Sundays with Bill, OSU Recap Edition
Tough loss yesterday in a game that very well could have Texas' way. There's some positives in the loss, but also some concerns.
Talking points:
* The positives: Carrington Byndom going head to head with Justin Blackmon, Malcolm Brown's big day, D.J. Monroe continues to impress, Mike Davis is back hopefully.
* The negatives: lack of pass rush, run defense, offensive play calling in the red zone, the turnover bug.
* Moving forward with Ash
* Recruiting notes : confirmed visitors at the OSU game, the Daje Johnson Offer Mystery Hour, of the 5 2012 QBs (Childress, Armstrong, Barnes, Millweard, and Overstreet) being considered by Texas which one do you want the most? Does Texas take a flyer on Trevor Knight?
* Thankfully no realignment news of note.
I've a couple aspirin to get over the OSU loss. I'm ready to go, fire away with your questions. Let's start the discussion.

Ash
Good to see the coaches going with Ash, I feel there’s more potential with Ash than McCoy.
I agree. David has a lot of work to do, but he doesn’t have the physical limitations that Case does. Harsin seems to have made a decision and he’s moving forward with Ash as his quarterback.

I think Ash is the man from here on out. Texas will take their lumps this year in the hopes of building for next year.

Jake Oliver was at the Texas game instead of the TAMU game. Both were very high profile games pitting ranked teams against one another, and Oliver went with Texas. Could be something, could be nothing. Conservatively, I’d say t’s a good sign, nothing more.

QB position
Any word on how Case is handling the demotion? I heard he sat on the bench a majority of the game and seemed detached
When I saw him on the sideline he had the head phones on and was helping with calls and signals. Tough deal for Case. We’ll see what happens.

What’s the scoop with Daje, and what’s the latest with those 5 QBs? Muchos Gracias
As I said on Friday, the Texas coaches have reached out to the Houston Kinkaid staff about Ford Childress. They also requested film. Texas also requested film on 2012 Tatum QB / ATH Jalen Overstreet. Those are two most recent QB recruiting developments.
Nothing yet on Daje Johnson receiving a Texas offer yet. Honestly, I think Texas is waiting for him to decommit from TCU before they offer. In the past that’s how the Texas staff has preferred to deal with committed recruits.

I talked with Christian Morgan this afternoon
Christian watched the Texas game yesterday from home and he said he was very encouraged that Texas fought hard and was able to hang with OSU. I hope other recruits share his view.

With ash getting the starting nod do u think case transfers and if he does how many qbs do we take in the next two classes??
I do think Case will transfer. I’ve heard Case transferring last season was close to happening.
I think Texas MUST take 2 QBs in 2012. Brewer is well aware of the situation, and understands.

Jaxon Shipley
I wasn’t expecting Ash to have telepathic communication with Shipley like the McCoys do, but I also don’t understand why Shipley didn’t get many touches. What do you think>?
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Hard to tell on TV
But I saw open receivers and I wonder if Ash just needs more confidence to start cutting loose. Hard to remember he was playing in high school last year. But, I just know Shipley was open at times.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Goodwin was also open a few times, and Ash targeted Davis instead.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:18 PM CDT up reply actions
OSU put all of their coverage focus on Shipley
If you review our film from this season, it’s pretty easy to get the impression that he is the only wideout worth a damn.
Ash seems to have better chemistry than Mike Davis. I’d also like to see Shipley get more touches.
I think Ash threw way too often yesterday. 40 passes in a game shouldn’t happen again this season. Malcolm Brown needs to average at least 20 carries from here on out. Fozzy also needs to get more touches, he’s Texas best playmaker right now.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:17 PM CDT up reply actions
Foz was exhausted by the end of the game
He is now returning all those kickoffs, which is both physically draining and dangerous.
He is also the wild qb, plays in the slot some and tb, of course.
Foz was so tired by the end of the game he was not running well. Probably Foz needs fewer touches at TB, since carries from the TB position tend to be punishing.
Monroe could pick up the slack with more touches at tb.
Here's a depressing thought
If Case transfers and Shipley starts getting used less, might he transfer with Case, especially if he thinks Case is not getting a fair deal?
"Only angry people win football games." --DKR
Strongly disagree with that notion. Shipley is at Texas to stay. Why would he leave a great opportunity at Texas to go with Case? They’re close, but they’re not so close that Jaxon would make a poor decision.

