This raises an interesting question
Obviously one roots for Virginia Tech if rooting with Texas-centric interests at heart.
If we were entering a season in which we expected no more than a 6-6 campaign from Texas, far from the lights of the national championship chase, would you (not just BMC237, but all of you inclined to root against BSU given the implications) be more likely to root for BSU, not just tonight but throughout the season?
Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!
Not necessarily.
In this case, Boise State is ahead of Texas with a probable Championship berth pending a victory tonight. It is indeed possible Va Tech could pass Texas with a win. However, Va Tech is more likely to lose later in the season, Boise is not. The argument that BSU doesn’t deserve a title shot is not the one I’m making. I’ll root against any team ahead of Texas that could secure a title spot that is not ours.

Another reason for the polls to remain unpublished....
until after the first week of conference play. But, that will never happen…too much money involved hyping “#3 vs. #10” and a potential BCS buster. Whatever.

Guess I kinda strayed from your question..
If Texas was out of the race, then yah, just maybe I’d root for the underdog. Naturally this mindset is not present when Texas IS in the hunt. Somewhat hypocritical thinking, sure, but whatever it takes for my Horns.

Nah I hate Boise State that bad
Although I'm not a Jets fan, and most certainly not a USC fan, I'll root for any team that Mark Sanchez plays for. Mark Sanchez for Superbowl MVP and President 2012. The change that only I can believe in.
so bad even,
That the only way I’d root for them is if they were facing the Land-Thieves.

Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you soon enough. If he's not, don't embarrass him.
Virginia Tech for me
I think they come out and punish Boise St. with their running game. Virginia Tech players are tired of being the “other” team in this game. Final Score: VT 35 Boise St. 21

I can root for Boise on the road, but until they do something about that eyesore, I will be hard pressed to watch them at home, much less root for them. Why would they do this?

Do you REALLY like them...based on what???
They get all off-season to prepare for Va Tech…and if they win this one game…they will get 5 weeks to prepare for their BCS bowl game. In the interim, they play Oregon State and then it is squadoosh…I mean NOBDOY!
Mon, Sep 06 Virginia Tech at Fed Ex Field

BSU has done all they can do
to make their team legitimate in the last ten years. Scheduling the biggest named teams that will agree to play them (whether at home or away), going undefeated in numerous seasons, and now making the switch from the WAC to MWC. How can y’all root against the Broncs after the ‘07 Fiesta Bowl? I hate VT. Any school that recruits 2 Vicks doesn’t deserve my support. Go Boise. Broncos win 45-21
put another way...
If UT had their schedule minus VaTech and Or. St. and those two games were replaced with OU and NU, would you consider UT a lock for the MNC were they to be unbeaten?

Va Tech
Will run Boise outta da house.
VT has a stable of runners that will gash Bopise all night. They will controll the clock wear down Boise’s D and win the 4th quarter.
VT’s QB can run and is a passable passer. He will give the D nightmares with his roll out passes.
Needless to say I pick the Hokies. This hurts me because I love the town of Boise and the people there. They let us get on KW’s bus.
Hate?
It is impossible for me to hate the BSU program – everything in me pulls for the underdog in life! What I hate instead is the flawed BCS system and allowing this to happen. However, we have to live with the BCS system and because of this, I will be a VT fan for this night.
I agree completely with the blue smurf turf issue as it is hard to take them seriously with that field.
I'm taking Boise State...
…by 7, good luck!

Anyone seeing this Navy-Maryland finish
I could swear that most of my life if a team were on the one yard-line, there was a helpless feeling of dead and desperation for the team playing defense, a score seemed inevitable. Once in a blue moon a team would actually hold, and they were celebrated for days afterward. Now it seems to happen at least once a game, in fact, I’m more surprised if anyone can score from the 1 ydln. I’m utterly unimpressed by goaline stands at this point.
Just saw it
Really wanted Navy to get that one. They played with a lot of heart despite all the red zone nightmares.
I'll take Beamer Ball in an ugly win
If there’s a team out there built to neutralize Boise States advantages (excellent offensive coaching, the element of surprise, and a massive chip on their shoulders), it’s Va. Tech. I’m not sure how well Boise will do against a sound, bend but don’t break defense that can cover and rush the passer – they didn’t look terribly good against TCU in their last outing.
proud to swim home
Record versus BCS conference teams
ESPN just pointed out that over the past 4 seasons Boise St. is an impressive 4-1 record versus BCS member teams.
A lot fewer than UT’s 8 losses to similar teams during that span. Then again, Texas has 31 wins to those 8 losses.
Texas is also 14-0 against non-BCS member teams over the past 4 years. Boise St. is 45-3 against similar opponents.
Uh oh
Looks like Va Tech is wearing some new black uniforms. If I recall correctly, teams are something like 0-78 when they do this. Bet the house on it, Boise’s winning this game.
Both teams are wearing new Nike "pro combat" unis. A lot of awful looking uniforms will be gracing your TV set in 2010.
Unis...
man, those black helmets look nice, I am trying to imagine a black helmet with a burnt orange longhorn on the side, that would look intimidating, in my opinion.
Would you like PJ Tucker, Boobie Gibson, and LaMarcus Aldridge to suit up for us?
Maybe we could schedule Duke?
If Boise wins
we should root for Va Tech to end up having a mediocre season, which would dilute this win.
If Va Tech wins, they would have the best non-conf win of the season, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pass us up at some point

