Texas 24 Texas Tech 14: Postgame Celebration Thread
I've been telling people, "You'd better get Texas early, because this defense is going to be filthy by November."
We're ahead of schedule.
We've got lots to talk about, lots to be worried about with the offense, but friends... savor this win. It's a huge one, and it was an absolutely beautiful performance by the defense. Eddie Jones? Holy wow... Our front four was just brilliant tonight.
Celebrate it like you're in the SEC. We'll deal with the rest later.
A huge, huge win for Texas tonight on the road to move to 3-0. Cheers. And hook 'em!

Great Win!
Sloppy as hell, but we beat the spread. Our defense is flat unfair.

defense can only get you so far.....
Offense needs a huge makeover. Starting with WRs who need to learn to hold on to the ball. and B Mitchell who needs to run 400 laps
Defense got us to a slim lead
in the MNC game. Maybe we lose if Colt stays in the game, maybe not. But defense got us there.
Count me in as fully on the Jackson Jeffcoat bandwagon.

Just think
we have more than 2 years before we have to go back to Lubbock. Wooohoooo! And by then, Tuberville will probably have taken the program down a full notch.
Yup. This ain't Mike Leach's TT offense, that's for sure.
TT is looking at hard times comin’.
I suspect we’ll look back at this game later in the year and count it as a breather, since their O couldn’t do crap against our D.
For those who think our O was bad, look at TT.
Tuberville wants to play defense
what he doesn’t know is that you need top-level recruits to play defense, but you can play offense with sub-par recruits and a good scheme. Leach knew that. Tuberville is delusional. That program is going to sink.

Spanked?
Not by a long shot. Tech defended Lubbock well, and Texas just plain wasn’t ready to play offense or even cover in the first half. I’m really, really happy to come away with the win, but this wasn’t a spanking at all.

GG was OK
Cant decide whether to blame dropped passes/tips by WR or GG putting too much zip on the ball.
I think the drops were a heavy combination of both

It's college football
Catch the freaking ball. The drops were embarrassing. Gilbert is doing a much better job with the touch on short passes than he was last year.
by GoHornsGo90 on Sep 18, 2010 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions
Things we learned:
1. The defense is stellar. We have an embarrassment of riches at DE and our secondary is great. Linebackers are too shabby either.
2. Gilbert is going to be really good.
3. We’re young and will look that way at times.
4. We can’t really run the ball.
5. Our o-line struggles and will cause mistakes by the O.
All things we knew coming into the year. But 3-0 makes it all go down a little smoother.

not that idiotic scheme again
doesn’t matter what he claims, 5 eligible receivers and covered/uncovered rules are the same for any formation
there is a reason that offense never won anything
I really am not getting the Gilbert praise
I think the kid has the talent. He has an arm that should make any coach drool. He has decent mobility. But he gets rattled, loses confidence, and in this game he definitely showed a troubling tendency to throw right at linemen. I think he has that potential, but he hasn’t shown a great deal of progress.

But he gutted it out when it counted most
Look, he’s a young, raw talent. Give him some time. This is a transition year for us on offense. They are getting better but how the hell can the guy overcome the OL penalties? He’ll get there. We’re 3-0.
I´m With you
Just win – and he did. Like you say – he gutted it out – hat tip to GG. Now work your ass off to get better.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
I feel similar
But he played on the road his first time. Im not sure whether to blame INTs on him (too much zip on balls) or WR has bad hands
The first tip ball is on OL - DE should have been chopped
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
So
Was the second. That should have been a “cut,” not “chop”, even more than the first pick.

I'm quite sure that if he were given the keys to Colt's offense
he’d be putting up similar numbers. But this is a different offense. Fewer safe throws, less rhythm. The kid’s doing fine. Put Colt in THIS offense his sophomore season, he’d look the same.

raw talent
that is what makes for sloppy wins. our raw talent level is unbelievable. with more experience this team could be great.
we still have time though
i guess this is a ‘rebuilding year’ but i really think we’ll have the talent on the field every week to keep us in the game. we might escape some tough situations with some ugly wins, or not, but our defense will keep us in every game this year.
The Defense is what will keep us in games..
The Offense will be the Defenses worse enemy. Just need the Offense to put a few points on the board and not lose the game.
...and UCLA, who has been terrible all year
is kicking the crap out of Houston. Of course they’d catch fire the week before they come to town.

