Not sure in what context this quote was from. But...maybe we seeing

the beginning of some disruptiveness to team cohesion.

Really?!?

“I think with David Ash we just couldn’t get things rolling,” Irby said.

Is this calling out specific teammates?? Or stating the obvious, more like it.

Especially when Harsin states “…McCoy provided a spark…”

by Forty on Nov 20, 2011 1:37 PM CST reply actions

Yes!

Irby put it all on Ash, unfairly. I’m not saying Ash was perfect….but he got no help from his receivers, the running game was non-existent, the play calling lacked either imagination or sense throughout the game, and the refs didn’t help us any. Again, I’m not saying Ash was good, let alone great, but for Irby to put it all on him is absolute nonsense. Let’s look at all of Irby’s film and find the drops, missed blocks, and incorrect routes. I promise they exist, but no one ever mentioned his name to ESPN.

by KevinJ on Nov 20, 2011 1:58 PM CST up reply actions

You won't have much tape to look at for Irby.

Calm down buddy, You don’t know what question was asked to Blain. He didn’t say we lost the game because of David Ash, he said exactly what everyone saw. Its ok if your an Ash fan but don’t kill a true Longhorn when he didn’t do anything wrong.

by Wongworns on Nov 20, 2011 2:09 PM CST up reply actions

Potential questions:
When David Ash was in, the offense didn’t do much of anything, but with Case McCoy, the offense scored on it’s first drive. What was the problem the offense was having when Ash was under center?
With David Ash as QB, the offense has been held scoreless for more than 100 minutes, but when Case McCoy came in the offense scored right away. Why do you think that is?

These can go on and on, but without context, you can’t throw Irby under the bus. He didn’t say “We can’t do anything with Ash at QB.” or “Ash just isn’t the leader that McCoy is.”

To me, it sounds like “I think with David Ash…” is the qualifier to the question that the interviewer is asking. Ease up. Blaine has been nothing but class since coming to Texas and I HIGHLY doubt he’s the type of person to throw anyone under the bus like you’re interpreting.

by GoHorns on Nov 20, 2011 2:40 PM CST up reply actions

To follow that up:

You also don’t know if any of the quote was not printed. What if I told you that Blaine continued:

I think with David Ash we just couldn’t get things rolling. It’s disappointing, too, because Ash has been working so hard with the receivers on their timing and routes and it just hasn’t been working. Ultimately, it’s on all of us because we just couldn’t get the job done.

But hey, the journalist did his job because he got all of us to click on the story.

by GoHorns on Nov 20, 2011 2:43 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly....no need to crucify Irby

Irby is a senior so he is more available to the media. He said nothing wrong. He was truthful and it was one sentence. It was not a global condemnation and as GH just pointed out, we have no idea the rest of the context. I’m sure there is no rift between Irby and Ash, and this post is making a mountain out of a molehill. I’m sure every Longhorn fan would like to see better QB play. So, for a Texas player to make a innocuous comment on the momentum of the QB play is hardly scandalous or disappointing.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

by Wrangler86 on Nov 20, 2011 8:28 PM CST up reply actions

Dude

Ash was awful. I don’t get why some of you fans try sugar coating it. He has thrown 0 touchdowns since Oklahoma and 6 interceptions. Case has yet to throw an int all season.

And Irby was stating the obvious. He scored more on 1 one play than the ash lead offense has in 2 games. You’re saying all that about Ash( no help from anyone?) Imagine what it would’ve been like if Case was the starter, we would’ve won easily instead of struggled. In fact, if Ash doesn’t thrown that 2nd Int ( one of the worse throws i’ve ever seen a QB throw… EVER) Texas probably wins by McCoy, since the defense was playing that dominant, and Case has yet to throw an Interception

by Mclovin1035 on Nov 21, 2011 9:57 AM CST up reply actions

Not that I don't disagree that Ash played awful...
Imagine what it would’ve been like if Case was the starter, we would’ve won easily instead of struggled.

I imagine it would have looked alot more like the wounded duck pass he threw in the endzone in the 4th quarter. Both did not play well. I think people are overlooking that McCoy benefited from a blown coverage, a huge CoJo run, and the Goodwin jet sweep. Everyone is so quick to state that his moxie, his “it” factor, his overall play is what put us in position to win the game, when in fact….no.

