Taylor Martinez concerns

I know this is way early but some Nebraskas fans who im friends with keep rubbing it in about how great Martinez is and how they want us to be undefeated when we go to Lincoln and they "ROLL" us. I know they have a good team and I know Martinez has been running all over the place. But I have a couple of questions. First is- Can this kid hold up? Taylor Martinez is 6-1 205. Can his body hold up to getting hit when he starts facing some better deffenses that will get to him and hit him when he tries to run. My other question is - How will our deffense respond to this guy? I honestly cant see Martinez running it all over us like he has to the sub par deffenses he has faced. I think we have the speed and talent to keep him contained and make this guy throw the ball. From all ive seen and heard he is not a great passer at all. I just want some other fans take on this. Again I know its really early but as I said Im just getting tired of hearing about how great he is and how Bo Pelini is the "best" coach in the BIG 12.

he's legit

running at least. The throwing could be worse (see Lord, Jammal) assuming that he’s supposed to be throwing behind the reciever all the time to support the cut back (at least 2 TDs that way against Wash). I’m worried more because I think that 14 points might get it done for them if the turnovers are even.

He doesn't have to be a good passer

Frost and Crouch kept defenses sort of honest, but they were just plain sick running the ball. I think Taylor Martinez has answered the biggest question Nebraska had in the pre-season, and they’re actually better off there than they are at RB. I really think discipline—specifically, staying home on assignments—is going to be mandatory if the defense is going to shut him down, which is absolutely can do.

very true about Frost and Crouch. So basically its gonna be a lot of zone deffense on our part z

Agree 100%

Texas defense will be the fastest defense that he has faced. Every decision gets rushed, every throw tougher, every window tighter. I will be absolutely flabbergasted if he doesn´t make some mistakes, and adjustments to make. Not knocking him, just saying.

The kid can run

To answer your first question, I don’t know, he is doing a good job at avoiding taking pops because he is damn quick and very fast. As you stated, he has not faced a defense any where near as salty as Texas, but with every game he gets more and more confident. His time will come, and he will get knocked on his butt, and its very possible that Texas will be the first that can really offer that threat throughout an entire game.

And to your second question, I don’t know if keeping him contained will alleviate the threat NU presents, with Helu and Burkhead in the backfield. Martinez is running the zone option read extremely well and has been pretty productive doing so thus far. Sure, the competition to this point has been less than stellar, but at some point you better be taking note of the recurring theme.

I look forward to watching both teams progress over the next several weeks before the big game in Memorial Stadium. Good luck with UCLA and OU.

by LCHUSKER on Sep 19, 2010 9:33 PM CDT reply actions

He has done well with the zone read

And Texas doesn’t see that as much in practice any more, so they were pretty rusty against Rice. Mostly it was corrected against Wyoming. It’s a tough offense to stop, especially if the offensive line is playing well and they certainly played well against Washington. The Nebraska offense is now extremely threatening and capable of producing big plays. Husker fans must be delirious with excitement after the abomination that was the Nebraska offense last season.

Martinez worries me.

Some of it probably wistful nostalgia for the Zac Lee era, but he is the real deal with the football in his hands. I think he’s plenty big enough to take some hits and keep going. Of course, that will depend on the type of hits he takes. I don’t think the Texas defense is going to intimidate him and the major concern is his ability to turn broken plays into big gains, as it is with every running quarterback.

I would say another problem is that Texas prefers to play man to man defensively, which can be dangerous against running cornerbacks because the secondary isn’t able to see when the quarterback takes off. It’s the main reason, I think, why Muschamp tried to play so much zone against the Aggies last year. Martinez isn’t nearly the passer that Johnson is, though he did make some nice throws against Washington — given time and open receivers and he will have a strong chance of getting it there.

by Wescott Eberts (GoBR) on Sep 19, 2010 9:47 PM CDT reply actions

good point about the zone

hopefully they will be better prepared this time around to use it – Muschamp said the secondary blew assignments last year after mixing in zone schemes at the last minute.

Martinez still has a long way to go as far as becoming a complete player. But the fact that he has those RBs and that defense makes him scary to a team like Texas. Nebraska’s offense right now is better than the Big 12 championship version. The defense probably isn’t as good, but neither is our offense. Make no mistake, we will be underdogs in Lincoln.

by BMG on Sep 19, 2010 11:18 PM CDT up reply actions

true

But we do have good speed on deffense and im almost possitive we will be mostly zone for Nebraska. I do beleive we can control him. I think if we can really shut down his running and the zone read and force him to pass and confuse him that he will make some bad descisions throwing. Atleast we have the BYE week to really prepare for that. Possibly Chiles will play “Martinez” in practice to prepare for Nebraska

by HookEmHorns512 on Sep 19, 2010 10:02 PM CDT reply actions

Concerned but...

