Sundays with Bill, The Lost Weekend in Mizzou
Most lost weekends in Missouri usually originate in Branson, Missouri and involve some combination of the Andy Williams Show and Ann Margret or Yakov Smirnoff. Texas' lost weekend occurred on a dreary November morning at the J School Capital of the World.
Talking points:
*The Missouri Game: I'll share some venting thoughts. Let's try to limit this to the first couple hours, but have at it.
* Looking ahead to the Super Recruiting weekend and oh yeah, Kansas State, visitors galore including DGB, the JUCO train heads west, The Colbert Report, Daje Johnson will make it 4 straight Texas home games, and possibly the outstanding Plan B at WR.
* Texas Hoops, the Horns tip off at 6 pm on the LHN against Boston U. Can Texas make the Tourney?
I'll be here at 5 pm on the nose, fire away.

Farout Field Turf
Bill,
First, thanks for your excellent work each week. I really enjoy this feature. My wife and I were at the game in Columbia yesterday. With Fozzy and Henry Josey suffering injuries yesterday, do you think the turf was to blame?
by Horns Up in St Louis on Nov 13, 2011 4:42 PM CST reply actions
I was going to ask the same thing. Samantha Steel kept commenting on how bad it was.
If a man is alone in the woods and he speaks, if no one hears him,,is he still wrong?
I probably sound like a douche for saying this and i hate seeing players get hit with any kind of injuries, but it really is justice for Missouri have bad field turf and their star RB goes down. Hopefully they cut that crap out and have a better field for the players sake
I don't know about karma....
…but hopefully Mizzou finally learns from the unfortunate lessons of Saturday and does the right thing by the athletes that go out there for a few special Saturdays every year all for our enjoyment. When you know your field is a disaster you have an obligation to fix it. What we saw Saturday was borderline negligence. Shame on the administration.
Hey Kevin
Can you shoot me an email please. I have a question for you. eric_benavides32@hotmail.com Thanks!
Some of my friends there...
said the turf looked terrible. I have always wondered because they are the one field that always looks crummy no matter what in the Big 12.
It looked like a pretty bad track up there at Mizzou
It looked like Astroturf, or poor quality Field Turf. I’ll have some further thoughts later.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:04 PM CST up reply actions
I know I am a day late and dollar short on this
but the turf at Mizzou is the exact same as is installed at the Texas stadium. It was installed in 2003 (yours was put in in ’09, I believe) and has a life of 8-10 years, with most lasting much longer.
That puts the Mizzou turf in the short end of the lifespan ending. The man who runs the facilities has mentioned that it has worn a bit faster than expected but only in the white lines around the field. It is supposedly being replaced this off-season.
OSU didn’t have a problem handing it to Mizzou on it, Iowa state had no problems and neither did Miami Ohio or Western Illinois. You are the only team this year to complain about it. I guess there is always a reason for a loss though…
You are also short sided on this
Two players blew out a combined 4 or 5 knee ligaments on Saturday on your “turf.” You don’t see that very often, but it was probably unrelated to playing on what looked like an old rug.
Also, is it possible that after playing ISU, Miami(OH) and Wester Illinois on your “turf” that it might be in worse shape than it was when those games were played? And that it will get progressively worse as more games are played on it?
No one said it’s why we lost. But your field sucks and might have influenced two season ending injuries.

