"Make 'em eat ____"

In the three years I've been a student here, I've come to have a real problem with this particular part of "Texas Fight." Yes, when I first got here, I went along with it and enjoyed saying it. But as time passed, I started to become less enamored  with the sentiment.

When I watched this video of Mack's speech after the 2006 Rose Bowl, and saw that the team chooses to chant "Go Horns, Go!," I realized something. Sure, the team is probably instructed to refrain from the profane version because they are preeminent representatives of the University. However, why doesn't the same underlying premise apply to the fans? The 100,000 of us that pack DKR each game are certainly representatives of the University, as well, and our behavior affects the image of UT in a significant way.

I just feel that telling our opponents to eat excrement is unnecessarily crude. Aren't we smart enough to realize that they are people, just the same as we are, and deserve to be treated with a certain level of respect? Shouldn't we seek to prioritize building up our team over tearing down others?

I don't know how long this has gone on, and I know that it would take a major change of culture to end it...but I think it's something that should be thought about, even if it is too ingrained and liked to be impacted by any sort of resistance.
