Do you like Boise State?

I love Boise State's football team.  They seem to beat every decent, good, or great team they play in recent memory.  And they do it in dramatic fashion.  Not unlike a one Vince Young, I think he played for our team a few years ago.

It is not likely that UT will end up lobbying with Boise for a final spot in the MNC.  By my estimation that would take Boise going undefeated, us going undefeated or with 1 loss, and many other teams faltering...Let us also not forget that it is the MNC we are debating - the mythical national championship.  It can't be that important if it is a mythical entity.

So let us appreciate, not denegrate, Boise's victories as the underdog against the traditional powerhouses.  Especially against programs as despicable as OU and VT (and Oregon - I hate that mascot duck man).  I always say "Hook Em!"  But tonight, I also say "Go Broncs!"  Comments welcome.

Frankly there is nothing that I find wrong with them

I’ll always have a soft spot for them for beating OU in the Fiesta Bowl, and they are clearly well coached (to the point that I find it suspicious that their head coach hasn’t moved on to a better program), and have the talent to compete with anybody.

I just hate the fact that they are now a national championship frontrunner when they play in an abortion of a conference, a sentiment that went from minor annoyance to mind-numbingly excruciating after tonight. The only game remaining on their schedule that will resemble anything similar to what a top-tier college football game should be is OSU, another team that likes to hover in the upper-middle (but never the top) of their FBS conference but will probably lose (in Boise, inexperienced QB, their season is already over after the TCU loss) yet still give BSU more “see we can hang with the big boys!” cred.

The other 10 games? Garbage. Absolute garbage. 10 games worth of garbage. 2 1/2 months of garbage. Free win after free win. No need for depth, no need for consistency, just enough cream at the top to show up the one or two times a year when it matters for them. Remember when they were only up 13 on cal-davis at the half last year? What if they have that game during a genuine conference schedule?

What if Texas played OU, Nebraska, and filled the rest with aa schools and C-usa teams. Think we’d show up for the OU and NU games? If they win out and still don’t make the NCG (and I’ll pray to whatever god is necessary for that to be the case) then they will be a victim of circumstance, because I do believe they have top-tier talent. But that is their situation, and they should enjoy whatever bowl they are told to go to based on their accomplishments, which won’t be many.

I agree with everything you wrote

I hate that Boise may get a nod for an MNC bid. It is ridiculous. I just can’t root for them to lose solely for the hope that it would increase UT’s chances for a MNC bid. It’s not right. They’re a good team, I won’t root against them…unless they do something legitimate to piss me off. That was kind of the point of my post. I want UT to play them.

Why would you want Texas to play them?

it would be like when OU played them in the fiesta bowl

OU had nothing to gain and everything to lose in that game

are you saying

you are rooting for a Texas-BSU NCG, or that you would just, in general, enjoy watching Texas play BSU?

If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!

by circa1015 on Sep 6, 2010 11:52 PM CDT up reply actions

I just don't think

that playing BSU would be a good situation for Texas, regardless of how important the game is. No matter how good the coaching, preparation, gameplanning, etc., the Texas players would walk on the field with a little “it’s just Boise State” tick in their brain, which would result in a horrible start. It happened to every one of these “big game” teams that lost, and Texas would have every reason to be the worst offender (see: 2006 Fiesta Bowl, BSU 21 OU 10). We would all be sitting around hoping that this Texas team would be mentally strong enough to admit that they underestimated their opponent, and they need to shop up, and that this would happen soon enough to recover from whatever hole we would be in. BSU would have an inherent psychological advantage, and college football is all about the intangibles.

2006 OU, 2008 UO, 2009 UO, 2010 VT

Boise lost the 2nd half of all of these games. Fast starts taking advantage of overconfidence, then barely holding on when the other team decides to show up.

good points and valid concerns

I guess I would hope that our team didn’t fall prey to the psychology of playing a “lesser” team

by longhorn_dan on Sep 7, 2010 12:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I don't think it's "little Boise State" anymore

Perhaps as recently as last season, scheduling and beating BSU wouldn’t have earned a traditional power much in the way of respect. I think that has changed, though, and there will be a major amount of respect going to the first big-name school which travels to Boise and beats the Broncos on the blue turf.