Interesting question
but Ship wants to play on Sundays and it is hard to get to the nfl from Abilene Christian.
Our new coordinators
do you think they were overrated or are they just limited with lack of player that they need to successfully implement their schemes?
Diaz’s defense is limited because it doesn’t have excellent pass rushers. His whole defensive philosophy is based on getting to the QB. Does Texas have a consistent pass rusher?
Harsin’s offense is limited because of the quarterback. Ash is better than Case, but the QB play isn’t anywhere close where it needs to be. Texas needs to run the ball even more, and not get cute in the red zone. If you’re in 4 down territory and inside the 10, run the ball on every down.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:21 PM CDT up reply actions 1 recs
You can't run effectively inside if the DC overloads the box
which is what OSU DC was doing. A DC can force you to pass by overloading the box (for example, by putting 8 in the box). Everybody we play from here on in will try to force Ash to throw the ball.
Having said that, a short easy throw to Monroe or Foz in the flat is going to be tough to defend if 8 defenders are jammed into the box.
Fozzy
I think Fozzy will make a NFL team next year because he can really return kicks. It’s even possible that he get drafted if he continues his excellent senior season.

Texas Triplets
encouraged by the freshmen triplets of Ash,Brown and Shipley. If we get all four years out of them we will be very potent on offense.
The offenseive line just seems adequate. What can be done to improve it Bill?
Also how much blame should be attached to Greg Davis for Gilbert’s failure and the development of McCoy?
by TCB Orange Dino on Oct 16, 2011 5:20 PM CDT reply actions
I think the OL will get better with Cochran starting at LT. Great development in Josh Cochran coming on as a starting LT. He’s way ahead of schedule. I also think Flowers needs to start and Snow needs to come off the bench. I know playing more freshman at OL sounds strange, but Texas has gotten better play from the youngsters.
At the end, it’s one Gilbert to improve. Sure Davis isn’t blameless, but Davis at the OC didn’t stop Colt and Vince from being Heisman finalists.

The offense will get even better next year with Johnathan Gray in the fold. I think Texas should run it close to 60 percent the remainder of this year and next year.

Any comments by the recruits at the game? Nice comment by Morgan. Yep, do hope more recruits look at it that way.
Mack needs to wake up and offer Daje. Screw the fact that he is committed. Offer and get him.
What do you think of Kevin getting a grey shit offer?
I could not believe we were in 5 wides at the goaline.
What happened to trying to get a 5 yard our or curl with the TE? Doesn’t have to be a long pass.
With both S playing up, I feel we should have thrown it deep to Goodwin once to back them up early 2nd quarter. (either my guy runs under it or no one gets it). We did it to Ship2 4th Q I believe, but he was well out.
Liked what I saw from Ash for the most part. Good job throwing it away when nothing was there, just learn to hold on the ball when u get hit and to get it out by the 3 second clock in ur head. Hope we continue to go with Ash the rest of the way.
Will never happen but we need 2 JC players in next years class, probably at DL. No push at all(3 plays all game).
Our coordinators made a couple of mistake but that’s bound to happen, they need to pick it up a bit also.
WR need more routes where they can continue to run after the catch. Not JUST 5 yard outs and curls.
Fozzy could very well be a late round draft pick, will def get on a roster next year(barring injury).
Texas even in losses, can sell some nice things to recruits. That’s why we had a top 5 recruiting class in 2011 despite a bad 2010 season. We see a loss, a recruit might see a chance to play. They’re funny like that.
I can’t figure out what’s going on with Daje and Texas. I will say he’s ours when we want him, and that won’t change.
I think the greyshirt offer to Vacarro is appropriate. There are better 2012 options at DB right now. 2013 would be a better year to take Kevin. 2013 isn’t deep at DB.
Agreed. Texas should pound the rock in the red zone.
I think Denico Autry needs to be given serious consideration by Texas. He could have an instant impact coming out of East Mississippi Junior College. The Texas pass rush must get better next year period.

I've actually been shocked by the confidence placed in Ash,
by both the coaches and the majority of fans. I was at the OU game and watched OSU on TV, but in both instances I felt like Ash played poorly. Neither impressed anyone in the OU game, but I still thought Case had a better sense of when to scramble and get rid of the ball. In both games, it seemed to me like Ash would panic after his first read was covered, and he takes way too long in the pocket. His accuracy is bad too. It’s clear that Ash has a much stronger arm, but I think Case is more of a play maker. Again, I’m shocked the coaches seemed to have already made their decision. Personally, I think Case should be our starter, or at the very least should be given more of a chance in a big game. Are these valid points or am I smoking something?
BEVO IS ANGRY!
Ash has had some growing pains, but we can’t see what the coaches see in practice. If you trust the new coaches, you have to trust their decision to go with Ash.
The sledding will get much easier against Kansas. I think David can have a big game.

