College football's opening weekend draws to a close tonight with the most anticipated game of the weekend, as Boise State travels to FedEx field in Landover, MD to battle Virginia Tech. Do you have BoiseStateAPhobia?

Boise State coverage: One Bronco Nation Under God

Virginia Tech coverage: Gobbler Country

Kick Off: 7:00 p.m. CT

I predicted a Boise State win last week on EDSBS LIVE. Who do you like tonight?

Happy Labor Day, and I hope your football weekend's been as great as mine. The action on the field has been absolutely brilliant. What a weekend...

This raises an interesting question

Obviously one roots for Virginia Tech if rooting with Texas-centric interests at heart.

If we were entering a season in which we expected no more than a 6-6 campaign from Texas, far from the lights of the national championship chase, would you (not just BMC237, but all of you inclined to root against BSU given the implications) be more likely to root for BSU, not just tonight but throughout the season?

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 5:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily.

In this case, Boise State is ahead of Texas with a probable Championship berth pending a victory tonight. It is indeed possible Va Tech could pass Texas with a win. However, Va Tech is more likely to lose later in the season, Boise is not. The argument that BSU doesn’t deserve a title shot is not the one I’m making. I’ll root against any team ahead of Texas that could secure a title spot that is not ours.

Another reason for the polls to remain unpublished....

until after the first week of conference play. But, that will never happen…too much money involved hyping “#3 vs. #10” and a potential BCS buster. Whatever.

Guess I kinda strayed from your question..

If Texas was out of the race, then yah, just maybe I’d root for the underdog. Naturally this mindset is not present when Texas IS in the hunt. Somewhat hypocritical thinking, sure, but whatever it takes for my Horns.

Virginia Tech for me

I think they come out and punish Boise St. with their running game. Virginia Tech players are tired of being the “other” team in this game. Final Score: VT 35 Boise St. 21

They get all off-season to prepare for Va Tech…and if they win this one game…they will get 5 weeks to prepare for their BCS bowl game. In the interim, they play Oregon State and then it is squadoosh…I mean NOBDOY!

BSU has done all they can do

to make their team legitimate in the last ten years. Scheduling the biggest named teams that will agree to play them (whether at home or away), going undefeated in numerous seasons, and now making the switch from the WAC to MWC. How can y’all root against the Broncs after the ‘07 Fiesta Bowl? I hate VT. Any school that recruits 2 Vicks doesn’t deserve my support. Go Boise. Broncos win 45-21

put another way...

If UT had their schedule minus VaTech and Or. St. and those two games were replaced with OU and NU, would you consider UT a lock for the MNC were they to be unbeaten?

Va Tech

Will run Boise outta da house.

VT has a stable of runners that will gash Bopise all night. They will controll the clock wear down Boise’s D and win the 4th quarter.

VT’s QB can run and is a passable passer. He will give the D nightmares with his roll out passes.

Needless to say I pick the Hokies. This hurts me because I love the town of Boise and the people there. They let us get on KW’s bus.

Hate?

It is impossible for me to hate the BSU program – everything in me pulls for the underdog in life! What I hate instead is the flawed BCS system and allowing this to happen. However, we have to live with the BCS system and because of this, I will be a VT fan for this night.

I agree completely with the blue smurf turf issue as it is hard to take them seriously with that field.

Anyone seeing this Navy-Maryland finish

I could swear that most of my life if a team were on the one yard-line, there was a helpless feeling of dead and desperation for the team playing defense, a score seemed inevitable. Once in a blue moon a team would actually hold, and they were celebrated for days afterward. Now it seems to happen at least once a game, in fact, I’m more surprised if anyone can score from the 1 ydln. I’m utterly unimpressed by goaline stands at this point.

I'll take Beamer Ball in an ugly win

If there’s a team out there built to neutralize Boise States advantages (excellent offensive coaching, the element of surprise, and a massive chip on their shoulders), it’s Va. Tech. I’m not sure how well Boise will do against a sound, bend but don’t break defense that can cover and rush the passer – they didn’t look terribly good against TCU in their last outing.

But yes, beamer’s D doesn’t tend to give up yards or points. Tonight, though, I suspect they will give up more yards than they will during ACC play.

Record versus BCS conference teams

ESPN just pointed out that over the past 4 seasons Boise St. is an impressive 4-1 record versus BCS member teams.

A lot fewer than UT’s 8 losses to similar teams during that span. Then again, Texas has 31 wins to those 8 losses.

Texas is also 14-0 against non-BCS member teams over the past 4 years. Boise St. is 45-3 against similar opponents.

by Lincoln on Sep 6, 2010 6:37 PM CDT reply actions

Uh oh

Looks like Va Tech is wearing some new black uniforms. If I recall correctly, teams are something like 0-78 when they do this. Bet the house on it, Boise’s winning this game.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 6:49 PM CDT reply actions

If Boise wins

we should root for Va Tech to end up having a mediocre season, which would dilute this win.

