Texas-Iowa State: Post-Game Celebration Thread
Considering that the Cyclones have only one win over the Longhorns in the history of the series, winning a game over Iowa State is essentially a birthright for Texas. After a humiliating beatdown in Austin last season, Mack Brown's squad headed out to Ames to exact revenge and came away with a 37-14 victory that was not as close as the final margin.
Even though Texas missed some opportunities early in *only* scoring 13 points in the first quarter, three touchdowns in the second quarter put the game away, including a blocked punt by Mykkele Thompson returned by fellow frosh Josh Turner.
David Ash was strong in an expanded role throwing the football, including two touchdown passes, one on a trick play as the Longhorn seemingly let off the accerlerator in the second half to cruise to the final margin.
Blake Gideon had some strong plays, including an interception that accounted for one of the three Texas turnovers, and Texas left no doubt in this one.
This is your post-game celebration thread.

As much as I don’t like the mistakes that he can sometimes make, if he can make some plays and not miss tackles, I’m fine with him.

It is kind of amazing. The kid can be so solid...hustles, hits like a small locomotive and just flat out gives everything...
and then sometimes, it’s like he left his brains in the locker room. At least Mr. Hyde showed up tonight…good for him.
Harsin is such a bad ass
I hope the innovative and imaginative play-calling stays with Texas football forever. I hope he takes over for Mack once he decides to step down while Major gets promoted to solo OC.

It's like Christmas:
1. Horns are 4-0 and though still young, look very solid.
2. Aggy learns what realignment really means. Again.
Time for happy dreams…nighty night BON’ers. Hook ’em…
Both NU and A&M fans should realize Texas hasn't been their biggest problem.

Offensive MVP: Jaxon Shipley (the hype didn’t do him justice)
Defensive MVP: Kenny Vaccaro (whose last two weeks all but assured an early draft entry)
Defensive surprise: Blake Gideon (how complete a game did he have today?!)
Offensive surprise: David Ash (I’ve been beating his drum all year long, but nice to see him step up and make some big time throws. Keep giving him snaps and he’ll learn quick)

A little hyperbole? This is his first year starting, lets lay off this talk of going pro until he can actually sustain it and cover some legit receivers. See Stills and Broyles.

Not too early at all
He’s a 215 lb safety that’s physical in the run game, can hit TEs and WRs over the middle, and has legit cover skills. On consecutive plays last week he lays out a 6’7" TE then gets a pick on a wheel route. This week on consecutive plays he sheds a block on from an OT to blow up an option, then gets a PBU the next snap. Given his home situation and the tape he’s showing scouts, I’d be surprised if he’s back next year.

Like I said lets see if he can sustain it.
He was not very good in coverage last year and hasn’t been challenged by any elite receivers yet. Talk to you in two weeks after Stills, Broyles and Blackmon. UCLA receivers were tall and nothing else.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
He held up on his own last year. Only time I remember him being beat was by ISU when he was supposed to have safety help over the top, but it was C. Scott…
He’s not going to be asked to cover Broyles, Fuller, or Blackmon moving forward. He’s not a corner and he’s not going to project there. We play him in some nickel out of necessity and the versatility he provides. But in the league he’s going to be covering TEs and RBs and he is built precisely for that. I’m not the only one who thinks he’s gone after this year as well.

You're certainly not the only one
but I think most of it is based on potential and not production. Until he proves he has progressed in coverage since last year he will at his very best be an undersized linebacker playing safety in the NFL who can’t cover, ala Roy Williams.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
I really think you're confusing a CB for a SS
when it comes to on field responsibilities and coverages. He’s been lights out this year.

I never said he hasn't been lights out this year.
I simply stated twice previously that let’s wait and see if he can sustain it against better competition. Vaccarro is in his 1st year starting and everyone here is predicting he’ll go pro after 4 games. That’s ridiculous!

