About scheduling "cupcakes"
Soooo, after opening against Rice today, I was wondering what everyone here at BoN felt about scheduling cupcakes for openers. Yes, im glad we play a decent team from time to time (OSU, TCU, etc) but love seeing our Horns "practice" against the like of UNT, ULL, etc. Im all for winning against ANY team, as long as its not a FCS team that we payed for a win.
I just think that if we would have scheduled Ohio State or Boise State or anyone else like yall are always clamoring for, then we would have gotten beat. I love watching blow-outs (as they are easier for me to relax and enjoy the freshman play) and would take 4 easy wins over the likes of Rice, Wyoming, UCLA, and FAU over a loss to Oregon anyday.
The game next week vs Wyoming will be tougher and they have a good offense to go with a decent defense. It should be a good game, and hopefully over by halftime. I attached a little poll to get everyones opinion just for fun:

There is no reason to open with a juggernaut...
that being said, I hope VaTech lays the wood to Boise St. They used to be likable. But, there is nothing to gain by playing the likes of them.

Rice is fine
Rice is at least a well known program with roots back to SWC. UH would also fit that description. What I despise are the unknown directional schools from Southern states, who are just on the schedule because they come here without a return game.
Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. If they get mad, you're a mile away AND you have their shoes.

I’m guessing you don’t think that’s likely after your post in another fanpost.

Wyoming
Don’t forget that Texas plays Wyoming at home with 100,000 fans packed into DKR.

I think our new offensive style will let a team like Wyoming hang around..
I’m thinking a Texas 31 Wyoming 16 kind of game.
UCLA All-Time vs. Oregon: 39-23 (as of 2009)
So how do you know when you schedule UCLA that they aren’t going to be the traditional Bruins. When we scheduled Ohio State for 2005 season it was in the time frame (here are the records for OSU) right as Tresel got there in 2001.
2001 7 5
2000 8 4
1999 6 6
Nobody knew they would be a powerhouse again.
We don’t scedule these teams the year before we play them.
Hey, you would think a team like Wyoming or Air Force would be pretty safe to schedule, but every once in a while those teams get themselves together a fairly good year. Kind of like that 2008 Rice team that went 10-3 and we got NO credit for beating them 52-10.
When we scheduled Ole Miss, they looked like they might be pulling themselves out of the basement of the SEC west. But now? Looks like another cupcake in 2 years.
Ideal schedule to me is
a cupcake first (ULL or NMSU), a respectable but lower-ranked team second (Purdue, Marshall, NC State) and then a big name program (Ohio St., Florida St.). It allows you to warm up and gain rhythm while still boosting your SoS.
The worst is playing a big program out of the gates. The outcome of that game is close to meaningless. I remember the Miami-FloridaSt rivalry was nearly the best in college football throughout the 90’s when it was played in October. Then, inexplicably, they decided to play the game as their opener, and the rivalry went all to hell. Those games were terrible.
Smart teams schedule "cupcakes"
Since there are no “pre-season” games, it only makes since to schedule “cupcakes” because the biggest improvements are from game 1 to game 2. Texas will tune up with Rice and Wyoming and be ready for UCLA. It doesn’t make since in today’s college football to schedule potential good teams as your first game because anything can happen. Every school has a “cupcake” or two on their schedule, so why Texas seems to get more flack for beating “cupcakes,” it doesn’t make sense to me. Ask Ol’ Miss and their “cupcake” in Jacksonville State.
There’s not one top 25 team that don’t have “cupcakes” in non conference. 1 loss means to much in college football. It’s good to have atleast 1 good opponent in non-conference (UCLA for Texas this year).

UNT vs Rice
Rice would have destroyed UNT

The least of my worries are now my fears!...
I was at the game yesterday and I witnessed something I did not even think would be a problem this year… the lack of the O-line to blow these “cupcakes” into the second tier. Between moments of great defensive play I saw reason for concern with the offense. I hope it is ring rust…. they had no rhythm what so ever. The first half had the looks of the last time Rice won… scary.
The defense saved the day yesterday. GG seemed to have a problem finding the middle of the field where the tightends were being released and were wide open or the slots running to the middle on skinnies with 1 on 1 coverage.
GG has all the tools to move the team through the air, I just hope he can step up and claim the team as its leader. He definitely has some big shoes to fill it just might take a little longer than I expected. What he did in the NCG was pretty amazing all things considered.
Congrats to all the Horns who gave it their best! Thanks for a tense 1st half, now blow Wyoming out of DKR next weekend!
Hook’em!!!
Differance in Cupcakes
There is nothing wrong with a cupcake team from MAC, Sun Belt etc, but when you get Southland or Ivy cupcakes it does come off bad. I
