBR, you have to make it to the Austin High/Westlake game this season.
Much as I would love to see
Brandon Williams, 2-for-1 with checking out Ash and Jones – definately hit that game.

Ash and Jones Trump Williams
Those two on the same field should make for a good game. Although, my Girlfriends little brother says Jones is like a “mini-T.O.”
Hook 'em
David Ash and Belton
gets Herschel Sims and Abilene one week, and Caleb Jones the next? Tough non-con slate the UT commit.
Stumpy: It's called the '80s. Ford was president, Nixon was in the White House, and FDR was running this country into the ground. I was bummin' in a hole-in-the-wall town in what is now called "Utah".
