I was reflecting on the quarterback situation after Saturdays disaster. We have freshman Ash, backed up by sophomore McCoy. We then have Brewer and Understreet coming in as freshmen. So next September we are going to be looking at one of these as our starting QB next year.
Do we think one of the new freshmen will get the nod....probably not. As good a pocket passer as Brewer is and as fast (4.5) and dual threat as Overstreet is, they will most assuredly be riding the pine as we progress through the OOC part of our schedule (Wyoming, New Mexico, & Mississippi). Otherwise we will be sitting here a year from now saying "well he's just a freshman", "The game is still too fast ....." "He needs to learn those reads"...etc etc
So that leaves us with Ash and McCoy. Does anybody think Case is going to overcome his horrible mechanics and take over? As much as I wanted Case to win the job....the intangibles he has, have not proven to be enough, and most probably can't propel him into the starters slot.
So that leaves David Ash. And the key to David Ash's (or any QB) is Stacey Searles. Any defensive front with a pulse we faced this year was all over our QB. And we lost every game.....OU,OSU, & Missouri. Our O Line has not improved in its pass protection nearly as much as the run blocking.
I think Ash can develop into the quarterback we want, but I'm not totally sold on Ash being the long term solution. The reads and awareness will come...the accuracy is another question. Again, Searles is key here.
So after those 3 cupcake OOC games, we have Iowa State, OU and OSU again.
Who do you think will be callin' the signals by OSU ?