"they play in an abortion of a conference"

I laughed and then questioned whether that was right or not. I’ll +1 anyways.

They beat every good team they have played in recent memory

Because they only play 1 or 2 of them every year. Where are all of the awesome boise st players in the NFL? If they played in the SEC or the Big 12-2, they would lose 2-4 games year in and out.

by GoComets! on Sep 6, 2010 11:26 PM CDT reply actions

Well of course I don't have proof of something that is predicted

But just look back 2 years ago.
In a 4 week span, Texas beat #1 OU, beat #11 missouri, beat #8 Okie st and then finally lost to #5 Texas tech. Texas didn’t get to play 1 ranked team and then skate the rest of the freaking year. Hell, we didn’t even get to play in our conference championship game. Give boise state a schedule like that and see how they do. Its easy to look shit hot, and pull out a bunch of trick plays, when you only have to prep for 1-2 games every year.

totally agree. See my reply to circa above.

I can’t not like Boise just because of the stupid BCS circumstances.

by GoComets! on Sep 6, 2010 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not a fan

I hate their atrocious, eye-searing field; the institutional whining victimhood (they hired a PR firm to pretend that the team was willing to play any team in the country, but failed to mention their $1M demanded payment); the whiny fans (protip: not every adverse BCS decision is a conspiracy); most of all, I hate the sense of entitlement (beating Bob Stoops in a BCS game (as though that’s difficult) and one overrated Pac10 or ACC team per season doesn’t justify a national championship bid)

The French haven't the nature for war. Their Gallic laziness combines with their Latinate voluptuousness with the result that they would rather eat and make love with their faces than fight.

by LongCat on Sep 6, 2010 11:29 PM CDT reply actions

I don't.

I don’t like Boise St. because they get to play on a different field than everyone else. It’s not completely there fault, but I guarantee they don’t schedule tonight’s game week 2 or week 3.

I watched them play TCU 2 years ago and get whupped. Score was close, but TCU, who had 2 losses to BCS bowl teams, was clearly better. Last year, TCU should have won, but got cute and failed.

Also, Boise has played exactly 5 big games the past 4 years. OU, TCUx2, Oregon and tonight. I have never seen a team get more unforced errors from their opponents in big games than Boise. Maybe they read the Secret. I don’t know. But they were spotted 10 points tonight due to Va Tech’s idiocy.

CHris Peterson is a GREAT coach. But they have to seriously gameplan 2-3 times a year. Every BCS school can’t think about week 6 until they get through week 5.

Anyway. THey are good kids, great coach (horrible fans — my experience in San Diego after they lost), but there are 10-15 teams in country that beat them the way they played tonight. Va Tech just happened to be that dumb to let this get away from them. Va Tech failed us all.

by A-Tex Devil on Sep 6, 2010 11:30 PM CDT reply actions

good points

I HATED that Boise’s ‘marquee’ game this year was VT, 1st game of the year. VT is always ranked higher than they should be in the beginning of every season.

I wonder why the big teams collapse when they play Boise though? It can’t be coincidence, to happen so often…or could it? Plus I think Boise played Oregon twice (you mentioned them once). Maybe Oregon wasn’t very good one of those years?

by longhorn_dan on Sep 6, 2010 11:38 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sorry, what?

Virginia Tech Pre-Season to Post-Season Ranks (AP/Coaches):

2009: 7/7 to 10/10
2008: 17/15 to 15/14
2007: 9/9 to 9/9
2006: 17/16 to 18/19
2005: 8/7 to 7/7
2004: UR/UR to 10/10

I daresay Virginia Tech’s one of the most consistent teams in the nation. Like Texas, they’ve been good for at least 9/10 wins for quite a white. They’ve gotten a little negative pub because they (1) play in the bipolar ACC, and (2) lost marquee opening games the past 4 years. But at the end of the day, they’re still a damn good football team and are in fact not “always ranked higher than they should be.”

I don't always watch football, but when I do, I prefer Dos Achos. Stay thirsty, my friends.

Too lazy to look up..

…but I think they have the current streak for 10+ win seasons.

by sahyouni on Sep 7, 2010 12:22 PM CDT up reply actions

wow, I did not look that up.

Should’ve said “I think” VT is always….

