Postgame Celebration Thread: Texas Handles Rice, 34-17

The season is underway, and Texas took care of business in week one, defeating the Rice Owls 34-17 at Reliant Stadium in Houston. Those of you expecting a badass team this year probably realize that it's going to be a work in progress to get there. That said, even in a choppy performance, it was easy to see why we're going to be tough to beat, and why we're going to be a tougher and tougher out each week.

Hey, My Guys looked pretty good. Overall... well, we've got a long way to go before the real competition begins. Which is soon...

This is your celebration thread. Enjoy this one a little bit... And then we'll start to talk about what Texas needs to do better.

Not as lackluster as you think

Texas dominated more then then score would indicate. Other then the field goal on Rice’s firs drive where Rice threw a curve ball at the Texas defense, Rice’s first TD was a fluky play and luck and the only other score was a late game bs TD. Rice ate a lot of clock and didn’t beat themselves minus the 2 turnovers that led to 10 points. Offense looked dominant in the 1st half and just out of sync in the 3rd quarter. Mack finally decided to put the backups in with not much time left and Case didn’t get as much work in as Brown and Co. would have liked for a first game.

This is why you don’t play a good-great team out of the blocks with to “pre-season” games.

by Ryan2907 on Sep 4, 2010 5:56 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really

Few thoughts:

Rice’s 17 was kind of a fluke.

GG look posed and overall pretty good. He looked good in the pocket but needs to step up into the pocket more. He need to fire the ball off a hair quicker. He also needs to work on faking the play-action pass better, especially if that is going to be such a big factor in the offense. The things is did poorly didn’t bother me that much. They are all things he can correct with experience.

Newton looked noticeably quicker and more agile than Cody J. I think Fozzy has the best moves but Newton is the best all around back. He needs to get most of the carries.

Vaccaro is really, really good!!! He can bring it. He showed flashes last year.

Keenan Robinson was great too.

Sam Acho is a beast. The D-Line is so fast but lacks bulk. At times it was Jones, Acho and Jeffcoat out there.

They have got to get the ball to Goodwin more.

Overall the defense kinda looked out of sorts. They couldn’t defend the ZONE READ early on!?!?!?!? That’s all they’ve seen for years.

Texas showed VERY little on offense. They will force this running game to work. It will have plenty of growing pains this year.

Look for my “We’ve Got Issues” column Monday!

1-0. I'll take it.

Even though it was somewhat pedestrian. Our D, however, has the makings of something special.

Goodwin and Newton looked pretty darn good

Fozzy and CoJo had a few good plays each as well. Malcolm looked pretty darn good, I must admit. The line wasn’t terrible. Gilbert looked like a rookie with some ability.

The defense had some serious brainfarts, as did two defensive players while they were returning punts (Brown on the bad decision that didn’t come back to bite him, and AW on the flubbed return). But overall the defense looks like there’s a lot of talent that could knit together really well.

I'm generally fine with what I saw

A lot of things did annoy me though, mostly because they were just silly mistakes. The 34-17 score is deceptive because one TD was complete, dumb luck and the last was off a muffed punt that was meaningless anyway. Then again, it’s hard to convince a lot of people that simply looking at the final score is not exactly that smart.

The feeling that I got from the game was that it was an NFL preseason game. The coaches came in with some specific things they wanted to see and weren’t that concerned about gameplanning for Rice in particular. It was a mostly unexciting game, but as long as we progress from this point I’ll take it.

Dont like our new offense so much...

This would’ve been a much better looking score had it not been for the refs that must’ve been paid to call those ridiculous calls! I think we learned a lot as horn fans, mainly for me I learned to miss our old spread offense…I completely see the reason for the change, but I think we need a better mix of passes from the 4 & 5 wide sets because hardly any team can do it better us.this slow pace running downhill is ok for now, but we’re gonna have to take more shots down field in the future IMO.

Happy we won!!

But, there were some concerning items today. No need for warning bells quite yet, but they’re on standby.

I can’t imagine the coaches would be too pleased once they break down the film. Some issues need to be cleaned up.

I believe Cody Johnson lost his starting job today though….he was taking too long to hit some lanes the O-line were creating. Newton and Whittaker did a better job.

by silky51 on Sep 4, 2010 5:48 PM CDT reply actions

Lined up too deep to sync with line.

