Around SBN: Trent Richardson Interviews Fellow Brown Brandon Weeden

The two brothers will spend more time together this spring. Jaxon graduated from Brownwood in December. However, instead of enrolling at Texas this semester and getting a head start with the Longhorns in spring drills, he decided to spend time training and learning from his brother.

"Who wouldn't want to train from an NFL receiver," Jaxon said. "You're trying to get as much as information as you can from him and learn from him. We'll be doing a lot of training together, fishing and just hanging out."

Nice article. Can't wait to see him in burnt orange.

Sounds like fun

I don’t blame him one bit, I’d love to do that if I were in his shoes. Maybe when he gets back he’ll have some pointers on how to get more of our WRs catching the ball the way Jordan did.

Absolutely.

This is kind of experience you’ll treasure for the rest of your life. I’m happy for him.

They better save #8 for him

I’d love to turn on the TV and see a Shipley jersey with #8 again.

2011 Recruits

when do all the 2011 recruits officially start practicing with the Team for next season?

by jtdoes on Jan 24, 2011 6:05 PM CST reply actions

It depends

If they graduate early like Wood and McCoy did last year, they’ll be here for spring practice. If not, I believe they report sometime towards the end of summer, before the semester starts.

by mr.manager on Jan 24, 2011 6:17 PM CST up reply actions

Most usually report for the 1st summer session in the beginning of June

and do strength and conditioning and 7-on-7 work. Hence the importance of the strength and conditioning coach pushing the kids hard because he’s the only coach who can have contact with the players during the summer. Get your grind on with Bennie, boys.

Wow...that even made me want to go the gym

I hope that Gilbert and the other QBs see this as the time for them to start leading by example. They may not be the ones lifting the most weight, but they can be the most committed to cardio and getting a “team” concept in place.
Likewise with the D leaders. Some folks need to step up after the lack of unity last year.

Great BUT......Slippery Slope

I love the fact that these young men are taking the time to bond with each other, that’s something beyond football and that’s HELLA awesome. That being said Jaxon needs to hold the course, because there are so many pitfalls that can be unearthed with this type of training.

My older brother was in the NFL for part of the time my younger brother and I were at UT and LSU and the training we did together in the offseason WAS invaluable to our growth as players and BROTHERS, but my younger brother and I were always aware that we were VERY different from our older brother because football was his JOB (NFL = JOB) and football at the time for us was secondary because we were students first athletes second. The biggest danger is Jaxon, a 17 year old young man will be away from school for more than 8 months, then in August will have to jump start his brain and get ready for long hours of practice, weights, film, etc while hold 12 to 15 credits/units a semester, that can derail some of the smartest and most dedicated athletes.

"Jordan's getting married in May."

I doubt Jaxon is going on the honeymoon. He’ll be in school first session and take part in all activities from there on.

School may be a shock of sorts – any face-first encounter with massive bureaucracy usually is – but Jordon earned professional student status…he was here 26 six years and could give not only a good briefing on student life ins-and-outs but contrast that with the pro experience. So Jaxon’s experience may not resemble yours. Plus, these guys are small town/rural and Austin is much more an urban experience – different relationship – and one Jaxon will leave behind for the most part.

I wondered if someone would bring this up

I think him getting to train with his brother is awesome, but also think the time he could spend getting used to college life and spend with his new teammates might actually benefit him more. I didn’t read the article, but is he not planning on coming in for Summer school? He’s going to be out there working out with his brother, and living the life of a professional athlete, which is going to be a terrific experience for him, but it is also going to get him used to not being in school and not applying himself on a full-time schedule.

I’m not sure that is a good thing.

Beergut you are “good people” in my book with that smart comment. SO RIGHT on the money.

Beergut is very adept at trolling Texas fans and entertaining Aggy fans

but when he takes off his Aggy hat, he’s an insightful guy who knows his shit.

With that being said, go to hell Beergut, eabod, etc.

That is a once in a lifetime deal

from a selfish standpoint as a fan, it would be better if he was on campus immersing himself in the new system. However, you have to know that him getting to spend time with his bro will be great for him. BTW, that was a great article.

by miketag on Jan 25, 2011 2:36 AM CST reply actions

He'll be fine.

From what videos I’ve seen of him he looks like he plays football without even really trying. He makes it look effortless. I look at it as his mini vacation before all the time he’s going to put into being awesome at UT. He’ll get a little taste of what his brother has earned and will be fuel for his fire. I hope he enjoys himself. If he plays as well as we think he will, he’ll have plenty of opportunity to live it up at UT. Those are the ones I hope he passes up.

I can’t wait to see this kid in burnt orange.

Two things will never change...Jesus loves us and UT is awesome.

by fotwzyhorn on Jan 25, 2011 4:25 AM CST reply actions

It's a great opportunity to work with his bro

and even though you might like him to get involved in the new Harsin/Major system as soon as possible, I’m sure many of the things he can learn for Jordan will translate and benefit him greatly. Working on getting open against press coverage, route running which is already a strength, understanding coverages, etc. It will be scary, disgusting fun to watch another Shipley play.

by soonerspeak on Jan 25, 2011 11:13 AM CST reply actions

he can't loose

I see no problem with that. He’ll probably come in and be ready to step into a slot receiver for the spread.

by Ryan2907 on Jan 25, 2011 3:29 PM CST reply actions

Seems a bit dangerous

Look at the trouble Bryant ended up in hanging with his friend Deon for that individual training.

I would prefer him to get on campus and learn the system with his coaches and take a few classes to get a lead. Of course, he doesn’t care what I prefer but I think his decision is odd. I have a brother and we are close, but I would be anxious to start my own career and not tag along with him.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 25, 2011 5:28 PM CST reply actions

Hanging with Deion wasn't a violation

Lying about it, for some reason, was decided to be one.

Just Harsin around.