Not sure why I felt that way. Maybe I’ve seen them lose big games more than I’ve seen them win.

by longhorn_dan on Sep 7, 2010 1:17 PM CDT up reply actions

Virginia Tech always seems to do the opposite of what I want them to do

which is why my selective memory puts them at about .500 in big games. For instance, last season I wanted them to beat Bama and they lost. Then, for some reason, I wanted them to lose to Nebraska, but they won that one in the final minute.

by BrooklynHorn on Sep 7, 2010 4:00 PM CDT up reply actions

last year I really wanted them to lose to miami

and they destroyed them. you may be on to something here…

va tech has not beat a top five team in about 20 years. musberger must have mentioned it over and over.

here is something you should look at, the big east conference. one of their teams beat an fbs opponent. cincy lost to fresno. pitt lost utah. uconn lost to michigan rutgers beat up an fcs opponent syracuse beat akron. that was their big victory. the MWC beat three fbs teams and two were ranked.

I'm all about covering the spread and moneylines. Glory favors the bold. Chance favors the prepared mind. Luck, well i have that too. University of Utah goes to the Pac-12 conference in 2011. I expect them to compete immediately for the conference CG. Brock Lesnar will defeat Cain Velasquez. Womens MMA, the next big thing in sports. Utah and Boise take care of business in week one. Don't be surprised if they both go undefeated.

Ha!

WHen I say different field, I realize that had a double entendre. Meant that they don’t have the week to week perparation requirements of a typical BCS team.

No.....I mean, HELL NO!

I just don’t like them. Sorry I don’t have a better explanation

by SneezyBeltran on Sep 7, 2010 1:31 AM CDT reply actions

Why

Is everyone hating them. True, they don’t play the schedule that is the most daunting, but they do the most important thing needed, WIN!!!! How many big schools lose to the pesky lil team all the time?? Just to see their season go to hell after that. Boise plays the schedule they have and they win, thats all they can do. If they run the table then kudos to them. Those WAC teams are a pesky lil bunch. Remember Fresno giving USC a scare a few years back?? Hawaii gave USC hell this last week. Through all the excuses and all the BS it comes down to winning. How bad do we look if we lose to Rice, or Wyoming, or who ever. A loss is a loss no matter what. Remember Boise doesnt have the recruits all these big schools have. No excuse, but if you cant beat a bunch of 3 or a few 4 star recruits the WTF!!!

My boy sleeps with one eye open and a foot in your ass!!

I thought there was a huge Boise-Bandwagon?

I don’t think ‘everyone’ hates them. I do think that the media is going a bit overboard. Cinderella only works for so long. Last night Musburger needed a towel to stop the drooling. They’ve gone from being so ‘underrated’ to being media saturated. I’m a bit suspicious of anything the wholesale media tries to cram down our throats. I usually root for the underdog, but I think they’ve worn out that distinction.

It's a win-win for me

So Boise plays Alabama for the MNC

1) Boise wins – How humbled will the SEC be
2) Bama wins – Everyone will say " Alabama is supposed to win!" and it will be a long, long time before we hear anymore about a non-AQ team in the MNC.

The fact that I can't tell you where Boise is

should be enough. I don’t like them.

Seriously, point them out on a map. You can’t do it.

Take all the names off the states and cities, and I'd find 'em

I couldn’t point to exactly where Boise is on a map with no political features on it at all, unless perhaps it were a satellite image, in which case I’d just look for one of the two most developed area in the area that I know to be Idaho.

Seriously, though, you can’t find it on a map?

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs.

I would have no problem with them going to the MNC if they played a tougher schedule.

They need to play another big time game per year. With their schedule 2 big games just isnt enough.
Or better yet they should move to a better conference.

by AlDe2356 on Sep 7, 2010 2:32 PM CDT reply actions

NO

I do not like them at all. They played some dirty ball in a couple games I saw last year, and from what I heard a couple WAC teams filed some complaints to the WAC about some shots Boise took. I remember one against Fresno State last year where a Boise player deliberately speared the QB head to head well after he released the ball and magically wasnt flagged and that was the game Boise got all they could handle. They can get ready all year for that one big game and get the win and everyone rides there hype. Its funny they beat OU and i am not complaining about that lol but damn they have used that win as Boise’s get out of jail free card ever since.