It wasn’t just Cojo…several plays the line had made the push and then some before the back ever got there instead of hitting it just as the gaps occurred…Rice had time to react as a result.

Texas wins this legitimately, which is the most important thing

And furthermore, Mizzou beat Illinois, and K-State is grinding UCLA into the ground with the best RB in college football.

We still have a chance

A lot of football left to play, no reason to over-react to anything that happened today. Although its not what I wanted to see, things are going to get better.

I also don’t think we are going to run the ball as much against OU/Nebraska, we are going to do whats best to win, and that is probably have Gilbert throw the ball more then 23 times.

I liked the running game, you could there was a difference, but it is a work in progress.

I just didnt think GG looked like he did in the spring. it seemed like he was not stepping into his throws, or just nervous…honestly if he throws some of those passes against ou,neb or even osu, we might be seeing them ran in for 6, but I think at the end of the day a victory is always a good thing!!!

Stock or Stripdown Offense

Generally I don’t mind hiding some schemes or going Vanilla, but its risky with a QB who is new under center. Liked the change of attitude but more balance and opportunities for Garrett to get in rhythm are necessary.

Situationally GG needs more opportunities to practice Passing in the Red Zone, Passing over the Middle (only 2 I remember are Chiles and the Deep Ball to Malcolm), Check downs to TE or HBs.

Defense looked solid (save for two dropped INTs)! Love the young guys on D!

by HornsUpInLA on Sep 4, 2010 5:57 PM CDT reply actions

That was a conservative win

But a win nonetheless. I think the offensive philosophy was to keep things simple and not tip our hand to future opponents. There’s a lot to improve upon but you can’t argue with the result. Guys who impressed: Eddie Jones, David Snow, Kenny Vaccaro. Justin Tucker showed a lot of leg but missed one he should have hit. Tre Newton won a starting job.

I agree, Texas and Florida drop in the polls. If Oklahoma wins big they break into top 5

The pundits (ESPN) have OU winning it all – the AP writers will likely jump on this bandwagon of OU wins big and make them a top 5 team.

There was a lot of promise that went unrealized.

2 dropped pics that would have been TDs (but we did get 1 other one).

2 missed FGs, with 1 blocked.

Stopped on our own goal short of a score.

A muffed punt that led to a Rice score.

A fluke Rice TD at the end of the half.

And we still win 34-17.

There were good things, too.

Maybe we really are developing a running game. Jury’s out on this one. Rice is no OU or KSU.

A couple of really nice downfield throws by GG.

Our FG kicker appears to have excellent range.

Our OL did a good job and they are young. Hopefully they got a lot of confidence this week with more to come next week against Wyoming.

Malcolm Williams looked good.

Vaccaro is just a beast. He could become the leader of the D if he ever gets to start.

Yea, lots of good stuff in there today. Especially the score.

After watching the end of the Ole Mis game. It seems clear to me that our D will be winning games for us for a little while. I’ll take the win but can’t say I wasn’t screaming in frustration at times.

by LonghorninRaiderland on Sep 4, 2010 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

I thought it was a pretty good win.

You’ve got to think of this season as sort of like 2006. Breaking in a new offense after a very successful season when we lost our star QB. There are going to be some growing pains, but in general, we played well with a few problems. Chykie had his customary brainfart, both he and AW dropped sure pick-sixes (though AW’s was on a phenomenal play), AW had the muffed punt at the end and both he and Curtis made stupid decisions fielding punts, there was a freak Rice TD, we once again had trouble inside the 5 (though Tre’ managed to punch it in a few times later in the game), the O-line wasn’t as dominant as they should have been against a team like Rice, etc.

But I think we generally played very well defensively (considering we had absolutely no idea what kind of offense they would run) and played pretty well on offense. I think the under center running worked well enough to open up some lanes downfield off of play action and Gilbert’s got a cannon. He had a few bad passes, but it’s his first start and most importantly, the bad passes are mechanical, not because he’s making bad reads. I only counted 1 pass that was interceptable, and that was an incredibly athletic pass breakup by the Rice LB. I swore GG had managed to get it over his head before he made a great leap.

I think we’re going to be really, really good this year. But you have to walk before you can run. This game was about getting our legs under us with this new offense, and I think we did that very well.

by billyzane on Sep 4, 2010 6:23 PM CDT reply actions

Score could have easily been

Something like 49-6.