It reminds me of the Nebraska game last year. Our offense was high scoring and everything but NU shut our O down with stellar D.

When you’re throwing or running it all over the place and then meet a great D that takes away your bread & butter then it kinda shocks your offense.

I think that will happen when Martinez faces Texas’ D. Alot of those big runs won’t be there and Texas will most likely focus on the run an take it away. If that happens, I think the game will turn on how Nebraska’s Offense adjusts and how successful they will be throwing the ball.

It will definitely be a great game and as of right now, I give the edge to NU because the game is at lincoln and our O seems to be a year away from being really good. But seriously…our D is freakin nasty and they play with a salty attitude that’s fun to watch.

Upon reflection, I'm worried that Martinez might lead Nebraska to a win over Texas...

If it was just Martinez

I don’t think the Horns would have much to worry about. But Nebraska’s O-line seems to have improved drastically over last year (against bad competition so far, but they do return a ton of experience), which means defenses have to defend against both the zone read and a straight-ahead power-running game featuring Helu and Burkhead. Washington sold out to stop the zone read early, and Nebraska ran straight down the field with the exact same A-gap run play for an entire drive in the second quarter on Saturday.

It’s essentially as if Nebraska has two entirely different running games at its disposal, and it could be really difficult to stop both at the same time.

That said, if any defense is capable of doing that, it’s Texas. As a Husker fan (and Austin resident – my olive branch is extended), I’m terrified of Texas’ defense. It’s probably the best in college football, and I’d trust Muschamp’s gameplanning far, far more than Shawn Watson’s. I don’t think either unit (Nebraska’s offense or Texas’ defense) can be dismissed with an easy “Well, they’ve never seen anything like us” line – it’s going to be a battle.

Jackson Jeffcoat was a monster against Tech

Martinez can run, but he can’t hide. He isn’t going to know what hit him when he runs to avoid Jeffcoat, and meets Gideon and/or Vacarro head on. Not pretty.

Just how exactly do you know Jeffcoat will own Martinez?

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 20, 2010 7:49 AM CDT up reply actions

While the tone is pretty aggressive, I think that he, as a Horns fan, is pointing out the game crushing risks involved in having your QB be the leading rusher on a team. The risk is all the greater when the guy is a true freshman that has yet to face the speed and violence of an elite defense… He gets to practice against one, but that doesn’t count all the way. Keep in mind that Texas is 3/3 on hobbling or injuring QBs this year, including that squirrel Carta-Samuels. Despite the dropped in production from our offense this year, the one change I’ve really enjoying is not seeing our leader getting smashed every other play.

by Tackchevy on Sep 20, 2010 8:09 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

This I can agree with.

And if Martinez were to go down, I don’t think there’s a soul in Nebraska who feels confident that Cody Green could lead the team to victory against UT. I’d even feel better about Zac Lee than Green at this point.

NU defense is looking very capable at this point of giving any offense fits. The coaching staff is doing a great job keeping these kids grounded, and instilling a focus for the job at hand.

Martinez does not worry me

Let me try a scenario out

5 Man Front
Jeffcoat, Keeston Randall, Tyrell Higgins/Okafor, Jeffcoat and Sam Acho (spying the QB on zone reads)

2 Man LB
Keenan Robinson (Zone coverage) and Emmanuel Acho (watching Helu)

4 Man Secondary
Curtis Brown/Chykie Brown and Aaron Williams as lock down corners on islands
Blake Gideon/ Aaron Williams Pass support
Christian Scott (Run Support)

Do you really think Taylor Martinez can run zone read against this bunch and not get his head ripped off?

by Crimson Fog on Sep 20, 2010 10:30 AM CDT reply actions

The key would be Sam Acho

What is so beautiful about this line up is that even if Nebraska runs a quick tempo offense (which I highly doubt against Texas) Acho can drop into coverage on obvious passing situations or move inside with Jeffcoat taking the buck role. With his best players on the field, Muschamp will dial up a lot of exotic blitzes in obvious passing situations

When I rewatched the game on my DVR, I could not help but notice the violence with which our DL was hitting the OL and how quickly they were collapsing the pocket. Zone read with a 4 man front will be difficult enough, add Acho or Jeffcoat to this lineup and it becomes nearly impossible.

VY and Cedric vs. OU in 2004

First, wanted to introduce myself. I graduated from Texas in ‘03 and I am currently going to school at the Hopkins-Nanjing Center over here in China. I’ve been a visitor to this site for about a year now and I don’t know what I’d do without my daily dose of Longhorn football analysis. Especially, since it’s about the only thing I read nowadays that’s not in Chinese. Anyways..

Saw this post about Martinez, he seems to be enough of a real threat. How are we going to stop him? Well.. this got me thinking about a game against the Land Thieves from the north that I know no one wants me to dredge up again but.. here I go anyways.