Our defense did that. I’m all for “starting” Case Thursday, but we’re still going to see Ash play.

Agreed.

McCoy also did not take advantage of a very short field after the superb Quandre punt return. Yeah, Ash played bad but there’s no way in heck that McCoy would have obviously saved that game.

by robthecob on Nov 21, 2011 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

I don't agree that, with McCoy, we would have won easily.

That KState D has ALWAYS been tough to play against for everyone so you can chalk some of Saturday’s offensive inefficiency up to them. You also have Texas WRs that really are poor at playing the long ball. But, you’re right that Ash has been poor in the passing game. Ash & McCoy should SPLIT TIME EQUALLY. It’s bad for McCoy & the ‘Horns if he never gets game reps and it’s bad for the ‘Horns AND Ash if he gets ALL the game reps. We’re not playing for any titles, at this point in the season. Play ’em both!

by robthecob on Nov 21, 2011 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Ya'll are all ridiculous.

They should split time? Looks like thats what they are going to do, but at this point Ash doesn’t deserve any time at all. The guy doesn’t take care of the ball and has thrown a couple passes no QB in High School should throw much less FBS. Its Division 1 football, its the Big XII. He should go play intramurals, brother.

Unless Ash is strictly change of pace he hurts the team playing. I really don’t get what everyone else is watching? Ash’s 2nd pick( one of the worse throws you’ll ever see from a quarterback at this level)put us down 14, McCoy could’nt have brought us back, but if Ash doesn’t throw that pick, McCoy probably could’ve still thrown a td and lead us to a fg so we’d win 13-10.

Though I can guarantee, if the roles were reversed and Case was the one with the 3:8 td:int ratio, Ya’ll would be calling for ash to be the lone guy. Its alright, Haters gonna hate

by Mclovin1035 on Nov 21, 2011 12:45 PM CST up reply actions

I don't think you're understanding the point

I think we get the fact that you’re a McCoy fan, and also apparently a hyperbole fan. Our team is at its best when we’ve done the dual QB system, as it allows for our QBs to do what they do best. Case can manage his game, and David will run the zone reads, jet sweeps, etc…

McCoy threw 4 passes that were decent, 1 was from a blown coverage. The other 12 passes were not. You can hoot and holler about interceptions all you want. I want points. I want production. I want someone who can move the ball through the air, and ground to keep defenses honest. Case sure as hell isn’t going to run it, that’s why Ash will still play.

I agree

That the split system is a good idea right now. Also takes the pressure off of either QB to carry an offense that has received abysmal WR play and less-than-stellar OL play lately.

Bruthah Mclovin, make up your mind, dude!

Your first point:

“They should split time? … Ash doesn’t deserve any time at all.”
Your second point:
“Unless Ash is strictly change of pace he hurts the team playing.”
You alluded to it yourself. Ash & McCoy splitting time is the best scenario for a change of pace and the best way for the UT offense to be most effective. Both of these green underclassmen QBs are at their best in spot duty and at their worst in taking every rep in the game. I’m a big McCoy fan too but he certainly hasn’t earned all the game reps any more than Ash has. An October day in the Cotton Bowl made sure to point that out to us all.

by robthecob on Nov 22, 2011 10:01 AM CST up reply actions

Do you disagree?

When Ash was QB, was the offense rolling? I’m all for not calling out teammates, but it seems like he’s stating a fact here.

Nothing here!

Irby answered the question the best way. He didn’t put down Ash and Ash will probably never see these comments. If he does see them then it should fuel him as a competitor to get better and put any QB controversy to rest.

by Wongworns on Nov 20, 2011 1:48 PM CST reply actions

These are the questions and answers from the post game...I brought them over from TexasSports.com

TE Blaine Irby
On touchdown catch: It was really something I had been dreaming about for a while. We ran the play perfectly. I think the best thing about it was afterwards when all my teammates came up to me and just started hitting me and hitting me into the wall. It would have felt a lot better if we would have gotten the win.

On the momentum Case McCoy brought: I think with David Ash we just couldn’t get things rolling and that’s happened throughout the year. When you have two great quarterbacks and one isn’t doing so well the other can come in, and that’s what happened.

