The New Big 12 vs. The Old Big 12: By the Numbers
For your Friday night entertainment, a quick comparison of what the Big 12 is losing with Texas A&M and Missouri football departing and what the conference gains by adding West Virginia and TCU. We've gone back and compared the gain/loss solely by record since 2002 (the last year Rivals would give records to enable lazy easy stat gathering). The results, presented without further commentary:
| TCU/WVU | TAMU/Mizzou | |
| Wins | 177 | 130 |
| Losses | 51 | 96 |
| Bowl Wins | 10 | 3 |
| Bowl Losses | 7 | 9 |
| BCS Bowls | 4 | 0 |
| 10+ win seasons | 10 | 3 |
| Non-winning Seasons | 1 | 7 |
| 77 Point Losses | 0 | 1 |

Past Perfomance
Not necessarily indicative of future results.
But on the surface it is a stark improvement.
I truly enjoyed the last part of the graph
nice parting shot. kudos to you sir.
Cut!
No. No. No, man.
You're making me fall asleep.

Who played the better competition?
Though I gotta say. That TCU win over Wisconsin in the rose bowl was nice.

WVU has BCS bowl wins over Georgia and OU, TCU has a BCS win over Wisconsin
Plus, the Ags are 57-54 over that stretchwhich is bad anywhere and Mizzou has been in the Big 12 North (not exactly a worldbeating conference)

Thanks for the support. haha
We’ve also had some decent non conference games during the last few years. Went 1-1 with Auburn, 2-0 with Mississippi State (though granted, they weren’t very good even then.) Gave LSU a good game last year, and this year too, despite the final score after we feel apart. 1-1 with Colorado, etc. Though to be fair, we’ve dropped a number of games we should have definitely won, i.e. Syracuse and East Carolina to name a few.

Thought about that, but...
In-conference sked could seem weaker for these two teams, but when they get to the bowl games they validate themselves…over and over again.
Damn 40
When you put it that way, TCU/WVU is a SERIOUS upgrade in competition and profile, kinda like going from a Palm Pre to a HTC Evo 3D!

WOW....that is incredible.
and we get rid of the crybabies of the conference. I’m thrilled. Bravo!!
Now…let’s see…our first big loss was the 1-7 CU Buffaloes. Right? We are suppose to be upset about that?
Nebraska is fine for the moment, but let’s take a deeper look at the not so good Big 10 this year. NU plays the Spartans tomorrow…..then later have Penn State and Michigan away. I think the Big XII is just fine, and save the SEC I don’t think any other conference comes close. Pac is really sucking, and Big 10 is so so.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Crybabies?
Yawn. Our alumni and tv markets trump both of those teams ccombined. Enjoy your new conference, suckers.
No, Jackass is right,
they’ve had the Hearne, Caldwell and Navasota markets locked up for decades. Now we’re never going to get those! But I’ve heard aggy support in Snook and Somerville is cracking.

Enjoy mediocrity
Its the one thing you Aggies are good at, besides blaming Texas of course.
Which will become exponentially more difficult, what with us in a different conference and all. But I’m sure you guys will find some way to pin your failures on us. Some how, some way we’ll continue to be the nasty villain keeping those poor Aggies from assuming their rightful place among the football elite…right?

Your fight song
What will you replace Texas with in your fight song? your new love, SEC? Ark? Miss St?
I love this argument
As though the fact that USC brings the Los Angeles market makes the Pac 12 a superior conference. Last I checked it was the product on the field not the number of TV sets watching that determined the quality of a conference.

2002?
Nice spin there, moron. Enjoy the grand markets you just brought in. Desperate much?
so were you born stupid or did you hit your head at some point?
i believe he lists why the start date is 2002 because its the farthest back the Rivals.com records go.