If Va Tech wins, they would have the best non-conf win of the season, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they pass us up at some point

punt blocked

question, I guess rule book for a blocked punt is different from a non-blocked one?

Once the punt is touched (blocked) by the Boise St. player, doesn’t it become a live ball where either team can recover it?

by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:22 PM CDT reply actions

Yes

But, unless the Boise player picks it up and gains possession then Va Tech would have to recover and move it past the first down, otherwise it’s a turnover on downs.

Absolutely worst way for V-tech to start this game

It's similar to the Appalachia State - Michigan phenomenon

Va. Tech has to prepare for an entire schedule, whereas Boise can more specifically concentrate on one team.

proud to swim home

by learned hand on Sep 6, 2010 7:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

Most teams try to schedule a week off before a huge game, Boise had an entire off season to plan for this one

by future_longhorn_dad on Sep 6, 2010 7:31 PM CDT up reply actions

This is not right

VT knew going into this season they were hosting a top 10 team in their opener. No excuses for them.

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 7:32 PM CDT up reply actions

But VT has to devote time in the offseason

to playing Miami, Florida St., etc., which means installing certain packages and training the defense to react to different trends. BSU needs only to prep for VT.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Screw that.

You’re hosting a top 10 team to start the season. You don’t pay attention to anything else.

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 7:36 PM CDT up reply actions

If you don't prep your team during the offseason

on how to defend and attack FSU, Miami, Boston College, North Carolina, etc., you can’t expect to compete in the ACC. BSU will do fine in their conference no matter what they do.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 7:47 PM CDT up reply actions

You're right

UCLA and K-State shouldn’t really have prepped for eachother either, since it doesn’t affect their conference records.

Boise also doesn’t have any other opponents.

VT is getting beat from bad game planning.

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 7:52 PM CDT up reply actions

VT prepared for BSU

but they ALSO prepared for several other teams. BSU would have been fine just to have prepared for only VT.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 7:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Right

the typical argument against non AQ teams involves the lack of prestige, or accomplishment, in their schedules. But the bigger issue is logistical. They have more prep time, suffer fewer injuries, are less exhausted, and certainly less mentally exhausted, than a team like Florida. If talent is equal at the start of the season, then the circumstances of the season give Boise a competitive advantage.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 7:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I know it's mostly coaches' talk

but how many times do you see coaches say, our job is to prepare for (insert first team they’re playing).

Even Mack would say we’re focusing on preparing for Rice. It’s really one game at a time.

by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions

OK. This drive will be telling. If Va Tech gets them to punt in less than 6 plays, and they can get their O-line to settle down I’m not worried.

I think the multitude of formations are indicative of a veteran team and QB who has multiple years in that system. by Dirty Work on Sep 6, 2010 8:03 PM CDT up reply actions

I really love...

…all of the conspiracy talk on here. ESPN loves Boise! Refs love Boise! Everyone loves Boise!

have I stumbled into a Bizarro World version of TexasAgs.com?

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

Boise's great no doubt,

But all the knob slobbering addressed DIRECTLY at the coaches is a bit much. It’s not a “conspiracy,” it’s just annoying.

by fitzhume on Sep 6, 2010 8:06 PM CDT up reply actions

It's only bad

if it’s between boise state and a team from a major conference that’s also undefeated. Have you seen the rest of their schedule? Has VT shown anything to indicate that they’re a top-10 team so far?

by fitzhume on Sep 6, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Has VT shown anything to indicate that they’re a top-10 team so far?

Maybe that’s how you look when being handled by one of the top teams in the country, regardless of how difficult the remaining schedule isn’t?

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

well, without a real playoff it's impossible to know

History tells me that VT is usually disappointing, and there’s nothing here to speak against that despite the fact that BSU obviously has it’s stuff together.

by fitzhume on Sep 6, 2010 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

But if not

then I don’t have a problem with it at all.

by fitzhume on Sep 6, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Maybe I'll do a Fanpost

but in short, Boise has so many logistical advantages that it 1) puts a system of incentives in place that could restructure college football’s strategies, and 2) it could redefine the standards of a sport that I believe is the only one left in our culture that has any real standards.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:13 PM CDT up reply actions

Please do

It’s an argument we’ll be having all season, and it will be good to have intelligent pros and cons out there.

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:22 PM CDT up reply actions

So you disagree with the conspiracy talk?

You really don’t think ESPN wouldn’t pursue this potential storyline? They are all about capitalizing on controversy and magnifying it.

by goingforthecorner on Sep 6, 2010 8:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Haha

These special teams mistakes are pretty funny.

by TheElusiveShadow on Sep 6, 2010 8:07 PM CDT reply actions

Raise your hands...

