need help with Chykie issues
I'm wondering how this guy 1) gets a scholarship to Texas? 2) sees the field? 3) sees the field as a starter? and 4) remains a starter after his play on the field?
I'm asking the BON readers an honest question. While I have been watching Texas since birth I cant claim to be able to analyze players like some of you on this site. Chykie is going to send me to the hospital with facepalm injuries and I just cant understand why he is a starter. Does he have some insane NFL potential I'm missing? Has he simply made a couple obvious mistakes and is a solid player otherwise? Am I insane and he is actually a good player? WTF is going on because Chykie continued presence on the field is making me question my reality.

I've always been under the impression that
Chykie has all of the physical skills needed, however he lacks focus at times and will give up big plays. He’s a somewhat bigger corner (listed at 6’0 194) which I think Muschamp likes, but there’s no excusing his lack of focus. It’s like he has the body of a senior but the football IQ of a freshman
Yeah, I think the problem is mental
The real issue is that team’s are starting to notice this and they’re picking on him… and making points off it.
overreaction
watch all of his plays, not just the bad ones. Chykie may not be our best corner, but he’s no scrub

Totally agree.
He’s had a great career already and he’s still got his senior year left.
Teehee.
“facepalm injuries.” I haven’t seen that at my hospital. Did see a guy’s hand stuck in his abdomen though. That was really odd.
Chykie Brown lost his uncle right before the Rice game and Mac said that might have effected how he played. He also said they have six defensive backs who can play at anytime and they will rotate them to keep them fresh.
Take a step back from the keyboard and remember these are kids.

hmm
im sorry to hear chykie lost his uncle recently. i didnt know that and i hope chykie is doing ok in his personal life. things like that put football into perspective and i dont want to give the impression that im going to therapy over chykies play at cornerback. that said, my issues with chykie go way back before the rice game. the rice game was just further evidence to me that he has either mental or physical issues playing football at the college level. also in my opinion, the guys on the football team and college students in general are not “kids” in my book (nor in the eyes of the law, nor in the voters booth, nor to their professors, nor to the actual kid fans that look up to them etc etc etc). saying theyre just “kids” or “college kids” is a tired excuse that straw mans the issue. indeed, chykie is not in the nfl earning a living as a professional but that doesnt mean he should get a free pass from reasonable questioning and criticism. longhorn football players are young adults that are given college scholarships to play for an elite research university and elite football program. accordingly, they are expected to perform at a certain level. chykie dropping interceptions my little sister could catch with one hand and getting burned deep on a semi regular basis does not seem up to par to me.
Dude, get a grip.
chykie dropping interceptions my little sister could catch with one hand …
Stop & listen to yourself. I doubt that your little sister nor yourself could be half the athlete Chykie is.
haha
gotta admit im confused about this comment. either you have never seen exaggeration / sarcasm used for dramatic effect (which in this case was done about as obviously as possible). or you were trying to make a subtle joke. if its the first case, then consider my mind blow for your missing my sarcasm. if its the second, well then ill have to start giving people on the interwebs more credit.
if you want to be literal though, you are right, my sister and myself are indeed slower, weaker, less coordinated and possess less hops that chykie. this is exactly what makes his play all the more upsetting, he has all the physcial tools and it never seems to reach the field.
All in good fun! Yes, I can recognize an exaggeration ...
… but I just think you’re being a bit negative & extreme in your criticism of little Chykie.
A few things I want to point out when talking about these players (& Chykie):
1. Most of ‘em feel much worse than us sorry fans when they get burned or drop an easy pick-6.
2. They are making their very best effort at performing well. If Chykie’s desire & work ethic were ever in question, I guarantee you Mack, Musch, & Akina would never have him out on an island.
3. He’s one of the very best CBs in the country. Every other team would love to have him and there may very well be only 5 or 6 other secondaries in the nation that he wouldn’t be starting in.
4. They’re amateurs and you should expect them to make occasional mistakes.
It’s okay to be frustrated by consistency breakdowns and performance issues but atleast acknowledge that he is the best option at CB for the Horns right now and his play will merit All-American discussion and high draft position by the end of the year. It’s a long season, man. Have faith in him!
Oh yeah, stop hitting yourself in the face – it’s embarrassing!
good points
agreed that chykie’s work ethic would must be legit to have survived boom’s watchful eye. i should probably recognize that we just dont have any better options and get over it. i certainly hope you are right that his play eventually lands him in all america discussion. if that happens we certainly would have one of the best college secondaries in recent memory. also, im gonna do my best to cease the excessive face palming.
Ha Ha. It's all good.
Just seems like Chykie’s gonna do something special this year – if he can hang onto the pick-6s! With Aaron & Curtis on the other side, he’ll get plenty of opportunities. Hook ’em, Baby!
Muschamp obviously has reservations about playing AJ at starting CB and Nickel, probably just due to the wear on him over the season.
If there were a better third CB, Chykie would probably see less time on the field. He is very talented, but just manage to fail once a game in a spectacular way. I’ll take him and his flaws over whatever greener backups we have in the program.

I agree Chykie can be inconsistent, but...
…it’s the first game of the year
…Rice game in with a different offense that expected
…no CB is perfect 100% of the time
…he has the physical tools to overcome his mental lapses by closing quickly and getting back into plays
…not grabbing a pick 6 is painful, but giving up 6 is worse
…we could always have someone 5’ 7" with no tackling ability (cough Beasley) back there
…most importantly, Muschamp put him out there, and in Boom We Trust
Hook ’Em!
Chykie is good
but his few mistakes often overshadow his above average to good play at the position. Same thing with Malcolm. He catches most of the balls that come his way. However, it is his drops that are simple catches that overshadow his great ones occasionally.

I about knocked myself unconscious in the Rice game because of Chykie

I was waiting for you to chime in on this...
Chykie has his moments. I think his major problem is that he tends to look into the back field too much, which results in him getting beat. Is he our best corner..no, but honestly I don’t know of another that could take his spot right now and be effective.