You're entitled to your opinion
He played alot last year and has everything that NFL scouts look for in terms of size, aggression, and speed. He’s a beast against the run, and is a playmaker. He may stay, but all signs point to an early exit from the 40. The S class isn’t that highly touted this year, and when big $ is flashed in his eyes, if he gets a chance to be a top 2 rounder, he’ll probably go.

If Curtis Brown and Chykie Brown got drafted,
Vaccaro will definitely get drafted.
Who said anything about not getting drafted?
The dialogue was in reference to Vaccarro leaving after this year. Chykie and Curtis were both seniors. Your point is weak.

Lol...whoa there cowboy
Why so defensive? Lol but since my “point is weak,” your point that Chykie Brown and Curtis Brown got draft just because they were seniors is even weaker. One of the dumbest things I’ve heard in a football argument in my life. Did you even watch Texas football last year? Did you see how awful those 2 were in coverage? Curtis Brown dropped 2 punts in one game last year. I was saying that if they got drafted after how poorly they played, Vaccaro will be drafted whenever he comes out. Are you saying that ALL SENIORS get drafted into the NFL??? Because John Chiles was a Senior, and he didn’t get drafted. There are a lot of Seniors who don’t get drafted. Now whose point is weak?
1st half was incredible. The 2nd half was so frustrating…the only thing keeping me from going over the edge due to sloppy play was seeing so many of the 2nd and 3rd strings in there getting playing time. On the other hand, there seems to be a big drop-off from1st team – we really struggled to do anything in the 4th quarter.
Valuable learning experience.
Didn’t push hard in the 2nd, don’t thnk that Harsin was really looking for blood.

Missed the game due to a wedding
Was able to catch the post game on the radio and haven’t heard anything about McCoy, and not mention of him here, which seems odds since I presume he started. How did he play?
Not as good as UCLA IMHO, but solid enough...
I think the wanted to give more reps to Ash to put game time on his expanded package. He is learning well and doing better…though he had a couple of freshman brain farts. McCoy’s and Ash’s completion stats were roughly the same, though Ash connected for two TD’s…
Do you bother to read previous comments before you post?

Like garbage.
Missed way too many open throws, and didn’t know when to run and when he did run he slides a yard in front of the sticks. Not a good game at all for lil McCoy. He needs to step it up.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
he wasn't stellar but...
He had some horrible line coverage on the right side several times. He got rushed on some throws ‘cuz the line collapsed. But have to somewhat agree…he wasn’t 100%.
McCoy should have had a TD tonight when
he threw over the middle on third down to DJ Grant as he was getting pummeled in the pocket.
Case played ok, he didn’t get a ton of snaps, and he was obviously frustrated by that.

What really helps our potential move up in the rankings
is the teams way in front of us either got blown out (Nebraska), got beat by an unranked team (South Carolina), lost to a lower ranked team at home (VT), or lost their starting QB (Florida – not celebrating this by the way, just saying it will cause them to be ranked further down then they otherwise might have been since they lost to a very high ranked team).

A great win
Fozzy was impressive tonight. I was happy for him.
The offense never really got into rhythm – relied on big plays and great field position to manufacture points. I’ll take it.
Case made a pretty demonstrative flailing arm gesture up towards the Offensive Coordinator booth when he was pulled for Ash in the 2nd QTR. Mack chewed him out on the sidelines. Case needs to get those emotions in check and accept his role.
Shipley had another great game. Some of the little things he does to fool DBs are amazing- esp when the ball is in the air – he waits to til the absolute last second to react to the football and that’s why db’s never have their eyes on the ball when Ship is targeted. This kid is amazing.
I hope Hicks is OK. Looks like he tweaked a hamstring.
If we run a CoJo dive on any more important 4th and 1s this year I’m going to break my TV. As impressive as Harsin has been, he’s been predictable and fairly unsuccessful with his 4th down calls. We’ve been stuffed on 4th and short multiple times. Malcolm Brown should get carries on 4th and 1 and we start running Ash on bootleg options on 4th down so teams aren’t stuffing the box with 9 players crashing down.
Blake Gideon had one of his best games as a horn. Zone coverage is his forte. Congrats Blake.
The kickoffs and punts are mediocre to below average. This probably aint changing this year or next. That sucks.
Steve Edmond is bad ass. Dude is huge and can move. I hope we keep his as an LB and don’t spin him down to the D line.
Looking forward to playing OU.
I'm pretty sure that we are 4 for 6 on fourth down
That being said cj needs to stop juking short yardage

