Sundays with Bill, Mining for Silver Linings
These chats get a little tougher to do each weekend. Last night was painful. We've spent the last 10 years watching Texas win these types of games. Make no mistake about it, Texas has been fortunate. It all comes back to the quarterback. At this point I would take adequate QB play. Moving forward.
Talking points:
* The K State game: Dominant defense and woeful offense, Texas outgains KSU by almost 200 yards and loses, Texas rushes for almost 200 yards and loses, Texas shuts down Kline and still loses. Yeah you get the point.
* Big recruiting weekend and some potentially huge developments: The Maturation of Brandon Moore, 4 star OT Donald Hawkins gives Texas a 5 star rating, DGB taking in the sights at Texas and enjoying himself, Johnathan Gray plays host and cheerleader, Marcus Johnson drives from Baytown after a playoff game for the possibility of an offer. I'll have a full visitor list.
* Looking ahead to TAMU: A tough challenge to be sure, if Texas were ever to rise up this season and win one as a team, this is it.
* Skyline - DeSoto, I posted some quick thoughts on Twitter today, I'll go more in depth here. Bill meets a Recruitocosm icon.
* Looking for silver linings: The bowl practices, the young pups getting playing time, selling Texas as a place where freshman can play immediately.
Let's get it started. Fire off your chat salvos.

DGB
Any word on how DGB’s visit went? I can’t imagine he was impressed with what he saw on the field, but I hope all the other things we have to offer made an impression.
DGB's visit
By all accounts went very well. The Grays hosted the Beckhams. I can’t think of a better family to represent the University. I wish this was DGB’s last visit, but Texas seems to have done their very best.

Texas is a serious player for DGB
I would have killed for that months ago, and here we are.

Recruitocosm’s The Asset said the coaches felt we led for DGB. I still find that hard to believe, but your reports are encouraging.

Texas’ only shot to land DGB is through relationships with his family. By all accounts, those relationships are very strong.

I think DGB will pull the trigger after he makes all of his official visits. If he skips some of his official visit, it could be a good sign.

Main selling points regarding the actual team
Are you can come in your true freshman year and have a Vince Young type impact at the WR position (yes I know VY redshirted a year) that propels us back to greatness, the BCS, and ultimately the national championship. You are the missing piece to the puzzle, along with Hawkins at RT.

This is obviously in addition to Bill's
Points about the close relationships DGB has, not instead of.

If it weren’t for Coach Wyatt and the Beckhams making a bond with the Mack and Sally Brown. We’re not even talking about DGB right now.

Honestly...
…if I’m DGB, I’d much rather take my talents to play in Arkansas or OU’s offensive juggernauts than our struggling passing game. Sucks to hear, I know.
Hard to disagree with that
Their offensive coaching/passing games is/are top notch.

I'm with bill, here
DGB could by the same token look at OU’s QB play and see he would have one year with Landry Jones and then have a career with what is a complete unknown in Blake Bell. Though not much has been said I think DGB’s comfort level with a school is going to have a lot more to do with his school choice than the on field product.
"I want to be remembered as the guy who gave his all whenever he was on the field."

Yep it’s not all about who your quarterback is. If that was the case, Texas wouldn’t even be in the conversation. DGB is so good, he’ll get noticed.

Any interest in fielding a basketball recruiting question?
If so, what is up with Cameron Ridley? Any word on what is happening?
I am on Twitter @jeffchaley
Ridley
Sounds like he’ll sign with Texas. Ridley reclassifying as a 2013 player has been flatly denied by his camp. The line I keep seeing is that Ridley is putting a couple things in order and then he’ll sign. I don’t know when that will be. I think Texas will get him, but it could take a while. As long as he’s here before school start next fall, I’m good with it.

