Texas Football Recruiting: Texas vs. OU Game Visitors
Mario Edwards Highlights (via 247SportsStudio)
Please tell me you were playing the Mario Brothers theme song in your head while watching that video. 2012 Denton Ryan DE Mario Edwards will be at the Texas - OU Game as one of the many guests of the Texas Longhorns. More after the jump.
"Super" Mario Edwards headlines the list of Texas - OU Game visitors. Not only is Edwards attending the Red Red Rivalry (RRR), per Hook Em 247, Edwards will be making an official visit to Texas during the Oklahoma State game weekend. Huge news from a recruit that was all but signed and delivered to Florida State. Texas is still likely on the outside looking in with Edwards, but if they play well these next two weeks it could help their chances.
Texas is the home team this year for the RRR, so they can host recruits. However, because the game is played at a neutral field, the coaches are not allowed to speak with the recruits at the game. It is still a great game for recruits to attend to see the pageantry and grandeur that is the Texas - OU Game.
The Working List of Texas - OU Game Visitors:
Class of 2012 Commits:
QB, Connor Brewer, Chaparral (Scottsdale, AZ) -- Big-time visitor. It will be great to get Connor around Mario Edwards and the 2013 targets for the first time.
RB, Johnathan Gray, Aledo -- Last week, Gray went for 347 yards on 16 carries and scored seven touchdowns. Unreal.
WR, Thomas Johnson, Dallas Skyline -- Finally healthy and killing it during his senior season. Playing up to his potential and turning heads. Texas got a good one.
OL, Curtis Riser, DeSoto -- Also finally healthy and playing up to his enormous potential. Could be the top guard in the country.
DT, Alex Norman, Dallas Bishop Dunne -- Recently said he was down to 270 - 272 pounds. Could start off as a swing guy at Texas. Could help with DE and DT depth right away.
DE, Caleb Bluiett, Beaumont West Brook -- Bluiett has done everything for West Brook this season, from playing on nearly every coverage unit, to defensive end and linebacker, as well as some action on offenses.
DE, Hassan Ridgeway, Mansfield -- It's staggering to to think about, but the OU Game will be the first college football game Ridgeway has attended. Very rare with Metroplex recruits.
LB, Alex De La Torre, Denton Ryan -- Having an outstanding senior year. Can he help recruit Edwards to Texas?
LB, Peter Jinkens, Dallas Skyline --
DB, Bryson Echols, DeSoto --
K, Nick Jordan, Coppell -- Could the long-awaited answer on kick offs. Jordan can boom it out of the endzone.
Class of 2012 Targets:
DE, Torshiro Davis, Woodlawn (Shreveport, LA) -- Currently committed to LSU. Could take official visits to Texas, OU, and Alabama. Probably a Bama - LSU battle at this point. Texas should get an official visit, but there's not much optimism of landing Davis.
DE, Mario Edwards, Denton Ryan -- Great news to get Edwards to the RRR. Better news that's officially visiting Texas next weekend. Can Texas flip the top defensive player in the state?
ATH, Daniel Brooks, Port Lavaca Calhoun -- Committed to OU. Brooks attending the RRR as a guest of the Longhorns surprised me. Brooks is said to be getting firmer in his commitment to OU.
Class of 2013 Targets:
QB, JT Barrett, Wichita Falls Rider -- Coach Harsin recently requested the game film of every single game Barrett has played in. I still think Swoopes is the guy, but Harsin is doing his due diligence.
QB, Devante Kincade, Dallas Skyline -- Feels like a courtesy invite. Haven't heard Texas is interested.
QB, Tyrone Swoopes, Whitewright -- Likely Texas' top QB choice for 2013. Probably a TCU-Texas battle, with Texas as the current leader.
RB, Dontre Wilson, DeSoto -- Likely a lock to be offered. Big-time utility back. Likely a Texas-Oregon battle.
WR, Marcell Ateman, Wylie East -- Big time visitor. Ateman is big on the Horns, but might be a package deal with teammate Quan Jones. Ateman and Oliver are my top 2013 in state receivers.
WR, Quan Jones, Wylie East - Texas doesn't seem very interested, and neither does Jones at this point.
WR, Jake Oliver, Dallas Jesuit - top junior receiver in Texas. Technique and football IQ compare favorably to the Shipleys. Will be a tough get because his father is a former TAMU player. Oliver seems very open to Texas at this time.
WR, Ra'Shaad Samples, Dallas Skyline - could be the slot receiver in 2013 class. Father is the head coach at Dallas Skyline.
TE, Jeremiah Gaines, Red Oak - being recruited as a H back by Texas, could also play LB.
