UCLA 66 - TEXAS 3
I'm sure many of you have not forgotten the last time the Bruins came to Austin. The year was 1997, which now seems like centuries ago. Since that time, the Bruins and Horns have gone in opposite directions. The only thing the two programs have in common is that since 1998, each has beaten U$C once.
Please be assured that all Bruin fans are greatly indebted to the Burnt Orange Nation for your Rose Bowl victory over that now-disgraced Trojan team. Having said that, we come to Austin this week feeling like we're going to have to pay for that beatdown in "97. Our victory last night over Houston, a far from flawless performance by the Bruins, gives us some reason to believe that the Bruins can play with the Horns on Saturday. Good luck to both teams.
Four friends and I are coming to Austin for the game. Last year, we went to Knoxville to watch the Bruins beat the Vols and Lame Kiffin. We were overwhelmed by the unmitiagted hospitality and generosity of the Tennessee faithful. We expect no less from the Horns' fans this weekend.
I have a couple of questions:
1) Where is the best tailgating area? We have no interest in hanging out with Bruin fans (we do it all the time) and want to experience what Texas football is all about.
2) In order to get into the prime tailgate area, how early should we arrive? I understand the game is set for 2:30.
We look forward to a great time not only on Saturday but also all weekend long in Austin. There's no need for you guys to seek revenge for what happened 13 years ago. After all, you beat us at Pauley a few years back. Can we call it even?
Thanks for your responses to this post and I look forward to meeting some of you this Saturday.

I thought this was going to be a "remember the Alamo!" kind of post...
You know, remember 1997, let’s get fired up about playing a mediocre UCLA team.
I was at that game. My soul died a bit that day.
Good luck scoring some free beers from Texas fans, but don’t start your conversations with the way you started this post. Them’s fighting words.
Hook 'em
But it was the best 63-point-loss ever!
Given all it set in motion…

Teams really should know better than to beat us by 60 pts
UCLA went flat after that win and entered into a decade of mediocrity. And look at the University of Chicago. They beat us by 60 pts in like 1904 and lost their football team altogether.

For the record...
That win was the first of 20 consecutive wins for the Bruins ending with the disastrous loss to Miami in ‘98 where a win would’ve put them in the first BCS championship game. The decade of mediocrity began the follwing year.
Sure, but Chicago didn't lose its football team immediately either
I stand by my original implication that the correlation is meaningful. ;)

I might include those that score 60 on us
That’s the benchmark for me for a full-fledged, cut the holes in the paper bag type of ‘total fiasco’. Another team to score 60 on us that comes to mind is the Houston Cougars (60-40 in 1987) whose program met its demise at the hands of the NCAA (from recruiting penalties and resulting coaching changes) and coach Jenkins.
But the last two 60 point games against us belong to you know who just north of the Red River. 65-13 in 2003 and 63-14 in 2000. There’s still some payback left to dish out there.

I would have been happy
with just the 3 goalposts that were torn down that season. (Mizzou, Baylor & Okie St.) Even without Rout 66, Mackovich was gone. Definitely my most painful memory from the Mackovich era. Close 2nd and 3rd would be the first losses to Rice and TCU in 30 years.

The truly dense area for tailgating
is the area just to the Southwest of the Stadium between the campus and the Capitol. Follow San Jacinto Blvd south from the Stadium and as you cross Martin Luther King you should see it everywhere.
The easier thing to do would be to go to Scholz Beer Garden (17th and San Jacinto) which is the most notable gameday bar, where the local radio station usually broadcasts from before and after the games, which is kind of at the epicenter of everything, and then start walking toward the stadium. If you do that, it will pretty much take you through the most intense tailgating.
Otherwise, there is a bit that happens in the parking lots for the LBJ Library just to the East of the stadium, but that, to me, is a bit more laid back than what you’ll find to the South. Also, if you’re looking for a college-bar type atmosphere, try Posse East or Crown and Anchor just to the North of campus.
Also, I was at the that game in Knoxville last year, as well. UCLA always seems to show up when you least expect it, as the Vols found out that day, and as USC found out a few seasons ago. I’m not taking this game lightly.
Cain and Abels
at 24th and Rio Grande, a few blocks west of campus, is also a popular college-bar tailgating spot, although it might not be available this weekend because I know PriceWaterhouseCoopers is having an invitation-only recruiting tailgate there Saturday (sister was invited).
Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you soon enough. If he's not, don't embarrass him.
Can someone please take this down or change the title?
I really don’t want to look at that score all week.
Sports is man's joke on God, You see, God says to man, 'I've created a universe where it seems like everything matters, where you'll have to grapple with life and death and in the end you'll die anyway, and it won't really matter.' So man says to God, 'Oh, yeah? Within your universe we're going to create a sub-universe called sports, one that absolutely doesn't matter, and we'll follow everything that happens in it as if it were life and death.'" - Sam Kellerman