-Rice doesn’t get BS TD or play isn’t incorrectly ruled TD by refs and they have to kick a FG
-We get one of the two or three PI calls they refs blatantly missed
-Tucker makes one FG and other isn’t blocked
-We convert better on third and short situations
-We don’t run a toss on 4 and .00016494 inches on the goal line
-A.J. Williams catches the ball on the punt
-Chykie Brown and A.J. don’t drop the two easiest pick 6s in history
-We don’t give Case 4th-quarter playing time
-GD opens up the offense

Speaking of offense, it was a mixed bag. The O-Line is definitely better running the ball this season, and they looked fine in the passing game against Rice’s decent D-Line. Davis obviously showed probably as little of the offense as possible, giving us an extremely odd mixture of dominance and ineptitude. I’d looking forward to seeing more in the screen game, more plays from the Gun, and actually passing to the uber-talented WRs. Malcolm and Quise looked really good. The O NEEDS to get opened up next game; we can’t just start trying stuff in a real game in Lubbock. Matthews was absolutely non-existent, something I really despised seeing and think could bite us later. Don’t try to save something that is supposed to be a HUGE part of the offensive change this season.

Defensively…well, it’s hard. At times we looked unreal, and at times I was like, “Really guys? This is Rice.” The two dropped pick 6s were pretty embarrassing. Chykie had another bad, bad blown coverage and we weren’t as dominant on the defensive line as I would have liked. On the bright side, Vaccaro was phenomenal. Jeffcoat and Wilson will be superstars sooner instead of later. Robinson looked like a different player—he and Eacho are the truth at LB. Scott and Gideon were solid as well. Eddie Jones dominated basically the entire game. Was not overly impressed with the corners; this wasn’t really their type of game with all the running, but they were pretty lackluster in run support.

So I’m not “It’s the end of the world as we know it!” and I’m not at all excited. I liked our dedication to the running game, but the coaches proved the freaking point so let’s get ON with it against Wyoming. We need a blowout and some confidence going into the Tech game, which is already looking like a fiasco waiting to happen. Hook ’em!

Agreed

This isn’t Colt who has a couple years under his belt. We need to let GG go with the training wheels off prior to our trip to Texas Tech. Which means next week better open it up a bit.

by HornsUpInLA on Sep 4, 2010 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

OH

And I forgot GG. A whole post could (and probably will) be written about his performance, but I was not impressed by his passing. I know it’s early in his career still (very early), but he had a LOT of time to throw all day and frequently underthrew his receivers or just missed. It’s like his arm died on him a few times. On the positive side, he looked very confident and completely in control of the offense, which is great news. Also his pocket presence is excellent. I have complete confidence in him, but he’ll need to play better next game because this isn’t Bama where you can completely lean on the running game.

by GoHornsGo90 on Sep 4, 2010 6:31 PM CDT up reply actions

When he stepped up in the pocket he had some really nice tosses – Chiles and MW, but just didn’t do it enough. He miffed a few while rolling out and dropping back.

play wasn’t pass interference. The crowd got all upset, but he just wasn’t strong enough to get back across the db. The corner had outside position already and Kirk tried to get through him to get the ball. Regardless the ball was uncatchable anyways.

Cody Johnson

He appeared to perform exactly the same as what we have seen previously. I am just amazed that what we heard was completely different than what we were told. I guess there are players who practice good and then there are players who just plain play football. I think Tre, for his size, is an attacking type of back. Good explosion. Good vision. Too bad for Cody but until he figures out he is not Melton, he will be relegated to short yardage opportunities.

by TXStampede on Sep 4, 2010 6:27 PM CDT reply actions

Injured?

Why was Cody out of the lineup so much? He started out pretty well, then Tre came in a did well, but they never really went back to Cody – he came in sparingly after that. I thought on some of the goal line sits in the 2nd half the Cody would be in for sure.

by DavidB64 on Sep 4, 2010 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I was really surprised by that also. Thought he’d get the chance to win the job, but the exact opposite seemed to happen. I thought he was okay, but not as dominant or lean as I expected. Damn…

Decent win for season opener

GG showed pretty good poise. Malcolm Williams had a lot of clutch plays for first down and nice catch over the middle. Overall…it’d seemed like a preseason game, but then again, I guess it was for Texas.