TE, Christian Morgan, Plano Prestonwood Christian - a Peanut Gallery favorite. Morgan is likely being recruited by Texas as a TE, but I like him better at strong side DE. Comes from a Texas Family, the Horns will likely get him if they offer.
OL/DL, Jake Raulerson, Celina - there seems to be momentum for Raulerson playing DE at Texas. I would probably classify Jake as an ATH right now because he's being recruited as an OT, DE and jumbo LB. Recently watched Florida get blown out by Alabama in person. Texas will likely get him if they continue to play well this season. Should be one of the first offers of 2013 class.
OL/DL, A'Shawn Robinson, FW Arlington Heights - Texas is likely the leader. Feels like an early commitment. Texas is the only school Robinson has visited this fall. Coach Searels loves this recruit.
OL, Ishmael Wilson, Dallas Bishop Dunne - flying up recruiting boards, LSU is the leader. Wilson is from Louisiana originally. Texas appears to be getting involved, but is Wilson a priority for Texas? Is it too little too late? Will likely commit to LSU if offered.
DE, Tyus Bowser, Tyler John Tyler -- Finally a 2013 in-state DE emerges. May be one of the best-looking juniors on the hoof in the entire state.
DE/LB, Deon Hollins, Jr., Fort Bend Marshall -- Hollins has drawn favorable comparisons to Von Miller. Could a Buck target for Texas.
LB, Travon Blanchard, West Orange-Stark
LB, Brett Wade, Kennedale -- Another Peanut Gallery favorite. Top inside linebacker recruit in Texas for 2013. Texas is one of Wade's favorites. Will be a heated recruiting battle between Texas and TAMU. Both need Wade.
DB, Will Barrows, Dallas Skyline -- I'll get a chance to see Barrows and the many Skyline recruits live tonight. I think Barrows is a take all the way.
ATH, Chevoski Collins, Livingston -- Differing opinions on Collins. Some believe Texas is recruiting him as a slot receiver, others believe he is being recruited as a safety. Great athlete either way, position at Texas could depend on need. Likely another Texas - TAMU battle.
ATH, Greg Ward, Tyler John Tyler
OL / DL, Darius James, Killeen Harker Heights -- Top center in 2013 class. Extremely athletic, also plays basketball. Very high on Texas, likely a Junior Day commitment. Could be attending with teammate Camrhon Hughes.
2013 Targets That Will Not be at Texas - OU Game
Many of these recruits have games on Saturday or Friday night and will be unable to travel to Dallas in time for the game.
RB, Keith Ford, Cypress Ranch -- Top 2013 feature back in Texas. TAMU Is on him hard, remains to be seen how interested Texas is.
RB, James White, Pearland Dawson -- Also in the mix as the top feature back in Texas for 2013. Major has hid his hand very well with 2013 RB recruiting. Wilson is the only back that seems like a lock for a Texas offer at this time.
WR, Jacorey Warrick, Cypress Falls -- Camped at Texas this summer. Seems to be a mutual interest. Could be in the mix for an offer from Texas as a slot receiver or corner.
TE, Derrick Griffin, Rosenberg Terry -- Most athletic TE prospect in Texas in years. TAMU is all over him, Texas needs to pick it up. There are basketball concerns.
OL, Ja'Braylin Thomas, Weimar -- Texas has backed off some. Might be too raw for a Texas team that needs offensive linemen to play early in their college careers.
DT, Isaiah Golden, Elysian Fields -- Very high on TAMU. Texas needs to pick it up or lose him. Golden recently had his knee scoped. Very athletic, also plays fullback regularly.
DT, Vincent Taylor, San Antonio Madison -- Texas is in Taylor's top 4. A little light for DT right now. Could be a swing guy.
DB, Antwuan Davis, Bastrop -- Very high on Texas. Likely commits when offered. Top corner in the state. Shut down skills and runs a 10.4 100.
* 2012 Richardson Pearce ATH Corey Coleman has been invited to the Texas - OU Game by Coach Wyatt. No word yet on if he'll attend, but Coleman is friends with many Texas commits.
* Cayleb Jones may attend the game. Still looking for confirmation.
* Dorial Green-Beckham has a game on Friday night and will not be able to attend the game.
I'll add to this list as more recruits are confirmed as visitors to the RRR. Please free to add visitors in the comments section.
I'll be at the Dallas Skyline - Dallas Jesuit games tonight watching the talent ball out in a pivotal Distrcit 9 -5A battle. There could as many 20 or more D1 recruits playing in this game. Look for my write up early next week.
As always, join me for Sundays with Bill at 5 pm. We'll talk OU Recap, recruiting and team news.
Enjoy OU weekend Burnt Orange Nation Citizens. Travel safe.

