I'm in law school there.

I like Lubbock a lot. It’s big enough that it has everything you need, it’s small enough that there’s no traffic, and the people couldn’t be nicer (undergrads when it comes to football notwithstanding).

My cousin was recruited by Tech. When he got back from the visit, he called and said he really like the school. I asked him if they had let him spend any actual time in the city of Lubbock. Of course, they didn’t. How would they get any recruits signed if they sent them into the city? I offered to send him back on my dime so he could spend some quality time at the Prairie Dog Farm and all the other great attractions around metropolitan area. He ended up at another school…thankfully.

I imagine Lubbock is like central Illinois,

where I spent 4 years in the Air Force. It was too hot in the summer, too cold in the winter, and too windy all year round. I recall once we had a dust storm and a rain storm on consecutive days, and I had to drive through both to get to and from a softball tournament. But I understand, whether in law school or med school, you go where you get accepted. We can’t all wind up in Hawaii.

4. they are wusses who are going to (of all the BCS Conferences) the BIG EAST

by whills on Jan 1, 2011 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

I have known

several TCU alums for a number of years. Most of them are pro-Texas, in any form, especially in last year’s BCS debacle game.

Perhaps they were the minority. We (BIG ? fka Big 12) had the opportunity to invite them w/ Cornholers & Coloradoans fleeing to greener pastures. We didn’t make any moves. Don’t blame them, this is America.

I watched the Rose Bowl & you’re spot on about Mack Brown’s playbook! I noted their offensive running plays didn’t involve running sideways 10 yards before turning it upfield. And blockers continuing to make blocks downfield instead of just standing around. And a Defense stopping a powerful running attack. Doesn’t look like anything I’ve seen past 2 years.

A little early, but question:

When did the Fiesta Bowl become a New Years day game? I remember the last time we were in it against tOSU it definitely was not at this premiere time slot.

since Fox was outbid for the Fiesta/Orange/Sugar Bowls by ESPN

ESPN/ABC used to only carry the Rose Bowl (per tradition), but has exclusive control of everything BCS now.

I know about the contractual issues with who gets the bowls

I just couldn’t remember whether Fox put the Fiesta Bowl on on New Years in the last couple of years or whether it was an ESPN change. I assume it’s the latter, then?

ESPN/ABC has become a monopoly

that is going to be able to charge cable companies (and thus we the public) a Gazillion dollars for contracts eventually!!

I’ve seen ESPN on in every bar that has TVs, and one day, almost all bars will have TVs

Patterson has built a program by identifying three-star recruits with raw talent overlooked by other programs and getting them to play at their highest level. I doubt that will change.

What we have here is a failure to execute.

by dimecoverage on Jan 1, 2011 7:13 PM CST up reply actions

So is TCU going to suck next year?

they’re losing a TON of starters. Basically starting from scratch. Same goes for Boise.

Unlikely that non-AQ teams will be making noise next year.

by goingforthecorner on Jan 1, 2011 7:09 PM CST reply actions

They recruit the DFW area and West Texas

So goes HS football in that area – so goes TCU

Maybe like 9-3 suck, but the running backs and enough of the O-line and D returns to ensure a top 3 finish in the MWC. I think 2012 will be an absolutely monster season for us though.

Agree Completely

What an accomplishment for Coach Patterson. Basically he took Macks, Aggie, and Stoops leftovers – worked at a University with no real resources to offer, and built one of the finest teams in the nation. Hat tip to TCU.

TCU tuition of $41K

and football scholarships aren’t likely to number more than twenty, are they? and student body of less than 10,000. At least private USC has more than twice that and gets most of CA’s top recruits.

I would think those will be obstacles to sustained greatness, despite Patterson

For every Colt McCoy you will get a Blake Gideon

You play the odds. Recruiting 5 stars invariably gives you the best chance in my opinion, especially on defense. You need speed and talent on defense. I agree though, you can find a lot of scrappy skill guys on the offensive side. But you do not stop recruiting the best players.

by owenh on Jan 1, 2011 7:53 PM CST up reply actions

That was foolish. Take your points, Huskies.

Leach foolish. You may not get another chance. You took 5 minutes off the clock, you could have had 3; now you die.

by whills on Jan 1, 2011 8:08 PM CST reply actions

UConn is already in too deep

They have to match OU blow for blow or the morale is gonna go in the tank. The middle is probably gonna close up now that UConn had some success with that. If they had any chance to upset OU, they needed that TD. It’s basically over now, barring turnovers.

by owenh on Jan 1, 2011 8:17 PM CST up reply actions

The FG would have been the morale booster.

You give your kids a reward, however small, and something to play for the rest of the game. You don’t give away your scoring chances.

by whills on Jan 1, 2011 8:19 PM CST up reply actions

No, but you don't let your team get swamped

like Leach did in ‘08. Fumbles, INTs, blocked kicks, injured people, any number of things can change a game dramatically. But if you’re way down, you’ll use most of your gas just get back close. Stay close, if you can, take every little crumb and keep playing as high a level as you can.

what lnghrn53 said

law schools tend to not offer many if any specializations. But you can certainly take a bunch of con law classes and “specialize” that way, even if the school doesn’t offer an official one.

Whoever said laughter is the best medicine had clearly never tasted Scotch.

by LonghornEm on Jan 1, 2011 8:45 PM CST up reply actions

I do not

But, just for the record, the vibe I’ve gotten is that most do offer some sort of certificate programs for “specialization,” but for the most part, you don’t really “specialize” until you practice in a specific field.

Big12-2 in the bowl games

I have to admit I have not really been pulling for the Big 12 this year in the bowl games. I did have the pleasure of quietly pulling for TCU at a Wisc. football watching party today. Very confusing. Do I pull for Florida to beat the big 10 or against florida. Overall, the big 12 and big 10 have sucked this bowl season. SEC dominating. Really bad day for big 10 today. I can’t root for the OU team since I would like them to lose to the overmatched Uconn team.