I was at this debacle and despite having Cedric Benson and Vince Young in the same backfield we were unable to score a single point the entire game. OU’s defense shut us down. Is our defense this year on par with theirs in 2004? Seems like it’s even better or could be.

Are Martinez and crew more of a threat than Vince and Cedric?

by Shanghaied Horn on Sep 20, 2010 12:22 PM CDT reply actions

NO

No way they are as big of a threat. Martinez and Vince do not belong in the same sentence. Not disrespecting your post at all btw. But no not nearly the threat Vince alone put on the field

by HookEmHorns512 on Sep 20, 2010 1:12 PM CDT up reply actions

My point exactly!

Actually, it was more of a rhetorical question. Of course there’s no way Martinez is the same threat as Vince. My point is if the OU defense in 2004 could stop Vince and Cedric with their defense why can’t we shut down the lesser threat from Martinez and crew with the “Boom” squad?

by Shanghaied Horn on Sep 20, 2010 10:09 PM CDT up reply actions

another statistic

Nebraska has faced 3 deffenses with rankings in total deffense of 116th and 96 and 38th. So he really hasnt seen a good deffense. Again Nebraska will look good this coming week as they take on North Dakota State.

by HookEmHorns512 on Sep 20, 2010 1:17 PM CDT reply actions

I'm not going to argue that Nebraska's played any defensive powerhouses

But with only three games played, Nebraska’s massive offensive output is a pretty big part of the reason those defenses are ranked so low to begin with.

by Cheeseandcorn on Sep 20, 2010 1:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Not exactly.

Western Kentucky has given up 49, 63, and 38. Washington has given up 23, 20, and 56. Idaho has only given up 0, 38, and 7, but the 0 was to an FCS team, and the 7 was to a still-winless UNLV team.

Nebraska has faced nobody. Martinez looked wild-eyed (not in a good way) for a good while at the start of the Washington game; how do you think he’s going to look after being introduced to Jeffcoat/Scott/Vaccaro/Gideon et al?

Huh?

Taylor Martinez’s first two passes against Washington were a 24-yard touchdown and a 55-yard pass to the 1. His first run was a (one-yard) touchdown, too. You can question some things about Martinez’s play so far (passing ability, tendency to fumble), but there’s zero evidence so far that Martinez fits the stereotype of the wild-eyed freshman.

I can't wait for this game

Regarding Martinez and our offense in general, I’m kind of in between the haters (Nebraska’s nearly as bad as last year, they just haven’t played anyone yet) and the kool aid drinkers (T-Magic for Heisman woooo). There is absolutely no question that our offense this year is much, much better.

But I’m not sure that’ll make an enormous difference in the NU-UT game. Frankly, I’m expecting both offenses to get pretty well dominated again. Texas is looking like the best defense in the country this year, but the Blackshirts are very good as well. On the offensive side, UT has looked…..pedestrian. Talented, but essentially putting up 14 points on Texas Tech won’t scare anyone, much less the Blackshirts defending Memorial Stadium.

On the other hand, I’m not expecting a great day out of the Husker offense. The spread option can be strung out and shut down by a fast, technically sound defense. UT’s defense looks to me like they fit that bill.

It will be up to both offenses to make a couple big plays, capitalize when they’re given good field position, not go three and out a bajillion times, and not turn it over. Basically, a more even version of the Big 12 title game last year.

It should be a great game and Memorial Stadium will be going nuts. Too bad that this game doesn’t really count for anything in the Big 12. The South race will have already been decided, and tbh, It’d take a small miracle for Nebraska to lose the North at this point.

I think you missed my point

I said “essentially” scoring 14 on Tech. Tech turnovers gave you guys the ball on like the TTU 6 and 10, which quickly turned around into 10 Texas points. They were nice plays by your defense (ok, well the botched snap that got past Potts was more of a gift, but you get my point). I’m not trying to diminish those points, good defense can lead to points no doubt, but its not like Gilbert marched the troops 80 yards down the field on either of those drives.

He did march 80 yards down the field twice when it ended in a UT turnover

if you’re not going to credit us when our defense gives us good field position and we make good on it, then will you credit us when we put in the work but came away w/ 0?

We had 3 “interceptions” in the Red Zone that were off tipped balls, each of which came after a sustained drive.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned....

the fumble issues? Somewhere I read NU had 15 fumbles or something and lost 7-8 of them?!? That’s not going to fly against better teams.

Plus when running doesn’t work against better defenses, Martinez will have to throw and like all NU QB’s (aside from Frazier), passing isn’t in their repotoire.

not worried about the D

We will spy martinez but they have 2 very capable backs and 1 or 2 good WR’s so we will have plenty to worry about. My main concern is giving them a short field with turnovers and drives stalling. We want them to have to earn their points with long drives and 3rd down conversions. That means better play by the O line and GG not getting rattled by what is sure to be a memorable atmosphere.

