Rice - Quick Hits

  1. John Chiles on a very nice post.  Me.want.more.  And I don't care who it is.  GG has a gun and we need to exploit that.  And often.
  2. Garrett Gilbert velocity.  Nice vision.  He needs to work on timing but I'm not worried.  Very conscience about protecting the football.  I LIKE THAT HE SPREADS THE BALL AROUND.  All the receivers were involved in the game.
  3. Offensive Line - very good improvement.  It is quite apparent the linemen prefer a 3-point stance.  I know, I know, we're talking Rice.  But this was a far more aggressive platoon than what we have seen the last few years.  And about time.
  4. Special teams - I am concerned about a) lack of deep kickoff's in a domed stadium, b) allowing a C-USA dweller returns to the 30 yard line, and c) our punt returners (you hear me Aaron and Curtis).  You will hear Mack speak to this quite a bit in tomorrow's presser.
  5. Ball Hawk - we left points on the field by missing the interceptions for scores.  Is this what relegated Aaron to nickel status?  In looking at his punt receiving decision making might.could.be.
  6. Running Game - where was this new Cody Johnson?  I hope his teammates pick him up on the bus ride home as I'm sure he is beating himself up.  Hang in there kid.  There will be other opportunities. But next time take advantage of them. Ok?
  7. Malcolm Williams - psych!  Everybody was down on him.  That man is a playa'.  Just you watch.  Huge confidence booster for him today.  I see him having a break-out junior campaign.
  8. Finally....Kenny Vaccaro.  Fine Corinthian leather.  His stick swinging, hammer toting, lumber bringing swagger is what this team needs to emulate at every damn position.  Period.  Nothing but nasty.  Watching him play reminded me of something but could not quite put my finger on it.  Then I remembered a post by a Barker recalling a stenciled wallet as carried by a bad mo-fo character in a cult movie years ago.  Yea, Ezekiel 25:17, "The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know I am the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon you."

...Nough' said about that dude.

I'm not worried.  Few games under our belt and we are going to be a machine.  But y'all are going to have to get used to less scoring.  On both sides of the ball.  I'm talking old school, smashmouth, football.

Damn I'm glad the season has started.

just nasty

Glad he got some good PT. Is he the starter now over Scott?

by BON Addict on Sep 4, 2010 9:40 PM CDT up reply actions

It looked to me like he was coming in to play nickel, which I liked cause he’s closer to the line so he could help in run support. Plus, Aaron Williams would move outside and it got Chykie off the field…

by mr.manager on Sep 4, 2010 10:51 PM CDT up reply actions

He should take playing time away from Chykie or Gideon..

Scott is a beast too but only got one chance or so to bring the lumber against Rice.

Malcolm Williams

Williams needs to learn how to catch the ball in stride and keep running. Several times in the game he could have caught the ball and ran a long way but his legs decided to die on him and he just caught the ball like he was against the sideline. Come on Williams, this isn’t catch the football and fall down!

by Ryan2907 on Sep 4, 2010 8:00 PM CDT reply actions

I don't care if

he stops and does one handed push-ups, as long as he is consistently catching the ball. He caught every ball thrown his way. That’s key for his confidence this season. He’ll get his “stride” soon enough.

Exactly

Williams needs to be consistent. If that means stopping dead in his tracks and cradling the ball to complete 4/4, I’m fine with that. He’ll come along.

To me it seemed very very vanilla

on both O and D. I have no problem not wasting the bullets on Rice.

Even playing extremely vanilla, I'd expect our run game against Rice

to look better than what we’ve seen the last 2 years. It didn’t. 4.3 yards per carry against that caliber of opponent, when improving the run game has been the #1 goal for the last 9 months, has to go down as a pretty big disappointment.

Hell, we had to resort to fake reverses to get even decent gains up the middle for most of the game.

I think the Rice D played extremely well.

Never got down, tackled extremely well, challenged the runners and receivers, played pretty good assignment football…best defense by them that I’ve seen in a long, long time.

I don't see too much Rice football

but I agree that the Owl defense appeared to be in mid-season form. The biggest difference was speed. The scheme was excellent and they are very disciplined. With that said, we did not throw too many different looks at them. I am now the biggest Rice fan this season as we need all of our OOC opponents to win.

I wanted Major Applewhite

To get the Rice job after Graham left for Tulsa, but after a few years under Bailiff, I have to say I’m happy with the direction he’s got the Rice football program going. Judging from what I saw yesterday, this team won’t go 2-10 (barring another injury plague as in 2009, of course).

But I have to say I have some misgivings about the running game. I kept thinking to myself, if we’re having this much trouble running against Rice, what about Nebraska, UCLA, Tech? In the first half there was a real commitment to running the ball, but that commitment seemed to wane in the second half. I was hoping that GD would see it through the entire game, but perhaps he wanted to get Gilbert some meaningful work in as well.

As the old saying goes, we’ll have learned a lot more about this team after next week’s game than this week’s opener.

The shortest distance between two points is under construction.

They ran 2-1 over passing and ganged a lot of it early.

When Mack and GD go conservative, jeez, they do go conservative to a fault.

They’ve practiced running 60-70% and that’s about the percentage break in plays. Now they have some serious reassessments: CJ just isn’t hitting the hole quickly enough and I question his vision…he doesn’t see the hole well, esp. compared to Tre. So, CJ is much better suited to jumbo packages, running downhill situations re: the clock and should never be sent out on sweeps; he’s a fullback.

There will be a ton of adjustments next week; things will be much clearer. I suspect they’ll not show Matthews or the passing game much until the Tech game. I suspect we will be running 60% of the time vs. Wyoming as well.

Definitely disappointed in Aaron Williams today

his play was inconsistent, whiffed on lot of tackles, dropped INT. definitely not a good day for AW.

on a sider note, Chykie needs to get his shit together..his play was pretty much horrendous today

first game jitters i think for everyone. Gilbert did not turn the ball over so thats a big time positive. I gotta say for all the hype on McGuffie he did show some exsplosiveness but mostly i saw some very not so smart play from him trying to reverse the field a few times.

Just what exactly...

do you expect out of a team that has so many replacement parts getting revved up for the first time?

No preseason games here bud…this game was very vanilla and they did some thing well and some not so well. I felt Mack summed it up quite nicely…this game could have been 45-10. People get too caught up in margin of victory.

I did not see weakness out of GG’s arm…I saw a few throws behind his receivers and some where he appeared to hold the ball a bit too tightly, causing it to bounce in off target a bit.

AW has me a little concerned with return duties and I am still a bit concerned with the running game. I figure this will continue until M. Brown’s sophomore season.

Try to enjoy this team this year. Realistically, we are a 2-3 loss team. If they happen to put something special together, consider it a double yolk, you know…an unexpected gift.

I think

Mack and Co. wanted to force this team to rely on the rushing more to prove to the team and themselves that they can. When you look at the final games stats, Texas’ offense was pretty balanced and that’ what Mack and Co. wants.

by Ryan2907 on Sep 5, 2010 7:26 PM CDT via mobile reply actions

@Ryan2907 you are right. They wanted to say “Hey we are gonna run and no matter what we are gonna try and pound the ball” Yes they could have went ahead and started passing but your right. They wanted the team to beleive in the run and by into it for sure. No turnovers by the offense and thats a good sign