What is everyone wanting case start he is not his brother people need to realize this and with ash he is a TRUE FRESHMEN he is going to have growing pains he has more upside than McCoy!!!
I think there’s part of the fanbase that like Case because of the UCLA game and his last name. It’s understandable, but I think going with Ash is the better move. Ash is going to make some mistakes, but he can make plays that Case could NEVER make.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:44 PM CDT up reply actions
It is very early to tell, but I respectfully disagree.
The main thing is, I don’t think EITHER qb has truly made a strong case (no pun intended) for themselves. Like I said, both played horrible in the OU game. Case was 9/16 for 116 yds in the Cotton Bowl and had no picks, while Ash was 11/20 for 107 yards, 2 picks, 1 TD. Granted, Case had those 2 bad fumbles, but how does that performance earn Ash the starting position? His 22/40 for 139 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT performance yesterday is not compelling. Also, keep in mind Ash’s stats for this year are 46/79, 459 yards, 3 TD, 4 INT; McCoy’s are 35/53, 451 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT, and he’s played ONE LESS GAME than Ash.
I personally don’t care about Case’s last name because I doubt he will be as good as Colt. What I do worry about is Ash becoming Gilbert 2.0. How are people sold on Ash all of the sudden?
BEVO IS ANGRY!
People are not universally sold on Ash
One offers long term upside that gels with what the OC’s want to do, the other does not. It’s really pretty simple. It’s not a situation where one guy outplays the other, but the second gets in because of natural talent. They’ve played reasonably equally, but one is younger and more talented. Coaches should be commended for making a tough choice.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Again, I disagree. I think the qb situation should continue to be fluid.
But Ash must be making waves in practice. It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the next 6 games.
BEVO IS ANGRY!
That's fair
It’s a tough spot. I look forward to the yield from Ash next year though, which I just can’t see coming from Case.

by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 6:30 PM CDT up reply actions
neither
Have looked good. Cases best play bounced off a defender into Davis’s hands. Fact is both were horrible vs OU. Ash look very tentative after the pick. Held the ball too long on a couple plays. That said he did mAke some nice plays with his legs. I am ok with people saying Case has “it”, mostly because I have no idea what that means. Case gets happy feet in the pocket. So does Ash, but with his ability he has a chance to run for a first, Case doesn’t have that ability.

This would have to be guesswork, I suppose . . .
What do we do about a backup QB next season?
I see us taking Brewer and maybe 2 more, one of whom might be a change-of-pace QB who could honcho the Wildhorn Pkg. But all would be fresh out of HS. Is there some way we create a more experienced QB by switching someone already on the roster to QB? I’d love to do that with with Y-2K, but I see him as critical to our safety picture.
Thanks for your expertise.
I’d be surprised if Texas takes more than 2 QBs in the 2012 class. Personally, it scares the hell out of me with Brewer as a back up. I’d take a less talented, more polished QB with the hopes of redshirting Connor and using the other QB as a back up.
That being said, a college ready freshman QB won’t fall from the sky.

Any chance we pick up a JUCO or other transfer?
This seems a real need next year if the McCoy transfer theory plays out. To solve this, do you think the staff would consider a JUCO transfer or a transfer from another school? Would a quality QB be available (and willing) to fill the back-up role? I cannot remember Texas ever picking up a JUCO transfer.
Great game by Byndum!! Diggs played ok.
Any update on injury to Phillips?