Geez, good question
Shipley can run it if healthy. I think M. Thompson is at defese for good, for better or worse. Miles O might be able to run it. Both the candidates are freshman so it’s less than ideal.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:06 PM CST up reply actions
Needs to be a running back
Ship isn’t explosive enough. Miles is too lanky. Needs to be an explosive runner. The play is kind of like a sprint draw except the jet sweeper is doing the sprinting.
Another I wish Johnathan Gray was at Texas right now moment
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 6:54 PM CST up reply actions
Bill, you've had chances to watch Gray in person
You being from Dallas and he Aledo.
I have as well, and I’m old enough to remember some pretty damned good rb’s in my lifetime, but I have never seen one like Gray.
I know I have been gushing over him but that’s because he is just THAT good!
My prediction – He will be an all american by the end of his soph season.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Gray is so good that he will start stealing carries from Bergeron and Brown, by next season. Think about that.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 8:27 PM CST up reply actions
This is a good thing, but it is a concern
I’ve asked this before. You can’t play three running backs all of the time unless you are runnning the ’Bone. .Who is going to ride the bench when Gray arrives?
How can you sit a kid (Gray) who has a 50-50 chance to take it to the house every time he touches the ball?
How do you sit Brown? Or Bergeron?
Also, unless Ash has a major turn-around, we are going to have to be primarily a running team in order to minimize Ash’s weakness in pass touch.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
If we’re running it 50+ times a game, the carries will be there. Bergeron is going to have to give us snaps at fullback and H back next year also. I think it’ll work.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 8:39 PM CST up reply actions
But, you see, that is the catch
Against TTU, the running backs (Bergeron, Whittaker and Hills) only carried the ball 44 times. And this when we ran 85% of the time. I’m not counting the carries by Ash and the WR’s.
The problem in football is, you can’t run a new RB into the game on every play – it just doesn’t work that way. Therefore, it precludes that most likely the bulk of the carries have to be between TWO RB’s.
So, it figures then that ONE of our backs will probably get no more than 5-7 carries per game.
And this begs the question…….
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Gray doesn’t want to carry it 20+ times a game. He will if he has to, but he’s coming to Texas to play with Malcolm Brown.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 8:51 PM CST up reply actions
True, that was my understanding as well, but then....
…..the Bergeron question raised it’s ugly head!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Different skill sets. Honestly, I wouldn’t worry about it. None of these guys are the type of players that are going to kick dirt because they didn’t get 25 carries.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 8:54 PM CST up reply actions
Oh, I don;t think there will any sulking either.
However, it strikes me that Bergeron is the type of back you want carrying 20+ times – pound the defense, as it were
.
Brown can do this as well and seems like a 20+ carry type of back that can pound and break for yds.
Gray, won’t be carrying that much, but you sure as hell don’t want to limit him to 5-7 touches either. Like I said, he is good enough to make all american as a junior.
Harsin is going to have to be really inventive next year and, like I said, this is a good thing.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Gray's health
While Gray has been healthy during the season, he’s needed surgery on his shoulder a time or two … It’s very possible we could be seeing him in street clothes. Otherwise, he would be ther perfect fit next year.
by Inveigled&Foozled on Nov 14, 2011 8:02 AM CST up reply actions
Don't want Shipley running it
Can’t break tackles well enough, change direction well enough, and no need to risk his health outside of a WR play or a speed end around where he can just run out of bounds.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
Are we sure we need a wildcat package?
The usual modus operandi for running the wildcat is you do it if you’ve got a transcendent athlete you want to get the ball into the hands of as often as possible. If you don’t have such a player, you don’t run the wildcat. Missouri, for example, ran it back when they had Maclin but hasn’t used it much since, since they just don’t have the playmakers. Until one of the first three stringed running backs or Shipley get healthy, I don’t think a wildcat option will be more effective than a standard look in pretty much any situation.
Really helps
Give the defense a different look and keep them off balance. Also gives Monroe a chance to shine on sweeps where he’s not necessarily the main focus of the defense. Finally, I like its efficacy in the redzone. But yeah, probably not going to be a staple again until next year when Gray will most likely run it.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
The Wildcat was highly effective in the redzone with Fozzy. Not sure it will be the same until Gray is running it.

Thinking on our injuries,,what are the odds we get ANY of them back by Saturday?
If a man is alone in the woods and he speaks, if no one hears him,,is he still wrong?
It'd be heart breaking if Mean Joe and Malcolm aren't able to play on Saturday
I hope at the very least that Mack gives us a honest injury report, which he probably won’t. I say watch it with your own eyes if you can. Practices air on Tuesday and Wednesday on the LHN. I don’t trust the practice reports from the media outlets at this point.

Moore is listed at Brandon Moore on the EMCC Football website. I’ll make a note. I’ll call with how he’s listed in their media guide.
He’s a massive human being. 6’7’’ 330 pounds.

