4-6 years – losses from this year’s class and re-building; it took Auburn six years. Utah isn’t there yet, but will be eligible. TCU will lose a good class and QB, must reload/rebuild and adjust to the BE to some degree.

However, asking about this year is moot and merely speculation whereas we have a setting up situation next year and from then on. Utah would certainly have a better edge coming out of the Pac10. They really got the deal.

Auburn ran 87 plays; Oregon 76. 520 and 455 on the total yards respectively.
One, that’s a lot of plays…average is down around 72 or so, although Oregon averaged 80 this year. Wonder if there is a trend there with the full-time hurry-up style.
Two, for 975 yards total, scoring only 41 total points (39 offensive), is almost an outlier.

Yeah, bend-not-break defense worked well.
For teams without a top 10 defense (I think a first for a BCS game), they actually did well on the scoring end. Of course, TOs are killers.

You take over a team loaded with talent
or immediately can recruit it.
Look at the normal talent levels of those teams – always good to supremely great – so do the roll call.
Stoops took over what was a talented team but who could not execute, just error prone bumblers under Blake. He didn’t even have to change the offense that much. He just fine tuned the machine. In so many of these places that was the case. Chizik had to come up with more talent and then someone to run the machine. Carrol sold Hollywood and celebrity, homes of the gods and goddesses of our culture. Miles just had to choose which gumbo in which to put his filet.
We’re gonna fine tune our machine next year, with some shiny modifications. You heard the bait today…if you run the play well in practice, you do in the game. Anyone gets a chance. That opened a big door and healed a lot of wounds quickly.
Curious observation:
Malzahn runs this Auburn team. Kind of disconcerting if you are Gene Chizik. But I guess he’s thinking, Fuck it I got a crystal ball

Newton is gone to the draft, someone will take him 1st round. Malzahn has maybe one year left.
Oregon is a system and is going to be a top 5 team next year.

You don't have to be.
There’s no guarantee Chizik will stay. But once you’ve made the mark, you can draw talented people to you. Plus, chances are Mahzahn’s system, at least some great operating part of it, will remain.
I don’t put much stock in so more celebrity…there’s a lot of talented people out there just waiting for opportunity. Malzahn was just one of them.
Where do you think Chizik would go?
I think he stays at Auburn for the foreseeable future, unless one of the following things happens:
1. Miles leaves, and LSU throws Chizik huge money. Least likely.
2. Texas decides to try to replace a retired Mack by bringing back Chizik as HC. Also highly unlikely, IMO, because I really doubt the powers-that-be will look kindly on Chizik’s history of NCAA violations and antics.
3. Muschamp leaves Florida relatively quickly, and Chizik gets the job at his alma mater.
4. Chizik proves ineffective without Malzahn and Newton, guiding the program into the West cellar for several years, and is subsequently fired.

I was for Oregon, but personally I don’t understand the SEC hate. I guarantee if Texas, OU, and Nebraska combined for 5 consecutive NC’s, we’d be arrogant as a league as well. The SEC has earned its accolades by consistently playing the best football in the land.
However, just because the conference is better doesn’t mean Texas as an individual program can’t hold its own with any individual SEC program.

There have been some ridiculous statements, like that the SEC champion should automatically get to play in the BCS championship each year, that such-and-such undefeated team in another conference wouldn’t be able to compete in the SEC (heard this about Texas in 2005-2006), etc.

When I was a little kid
We lived next door to Billy Atkins, the fullback on that ’57 team. At the time (late 60s-early 70s) “Mr. Billy” was the head coach at Troy State University (NAIA national champs in ’69!). His daughter was my best friend, and his wife, “Miss Doris,” was gorgeous, a former Auburn cheerleader.
Their son, Ace, played on the Auburn team that went undefeated in 1993, but due to probation couldn’t play in a bowl game. Unfortunately, Mr. Billy passed away about 15 years ago. Ace is a novelist and professor of English at Ole Miss.