Harsin's Reputation
is to make good in-game adjustments and attack the defense’s weakness. If this is true, why did Harsin decide to stop running the ball when clearly OSU could not stop our run game?
I was thinking about that very question last night and this morning. Honestly, I don’t know. From Harsin’s post game comments, he saw something in OSU’s defense that he thought he could attack. If so, OSU fooled him. Texas should have ran the ball more especially in the red zone.
Harsin is still learning how the Big 12 works.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:38 PM CDT up reply actions
Isn't it because OSU loaded the box so Harsin had to make them respect the pass?
If teams put 8 in the box we need Harsin to allow, encouarge, and enable Ash to throw it to all parts of the field. A lot of this is also on the receivers to get open and also adapt better. We also need to try throwing to our backs on screens and mixing in delays. Also, how many deep passes did we try yesterday? World class speed and we’re not mixing in more unabaahed verticals why?
Anyway, I have faith that Ash will speed up his reads and also lern to give the backs the ball on options instead of always keeping it himself. With every snap he gains a little experience and will start to see the game better.
Not really
Harsin mentioned they loaded the box, but it didn’t really appear so in watching the game. They generally had 7 guys in there and even when they had 8 we still had success. So there’s really no legitimate excuse, other than that Bill Young did something to fool him. OSU seemed more like they were playing the big play almost the entire game, to me.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Yep, I think Harsin took whatever bait Bill Young put out for him. 40 passes is way too much.
by billfromlaketravis on Oct 16, 2011 5:57 PM CDT up reply actions
I respect ypur opinion, but totally disagree
We didnt score points yesterday not because we didn’t run it enought but because we were too predictable. How many crappy option reads went for 2 or 3 yards. Just because Malcolm had a few nice runs, just because we’re all programmed to think not losing yards running is good thanks to Greg Davis doesn’t mean we’re a dominant running team. Want to be dominant, get a better OL. That takes time. Until en, make people defend the whole field and those short runa become long runs and those field goals and punts turn into touchdowns.
We saw what happened with that strategy
Our linemen simply can’t hold up enough in pass pro. Also, “A few nice runs” by Malcolm could have been “A lot of nice runs” by Malcolm if we had stuck to it more.
Maybe it would have worked, maybe not, but if something is working, how is it logical to spite yourself by trying to do something else? Ash and the pass-pro of the OL are our biggest offensive weaknesses right now. Why put the game on their shoulders? That doesn’t makes sense to me.
I agree that the ZR wasn’t working well do to the pretty pitiful blocking on it, especially by the WRs.
We may not be a dominant running team, but that doesn’t mean we can’t win the game that way or that it’s not a better strategy than forcing our true frosh QB to scramble around like a crazy man in the backfield with WRs that he doesn’t have the rapport with to get open in the scramble game.
One was working, the other wasn’t.

Crowd
This is a building block for next year but we do need to get to 8 wins for many reasons.
Was at the game yesterday and was very disappointed in the crowd. Noise, energy. Its shameful when u compare it to Lsu, Aggie, Oregon fans. Someone texted me that the announcers even mentioned it in the 3rd quarter.
pointed out
They did more than point it out. Mc Donough ridiculed the crowd. He said the crowd booed the officials louder than they ever cheered for the Horns.
Not only that
But said that they loudly booed the officials, incorrectly, 3 straight times.
The did mention it
Unfortunately, they mentioned it on offense, which made zero sense. I’m the first to point out how terrible UT fans are at any sporting event with regards to crowd noise, but you simply do not intentionally make a lot of noise during your OWN possession in football and two guys as old as McDonough and Millen should know that.

Is there a limit on the number of recruits a school can invite to come visit a game during each year? I noticed on your post that we had Connor Brewer in as a game visitor and wondered if it was by design to bring in visitors along with already commited recruits to act as a quasi marketing guy to talk-up the program to the other visitors.
Thanks again for the great work, Bill.

Thinking our recruiting coordinator is a very busy man
With so many potential recruits you want to bring in “unofficially” to watch a game, trying to pick which games to bring them in to prevent sideline caos with too many recruits crowding the sideline, etc. I get major tired-head thinking of all the juggling and scheduling and trying to stay in compliance…kinda like the NCAA version of an air traffic controller.

Cody had some good blocks, but he needs to get out of the way. He had 2 “tackles” on offense. One of which was likely a touchdown by Fozzy.

Cody
It seems that Harsin is making most of his own decisions on the offensive side. It also seems to be the common cocensus, outside of Matt Millen, that Cody has some major holes in his game. Why would Harsind continue to play Cody if we had someone who could do a better job?
Roberson might be able to do a better job
Part of it is probably a “deal with the devil” type thing that the coaches did with Chiles in moving him to WR. Again, though, a lot of it goes back to just not having that position prepared for under Greg Davis’s spread passing offense with Colt.