Lots to work on: OL needs more work. I like the play call on 4 and goal from the 1 on the first drive, but the OL was porous. The play on 3 and goal from the 1 may not work for us. The OL didn’t blast into the end zone against a much smaller team and the motion man was slow to engage. The defensive interior needs a lot of work. Hopefully the DT’s and MLB’s can make significant improvements, so that we don’t have to scheme around the problem. Kick off coverage needs a lot of work too. Punt receivers…will be getting an earful.

Here’s to a week of improvements.

With all the bad things that happened.........

and we win comfortably.

Rice somehow knew we were going to come out and run the ball. They put 8 in the box and made it hard running.

We didn’t know what Rice would do or who they would start at QB.It took us a couple of series to catch on.

Kirkedol(sp) didn’t show much.I wanted to see more of Davis. Goodwin looked very good and Williams was dependable.

From our game plan it seemed that GD was in a vanilla mode.I hope that was the case.

The only real concern I had was with our kickoff coverage which lets the other team start at thier 30 or better just like last year.

I’m glad we got all that bad junk out of our system now.

They say the most improvement for a team comes between the first and secon games.Let’s hope that is the case for us.

I think Mack has spoiled us so much that we expect a blowout almost every game.

by TCB Orange Dino on Sep 4, 2010 7:16 PM CDT reply actions

6 or 7 in the box

Rice only had 8+ in the box on goal line situations. Most of the game they played with a nickel look which put mainly 6 sometimes 7 in the box. We countered with a lot of 11 looks which gave us a 6 on 6 blocking matchup. We shouldn’t been able to produce more explosive runs against that kind of defense, but there were only two I can remember off the top of my head (1 from Cody, 1 from Fozzy).

I was pretty disappointed with the performance

It was obvious that the o-line hasn’t had to run block in years. They are soft, especially for Texas, and especially for the running game we are trying to establish.

Fozzy was the only RB to average more than 4 YPC, and it drops below 4 if you remove his 21 yard scamper

Garrett made terrible passes. This is our QB?

The defense played like they should have with the exception of a few stupid mistakes, but I attribute all of that to week 1 rust.

All that said, I don’t see our 10 win streak ending this year. We clearly have enough talent to win football games even if we don’t play well. If GG can start to throw even moderately accurate passes, then the offense should start to be more efficient. I really like the new offensive system. Assuming that there are more than the like five plays we saw today, and assuming that the o-line learns how to open up holes, and assuming that GG can hit receivers, and assuming that GD figures out that we will never, NEVER be able to effectively run out of the shotgun, then we should be able to put up points in bunches.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 4, 2010 7:51 PM CDT reply actions

What?

Why on earth would you remove Fozzy´s 21 yard scamper? No logic.

I don't get that post either

For example, Newton’s ypc would’ve been much higher had he not been the guy chosen to carry the ball at the goal line.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. by burntorangehorn on Sep 4, 2010 8:44 PM CDT up reply actions

The goal line carries would have been less detrimental to his YPC if he had been able to get into the end zone (goes back to o-line being weak) and not have to go run after run trying to get past the LOS.

I’m not trying to suggest that Fozzy’s 21 yard carry shouldn’t be considered or anything, it was a hell of a run, but it is a pretty common practice to, when analyzing statistics, consider what the data looks like when outliers are removed. When the single play of exaggerated success is not influencing the data, the performance goes back to being mediocre. It isn’t like I’m trying to twist data to fit my hypothesis; if Fozzy went out there and did bang out 6 yards after 6 yards, then it wouldn’t be worth mentioning.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 4, 2010 9:42 PM CDT up reply actions

The problem is that outliers aren't typically removed from all averages

Remove the high outliers from all RBs’ statistics, and 4.0 isn’t the expectation anymore.

a running back shouldn’t be expected to get 4 ypc unless he happens to get a couple of particular massive gains? Obviously that is the case with our offense, but it isn’t the expectation in general, and especially isn’t for run-oriented teams.

21yds. = massive?

I don’t think that’s a valid argument.

Look at Jamaal Charles vs. Nebraska, and remove his runs over 20yds. See where his average is. Fair, right?

That is a perfect example of what I'm talking about

33 car, 290 yds, 8.8 ypc

if you take out runs of 20+ yards

29 car, 116 yds, 4.0 ypc

with the exception of his “outliers” he still had a respectable (barely, if 4 yards is where we draw the line) game, but the fact that he busted 4 huge runs clearly jacked up his ypc. We sure as hell needed those outliers too; that game was one of the most forgettable wins of the McCoy era.