Fozzy and Recruiting
Any info about the extent of Fozzy’s injury yet? Looked bad because his knee buckled more than I have seen in that kind of injury in a while? Also wondering if the past S&C program is a cause for these injuries (seeing as Shipley 1.0, Charles, and now Foz have all had knee injuries)?
Also, any new news on the recruiting front? Still getting mixed signals from DBG and Raulerson.
Injuries are actually down this year
I don’t think the S & C Program is to blame. Guys get dinged during the season, unfortunately, it’s been very key guys.
The time table for a MCL strain is 2-3 weeks. So Shipley could be back. Turf toes are notoriously frustrating injuries. Mean Joe’s hamstring could really be anything. My guess is that’s a strain. All of them could or could not play on Saturday. Texas will have a little more flexibility because they don’t have to make decisions to get the roster to 70 for the travel squad.

Once again - have you heard what the latest is on DGB?
If ever a team needed a kid like him, it is us. Our currant crop of receivers (Shipley & Davis) are good, but we need the game breaker.
You think if we gave the tower to him we could sign him?
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
The latest
Hilcrest got bounced out of the playoff by a very good team. DGB’s senior season is done. The Beckhams have been playing their visits for awhile. The plan is to make an official visit to Texas this weekend and on the 26th to Auburn. Not much more is known. I agree, Texas can sell playing time and need to DGB.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:13 PM CST up reply actions
whats this
outstanding plan b at receiver you speak of?
Marcus Johnson
I should have clarified. Johnson is low 4.4 guy and is 6’1." Outstanding player who had an excellent senior year. I think he’s a take regardless of what DGB does, but Texas could be waiting out DGB first. They should have a pretty good idea of where they sit with both after this weekend. I think Johnson flips if Texas offers. His quotes about Texas have been overwhelming positive.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:26 PM CST up reply actions
whats the comparison with Johnson?
who is he currently committed to?
Johnson is committed to Tech
The Red Raiders got on him pretty early before he started to get a lot of attention. I need to watch more film of him before I can make a comparison. He’s fast, he’s got good size and hands. That’ll work.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:32 PM CST up reply actions
Quick thoughts on Johnson
He doesn’t get walked down, but I would like to see his 40 time match his playing speed.
Excellent leaper. Elite at catching jump balls.
Most importantly, Johnson makes good adjustments on poorly thrown balls. Could be very important with Texas’ current QB play.

Clear Springs is playing a 1 pm playoff game on Saturday. Still going to make it to the KSU game in Austin?

Doubtful
Game would end around 3:30 or 4pm, 2.5 hour drive from the Clear Lake area to Austin, not to mention the traffic around downtown pregame, which would probably put you in the stands around 7-730, or approximately the 3:00 minute mark of the 2nd quarter.

See above
Again don’t trust the injury reports. Mack has fooled us the past 2 weeks. I’ll believe it when I see them actually playing.
K State is going to be tough, but if Texas can take Kline out of the game, K State doesn’t have much of an offense. Stop Kline, run the football and we should compete.
Baylor is all over the place, as is TAMU. It all depends on health.

so you think Malcolm for KSU Joe and Shipley for TAMU?
that sounds good at least we have them back to whip the farmers. is it safe to say A&M that A&M is the biggest game left on the schedule in terms of how good a win it could be for morale?

Texas has pride and bowl positioning to play for, and little else. TAMU is pride game. Need to get to 9 wins before we can start talking about the Cotton Bowl.

70% is too high even if those three and Fozzy were all 100% healthy.

I hesitant to put them all back on the field for TAMU, but they’ll be chomping at the bit to play against the Aggies, an in the last home game of the season.

Brown can play with turf toe - at about 70%
Shipley with a knee strain will be constrained with a brace – not good for cutting to open.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Would a 6-6 season be seen as a failure or a success of sorts
this year? I say we get at least 7 wins or we’ve failed to take a meaningful step forward, as defined by success with the program. You could spin it a bit differently, but…
I thought we could achieve 8 wins, but am getting a bit dubious of that rung given the untimely injuries to the top 4 offensive skill players.
What do you think, Bill?
I don’t know how it happens, but I think we could win 1 of our last 3 without Malcolm or Mean Joe. I don’t think that’ll happen. I’d be happy if Texas went 2-1 or better to close the season.