He had problems dude
He looked totally lost on two differnt blocking assignmemts, hitting Jaxon most notably. He needs to learn to drive his block until the whistle or get his head on a swivel not stand around with his thumb where it doesn’t belong.
Yeah
Cody is just not a consistent blocker. He may have some nice blocks, but your job as a FB is simple compared to the rest of the offense. He doesn’t pay attention to what is happening in the game, far too often.

Is Childress a late bloomer? What kind of player would he be?
I seem to recall that Ash — even though he was well regarded and was an early commit — had kind of a breakout senior season in HS. Or is that my faulty memory?
David did have a very strong senior season after being hurt his junior year.
Childress isn’t necessarily a late bloomer, he’s just stayed under the radar. He hasn’t gone to many camps and he plays in TAPPS. A perfect combo for keeping your recruitment quiet.

I like Childress the most because he runs and throws well, and has excellent size. Level of competition is the only concern with Childress. I think the other can do some nice things, but Childress is the most complete player.

I'm among those not sold completely on DAsh yet.
I don’t see anything he has done on the field that has led to him becoming the obvious choice for starter. I didn’t see him attempt one throw that Case could not make. In fact wasn’t DAsh 0 for 4 on passes over 14 yards yesterday?

The LBs were supposed to be the best corps in 25 years at Texas. Acho18 and Edmond are very good, but who else has played well?
I have no idea what happened to Jeffcoat’s pass rushing ability. Okafor was also supposed to be a threat off the edge. I believe Wilson and Dr. Johnson should play more, Okafor and Jeffcoat seem to be a in funk for lack of a better explanation.

Robinson and Hicks
Bill,
It seems you are very high on edmonds but low on hicks and robinson, can you elaborate more on why?
by jtdoes on Oct 16, 2011 7:29 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
Edmond has excellent football instincts. When he gets snaps, he makes plays and fills his gap. Hicks and Robinson have had severe problems filling their gaps. Hicks especially. Robinson is playing out of position, and this is Hicks first season as a starter.
I’d like to see Texas’ base defense consist of Acho and Robinson at OLB, and Edmond at MLB. Hicks would probably be better served coming off the bench. He’s had a rough 2 games. Hicks picked the wrong gap on two very long runs against OU and OSU.

Gray is just one of the last guys in the class that would switch (along with Brewer, Jones, DLT, and a few others) and he was never seriously considering OU in his decision-making process.
If he were to go anywhere else, it would likely be TCU or even A&M. He also has repeatedly expressed an interest in a 2-RB system with MB. Just don’t see any reason why he’d switch, particularly given A) our running success this season and B) our willingness to play Brown early in his career.

Can we get back to our offensive performance and Ash ?
I have mixed feelings on Ash, but I was really surprised that Harsin would put this much pressure (43 pass plays) on a true freshman in his first start against a top 5 team. Makes no sense to me other than our OC has as much to learn about the Big 12 as our freshman QB.
The running game was working and our QB was not recognizing blitzes, no checking off, and obviously had no grasp of the coverages….and yet Harsin continued to call pass plays.
Football 101 says when something is working (the running game) you keep doing it until the defense stops it. Harsin kept going to the pass .
OU and OSU took Harsin to school last week, but it didn’t look like the lesson took.
We need to emphasis our running game and gradually bring Ash up to speed or we will have another GG Head Case running the show.

Agreed 40 + passes is way too much. Need to run the ball more. Texas needs to keep defenses honest, but they can accomplish that with 15 -20 passes a game from Ash. David should be a game manager from here on out. I don’t think he can win a game by himself right now.

"Or we will have another GG head case"

KU
Would be a great game to faze in Mykkele and Sheroid for possibly injured seniors Scott and Gideon. Phillips is obviously part of the future, but he could be hurt as well.
KU’s also a good game to start getting the young LBs in, as they aren’t going to be able to pass all over us like OU did and will have to run to keep us honest. Edmond could be very prolific in that game.
Cochran starting is a great start; let’s see the trend continue.

I don't necessarily agree with your premise
We could have won the game on Saturday if we would have stayed with the running game
I don’t know that we had ANY chance to win the game, frankly. OSU played a cover 2 against us all night with pretty good success against the run with damned good succes against the pass.
They were a superior TEAM and deserved to win. We showed fight and promise and WILL win next year and the year after.

If you go back through the game, the vast majority of our drives were stopped because of our pass plays
Our runs not only achieved twice as much yardage per attempt, but they didn’t require our first time starting, QB, to read coverages, recognize blitzes, or make decisions. yes OSU is good, but our D was doing enough to slow them down where a couple of more successful drives could have put us over the top and I do recognize we are building and probably will back in the drivers seat in the next few years. And yes, I did play ball.