Few thoughts
1. Besides the turnovers, if our receivers would have just caught a few of the passes GG put right in their hands, game may have been different.
2. Our D is awesome. Reminds me of the 1984 team that bailed out the O many many times. i do not think our O is like that team but a flash from that team was shown tonight.
3. Running attack. Not sure what to make of this but we made some boneheaded calls a few times trying to run the ball and putting GG in a third and long position. Will be interesting to see how the Texas coaches react to the game tonight going forward.
also
Im a huge Fozzy fan but his visiion is so bad. Why would you run it down the middle when theres a pile up already. By the time he had the ball in his hand the pile in the middle was formed. Why not run outside?

Time of possession was the difference.
A lot of things to work on but very proud to come out of here with a win.
I lost my mind on the fake punt call. But we had to turn the momentum and we believe in our kids. Roberson is a big ’ol back. We did not come out here to lay up. We took dead aim and got it done.
I told the kids we needed to take that pass off TD. The only regular season loss since ’08.
Kicking game was flawless.

our running plays
seem really slow to develop. like seconds go by before we’re cracking the line of scrimmage.
The reverses and end arounds tonite seemed to

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. Double digit win on the road in a conference game, despite four TOs, avenging our last regular season loss, which was almost two years ago. I like the sound of all that.
And I called 24-6, so I’ve called out offensive output right on the money twice now. Just need to fine-tune my prognosticating of turnovers leading to points for the opponents. It messed me up by a TD too little in my Rice prediction as well.

You talking about at the end of the half?
I think that worked out exactly as Mack wanted. If the offense is working we get in scoring position and when it wasn’t Tech had no time left.
by Horncasting on Sep 19, 2010 12:12 AM CDT up reply actions
+1
The commentators were moronic, Mack managed the clock there perfectly. If he had followed their instruction, with our anemic offense Tech would have gotten the ball back with 2 and a half minutes left and stolen a FG. And even if the offense had sputtered into gear at that point, we still had all of our timeouts and the ability to stop the clock at will. If there was only a minute, minute and a half left, that’s one thing, but they were screaming at 3 and a half minutes!

Good win,
but G. Davis’ RSG (random screen generator) must have been about to overheat tonight. We dialed up more worthless screens than I’ve seen in a while.
Unfortunately, I think the best one would probably been the one that was tipped and then intercepted, looked like the back would have had plenty of room to run.

Every time Mack runs that boring fake, it works. I knew he was going to do it. Now we have Roberson challenging Bobino for the most successful running back in Texas history.
The defense is simply brilliant. It was fun seeing the looks of the Tech fans. Was it me, or did the cameras go to Tuberville only after a 15-yard penalty by Tech?
We’ve got offense issues (time to pass to set up the run … again), but things could be worse … like giving up 325 on the ground to AF or winning by 7 @ home vs. Florida Int’l. Surviving tonight will go a long way toward helping this team succeed over the next few weeks and down the stretch.

I’m for the guys that say 3 – 0 is good.
I saw a lot of play calling that I didn’t like.especially in the red zone.
Report out of Houston says Keenum hurt his leg this may be why UCLA is doing good.
Thanks for all the laughs it helps ease the constipation brought on by the frustration of watching our offense.

All I have to say is...
WHEW…I started the “Worried about Tech” thread earlier this week and watching the first half solidified my fears.
Not a pretty win but any win on the road (especially at Lubbock) i’ll take it and move on happily.
What we learned today? Our D is nasty…just nasty. Limiting Tech to 7pts is insane. Our D line is fun to watch.
Offense is still a work in progress. Not scoring is one thing but turning it over in the red zone is simply not acceptable. We’re looking at least 17-0 and all momentum on our side if GG’s pass isnt tipped and returned for 6. Also Malcom’s drop also killed a promising drive…
If our O can just take care of the ball, our D will give us a great chance to win every game this yr.