Will there be room for any fans at the game with all of those recruits?
Is it normal to have so many recruits at the OU game?
It’s pretty common to try and get the current commits and the upcoming targets together at the OU game. There will also be sophomores and freshman at the game that aren’t listed. When Texas hosts the OU game it’s always a HUGE recruiting weekend. Texas needs to play well.

Not sure I understand this
ATH, Daniel Brooks, Port Lavaca Calhoun – commited to OU. Brooks attending the RRR as a guest of the Longhorns surprised me. Brooks is said to be getting firmer in his commitment to OU.
What’s the point having an OU verbal sitting in the middle of the visiting recruits?
Yeah it’s hard to figure. If Brooks makes it to the game, I think Texas will continue to pursue him. It might be good to get Brooks around our commits so they can work on him. He doesn’t seem like the kind of kid that would be a negative influence.
Honestly, I think Texas should move on from Brooks, and might have already if they offered Daje Johnson.

"Daniel...This is Connor."
“Connor…This Daniel”
Let Connor do his work.
Hey Peanut Gallery, where will Andrus Peat be?
You have been issued a warning.
graphic and completely out-of-context lynching photos are completely out-of-bounds

Good question. I haven’t heard anything on Peat possibly coming to the OU Game. The good news is that he cancelled his visit to Nebraska. The timing is funny because Nebraska got blown out last weekend.

The home team every season
gets to host the recruits. So some of these kids could be at the RRR primarily to see OU or could be there primarily to see Texas. Hard to tell just from their attendance.

Add 2013 Lake Highlands OT / DT Kent Perkins to the list
I really like Perkins. He’s big on Texas, but TAMU is giving him something to think about because they’re recruiting him as a DL. I think Texas wins out.

Watch the film. Oliver comes from a similar background. He’s not a Shipley, but he’s a damn good player.

Skyline’s Ced Collins kept Oliver quiet last night, but Skyline is much, much better than Jesuit. Skyline keyed on Oliver all night, and Collins could be the best sophomore corner in the country. Very tough match up for Oliver.

Yesterday
Randy Rodgers left Dallas Jesuit saying that he thought Oliver might be the most complete player in the 2013 class. When I saw him at 7on7 this summer, I commented to GigEm247’s Taylor Hamm that I thought Oliver could pass for a Shipley with his overall refinement. The big difference between Oliver and the Shipleys is that he’s taller and perhaps further along physically than they were at the same time. High praise, all of it, and I think it’s warranted. Kid is really a special talent.

I have a gut feeling on Oliver. I’m not saying Texas will land him, but I think we have a much better shot than most people think.

Me too.
Heard positive things about his opening while I was in College Station.

Nice. I just feel like if Oliver was sure about TAMU, he would have already pulled the trigger. I think some of his friends at Jesuit are definitely helping Texas. Jake has mentioned a close friend that he regularly attends Texas games with in several interviews.

