running game / general observation opinions
I was at the game yesterday and wanted to ask the fandom these questions:
1. What level of concern does anyone have about the o-line after getting denied after a 1st and G from the 4? Seriously, that was not only weak running and blocking but just horrific play calling. 4th down should have been another straight ahead run (yes I know the first three were not great, but switch out Cody). Any complete moron of the game knows not to try a run wide with that lardass (remember melton at ohio state in 05).
For the love of everything sacred if we can't gain 4 inches against rice than this o-line and backs are a weak group of players and we are in for a very long season.
2. The long pass at the end of the 1st half - d backs should still be running laps for that gaffe (and the dropped pick sixes (2)). Never say a replay - where was any help on that second receiver?
3. I guess we were holding all of our cards close to the vest and we will certainly pull out the magic offense next week, or vs tech, or ucla, or ou, or nebrasksa, or whenver that comment needs to fit. Thoughts?
I feel much less confident in the offense than I thought I would after yesterday. I can assure you any team with a pulse of defense will be able to keep us at or under 21-24 a game - someone please name a threat that will actually scare another team's defense? Maybe Goodwin or Monroe - but can or will we actually get them the ball.
I also think our D will be very good, but our d-backs are way overrated. C. Brown is just not that good, i hope he improves, but ugh.

I Share Your Concern Big Time
If we struggle against Rice = stoned against NU, OU and = struggles vs. TT, OSU, KSU. What really concerns me is where does GD go from here? Does he stay the course? No matter what? Or do we go Air Gilbert? My personal guess is we end up without any identity and tried to ride the defense to success. Just the first game though, so trying hard not to panic.
The sweep to CoJo was like an Old Miller Lite Commercial – Terrible Call no Terrible Execution.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
I am a little worried
Our running game made me want to throw up. Johnson just doesent have the speed to be an everydown back. It is awesome that he worked hard and lost wieght but he is just too slow. Newton is a good back but goes down very easily. Greg Davis did terrible job play calling that game. I can only hope GD will do better, but I wanted that all last year as well, and pretty much hated his play calling all year. I want to share the confidence in GD that people post on here, but I just cannot get there. I dont know why our backs cant perform( over rated?, Applewhite can coach?) but I really hope it get figured out before Tech because I cannont stand another loss to Tech( I live in Lubbock).

After re-watching the game - a couple observations and a couple questions
CJ did everything asked of him in the 1st half with the exception of scoring on that first goal line situation.
- He had 7.2 ypc until that goal line failure
- On goal line, 1st down for positive yardage, 2nd down another 3+ up to the 1 yard line
- If he would have elevated on 3rd down he would have scored – he ran right into his blockers who did not get a good push
- 4th down play call was a bad call, that is on GD
After that CJ had a few three yard gains a 6 yard gain and a little swing pass for little yardage, but after half-time, CJ is MIA for the most part – why?
I think he runs for about 100 yards if he stays in the game, assuming he was healthy. After looking at the blocking on Tre Newtons scores, I believe Cody would have scored on at least two of the three. The one where Tre snuck in behind Snow was a great read on his blockers and Tre does this better than Cody, but chances are we score on the next play with CJ or maybe CJ just runs them over and scores anyway. All-in-all CJ did pretty well.
The question is why didn’t the coaches stick with him:
1. Coaches were pissed with the CJ after not scoring on that first drive?
2. Was injured in early 3rd quarter – minor cramp or sprain?
3. Was too fatigued to continue?
4. Saving him for next week – avoid injury. Let’s see if he remains the starter.
5. Give Newton and Whitaker some time – see who will be the #2 RB
I hate running back by committee – is that what we will see this year?
Yeah, on my second viewing, I felt better about the runs too
Mack said that Cody looked fatigued after the first quarter, that they’ve been running him harder than Fozzy/Tre in practice.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens against Wyoming
I think everyone is freaking out over nothing. Hello it was the first game of the season with a new offense for the first time in years and Gilbert is just a sophmore. The offense will get going but honestly relax people seriously. Deffense was fine after the adjustments on those zone reads that were getting us for a few plays. Did a great job of keeping McGuffie from being a factor. Cody looked great on the opening drive maybe he was a dinged up. The toss play was a bad call with Cody in there. But really no need to be worrying after the opener with young guys and a brand new offense. Have some faith and be supportive