Sure looked good on that TD run. Pushed 2 or 3 defenders into the end zone. I remember looking at the pictures of him after the offseason workouts and thinking how much he had bulked up. Really looks like it payed off earlier in the season, but particularly tonight.
We are starting to show some great weapons on both defense and offense. Quite the change in attitude from last year.

Mike Davis
I am wondering what BONers think of Mike this year.
Some reports out of spring camp and fall practice had Mike Davis performing at an elite level and there were mentions he might be a “3 and done” type player.
While I like Mike as a deep threat and he catches the ball when he’s WIDE open, he’s really fell way short of my expectations as an all around WR. He irks me because he never wins a 50/50 ball for his QB and he lacks physicality in the run game. I make it my hobby to watch Mike on most plays and he’s constantly shying away from contact and not blocking. He was actually the lead blocker in a reverse tonight and he didn’t even get his hat on one defender. That pissed me off.
Just wondering if I’m overreacting because I had high expectations or if anyone else notices.
His future was tied to Garrett early on. Case is just incapable of getting Mike D the ball. The Ash bomb to Davis is what he needs. Despite lacking elite top end speed, Mike D is a weapon with the deep ball. I fully expect for Mike D to continue to come on as Ash gets more run at QB.

Both QB's have played well
And it was the right decision to bench GG, but I also understand why the coaches took a chance with him to start the season. Gilbert represented the highest potential this season at the position because he opened up almost the entire offense compared to Ash and McCoy. Just a darn shame he couldn’t get it together.
by TheElusiveShadow on Oct 2, 2011 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions
Agreed. Gilbert being the guy was the best situation for everyone, just didn’t work. I think Ash gives us the best opportunity moving forward because he is just capable of so much more and doesn’t seem TO prone like Garrett was. The 1st grounding play was a typical true freshman bonehead play, but he’ll learn.
Hook 'em! @michaelpelech10 on Twitter
by The Audit Horn on Oct 2, 2011 12:10 AM CDT via iPhone app up reply actions
Not the worst thing he could do though
The true freshman bonehead play would have been to take a sack or try to make a crazy throw that would inevitably be intercepted. He had the right idea to throw it in the ground, just didn’t notice who he was throwing to. Throwing out of bounds would have been better though.
+1
I watched him in practice and pay special attention to him in games and he runs silky routes and can cause tons of problems on the outside. We just have to give him opportunities to touch the ball. When he’s working the intermediate and deep balls it really opens up the field. This O is predicated on stretching the field vertically and horizontally!!!
by French-Horn on Oct 2, 2011 4:26 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions
They only
threw the ball 24 times. I wonder if that because of young/unexperienced QBs or do the WRs still have the dropsies. I love that they’re sticking to a running gameplan, but what about running a slant on 3rd and long or something.

I noticed the Case outburst and was surprised
I would have thought that given that Ash had already thrown two touch downs that he would understand his place on the offense. I hope both HarsinWhite and Mack have a long talk with him after the game…
And by the way…
OU still sucks
Greg Davis... Gone!
Can I express some irritation?
I have a bone to pick with Case. I know he’s small and it’s tough for him to get the ball out with a rusher in his face, but if Irby is open you get the man the damn ball! I just wanna give Irby a standing ovation for his first catch back, whether it’s at DKR or on my couch.
I’ll vent about that second half later.