I think what this is coming down to is the fact that the stat of ‘yards per carry’ creates this idea that whatever the value is, that is how many yards the carrier got every time he touched the ball, which in many cases (like this neb game) is not at all true. I was drawing attention to this, in case anybody might be tempted to use Fozzy’s 5.7 ypc as an example of our running game being effective.

But it’s whatever. I’ve convinced myself that a lot of it was first week bumps and playing in Reliant. And I can’t wait to see this D play a comically 1-dimensional OU offense.

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

I think what he's saying is that

It is far better to have an average 4 yards per carry with zero standard deviation (literally 4 yards every carry) than to have a lot of <4 yard rushes and one big rush that makes your average 4.

It’s consistency vs. luck.

by pleaseplaykindle on Sep 4, 2010 11:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Obviously it'd be best to have zero standard deviation

I mean, if Cody Johnson could pull 2.5ypc every down, zero deviation, Texas would be able to run four downs and get a first-down every time, with the ultimate result of a touchdown every drive. Why not?

Slow Start? Not Really...

START QTR POSS. YARD PLAYS YARDS RESULT
08:04 1 05:18 TEX 38 12 57 Turnover on Downs
02:05 1 02:10 RICE 30 4 -4 Field Goal Good
12:08 2 04:06 TEX 30 9 69 Rushing Touchdown
06:24 2 00:00 RICE 10 0 11 Fumble Return Touchdown
04:54 2 03:26 RICE 50 9 50 Rushing Touchdown
00:00 2 00:00 TEX 40 0 0 End of Half

Out Of the 4 (yes, only 4) first half drives, Texas Scored on 3 of them and the one they didn ‘t score on was stopped on 4th down at the 5 yrd line. So the offense was playing well in the first half but didn’t have a lot op opportunities. Offense sputtered in the 3rd and only had 2 chances in the 4th to do anything.

The issues are very workable from this game. Nothing in the game that can’t be fixed in a week.

by Ryan2907 on Sep 4, 2010 7:55 PM CDT reply actions

I went to the game...

These were my impressions live; the offense looked “ok” with flashes of “really good”. Garrett’s timing looks a little off still on some of his passes. There were a lot of “first game of the season” mistakes and timing issues. The O-line looked like a work in progress again with some flashes of brilliance. I expected them to dominate Rice up front more, but it was their first game as a unit.

The defense looks “really good” with flashes of “sheer greatness”. The defense is going to win some games for us this year… and yes, Kenny Vaccarro is a beast, truly. The Bros. Acho are awesome too. Jackson Jeffcoat looked good too when he was in, and Chykie, well he just needs to hang on to pick sixes.

It was a win, and a decent win at that, it could have been better and it could have been much worse. I am hopeful for the season and not down about it at all. We will have some challenges this season, it ain’t gonna be a cruise like it has been at times with Colt and certainly with Vince, but we should do well this year, maybe even better than “well” depending upon how much they can correct from today.

Play like you mean it...

I was there too, and I was impressed w/ Rice

My first impression was that this didn’t look like a 2-10 Rice team, I think they’ll do better this year.

Young team

Looked like there were some nerves on offense, GG especially. He’ll need to settle down or we’ll notch losses in OU and Neb.

The package they installed for Goodwin/Monroe/Hales looked good. Constraint plays and everything, but for some reason, GD ran the base play like 5-6 times, but only one sweep and one QB roll out. The sweep went for 20+, the roll-out was botched by GG but easily could have been a TD.

Apparently they thought Mack should have been more “classy” and, you know, just punt and junk LOL.

Nothing the Ducks can do when the other team can’t stop a cold. And they did pull back in the second half, only putting up 13 points.

Mostly possitive things for UT

GG looked a bit over cautious and protective but overall not a bad first game against what looked to be an improved Rice team. It’s only one game, but CJ was not what I had expected. He seemed slow and the down hill running style advertised didn’t materialize. The other backs, Newton & Fozzie, looked better. The defense looked as good or better than expected. Barring any injury to Randall they look to be a top defense. The defense should keep them in most games while the offense matures. On an unrelated note, do you think Rogaine or hair plugs is the best way to go after you’ve pulled out all your hair?
