With Okafor moving inside, DE depth is goddamn crazy thin. What's the plan? Are we moving Okafor or Dravanti to end? I think we should have gone for three DEs in 2011 class - now, let's hope we at least get Alexander.  Also, recruiting no DEs in 2008 is in all likelihood going to hurt us next year.

Whaley?

Or are we still pretending he’s a RB?

Hopefully Dorsey and/or Bible will be able to play alongside Randall

And Okafor will be able to move back outside. I think he has more potential at DE.

Agreed

Okafor did a commendable job on the line, but at DE he excells with his long wing span. He’s a monster DE.

What about Dom. Jones?

Didn’t he play DE and TE in h.s.?

I've noted this defensive end

void on several posts in recent weeks.

Coaches are at fault here . . . even if Okafor had stayed at end and Mims had not washed out, the position was thin. Those four and one true freshman totals just five DEs, 1-2 below the desired level. Anybody looking ahead 18 months ago could have seen the issue, and it was this week last year that Jeffcoat committed so the gap was clearly evident at that time.

Major flub on the part of whoever is in charge of looking ahead at the positional areas.

That said, we can see why Brandon Alexander has become a major target. And . . . I have to believe the staff plans to move Okafor or Dravannti or both to end — and may have one of the incoming LBers (Edmond, Thompson) ticketed for the spot as well. Because they can be blindsided so easily as they execute an outside rush, DEs are among the most likely to get hurt. Brian Orakpo missed most of his junior season after a knee injury, and JJ missed 4-5 games last fall.

I don't think the OP is accurate in numbers

Because Greg Daniels, Eddie Jones, etc. are all there—assuming “next year” means next season, which starts in less than eight months. If it means 2012, then there will be the five guys mentioned above, Daniels, and any guys who switch to DE (possibly Thompson or Edmond from 2011 class, or maybe Jackson, Allen, or someone like that from past classes). I think it’s hard to criticize the recruiting there, because they did target Dominique Jones, who had to switch because of the bloodiness at TE.

Just Harsin around.

Greg Daniels and Eddie Jones

Greg Daniels has been training at DT all last year. He has gained weight, and in most likelihood would stay there. Forgive my ignorance, Eddie Jones was a senior last year, did he get a 5th year?

Nope, that's my mistake on Jones

And if Daniels has in fact been training exclusively at DT, then the ignorance was actually mine.

Why does not recruiting any DEs in '08 hurt us next year (2012)?

Next year (I’m assuming you mean 2012), we have Okafor (possibly), Jeffcoat, Wilson, Reed, Alexander, and Daniels (or he might slide down to DT) plus anyone I forgot.

Add into that the DEs that committ from the 2012 class.

But maybe I am just confused

Next year

By next year, I meant this upcoming season. So, 2008 recruits would be RS juniors or seniors. I don’t remember if we missed on someone that year, but then in 2009 we take 4, but none are at DE anymore.

DE depth

I see Okafor and Jeffcoat as the starters at DE. The depth would likely look something like this…Reggie Wilson, and Dravanti Johnson at 2nd string with Daniels and Reed also getting significant playing time along with the other true freshman we bring in.

Dravannti Johnson is about the same size as Jeffcoat (but less athletic), and will play a mix of OLB/DE IMO. Greg Daniels is listed on Texassports.com as weighing in at 250 lbs.?! No way that they leave him at DT if that’s where he was working before. He has prototypical size for a DE.

DT’s should be: Randall, Howell, Bible, Dorsey, Cotton, Kriegel and maybe TF Desmond Jackson…Russell, with the injury will probably redshirt.

Kriegel and other thoughts

Dominique Jones should slide back to DE as we have 6 or 7 TE’s on the roster and that is offensive. If Grant and Irby return we will have more than enough depth at TE and Jones was rated higher as a DE coming out of high school then he was TE. With the announcement that Whaley is likely going to be tested at DE that would leave us with IMO:

Okafor,Jr.
Jeffcoat,Soph.
Wilson,Soph.
Dr.Johnson,Soph.
Daniels,RS Fr.
Reed,HS Fr.
Jones,Jr.
Whaley,Soph.

Also, Kriegel could add to the depth at DT with a new coaching philosophy on the defensive side of the ball.

Tevin Mims

I must be missing something. But I haven’t seen a press release from Bellmont saying he has left the program. Usually they release one when a kid leaves. That and his name is still up on MBTF. Are they waiting till spring practice or did I just miss it?
