Reggie Bush loses Heisman
http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/football/news?slug=ys-bushheisman090710
It looks like they aren't planning to give the Heisman to Vince. Just leave a vacancy for that year. This was a long time in coming. Vince proved his point in the NC game. Yahoo Sports has been on this story for over 2 years and it seemed it was just a matter of time. The sad part is all of the lost recognition that Vince so richly deserved in 2005. Too bad they won't award him the Heisman.

good...
…that they are taking it away. Someone has to teach kids that breaking rules has ramifications! This action by the Heisman Trust has made me respect them a lot.
As much as I would like us to claim another Heisman, I dont think I want a tainted one, and I suspect, given how competitive VY is, I dont think he wants anything to do with getting a Heisman. In his mind, there are the same people who though he was an inferior player to Reggie.

Now, if only...
Kirk Bohls would vacate his position, too. I did not think it was possible for someone to watch every VY game in 2005, and conclude that anyone other than Vince was the best player.
I love the fact that it stays....
…vacant. It will be a constant reminder when it comes time for former winners to vote.
Anyone hear the interview with Andre Ware?
Apparently his position is that, since no one on knew he was ineligible at the time and “you can’t erase those performances on the field”, that he “won the trophy outright” that year and it shouldn’t be taken away. He goes on to say that Pat Haden’s actions (returning the trophy, etc.) further blackened the eye of USC and that the discussion of whether or not to vacate the trophy would never have come up if USC hadn’t done that. HIs logic is interesting. Oh… and stupid.
I think Ware makes a concious effort
to support any view point that is the most controversial or outlandish to make himself relevant to the conversation, even if he is ridiculous. The whole ‘He got away with it so…no take backs’ is idiotic. And criticizing Pat Haden for doing the honorable thing….also Idiotic. He also claimed most of the other Heisman fraternity felt the same way and had accepted bush. I’m not sure that is the case without an actual tally and I doubt that is something the surviving award winners would do. I hate that he predicted OU’s season correctly last year. It seems to have given him a certain amount of credibility. He’s predicting the same for UT this year (4 loses I think) hoping for lightning to strike twice. Hey Andre! That whole lightning thing….go fly a kite.

I fully believe that Vince should have won it that year
but how can you guys want them to retroactively award Vince the trophy? Is it just unapologetic bias? Nationally, Mack is getting panned for suggesting that Vince deserves the trophy if it gets rescinded, and I don’t blame them; it wouldn’t be right, and Mack is unusually off base in this discussion. I’d tell the trust to keep the damn thing, we got the crystal ball.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
Posterity
If VY were retroactively awarded the trophy, 20 years from now, no one would know the difference. It would be added hardware. Does Alabama or Michigan disavow the “national championships” they were awarded by the Scripps media service?
I guess I can see both sides to this discussion
I don’t like to play what if’s, but….what if bush had run in the winning TD instead of VY and the outcome had been different? I’m sure the discussion board would sound a lot different. I think the fact that UT won the MNC and VY was the better player on the field has basically negated what would have been a Texas shitstorm and rightfully so. I come down on the side of vacate the trophy for that year as a reminder/warning that not playing by the rules will not be tolerated by the Heisman Trust. Mack is just trying to do right by VY & the university, although I think you’re right. It’s not going to play well around the country. He would be better served coaching up the next Heisman candidate and promoting that talent.
Unlikely that Bush would score on final play
since he wasn’t even on the field for USC’s last offensive snap of the game…(a.k.a. the last play of the game with a championship on the line.) Instead, USC chose to put 11 other guys on the field.
Thank God.....
… I remember Huff saying he was able to be in the box to stop White because Bush was not on the field.
Not on the last snap...
… but on the 4 and 2 before we scored the go ahead.
my point was based more on a hypothetical
if bush would have scored, been the best player on the field and carried his team to victory things would have been viewed completely different with the recent revelations of the bush infractions. This also begs the question why doesn’t the Heisman voting take place after the bowl games. VY definitely wins in 05, Jason White doesn’t win in 03 and Heupel wins in 00.
The two sides of the discussion are...
1. Vacate the trophy. It eliminates at least one motivation for people to lobby to have other/future Heisman candidates disqualified for one reason or the other (and the Trust will avoid being further embarrassed by Vince Young rejecting the “honor”…he’s already indicated that he might not be receptive).
2. Award the trophy to the 2nd place finisher on the ballot (I believe they do this in the Olympics).
The two sides of the discussion don’t involve Reggie Bush winning or losing the big game.
The award is a joke anyway and has been for awhile now.
What is the rationale
for not giving the trophy to the best college football player in 2005, which was VY?
Reggie Bush was a pro and was not elgible to recieve the trophy.
I think VY would accept it if UT asks him to.

To think Vince should get it now
is like arguing that you don’t care about something unless it benefits you. The Heisman is a crap award given to the player who has accrued the most recent media hype and everyone knows it. Vince has got his ring and his integrity. He doesn’t need a trashy popularity contest award.
What do we do if somehow Colt McCoy ends up on an NFL team starting against Vince Young?
Perfectly said!
Never ask a man if he's from Texas. If he is, he'll tell you soon enough. If he's not, don't embarrass him.
