Unless I am mistaken about the sequence of events,

this is a story for which Texas should be commended.

As I read it, the sequence of significant events goes like this:
     - Texas establishes a contract with a legitimate recruiting service. That contract has a specific duration.
     - Texas learns of legitimate info which implicates one employee of the business under contract.
     - Texas notifies the NCAA of the incident.
     - Texas honors the legal contract.

Now consider what would probably have happened if Texas had chosen to attempt to not pay Elite Recruiting because of the actions of one of their employees.
     - Elite Recruiting would have surely sued Texas.
     - When the damning information eventually surfaced about Lyles’ malfeasance, he would have had the ready-made smoke screen of pending litigation. In other words, once he got in trouble, he would have been able to easily shape perceptions in the public eye that the charges against him were generated by Texas simply because of the contract dispute with Elite.

Agreed on all counts

Of course, I read the headline and went, “Oh sh%$!”

OTL: Texas paid Lyles’ service despite red flag

The headline is VERY misleading in the way it was written. Upon first glance it seems that Texas paid for “Lyles’ service”, but after reading we paid for a recruiting service, much like any other school. Once we found out about the implications of Lyles, we notified NCAA and stopped.

Very commendable for Applewhite.

Dont forget the Major helped to out Lyles

and made sure UT stayed clear of anything he was involved in.

Nothing to see here, ladies and gentlement.

Move along.