It was like the Pearl Harbor of Texas football
There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

Haven't forgotten
I got the 40 Acres in ’95, the year after the infamous loss to Rice. My hs physics teacher was a Rice grad and rubbed it in the noses of those of us who were going to Texas in the fall of ’95.
Since I hadn’t set foot on campus at that point it didn’t sting as much as it should have. Rout 66 was another matter. I was there and my buddies and I stayed all the way to the end. Why?
Because we knew that this thing was going to get turned around (certainly not under Mackovic) and when it did, we’d remember that no matter how bad things might seem in the ‘glorious future’ (Simms v. Colorado in ‘01, Oklahoma through out his tenure, Lubbock in ’08 or even last year in the MNC game), we’d never have that bitter taste in our mouths as we did that day against the Bruins.
channel your inner Blake Gideon
use it to fuel the fire. then draw a targeting penalty. it might cost you a few yards beers on defense tailgating, but it’s sure to make you feel a whole lot better.

bad start off
I agree the subject of the post is not a good way when asking for hospitality lol. Sure some smack talk is normal. Its football. but you ask for tailgating advice and saying you want to experience the Texas atmosphere, then you shouldnt start off with the 66-3 subject post.
Please don't take the subject as smack...
A UCLA football fan has no entitlement to talk smack. I chose the subject only to get your collecdtive attention. I am neither naive nor dumb enough to speak of 66-3 when I’m in your presence on Saturday (especially if I’m trolling for free beers!) I apologize if any one is offended. It seems I have conjured up a bad memory. My bad…
No offense taken
as we have a much better defensive coordinator these days. Watch for him Saturday, he’s the guy with the staff. Sometimes he says ‘’You shall not pass.’ Sometimes it’s ‘You shall not run.’

Didn't offend me either. Lighten up, people!
78Bruin has obviously come in peace and even wants to tailgate with us. Can’t believe everyone’s so touchy about this post. The Horns will take care of business and send the Bruins home in pieces. Atleast make nice before their fans go through their upcoming beatdown this Saturday.
Put your tampons back in, guys
He’s clearly come in peace.
..so you knew that from reading the subject?

Yeah, maybe we need to lighten up.
78 Bruin probably thinks we’re a bunch of stereotypical ‘Texans’ after my above response — I worked in the Alamo, football, beer, and the phrase ’them’s fighing words" all in one post.

The correct reference for that song, now that it’s been cued up, given the theme of the thread, is “It was all I could do to keep from cryin’…”