Tech was somewhat of a gauge, but really interested to see where we are after the OU game.

Playing in Lincoln is definitely worrisome because of how much NU hates us. But sometimes playing with too much emotion is bad because it makes you play out of character and undisciplined. If there was ever a yr for NU to beat Texas it would be this year because of our transition at the QB position.

We're not as one dimensional as you'd think

Martinez is completing somewhere around 65% of his passes, and has proven himself to be proficient on short and intermediate routes in particular. Our stats are heavily weighted toward running because that’s what we do best and we really haven’t had to throw it yet.

UW’s fans were up and down that they’d be fine because we “had a weak passing game” and they’d be able to crowd the line. Martinez was near 100 yards passing on his first two throws. Now, don’t get me wrong, UW’s defense sucks, and it’s easier to hit receivers that are running free, but the assumption that Martinez is like the second coming of Jammal Lord would be mistaken. He won’t shred most teams throwing 40 times a game, but he’s not a bad passer by any means.

Nebraska will be 1D against Texas

Nebraska has played horrible defenses. The guy will not be able to pass against Texas and will be going against an NFL D. It will be a low scoring game and whoever turns the ball over the least will win. Martinez won’t be a factor.

I don't know

It seems kind of reasonable to me to expect that one team’s starting quarterback might actually have some influence on the outcome of the game. It is, after all, the most important position on the field.

I guess we'll see

I do agree on the turnovers being important, but I think you’re fooling yourself if you think you’ll dispatch the 2010 Nebraska offense as easily as the 2009 version. No, we’re not going to run up 450 yards of offense and score 40 points on UT. But you’re not going to hold us to 4 first downs, either.

I agree

it won’t be as easy as 2009, but that was waaaay too easy! Nebraska will have to either force the UT offense to turn the ball over or they will have to score by throwing the ball. The turnover way will be easier than throwing.

heh

Obligatory response:

One more play from that waaaay too easy to stop offense last year and you guys lose. :P

Nah, I agree with you. It was sickening to see our defense’s effort wasted like that.

Oh he is

We also lost our two starting linebackers (remember we run the 4-2-5) before the season even started, so that double whammy did some damage to the middle of our defense. Our secondary is significantly better though. I’d imagine Texas will try awfully hard to get the running game going before putting the game on Gilbert’s arm. For that matter, Nebraska will too.

I don't know

If the running game struggles the two games leading up to the game, then I doubt Texas tries to run a whole lot. Texas new hope is DJ Monroe playin some RB this week against UCLA.

I hope you try to air it out

Not to sound overconfident, but I have every bit as much faith in our secondary as you guys do in your entire defense. It seems like Pelini’s put together a unit whose only purpose is destroying qb ratings.

I still think UT will try to establish the running game. If you can’t run on us, I really have a hard time envisioning a Longhorn win in Lincoln this year.

minus Prince

you have a bunch of over achieveing dudes who won’t play in the NFL. I think everything rides on what happens when Texas plays OU. If they win then expect the un-expected. If Texas stumbles against OU, expect Texas to play a bunch of young players.

Don't forget Dennard

He’s our other corner and has been outplaying Amukamara so far this year. Most people are expecting him to get drafted at the end of his college career too.

And could you explain why Texas would field a bunch of youth at Nebraska following a loss to OU? I mean, yeah the south division and national title aspirations are gone, but that strikes me as putting UT at even a greater risk of losing a second game…

because

the younger guys are better but unexperienced (Darius White, Paden Kelly, Trey Hopkins etc).

Just Nebraska has played horrible defenses??

Texas has faced teams this year averaging a ranking of 76th in the country on defense, while Nebraska has faced teams with an average ranking of 67th on defense.

Texas has faced teams this year averaging a ranking of 95th on offense, while Nebraska has faced teams with an average ranking of 79th on offense.

Just the facts.

Wide Splits for NU offense?? can it be exploited?

i watched that re-run of the NU/WA game last night. damnit. that Martinez kid looked fantastic. however the announcers pointed out how wide the splits are for the OL. surely coach BOOM can come up with something to exploit this. hopefully?

Huskers & Taylor Martinez--Horns are doomed!

Taylor Martinez is the “Real Deal” and scares the hell out of me. This kid is only a freshman! Thank God the Huskers will be off our schedule after this year, because after they undress the Longhorns in front of a National audience this season, I will be more than happy to wave them goodbye as they head off to the Big-10. Nebraska clearly outplayed us last year, with only a rule violation by the refs giving us a last play to kick a field-goal to save us. If they had anything that even resembled an offense last year, we would have never been in the BCS Championship game. Suh kicked Colts butt soundly and kept him from winning the Heisman trophy. The Huskers are out for blood this year and have the tools to finish where they left off. I hate to say it, but the Horns are doomed!
