Not The Big Brother Anymore...
With the announcement of Stacy Searels as offensive line coach, Mack’s makeover is complete. Unless/until somebody else leaves. Counting the strength & conditioning coach, that’s seven new faces on a 10-man staff. My apologies on the ages – what’s listed after the jump is close, but I was unable to find exact ages for some of the coaches.
New coach, age . . . former coach, age:
Offensive line – Searles 45, McWhorter 58
Receivers – Wyatt 44, Kennedy 43
O-coordinator – Harsin 34, GDavis 58
Secondary – Gray 48, Akina 52
Defensive tackles – BDavis 39, Tolleson 61
D-coordinator – Diaz 36, Muschamp 39
S&C (football) – Wylie 34, Madden 49
Holdover coaches
Defensive ends – Giles 40
Running backs – Applewhite 32
Tight ends – Chambers 49
The seven new hires average about 11½ years younger than the coaches they replace . . . The average age of the new staff is right at 40; it was around 48 for the 2009 staff . . . We had three coaches over 55 a year ago; there are none now that have hit 50 (unless I’m off on Chambers) . . . We had two coaches under 40 last year (Boom, Major); we have five under at this point.
Mack’s the dad now, not a big brother.

Well . . . it could be worse.
I’m older than the average age of LAST year’s staff. And it’s not even close.
Age is all in your head. If you feel young, you are.
What we have here is a failure to execute.

Well I'm older than both offensive coordinators age averaged together.
My first game was in person was 1955.
I want one more MNC before I join all those Longhorn greats in orange heven.
I proud of Mack for staying the course and keeping us amoung the elite in collegefootball.

Head Coach, 59
Mack Brown, age 59. He will be 60 August 27, 2011. I think he aged appreciably between September – December (well even into January with all the replacements going on). He is close to a retirement age, and I was arguing that point back in November. Perhaps, if he would have taken a closer look at that, then Muschamp might be Head Coach now, which I think would have been an infusion of strength for coaches and players of 2011.
However, I have forgiven Coach Brown at this point, not because I think Muschamp wouldn’t have been the better Head Coach for my beloved Longhorns, but because so much overhaul has gone on with the coaching staff, that I think we might have a chance to turn things around in 2011.
Even so, Coach Brown stays to 2012, 2013, whatever, UT will never find a replacement that they would have had in Muschamp. Maybe we’ll hire him away from Florida at that point.
Let's see what Muschamp does at Florida
His defenses here the last two years were not spectacular. ‘Bama ran the ball down our throats last year and this year’s defense was a terrible disappointment. I think there are better choices when Mack retires.

you've done it. you pulled me offsides.
I have to go sit on the sideline for awhile so I don’t freak out.

The left arm twitch
The officials never catch it. Darn, if we all just had the same opinions, life would be so interesting.

OK
We made it to the title game in 2009 because of our defense. Objectively, our defenses in 2009/2010 were much better than 2008, when you take into account our offensive issues.
I’d even make the case the defenses the past 2 years were better than any Mack Brown defense other than 2000-01 and 2004-05. I believe the 2009 defense actually was the best we’ve ever had, given the inability of the 2009 team to run the ball. Colt was pretty good in 2009, but had about 6 games where he had the “flu” or “hang nail.”
Muschamp was good.
I didn't say he wasn't good
I said
‘Bama ran the ball down our throats last year and this year’s defense was a terrible disappointment.
’Bama did it using the hated zone blocking and a one-armed QB. Anybody that was happy with the middle of the defense (coached by?) in either case has a different philosophy about defensive football than myself. I could not find the inside/middle linebacker on countless plays this year.
Points allowed in 2010 (this is the bottom line)
Alabama 37
UCLA 34
OU 28
Iowa St 28
Baylor 30
Kansas St 39
OSU 33
The 2009 schedule was weak until the last two games, loaded with La-Monroe, UTEP, Wyoming, UCF, Colorado and the rest of the Big 12 in a down year.
Sorry but not impressed. But I wish him luck in Florida.

To Be Fair
Helluva coaching job in 2008 given that secondary. He showed his ability to scheme and coach up IMHO. My gut feel is he will do a nice job with the Gators.
Note to Bill Byrne "Because you aren´t Texas and you´ll never be Texas"
Perfect
Exactly what the Longhorns need without a doubt. All coaches want to impress/elevate their coaching careers either as a Longhorn or a head coach elsewhere.
Status: Boss
2011
will be a defining year for M. Brown, so far his coaching selections are very impressive.
I think they are, too
I worry a bit about Diaz’s experience. I’m higher on Searels than many of you. I wonder why Nick Saban didn’t try to keep Bo Davis.
Interestingly, Kirk Bohls isn’t high on several of them. Kirk can be needlessly — sometimes gratingly — negative. But this is an easy place to blow smoke in Mack’s direction while chastizing lack of player availability, emphasis on show over substance, whatever. Bohls all but pans Wyatt, Davis and Diaz and isn’t doing back-flips over Searels.
I don’t always agree with him, but he’s damn near always right. I can’t argue with that.
I'm in
Searles is solid and it’s hard to find fault with the ‘Bama method of evaluating and developing D-lines. Diaz strikes me as a very intelligent coach who will be greatly aided by Jerry Gray’s experience.
It will be interesting to see how the staff itself responds to Mack’s Great Experiment.

I agree with you about Diaz' lack of experience
For that reason, I wondered why he was hired. Does Bohls have a summary analysis of all the new coaches, or are you getting this from his comments after each hire? Do you have a link?

from 1/20. Kirk several times, and Ced as well, didn’t exactly praise the new hires. Harsin, yes, and, to an extent Gray. Otherwise, their general comments were meh.
I don’t know how to link directly to it . . . Bevo Beat from here
11 1/2 year average youger with new hires? (Easy fix)
Fire Mack Brown, bring in Joe Paterno (+92 year avg. gain)
The largest known star is VY Canis Majoris
I don't care how old they are or that we now have an OL coach named Stacy
I’m just glad it’s over.