Another perspective
Further to 40AS’s football comparison, it is difficult to compare the 4 teams in a vacuum. With that said, I think the one program performance rating worth some merit in terms of evaluating the trade off is win/loss vs. BCS-AQ teams. And, in terms of the time frame for comparison it is “what have you done for me lately” which drives discussion. Performance vs. AQ talent indicates to me what each program did when given the opportunity to play against top talent.
Here’s a look at combined W-L vs. BCS-AQ.

What this chart tells me is just how awful the A&M program has been the last several seasons. Like him or hate him, It also shows what an incredible job Coach Patterson has done at TCU. And doing so in the shadows of the giant-killer, feel good Boise State Broncos and the long shadows of Big 12 football in Texas.
Given the recency bias, the trade off, in terms of performance quality, appears to give a solid edge to the addition of WVU and TCU despite of a more even performance last few years.
As for a qualitative perspective, all I can offer is it is certainly interesting times in college athletics. I’m somewhat old school wanting to hold on to those traditions but let’s face the facts. Some of you may not remember clearly because it was the days before the internet, but I remember clearly thinking to myself, “What is a Kansas State?” back when the SWC/Big 8 consolidation was being discussed. Now there was a program that I knew nothing about. They turned out alright in Big 12 competition on the gridiron and the hardwood. So, I’m good with the changes. Tough to lose A&M because of the long standing rivalry. Could care less about Mizzou because it’s kind of like, “I was looking for a job when I found this one.” Adios, Tigers. Good luck to you.

The basketball perspective
Over the last decade, A&M has made big strides on the court, but West Virginia has been better overall. West Virginia is currently a perennial top 25 team with an outstanding (if poorly dressed) coach.
A&M is moving to a very top heavy basketball conference (some top tier programs and a lot of garbage) and has a new coach, so it remains to be seen which direction their program will go. Will they continue to build, maintain, or lose ground? Time will tell.
Mizzou is also a solid program. They seem to have historically maintained well through coaching changes, but we will see how they do. Again, the SEC is a strange basketball conference. Kentucky and Florida are very strong. LSU is sort of a sleeping giant (in a very deep sleep right now). Most of the rest of the conference has little or no interest or tradition when it comes to basketball. We will see how the other UT moves forward from their scandals. You can’t totally sleep on Alabama either, as they usually have a lot of talent and run out some good teams.
TCU is a giant step down in this. They haven’t been good since Billy Tubbs was their coach. This may shock you, but in the 1997-1998 season they were actually the #6 team in the country by SRS. Billy Tubbs was a hell of a coach. It hasn’t been particularly pretty since he left.
So, given the state of the programs currently, I have WVU> A&M ~ Mizzou >> TCU. So the Big 12 gains a better team and a substantially worse team than the ones they give up.

Thanks
I was going to post something similar for basketball and baseball. The way I see it, A&M and TCU are draws in baseball and WVU and Mizzou are draws as well (as far as being equally bad)

http://www.twitter.com/JayMashBON
Yeah
B-Ball is definately a net loss here. I think that is one area where A&M (and Mizzou, but especially A&M) might do better in the SEC. I am not as big a believer in Florida. I think the Ags could come in and compete to be top 2-3 in the conference.
But I like to hear that the football quality is better. I think it is (at least if recent history is an indicator).
The TV Market is one thing I don’t know much about. Does getting West Virginia do much for the Big 12? B/c TCU does not.
Will this move stabalize the conference? And if so, for how long?
Whatever the long term result of these moves, I think the short term will be interesting to watch!

Not sure what SEC bball will look like when the Ags and Mizzou hit...
but this year the SEC should be very good. In addition to Florida and Kentucky, Vandy could be very good (like top 5-10 in the country good). And Alabama is solid.
A&M basketball is at a crossroads this season. Their previous coach is now at Maryland. Billy Kennedy (their new head coach) was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He is currently on medical leave. This is a major bummer, in a season where A&M had pretty high expectations. I hope Kennedy comes back this season, but he should do what is best for himself. It makes you wonder what the future holds for their program.

We could still add Louisville
and be ahead again in basketball.