Regarding the 1997 UCLA Win from a UCLA Fan
I’m a UCLA fan who is really looking forward to coming to Austin to see a game in such a storied stadium and with such a storied program. Although it must have painful at the time I always thought the UCLA win in 1997 was the best thing that ever happened to Texas football, because it led to the firing of John Mackovic and the hiring of Mack Brown who has consistently had Texas high in the national picture just about every year.
I’ve been fortunate enough to see Texas play a number of times especially since I go to the Holiday Bowl every year. I saw Major Applewhite’s greatest performance of 440 yards passing and coming back from a 19 pt. fourth quarter deficit to beat a Washington team coached by Rick Neuheisel. I saw Oregon with Joey Harrington beat Texas with Phil Simms in a down to the wire great game. I saw Colt McCoy looking great in a win over Arizona St., and I was at the national championship game against USC in the Rose Bowl. However I have never seen Texas play in Texas which will really be something special.
How do I see the upcoming game? First I picked UCLA to beat Houston, although I didn’t think it would be a dominating win like it was. I didn’t know that you have issues with your running game. We have a good defense and that gives us a chance in this game. Our defense really shut down Houston last night and also shut down Tennessee on the road last year. We no longer have Brian Price, but I now think our defense is comparable to last year’s. And that Houston win gave us a lot of confidence. On the other hand you obviously have an outstanding defense, and we have a struggling offense, and I really fear that we will have a lot of trouble moving the ball against you. So a UCLA win isn’t out of the question, but it’s admittedly pretty unlikely. However this program is on the upswing and has a lot of talent, and I really think we’re going to beat you in the Rose Bowl next year.
See you in Austin!
I'm pretty sure that was Chris Simms (not daddy Simms)
Maybe UCLA could catch Texas looking ahead to the RRS, but I kind of doubt it. Look for Texas to score on defense and create a short field for the offense. I think UT has had enough of the downhill running game experiment and will open it up a bit more. Use the pass to set up the run. It’s probably too late to try to install the triple option :-)
Correction
Thanks, of course I meant Chris Simms not his father. That game ended with him throwing into the end zone for the winning points, but Oregon held….great game.
One other Factor
That’s a good analysis soonerspeak. We do have one factor in our favor which is the kicking game where we probably have the best in the nation. Our punter Jeff Locke is really good and could make a difference in field position if we consistently get pinned back if we can’t move the ball. We also have Kai Forbath who won the Lou Groza award last year as the nation’s best field goal kicker. Of course it’s quite possible that the game won’t be close enough for our kicking game to make a difference.
Texas Should Dominate The Lines
The 1997 game featured a loaded UCLA offensive line and experienced QB.
This version of the Bruins O-Line employs 5 seniors but two are JC transfers and the other 3 are career second and third stringers. Though they have created holes for the running game; the pass protection is weak and Kevin Prince has a tendency to hold the ball too long.
Meanwhile on the other side of the ball the UCLA defensive front seven has been inconsistent. They’ve given up hundreds of rushing yards up the gut this season and I expect Texas to go there often; especially if they get an early lead.
Prediction: Texas 38 UCLA 17
Don't Underestimate UCLA's Defense
UCLA’s defense may have been somewhat inconsistent early on, but against Houston they were outstanding and absolutely dominating. And remember that Houston is a very good offensive team who had scored only 3 points going into the fourth quarter. I was at the game and was also at the Stanford game. The defense gave up 28 points to Stanford, and Stanford is without a doubt a better offensive team at this point than Texas with an outstanding offensive line and according to the NFL scouts the best quarterback in the nation in Andrew Luck. If Texas’s offense plays the way they have been they aren’t going to put up 38 pts on UCLA’s defense.
What I’m worried about is whether UCLA’s offense will be able to do anything against Texas’s defense. I fear that UCLA’s offensive line might get beaten badly. If they do manage to at least hold their own then we will have a ball game.
Big Tex and the Filthy Five might surprise you.
LT – Sean Sheller -RSr – Missed all of 2008 to a knee injury. Was slow, ineffective, and still recovering in 2009. He’s finally back to full speed.
LG – Darius Savage -RSr – Back surgery in the off season and missed spring ball. 2008 ended prematurely due to ankle injury.
C – Ryan Taylor aka “Big Tex” – RSr – Hasn’t yet had surgery at UCLA! A JC transfer from Tyler Texas and , I believe, our only current player that hails from Texas. He replaces starter Kai Maiava who is out for the season with an ankle injury.
RG – Eddie Williams – RSr – Missed the 2nd half of the 2009 season due to a fractured ankle. JC transfer from Mt. Sac in California.
RT – Micah Kia – RSr – Missed the entire 2009 season due to a torn ACL. Worked his way back to starting spot this past off season.
They have taken to calling themselves the “Filthy Five” and have actually been the best part of our offense the past 3 weeks. I thought their histories were pretty intriguing. That rag tag bunch will going up against your great Dline this week. I wonder how they’ll do…
I’ll be out to visit for the game. It will be my first time in Austin. I can’t wait!
welcome and Hook 'em!..

If you had wished that to a UCLA fan . . .
. . . before the game in 1997, what could have possibly happened during his trip to make his time in Austin better than the team’s? 40-for-1 lap dances at Sugars?
