Burnt Orange Hot Tub Time Machine circa 1997

As I have watched various bowl games over the past week and now today on New Year's, it struck me how strange it was to not be preparing for a Texas Longhorns bowl game watching party.  Since the 1997 season was the last time Texas was not in a bowl, I thought I would take us on a short trip as to what that year was like.  Some of it will ring bells, some of it will make you remember when, and some of it will make you go back to watching what's on TV:

Britain cedes Hong Kong (a British colony since 1841) back to China.

Princess Diana dies in road accident in Paris, France.

NASA's Mars Pathfinder probe lands on Mars.

An unmanned Progress cargo-ship crashes into the Mir space station.

Tiger Woods becomes the youngest golfer to win the Masters Tournament

Heaven's Gate cult members commit mass suicide in California

Timothy J. McVeigh sentenced to death for Oklahoma City bombing

I remember this year pretty well, junior year in High School. And gas prices around the ATX were cheaper than average, around 98 cents if I remember. Do you know how far I would drive right now if 98 cents got me a gallon? Because I don’t.