Before the game, I said these words:
“Please don’t suck, Tyrod Taylor.”
And he proceeds to miss on a flea flicker and fumble a snap. Great start.

thinking exacltly the same thing
that pass was terrible, had to remind myself that it was made by a quarterback, not a back or receiver.
Dear, Nike
Please Stop.
Dear Boise,
Just when you were finally establishing an identity, why would you make yourself unrecognizable?
Oh wow,
A Placekicker who can only kick from the right side… great potential there.
Although I'm not a Jets fan, and most certainly not a USC fan, I'll root for any team that Mark Sanchez plays for. Mark Sanchez for Superbowl MVP and President 2012. The change that only I can believe in.
Murphy's Law for VT so far
Gotta be the black uniforms. Always a bad idea.
When will teams learn?
Seriously, I don’t think a team has ever won in black uni’s. Literally. If it’s happened, I’ve never seen it.
I want to say it goes beyond even these big games
Didn’t Georgia or somebody open against a relative cupcake a couple of years ago wearing black uni’s and get completely destroyed?
punt blocked
question, I guess rule book for a blocked punt is different from a non-blocked one?
Once the punt is touched (blocked) by the Boise St. player, doesn’t it become a live ball where either team can recover it?
by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:22 PM CDT reply actions
Absolutely worst way for V-tech to start this game
Complete self-destruction in the first 6 minutes. I feel genuinely bad for their defense as their offense and special teams can’t get their heads out of their rear ends.

i could be wrong, but
it looks to me more like VT is bad than BSU is good. Their O-Line isnt looking so hot either yet.
Could be
and if V-Tech ends up having a bad season, then Boise’s great early win doesn’t mean much, and the BCS computers will reflect that
by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:26 PM CDT up reply actions
You still have to convert in the redzone
something we had trouble doing against Rice early
by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:27 PM CDT up reply actions
Different situation
Rice’s safeties played a good game, and were determined to play the pass all day
Didn't we...
Boise State was in Austin this past summer, am I correct? Seems like we would have learned that nice play action at the goal line that they scored with.
I was thinking that we saw that exact package at the UT game.
However, I think Rice has better safeties than VT.
And this is why most powerhouse schools won't schedule Boise
IT’S A TRAP!
by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:28 PM CDT reply actions
It's similar to the Appalachia State - Michigan phenomenon
Va. Tech has to prepare for an entire schedule, whereas Boise can more specifically concentrate on one team.
proud to swim home
I agree
Most teams try to schedule a week off before a huge game, Boise had an entire off season to plan for this one
by future_longhorn_dad on Sep 6, 2010 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions
This is not right
VT knew going into this season they were hosting a top 10 team in their opener. No excuses for them.
But VT has to devote time in the offseason
to playing Miami, Florida St., etc., which means installing certain packages and training the defense to react to different trends. BSU needs only to prep for VT.
Screw that.
You’re hosting a top 10 team to start the season. You don’t pay attention to anything else.
You suggest ignoring the other four top 25 teams on the schedule that will determine the ACC champ?
proud to swim home
Right, spend 5 months preparing for the game that won't necessarily impact your job security
And one week on those that will.
proud to swim home
If you don't prep your team during the offseason
on how to defend and attack FSU, Miami, Boston College, North Carolina, etc., you can’t expect to compete in the ACC. BSU will do fine in their conference no matter what they do.
You're right
UCLA and K-State shouldn’t really have prepped for eachother either, since it doesn’t affect their conference records.
Boise also doesn’t have any other opponents.
VT is getting beat from bad game planning.
VT prepared for BSU
but they ALSO prepared for several other teams. BSU would have been fine just to have prepared for only VT.
Right
the typical argument against non AQ teams involves the lack of prestige, or accomplishment, in their schedules. But the bigger issue is logistical. They have more prep time, suffer fewer injuries, are less exhausted, and certainly less mentally exhausted, than a team like Florida. If talent is equal at the start of the season, then the circumstances of the season give Boise a competitive advantage.
I know it's mostly coaches' talk
but how many times do you see coaches say, our job is to prepare for (insert first team they’re playing).
Even Mack would say we’re focusing on preparing for Rice. It’s really one game at a time.