Texas won, and looked good doing it.
A&M lost, by blowing a big lead for the second straight week. They also maintained their unblemished record against $EC teams since the formation of the Big XII, as they are now 0-7 against their future conference mates.
Nebraska lost their first B1G conference game, and it wasn’t close. I’m not quite sure how, but it must be Texas’ fault. Just ask Tom Osborne.
And, the Rangers won to tie their series against the Rays.

Great win against a confident Iowa State heading into this game on the road.
However, I know the coaches and team probably took the gas off the pedal in the 2nd half but I was a bit disappointed in our play in the 2nd half. Offense and Defense seemed messy and not crisp.

What to expect next week
Listen, I know that this is the “celebration” thread, but I’m extremely worried about next week.
There is no question that this team is performing at a much higher level than last year. That said, our three, non-Rice victories have been over teams that essentially self-destructed. When BYU, UCLA and Iowa State weren’t committing dumb penalties and turnovers, they’ve more than held their own against us. Our offense has looked pretty average. We can’t miss on red zone opportunities going forward like we have the past two games. There have only been a few sustained drives starting inside Texas territory. The defense has certainly “earned” a lot of those turnovers, but the rushing defense is shaky, at best.
I feel very excited about this team, and they’re probably ahead of where we should have expected them to be, but I think that Oklahoma (and maybe OKST) might expose us in a lot of the areas where we are still developing. I worry about our defense’s ability to stop a good team consistently, and our offense’s ability to go touchdown for touchdown against them.
Some one please tell me why I shouldn’t worry.
You shouldn't worry
We never expected to be 4-0 during “Hate Week”, much less expect a win against OU. I think we’ll be competitive, and with a rivalry like this one, you never know what to expect. Hell, look at Peter Gardere’s years at UT. 4 years in a row we beat a top 10 ranked OU, while we were classed as “underdogs” in each of those games.
Don’t fret, the season is long so just sit back and enjoy the unfolding of a new era here at Texas. We’re not the same kind of team we used to be, and next year we have a chance to be completely dominant and run the table.
Of course, we could come out in the Gary Kubiak Dream Formation (5 TE’s) and make Venables’ head explode, and coast to an ass kicking of 52-10. This is the RRS. Anything can happen.
Oh, and I am NOT IMPRESSED with Oklahoma’s “ability” to run the football. At all. Our run D is fine.

you couldn't beat our team last year that bad
What makes you think this year will be different?

SECede?....Whoop(s)!!
Back at ya
Time to get the hate on. Hopefully the Gooner squad will be thinking the same thoughts and underestimate our upstarts. A Ball State tuneup doesn’t impress.

self destruction
Don’t under estimate the defense on causing the opponents to self district. The opposing team doesn’t self destruct on their own, the are inhibited by the defense.

Well done, Longhorns.
That was a fun year of scoreboard. Maybe sometime you can get nice and bloated and complacent and Greg Davis-y at the top and we can do it again sometime.
Good luck moving forward this year.