On what he told David Ash: Whenever he came to the sideline I just told him to calm down and that this is just football. He’s been playing this game his whole life. I told him to try to slow the defense down and not think too much because he was getting a little excited out there. I thought he did well against the defense Kansas State brought, but I just told him to take it easy and calm down. The boys never gave up. We never gave up, and it’s disappointing when it comes down to the wire like that.

by Wongworns on Nov 20, 2011 3:35 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, definitely nothing to see here

I wonder if this KevinJ poster works in sports media? He already has the “MUST OVERREACT, SENSATIONALIZE, AND TAKE QUOTES OUT OF CONTEXT” part down to a science.

by goingforthecorner on Nov 20, 2011 4:53 PM CST up reply actions

Naw.

He’s just defending the Longhorns – as a team. It’s okay to get a little overzealous, once in awhile.

by robthecob on Nov 21, 2011 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

HAHAHAHA

So anyone with a different opinion than you is automatically overreacting or sensationalizing?

I’m sorry I didn’t realize you were implictly right, your majesty…

And as per the “out of context” I read what was printed.

by KevinJ on Nov 20, 2011 9:24 PM CST reply actions

I believe the point

Is that you are expressing disappointment in a player without the full story, which has now been revealed as not a big deal at all.

So disappointed?

Why are you so disappointed in the first place? Are you linked with the program in any way? I don’t understand. We as fans don’t need to project our emotions on to other players. Not healthy.

I wouldn’t call for anyone to put their teammates down, but sometimes you’re given a question and you have to answer it. I’ve been a David Ash guy all season, but he was out of his element on Saturday. David Ash isn’t seeing any trees in any forest. He needs to let the game slow down.

by rhino1514 on Nov 21, 2011 9:07 AM CST reply actions

For Irby's brief quote, the reader was not given the full context.

It wasn’t that big of a deal. If anything, he was saying that Ash wasn’t getting support from the rest of the offense. You can take it both ways.

More interesting to me, though, was Harsin’s comment at the end: “We’re developing two quarterbacks.” As in, “We’re developing two” but only anointing one. McCoy is not getting a fair shake in all of this. Ash has done nothing to deserve ALL of the playing time. If he hadn’t been atrocious vs. Mizzou and KState, McCoy would have never seen the field. In the past 2 games, Ash has had about a dozen deep throws and has not connected on but one and has not even been close on almost all of ‘em. He needs to get better on ’em, Harsin needs to stop calling ’em, or they should stick to a shorter game. Added to that is that Mike Davis, for all his undeniable talent, and other receivers seem to have a real inability to play the deep ball. They simply can’t adjust to it effectively like any other good receiver. With just a little bit of ability, many of the throws could have been caught &/or the DB get called for interference. I’m fine with Ash getting lots of reps but it is obvious that both Ash & McCoy should have been getting equal game reps all season long if we’re trying to “develop two quarterbacks”. Ash & McCoy BOTH play more poorly the longer they’re left in a game. Keeping ’em each playing about 30-40 snaps keeps ’em fresh, gives ’em experience, and motivates the rest of the offense. It also makes it harder on opposing defensive coordinators.

"Added to that is that Mike Davis, for all his undeniable talent, and other receivers seem to have a real inability to play the deep ball. They simply can’t adjust to it effectively like any other good receiver. "

I miss Malcolm Williams….even with his hands of stone. Dropped so many that were perfectly thrown but seemed to have a talent for catching the poorly thrown balls that he should not have been able to. With the way the ball is being thrown deep this year, what a weapon he might have been.

by LonghorninRaiderland on Nov 21, 2011 11:01 AM CST up reply actions

Totally agree.

Malcolm was a super athlete and a great talent. He sure did, seemingly, make a very tough catch for every easy one that he dropped. He would have been a great asset this year as the senior-leader WR and, ya never know, he may have even conquered ‘the dropsies’ finally. Either way, I don’t know what is going on with him right now but I sure hope he catches on with an NFL team where he can, at least, become one of the best special teamers in the entire league. He was probably the best special teamer in the Big 12* for 2 years runnin’.