Bill or Blake help me out here
I see were at 18 recruits for this class as of now. How many more recruits do you think we will take in by signing day. And out of anymore recruits UT gets do you think there will be any shockers the same way we got Jeffcoat and Hicks
I think we could go a full 25 due to the QB attrition
One OT, one QB, one DL, two DB, and one WR/DB seem to be necessary right now, which would be 24. The other spot would likely be an APB like Daje Johnson.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
There is no doubt that Texas take one more OT in this class. It’s must. Armstead is the in state contingency plan.
I think Texas will take one more corner and a corner / safety hybrid.
I think they’ll take a DE. This could be the toughest position to fill.
They should take another ATH / utility back type of player. Daje Johnson is the leading candidate.
I wouldn’t rule out another DT. There could be attrition there. Round Rock’s Glen Antoine is likely the leading candidate.

Would like to see
Javonte Magee’s Sr. film. Hookem.com is absolutely in love with him. He could be very good as a huge and disruptive DT, which would give us more flexibility with Norman as a DE and assuage that rather stark need.

RB: Johnson
OT: Armstead
DT: Magee
DB: Coleman
DB: Sanders
Something like that to close out the class.

Jeffcoat wasn’t a shocker. Hicks was surprising because it’s difficult to take recruits away from tOSU, or it was. Both had Texas in their top 2-3 the whole time, but made their decisions very late in the process.
Texas is really taking their time with the 2012 class. I thought new offers would already have gone out. There’s plenty of senior film on all the players being evaluated. They could be waiting out the OOS recruits. I just hope they’re staying in contact with the contingency plans.
I think 23 is plausible, 25 is within the realm of possibility. There seems to be a feeling that attrition is coming after the season.

Random thoughts...
Saban and Mack are pretty much the same age, so I don’t think he would be a candidate. Besides in Alabama he’s the most popular man in a state dominated by college football. Texas (the state) has lots going on besides football.
Ash is right on schedule with the exception of protecting the football. I’m talking about fumbles, not interceptions. He has put it on the ground in each of the last two games. He has to learn to protect the ball when the pocket breaks down. Interceptions are part of playing quarterback, and the pass protection we have almost makes some inevitable.
Harsin seemed to call plays as though he had an experienced quarterback. I thought that more first down runs would have been a better strategy, but if this speeds the development of Ash into a competent qb, I’m all for it. We will probably lose at least two more games. The real key objectives for this year are to continue to improve while developing the young players, and to be eligible for a bowl so we get the extra practice while preparing for the bowl.
We’ll be better next year, but will still be young particularly on the offensive line where physical maturity is most important. Everyone needs to manage their expectations until 2013 when this team should be ready to roll.

Texas will be LOADED next year. Our systems will have a years experience behind them and our kids will show this. In addition, our COACHES will have a years experience behind them and will be ready for bear.
Our big weak spot, QB, will have an experienced player with a dynamite freshman back up. We will have our OL problems straightened out with EVALUATED and talented freshmen and immense talent coming in. We will have TWO exceptional running backs (one of whom appears to be talent special on a plane with VY). We will have, arguably, the best defensive backfield, not only in the conference but in the nation and with a superior linebacker core to augment them.
Furthermore, Ash will have learned more about reads and will actually start finding his receivers who will, also, be some of the best in the conference.

Most of Manny’s blitzes don’t bring that many people. Most of them only bring 5, or even 4, because we are generally dropping a DE from somewhere. The biggest problem is that if they run to the side we drop the DE on we are screwed because there’s nobody there. Or if they pass to the spot vacated by the blitzers and the DE can’t get there quickly enough. It’s generally (not always) less about not having numbers and more about putting our players in uncomfortable positions (DEs having to cover and read the QB; DBs trying to run over OL en route to a sack).
When I say I think our blitz isn’t working, I think it’s more that we seem to have more success playing a base set and just letting our guys try to do what they do. At least in those cases we were collapsing the pocket some, while the blitzers are either going to get direct pressure or none at all (DBs and LBs are generally not going to blow back OL).
Just my thoughts on the fire zone.

Bill, with all the talk about 2012, will we have a quality TE?

said Ash could be another Tebow.
I’m sure the coaches don’t want him running all that much.
If he got hurt we would have only one QB and Fozzy.