JUCO Thoughts
Texas should have 3 JUCO players visit this weekend. Think about that. From refusing to recruit JUCO players to hosting 3 on official visits in the same weekend. Thankfully, a culture change at Texas.
All three can help Texas immediately and hold offers from Texas per at least on recruiting site. Autry hold a Texas offer per Rivals. HornsNation says Moore has a Texas offer, and it has been universally reported that Hawkins holds a Texas offer.
Hawkins and Autry are the biggest needs, but you take Moore. He could replace Randall.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:23 PM CST reply actions
do you think
this is more of a function of immediate need or needing to get guys to fill spots since we’re all (is the staff?) a little down on landing some of these blue chippers (dgb, collins, peat, armstead, etc)
A little bit of both. Hell, the in state targets at OT could be tough pulls. Brantley seems all OSU right now.
Texas MUST take another OT, and they will. Hawkins would be an outstanding get.
Armstead might visit. Collins will be at Banquet Weekend. DGB is coming this weekend. At least they’re visiting is the way I look at it.

KSU Game
How do you think our defensive personnel matchup with KSU’s offense? Other than stopping Klein (and how do we do that), what’re the defensive keys to our next game?
I think Texas should put a spy on Kline, probably Vacarro, and make him beat us with his arm. He’s a runner first. None of the K State backs scare me.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:29 PM CST up reply actions
K State is a solid team that finds ways to win
Snyder deserves a lot of credit. That finding a way to win usually comes from the coach. They’re solid. Kline and Brown (LB) are the only players that jump out at me. Brown is going to be a big problem. He doesn’t make mistakes and always makes his tackle.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 5:36 PM CST up reply actions
Not really
They’re very fundamentally sound. Texas must out physical them to win.
Hell I’d like to see the trick plays come back. Texas has been pretty vanilla since OU.

yea why is that?
i understand why we didnt run any trick plays against TTU or KU but why were so vanilla against Mizzou why didnt we try a few trick plays? i only counted one which was the Statue of Liberty that got stuffed because a lineman missed his block

I think they’re slow developing plays and that’s why they’ve been shelved. Texas isn’t at a level yet where they can run the trick plays as smoothly as Boise State.

Bill, it's about time someone said this because it is the flat truth!
We have only had a year to implement Harsins offense. My God, when the kids finally understand everything and with the talent we will have next year, we will be a humongous LOAD for the rest of the Big XII.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
It's a quarterback driven league
Texas must get better quarterback play, or we’re going to have some inconsistent games.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 8:43 PM CST up reply actions
For now
If Texas has a nasty defense and a running game that averages 275 yds next yr . You may see people rethink their philosophy. Perhaps it is time for the Big 12 to get away from the Mouse Davis offenses that I can not stand. Take a look at what KSU is doing with half the talent the big boys have with their Fred Flinstone offense
I agree Texas is moving to more of an SEC style of team
But we’re more interested in having the balance of a Luck-led Stanford team or a Moore-led BSU team than the ineptitude at QB that LSU and Bama have. Yeah 275 yards a game is fantastic, but there will be times when it’ll just not be working that day, the other team will be especially good against the run, or we’ll get down early due to TOs or big plays when we’ll need at least some decency in the passing game.
Great offenses often shoot for 500 YPG. I think a 275/225 run/pass split would be Mack’s dream. I also believe we have a chance to have a very good defense next year. Maybe not “great,” but very, very good with a chance to be great depending on the DTs and who steps up next to Edmond at LB.