Thanks, Cy....
ISU has some good players and I really like the job Rhoads has done coaching. You pretty well summed up our issues last season.
Good luck the rest of the season.
OU is going to expose our young team....
and I think it will be a good thing. We have a chance to win this game, but it’s going to take a complete game. No more under thrown TD’s passes and loose kick off coverage. OU will take full advantage of the good field position.
OU scores 10,000 points against Ball State
Impressive…Running up the score on Ball State because 40 points just isn’t enough against the mighty Ballers. Stoops is a real class act suffering from the “spoiled rich kid syndrome”…a big winner…except in most bowl games…
I was at the TX/OU game last year and TEXAS played the worst football I have ever seen…and yet, OU could never put the game away.
So, after you finish beating up on The Agnes Elementary School pee-wee squad, to prove your collective boyhood, you will start reviewing game tape and realize that Greg Davis is gone and the TEXAS playbook looks more like a…BOOK!
So, Sooners, get back to your classes and take your mid-term exams in “pig-poking” and “pickle eating” then put on the game tape for TEXAS and…be afraid…be very afraid…it is going to be a tough, scary week for the Sooners! And the scariest part…when the RRS is over…YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO OKLAHOMA!!! Boo!
For the short term goal of beating OU there's plenty to be concerned about
But for the longer term goal of rebuilding sustainable excellence in our program, I’m extremely satisfied (and a little surprised) with where we’re at already.
Can we win giving up
possibly two kick off returns for touchdowns. If we lose, I bet we give up a touchdown there.
Agree!
I do not understand why this problem appears so deeply entrenched and un-resolvable for the Horns…
Feeling great about last night's win
1. We beat a team on the road that (A) whipped us at home last year and (B) definitely came into that game expecting to beat us again.
2. We did not play great football and showed a lot of things on film that will require focus this week to get fixed. I think the team will understand that OU won’t give as many gifts as we got yesterday from ISU. Practice will be intense this week.
3. That said, I think this young Texas team goes into RRS expecting to win next weekend. It may not happen but the confidence has to be building. It won’t be overconfidence. It will be just the right amount of confidence.
4. Our depth chart on defense got a major workout in live snaps yesterday. I swear that we started putting in 2012 commits late in the fourth quarter. Did they get gashed a bit? Yes, but injuries always happen in the RRS and those snaps for the backups are like gold. We actually have film on those guys (and identified plenty of areas for improvement). Plus we got to see who is “ready” (Steve Edmond, anyone?) I don’t consider those garbage time minutes either because their first team was still in and still playing to win. The other major benefit is that everybody shows up at practice this week paying attention because you now know that your number can/will be called.
Any worries? On the one hand, not really. I never expected this game to be competitive this year. I’m not expecting a win but I now expect it to be competitive and I think a win is definitely possible. That’s amazing. That’s fun… The only major heartburn that I have is our kickoff team.
We seem to be getting progressively worse in this department as the year goes on. I expect by the A&M game that every kick will just be onside because that’s as far as Tucker can kick it anyway, so why not? Seriously, we must be close to last in the nation in whatever kickoff statistic there is that measures net yard of kick divided by yard of return multiplied by number of open run lanes… or something like that.
The big question is, why no improvement? Why no change? Can’t Mykkele Thompson boot a kick into the end zone? What about David Ash? Sedrick Flowers? Seriously—and I’m assuming that we score enough to warrant multiple kickoffs next weekend—we are putting our D in a hole if we kick line drives to the 18 yard line and OU catches them on a full sprint. They will start every drive at the 50. I see improvement everywhere I look in this team except for this one area. That’s a bummer.
Other than that, I’m very excited to see our boys compete next week. Hook ’em.
Only if someone gets hurt.

Amazing freshmen
When’s the last time we saw a pair of freshman look so dominant on the field from day 1? It’s truly a pleasure watching these Malcolm Brown and Jaxon Shipley play football.
Jamaal Charles
is the only freshman I can remember having a big impact his first year under Mack Brown. I must admit, I did not want to buy into all the hype before the season started, but I am really impressed with Shipley. Hopefully they continue to play well and improve as their careers go on. You have a sense that barring injury, these 2 young men are going to have very special careers at UT
Is anybody else as excited about Mykkele Thompson as I am?
I remember at the signing day presser, Mack said he wanted to give him a go at QB but Duane Akina begged for him to be a DB. I have a feeling we will see him at QB for at least 1 play against OU this Saturday. He looked solid playing db too last week. Kinda the same way Byndom was thrown in there last season. I didn’t notice Sheroid Evans was out there, but I saw in the stat box he was credited with a couple of tackles. I think Evans will do just fine at safety just because of his speed. Overall, I’m petty excited about our team moving forward. The young guys are getting playing time and they are playing very, very well. Hopefully we can knock off OU this Saturday and roll right on to an undefeated season.