Losing Oliver to Aggie
Would be crushing. My favorite in-state WR recruit since I’ve started heavily following football recruiting. Silky smooth WR.

Dorial Green - Beckham News
Per Matt Schoch of the Springfield (MO) News- Leader, DGB will play in the Army All American Bowl. Texas has some recruits in game, but Under Armour Game in Orlando was preferable. Texas has 10+ recruits playing in the UA Game, including lead recruiter Connor Brewer.

Cayleb should be there
I’m pretty sure he confirmed that he’ll be in Dallas on his twitter page.
I love that we're fighting the good fight with Edwards
Proud of our staff for doing that. Impossible not to get excited about the OL and DT depth in next year’s class. WR and QB are really stacked as well. I’ll be viewing film on some of the new LBs you mentioned shortly.

Please pardon my ignorance
And I know you’ve probably been asked this question a hundred or more times, but what is the story with Mario Edwards? I thought he was practically signed, sealed and delivered to Tallahassee. I’ve seen bits and pieces over the last month hinting at the fact that he has either wavered on that commitment and is considering his options, or has completely backed out and thrown his recruitment wide open. Or is there a third scenario, in which news of his commitment to FSU was inaccurate all along?
Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others.

According to ESPN Recruiting
He says he’s committed to FSU, but is looking around. From the article, it sounds like more of the first scenario that you mentioned. I read on another board where there was a mention of an interview that his father gave saying that Mario Jr. was wavering due to the distance and a desire to have friends/family see him play more often. I never saw the actual interview, so I don’t know the context of that quote. Maybe somebody else can help with that.
DGB
does anybody know of any insight on how he liked his visits that he has gone on? just curious if there was a university that didn’t meet his expectations.
Haven't heard anything like that
He seems like a pretty quiet guy who doesn’t like to talk publicly.

I've read they're playing it close to the vest
Much like the Jackson Jeffcoat recruitment. The family seems very protective (in a good way).
Connor Brewer and Alex De La Torre will be at the Skyline / Jesuit game
Sounds like a Texas commit party tonight. I’ll be on the look out for them. I’m going to attempt to get the game early to see who’s talking to who before the game. I’d like to see the Texas commits chatting up Jake Oliver, J.J. Gustafson and Cedric Collins.

BON Citizens
I won’t be posting a high school football preview this afternoon because it’s OU Week and I need to get out to the Dallas Jesuit campus. I might throw up a thread later tonight to recap all the Friday Night Lights action.

BFLT saying
that 2014 Skyline CB Cedric Collins is giving Jake Oliver some trouble tonight. Collins is a guy who is already on the radar and could be one of the top 2014 cornerbacks in the state, if not in the country. One to watch.

Collins shut Oliver down. He wasn’t thrown at much, but when he was Ced kept Oliver away from the football.

Also,
it looks like Austin High could pick up the school’s first win this season against Akins tonight. Cayleb Jones caught a 54-yard touchdown pass from his lil bro.

J-Gray at halftime:
12 carries for 129 and two touchdowns rushing (including a 73-yard touchdown run), and 2 catches for 55 yards and another touchdown through the air. In other words, an average effort.

I shouldn't be surprised by his stats anymore
But Damn! that kids good. That’s just not fair.
5 – 4A isn’t a very strong district, but Gray would put up numbers in any district.

Houston area talent
Forgive my ignorance as I am just beginning to follow high school recruiting. Why is there so many DFW recruits? Is it just this list, or is that where the most talent is? Is there another reason? Sorry for so many questions, maybe this needs to be saved for Sundays with Bill. One last question; if I were to attend a high school game around Northwest Houston next Friday, which one would you pick?
I don't understand "t-sip" as an insult. I like drinking tea, and when is being classy a bad thing?
I’d go see Cy Ranch play to see Keith Ford or I’d go see Cy Falls. Cy Falls is loaded. Lots of talent.

Unless Houston area recruits play on Thursday night or have a bye week the week of OU, it’s a very tough trip to make. It’s a travel thing, not a Metroplex recruits preference thing.

Thanks for the info
I will definitely be checking out one of those games. I live in between both school districts. Always appreciate your fountain of info Bill.