QB play
We don’t need the next Elway. We need a guy that can hit open receivers and not miss his deep throws. Competent is the word.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 9:11 PM CST up reply actions
Inept QB
Nobody wants that. Every fan wants a great QB. I am simply saying that we can build a team that can win with solid QB numbers that can change the league. I think people are seeing what a QB centric offense looks like when you miss on a couple QBs. I am not saying Ash is a miss way too early at this pt to make that determination. The beauty of Saban’s style is that they can compete on a very high level with mediocre QBs. Given the talent that Texas can attract, we should never be beholden to one position.
Agreed +1

Anything new on Corey Coleman?
Last I heard he was still solid to Baylor. I’d love to take Colbert and Coleman from the Bears.
Coleman
I was surprised that Coleman didn’t get an offer last week. It might take a visit first. For an offer to be promised, I think Akina is going to have to sign off on Coleman as a DB. Texas could then offer Corey as an ATH. Coleman’ senior season is over, but he’s the starting point guard on his high school basketball team. Visits will have to be worked around basketball. Coleman has said that he wants to visit OU and Cal, so he’s looking around.

yesterday you said you hoped he might be able to be a pj tucker sort of player? haven’t youtubed him yet, assuming you’ve seen a little bit of him. does he have that sort of midrange game? moves?
pj’s biggest strength, imo, was his ability to use his body against defenders in a way that made him incredibly awkward to defend. sort of a dumpy, barkley kind of game. does he have some of that in him?
Bond - PJ comparisons
Come from Bond’s ability to rebound and clean up around the rim. Hopefully, Bond can be garage man around the basket. Players that can rebound and score without getting the ball are very valuable.
I think Bond is more fluid athlete, a better leaper, but PJ is better basketball player. The mid range game is something that Bond will have to develop. I’d be surprised if he started stepping back and taking threes.

Torn ACL
Per longhorn network: torn ACL and something else I missed. Out for season. Going to miss him. He was having such a great seasonn
Tough break
The timing couldn’t be worse. Fozzy is going to be hard pressed to make it back before the NFL season.

make it back before the NFL season starts
It’s going to be very difficult for Fozzy to make a NFL team next year.

Any word on the Diaz/Ole Miss rumors?
That source wasn’t exactly credible.
I think it’s bullshit. Don’t like to curse, but the rumor deserves it.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 6:05 PM CST up reply actions
Even if it's true - so what?
Good coaches will always be pursued and this will probably happen every year. It’s just part of the game.
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Diaz
I can’t see him leaving. He stayed on yr at MSu. It would not look good to put in another 1 yr and leave. I think he will stay the 3 yrs that Mack asks of assistants. At that pt he is gone. Just to good to sit around and wait. Ole Miss does not have the cache to leave for this early. If UCLA came calling that is another story. I think Harsin and Diaz stay until they get a solid program offer, no need to burn a bridge like Texas on a job that has killed careers
Manny is a Miami guy
That job isn’t open obviously, but something opened up in his home state, I’d be mildly concerned.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 6:39 PM CST up reply actions
Job openings?
Should we be nervous this year again or will we have this same coaching staff again next year
It'll be up to Manny, Major and Bryan
They won’t get offered top 15 jobs, but they might get offered BCS conference jobs. They’re well paid at Texas and have autonomy. Not sure what else they could ask for.

Edmond
I watched the game, but I did not get a chance to focus on his play. He was thrown into the fire and given the way th defense played I assume he held his own. Wondering what you thought of his performance and any word on Keenan
Robinson had a cast on his hand
If Christian Scott can play through a dislocated wrist, Robinson should be able to play with a broken thumb. We’ll see. Edmond held his own.

Edmond
Edmond had a big fill on the goaline stop by Texas after the blocked punt. Steve won’t get pushed around out there, and has an innate ability to play MLB. He should be a good one at Texas for the next 3 years.

Edmond
I would not be upset if Edmond, Acho, and Robinson were the LBs vs KSU.
Probably our 3 best linebackers right now
Jordan hasn’t been right physically this season. He’s had some good moments though.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 6:44 PM CST up reply actions
Think that combination
Would do very well against KSU’s offense. Robinson would have more room to move. Acho has just been amazing lately. Edmond will stuff the middle of the field.