…if you were rooting against Butler in the NCAAs because it was bad for college basketball to see a team from a lesser conference play for it all?

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:09 PM CDT reply actions

I just hate the NCAA tournament in general

that Butler survived until the end is indicative of why.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:10 PM CDT up reply actions

Now that's not fair

Duke was in the final. Does it matter who they were playing?

by TheElusiveShadow on Sep 6, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know why..

but elitism runs stronger in football

by Houstonhorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:11 PM CDT up reply actions

Ding ding ding!

We have a winner!

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:12 PM CDT up reply actions

well

before tonight I was with the Boise only has to rise up for one game. The way they swarm to the football and how smooth their offense is ran, I think I believe they belong on the field with Alabama or whoever represents the other half of the bcs championship (if they get there.)

by Houstonhorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, they play well. That's all it takes.

The axiom is: if you can execute the offense, you can’t be stopped.

by whills on Sep 6, 2010 8:15 PM CDT up reply actions

But Alabama will have to keep up this intensity for 3 months

which is exhausting. Can Boise do this week in and week out and still be fresh in the National Title game? Because that is what Bama will have to have done when they face Boise.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair point...

….but this would be a case in which that month-long layoff before the championship game would be beneficial to Bama.

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:23 PM CDT up reply actions

Why is elitism worse than cheering for an underdog?

What gives an underdog a moral high-ground. Typically, elite athletes or programs are those that are most dedicated and disciplined, which is why they’ve become elite. It sickens me when the public celebrates their downfalls for some nebulous, emotional attachment to the little guy.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Does anyone else just hate Kellen Moore's face?

Jeeze I want to punch him every time there’s a close up

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

guess

the left side works after all

by juarez1729 on Sep 6, 2010 8:10 PM CDT reply actions

VT looking pretty solid

I like what I see, we may have a game!

Hook 'em

by blazzinken on Sep 6, 2010 8:17 PM CDT reply actions

possibly

Tyrod Taylor is clearly the best dual-threat QB in the ACC Coastal.

by fitzhume on Sep 6, 2010 8:17 PM CDT up reply actions

God i hoe va tech comes back

so I dont have to hear anymore about why boise belongs in the title game

by JBHOOKEM22 on Sep 6, 2010 8:17 PM CDT reply actions

This is certainly...

…the entertaining game we needed after a pretty dreary Saturday.

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:29 PM CDT reply actions

well

anytime you get a 97 yd bomb and almost come back from 20 down by throwing a pass from the 5 in a end zone then I think it’s pretty entertaining. Also with playing a 2nd string d helps too in the dramatic comeback department

by Houstonhorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

the 4th q

of LSU/UNC was pretty good. (I know not whole game). And don’t forget about Utah State playing for the tie at OU.

by Houstonhorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:30 PM CDT up reply actions

This Saturday is going to be tough

3 games at 3:30pm and 3 in primetime I want to watch. Haven’t been that many great games in one day since New Year’s Day when I was a kid.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:32 PM CDT up reply actions

Funny to hear...

…Musburger refer to VT as “the establishment” when VT itself is a very new member of that group.

Hungry Hippos, baby! It's on!

by Hopkins Horn on Sep 6, 2010 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Yep

VT did what Boise is trying to do. But that;s part of my argument. VT paid its dues and got itself into a big-time conference (save your ACC jokes)

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 6, 2010 8:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Did you know...

there is a conference where if you beat the Idaho Vandals, San Jose State Spartans, and two teams named “Aggies”, you could be 4-0 in conference play?

(I didn’t even know the U.S. had approved San Jose as our 51st state.)

by Lincoln on Sep 6, 2010 8:30 PM CDT reply actions

Hmmm...

Alabama just opened against SJST… Is it the SEC?

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 8:31 PM CDT up reply actions

Bout time VT woke up

Just stay composed and get some pressure on K. Moore

It Ain't Easy, But It's Worth It.

by DONSLIQ on Sep 6, 2010 8:34 PM CDT reply actions

Them talking about home games...

Did anyone else notice during the Rice game that the crowd was cheering at the wrong time?

It felt like a hostile crowd to me, mostly because they were ignorant and started cheering at GG before the snap. Let the guy make his calls!

by notsofst on Sep 6, 2010 8:35 PM CDT reply actions

Ouch

Lucky that didn’t go backwards. That could have been disastrous for Boise.

by TheElusiveShadow on Sep 6, 2010 8:38 PM CDT reply actions

Boise's secondary is questionable

this is not a top 5 team

if Va Tech doesn’t pull this one out, someone else is going to beat them this season

probably Hawai’i