Anybody catch that "superman" jump the Terps player had on the Navy QB?
that was ridiculous. Just like, BAM, instant.
I read somewhere that said VaTech has always been perceived a hardworking, blue collar, but STUPID team. Seems right.
Somehow they always seem to beat the teams I don't want them to beat
but they always play terribly when I need them to win
Seems like they always start the season with huge hype
and then lose and early game and finish somewhere outside of top 15.

I think the multitude of formations are indicative of a veteran team and QB who has multiple years in that system. I think this team will get there eventually this year, and I like how BS changes the formations and does not allow the D to get complacent, they force them to think on every play, which we all know is bad

(1) I’m glad to know playing all those bowl projection games will be made so much easier by having one team in place after Week One.
(2) I’m glad to see that the narrative above is that it has to be because VT sucks. It can’t possibly be because BSU is good.
(3) Fuck Nike. Royally.

I don't think BSU sucks
I’d be inclined to say that year in and year out they’re between Oregon and Georgia under Mark Richt level, with no competition. A fine team no doubt, but not top 5 material in any BCS conference.

Alright VaTech
you just completely screwed ALL OF US over for the entire season. This narrative is going to be insufferable.
I guess
But it’s worse for them, having to hear that they’re automatically not good enough because they’re a small school team.
We get it easy most of the time.
You ain't hurt...
No, VT screwed over everyone in college football
Even if BSU is good, VT’s mistakes are skewing the perception. And yes, this season may now become intolerable.

But my respect for Beamer as a coach just dropped. It is absolutely stunning how many fantastically dumb mental mistakes V-tech just committed in one quarter, and it’s the FIRST game of the season.

So via Brent’s logic, VaTech shouldn’t drop much. Heck, they’re already ranked lower anyway.
Defense
First, these guys do not look undersized, Second, their motors seem to continually be on overdrive, adrenaline maybe?
Endorphins and Creatine?

Although I'm not a Jets fan, and most certainly not a USC fan, I'll root for any team that Mark Sanchez plays for. Mark Sanchez for Superbowl MVP and President 2012. The change that only I can believe in.
This is nothing new
I remember VaTech getting slimed by LSU a couple years back in week 1’s marquee game.
V Tech will come back. They just need 1 big play and the game changer so far was really that bone head penatly on the punt
no chance
They will have to go outside the game plan and rely on Taylor’s arm. Never a viable strategy.
Ole Miss probably thought that too
There are 3 quarters left. Plenty of time to take their heads out of their asses.
Aren't there three quarters left in the game?
Just got here.
Old story…first game, look really stupid early…suddenly they get it…game changes.
Of course, Boise could be SuperTeam and Tech is gonna eat more shit than ever.
V-tech still has a shot
But that was a very, very bad start. Gotta give some credit to Boise, though. They got gifts, but any good team will take advantage of gifts.

Boise State has much more to gain.
But VTech has much more to lose.
VT does have a history of bombing against ranked teams early
In the defense of the Boise isn’t that good argument
Va Tech

Hawkins was the puppet, Peterson the puppet master...
Ouch to the Buffs fans out there. Should have hired the OC.

Its bad for college football for so many reasons if Boise wins out this season
I think a lot of people are sensing what’s coming
It's only bad
if it’s between boise state and a team from a major conference that’s also undefeated. Have you seen the rest of their schedule? Has VT shown anything to indicate that they’re a top-10 team so far?

But if not
then I don’t have a problem with it at all.
Maybe I'll do a Fanpost
but in short, Boise has so many logistical advantages that it 1) puts a system of incentives in place that could restructure college football’s strategies, and 2) it could redefine the standards of a sport that I believe is the only one left in our culture that has any real standards.

I don't know why..
but elitism runs stronger in football
well
before tonight I was with the Boise only has to rise up for one game. The way they swarm to the football and how smooth their offense is ran, I think I believe they belong on the field with Alabama or whoever represents the other half of the bcs championship (if they get there.)
Yes, they play well. That's all it takes.
The axiom is: if you can execute the offense, you can’t be stopped.
But Alabama will have to keep up this intensity for 3 months
which is exhausting. Can Boise do this week in and week out and still be fresh in the National Title game? Because that is what Bama will have to have done when they face Boise.
Fair point...
….but this would be a case in which that month-long layoff before the championship game would be beneficial to Bama.
Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!
Why is elitism worse than cheering for an underdog?
What gives an underdog a moral high-ground. Typically, elite athletes or programs are those that are most dedicated and disciplined, which is why they’ve become elite. It sickens me when the public celebrates their downfalls for some nebulous, emotional attachment to the little guy.
Does anyone else just hate Kellen Moore's face?