You had to bring it up
Scott and Gideon both were responsible for big plays. I think it is simple athletic limitations. They work hard and give it their all. Is there any talk of bringing the youth movement to safety. One thing to sit youth for randle, Keenan, and acho quite another for Gideon and scott
Would like to see it
Probably not gonna happen. I’m just hoping Phillips gets fully healthy right now to take back Scott’s spot.

Latest projection for Texas bowl game
Not sure I really want to see this game per SI and Mandel:
Dec. 29 Alamo: Oregon (Pac-12 No. 2) vs. Texas (Big 12 No. 3)

Doesnt matter
The extra practices are far more important than the actual game
Agree with this 100%!!!!!
Huge for this team’s development to be bowl eligible. It is an extra spring practice. More reps and development for our young players is far more important than our season record or the outcome of the bowl game.
As opposed to last season when I didn’t want the team to have one more practice with the old staff……
I could live with that
I’ll probably go if Texas is in the Cotton Bowl. San Antonio is a tough drive, and their airport is nowhere near the Alamo Dome.

cotton bowl
Not sure I could go. My son still wakes up in cold sweats because of the last time I took him there. He was just too young to witness that kind of carnage
by codaxx on Nov 13, 2011 6:48 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Disagreed
The airport is a quick 10 to 12 minutes from downtown barring something bad. U.S. 281 is basically a race track running from the airport to the Alamo Dome. If you still live in the Lake Travis area, it’s a simple drive, maybe 2 hours if you time it right.
by Inveigled&Foozled on Nov 14, 2011 8:20 AM CST up reply actions
Are you sure about that?
Google maps says it’s 9.6 miles and a 13 minute drive.

Is this a real prediction?
I’m confused. Oregon is a BCS lock at this point.

Why aren't we looking for another running back for next year
Looks as if we will still be light on RB’s next year and heavy on receivers. Are we still recruiting for the old offence?
by longhorn charlie on Nov 13, 2011 7:03 PM CST reply actions
Daje Johnson is being recruited as a utility back, yet to be offered
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 7:39 PM CST up reply actions
Could he function as the primary back if the big 3 are injured?
Since we don’t seem to be comfortable putting DJ in the primary role, I wondered if Daje would be limited also.
by longhorn charlie on Nov 13, 2011 7:48 PM CST up reply actions
Daje is closer to DJ than Malcolm. He’s not a primary back, but he is a well built kid. I think he could handle a larger work load than DJ.

rb
Its going to be real hard to bring in an every down back this year. Word is out on bergeron and brown. Have the #1 rb recruit coming in this yrs class. In fact I would not be surprised if next years crop of RBs aviods Texas
by codaxx on Nov 13, 2011 7:59 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Playing behind Bergeron, Brown and Gray will be a tough sell to most blue chip backs. If Keith Ford is the guy, that’s going to be a difficult recruitment. Is he a kid that’s not afraid of a depth chart? Good thing Major is probably our best recruiter.
Honestly, I think Texas might have to take a project that understands he’s going to redshirt. Not sure how involved Harsin was in Doug Martin’s recruitment, but he and Major might have to go out find a diamond in the rough for the 2013 running back.

Diamond in the rough
So who in this yrs class do you see as a under-rated signing. The guy that surprises the he’ll out of us, positively. My bet is on Hughes, but your opinion is probably a lot more educated
Hughes is a damn good guess. Bluiett seems to be the under the radar guy that keeps popping up. Caleb could 3 positions at a very high level for Texas (LB, DE and TE).
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 9:04 PM CST up reply actions
There's a lot of good evaluations in this class
There could be a couple diamonds in the rough, Ridgeway, Bluiett, Hughes, Norman, Boyette, and Duke Thomas are all possibilities.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 13, 2011 9:07 PM CST up reply actions
Come on
You can’t pick 20% of the class. No politics here. Give me one guy
Bluiett
goes to my school. Will make a great edge rusher I hope. Great speed, but needs to add some weight. Lanky.

QB's in 2012
Does Case still transfer? Do we have a full on open qb competition next year? For some reason I find Overstreet really exciting being the dual threa QB – with some work, could he be a good enough passer to ever start at UT?
On another note – do you know who in the 2012 class will be graduating early and joining the team in the spring?
Wikipedia that shit - don't be ignorant...
I’ll have to do some research on this. Off the top of my head: Brewer and Hughes for sure.

Quarterback getting too much blame for passing game
Ash took a step back vs MO, but so did the offensive line. Pass blocking was poor. Without Shipley receivers are mediocre and play calling was totally predictable. I believe we tried to pass on every third down except one. Had success early, but after Fozzy’s injury, MO knew what was coming and laid their ears back. Harsin did not have a good game calling plays.
by longhorn charlie on Nov 13, 2011 9:33 PM CST reply actions
Meant to add...
Mack’s refusal to name Ash the starter, the continued harping that we can’t have turnovers, and pulling him from games when the going is rough can’t be helping his confidence. Turnovers are part of the game. I would rather see a turnover trying to make a play than a pass poorly thrown to ensure that it can’t be intercepted. I’d like to see Ash named the starter for the rest of the year, and the coaches telling him to go make plays so we can see what his potential is. I think he is playing like he will get pulled if he makes a mistake, and it prevents him being successful against better teams. As others have said, the failure to use the Kansas and Tech games to develop Ash’s passing really came back to bite us Saturday.
by longhorn charlie on Nov 13, 2011 10:52 PM CST up reply actions
Ash
I think Ash took a step back in production, but not mentally. I watched on television, so I could not see all the routes. A lot of it might have been trying far too many low percentage passes exacerbated by 20+ mph wins. I was happy to see he did not make the stupid pass or take a bad sack. The int was just trying to make a play late in the half, which i do not mind. Cost us nothing. I am grasping at straws, but given the production it is hard to point to a silver lining.
i think that hit he took after scrambling late in the game shows us all that he has the heart and desire to win at any cost
thats always a good thing to see from your young Freshman QB
formerly "Horns102591"
He didn't take a hit. He gave a hit.
That is a play his teammates will remember when it’s time for him to rally them to victory someday. Major leadership points gained, there.
Wish we had seen a bit more.
I thought Ash should have run a few times more. Only because Mizzou expected us to keep throwing it deep. Send those receivers out, make a read … if covered, then tuck and run it. Keep the “D” guessing what you’re going to do. We got too predictable. I think Harsin is still developing too … IMO
by Inveigled&Foozled on Nov 14, 2011 8:25 AM CST up reply actions
hard to presume
We all are asking why did Ash or McCoy go to short or intermediate throws, but I highly doubt the plays were designed with all fly patterns. I am willing to bet that there was always another shorter option. Question is were they open? Did Qbs make the right read? In defense of the QBs most of the deep throws were to WRs that were open or one on one. Those were not inherently bad decisions, unless there were wide open wrs elsewhere. Without the coaches tapes it is hard to figure out if it was a flaw in play calling or a flaw in execution
True but ...
I think Ash should have tucked and ran a few more … Either by design or by decision. He’s got great legs, and we know he can run it. If the routes are designed properly, you can create running lanes for him by clearing space. Essentially a draw play. I think that’s an aspect of the offense that could be fleshed out a bit more. Maybe you only call it 3 to 4 times a game, where it’s a designed run but you could implement a read-based run by merely deciding whether he’s facing man or zone coverage (not open and turned their backs! run-run-run!).
by Inveigled&Foozled on Nov 14, 2011 12:38 PM CST up reply actions
I liked all of Ash's decision making too
We did get sunk by not being able to hit those receivers deep.
I lost count of how many deep throws our QB’s missed.
Oline
I am of course sick about the Foz monster. I am in love with our defense. Hoping against hope for Shipley, Brown and Joe to get back. Not yet as down as some about Ash (but not yet as excited as some others either).
It is the OLine that still scares me. Mo had a good but not world beater defensive front. We seemed to get it handed to us pretty badly in that match. More than we need another rb, or maybe even more than we need a better young QB. We NEED improvement in that offensive line. Soon. real soon. By Thanksgiving, please Lord. Give me lumps of coal for Christmas but a good oline against aggie. Please