Watch what Texas does in the winter-spring periods...
…if they start to pick up recruitment of a PF or C like Ricardo Gathers (who decommitted from St. John’s but had Texas amongst his finalists), my guess is that Ridley is headed elsewhere. I think Barnes continues to pursue Devonta Pollard (more a SF) regardless of what Ridley decides.
Right now, Ridley is not reclassing to 2013 (it’s a smokescreen that somehow got picked up by national analysts), but isn’t actively looking at other schools either.
Thoughts on Pollard, Jeff?
I kind of like our chances now that your other team is out of it. I like Poythress even more than I did before he committed to UK, lol.

No read on Pollard right now
I don’t think he’s even thought about recruiting too much. He sounded like a spring guy all the way and just waited to see where everything settled.
I don’t think Kentucky tries terribly hard with him now that Poythress is on board. But Pollard does strike me as a guy that would want to go to a closer school (say, Miss St) and be “the man”. Not sure why, just get that vibe.
Don't take this the wrong way Bill and others
But why would DGB want to play for Texas where we don’t even have a QB that can getter done. I understand he can play right away, but what does that mean when your QB overthrows you or underthrows you.
DGB
I think if Texas lands DGB it’ll be because of the relationships the coaches formed with the Beckhams, not the on the field product. We can only get better at QB is a tough sell, but I hope it’s something the Beckhams aren’t focused on. Texas got them down for an official visit, and that’s certainly something.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 5:24 PM CST up reply actions
Think about Julio Jones
Julio, even though he was from Bama, went there when the Qb play was not all that great and he sign after Nick’s first year when they where bad. The main thing i’m sure Gray was saying how good Brewer is and talk him up. Next is, if it hasn’t happen yet is for Brewer to do his think and have DGB gain confidence in him.
Julio Jones is a good example
Believe me, DGB’ name is written in every NFL GM’s brain right now. They know who he is. He’ll get noticed wherever he plays.

Ag green
Didn’t have a good QB his last yr. Jeffries from South Carolina will be first rnd pick with dreadful QB play. GT has put 2 wrs in the first round running the triple option. If you have talent they will find you. Plus, you would be surprised at how much better out QBs would be if their was first round talent starting at Texas
do you think we can beat aggy?

TAMU Game
I have grave concerns about scoring with Aggie. Texas can not win that type of game. Texas will probably have to keep the Ags under 24 points, if they’re going to win. At least Mean Joe and Malcolm are back.

Texas would need to play mistake free football for that to happen. No long third down conversions, no scores before half, no getting turned around on passes into the endzone. A Manny Diaz defense will play well.

Playing mistake free on defense, and running the football is the only way Texas wins games this year. Giving up just a few big plays on defense will be back breaking because Texas can’t score quickly.

TAMU should be a slight favorite given the game’s location. Texas can win though. Hell we almost beat OSU and KSU this year and those are top 10 -15 teams.

Skyline - Desoto Thoughts
I had the great pleasure of catching a game with Tipsy Gypsie (yes he does look Nick Nolte) and our favorite Red Raider, dedfischer.
- Ra’Shaad Samples is a take. This was his signature game. Coach Samples should package his son’s game film against DeSoto and send to Mack right now. Ra’Shaad absolutely worked LSU Jalen Mills all night long. He consistently got separation and made tough catches against elite competition. Bennie is going to have a heart attack if / when Ra’Shaad reports and mistake him for a towel boy, but the young man can ball out. Insert under 6’ WR comparison here.
- Help is on the way. Thomas Johnson will play early next year. A healthy Johnson can make cuts that only Johnathan Gray will be able to make. He played QB at The Oakridge School in Arlington, and he could do it again at Texas. Say it with me, Wild TJ (yes I know Oversteet could also run the Wildcat.)
- Good luck keeping Peter Jinkens off the field. He would surprised no one if he led Texas in special team tackles next year. Could have a Mykkele Thompson like impact on special teams while growing into a LB. ]
*Dontre Wilson has another gear that no one on that field last night has. Elite speed, and he can get a tough yard when it’s needed. - Bryson Echols had a great leaping pick in the end zone. Very steady player, he will not make mistakes at Texas.
- Devante Kincade, QB Dallas Skyline is a name to remember. I don’t think Texas will miss on Barrett or Swoopes, but Kincade is going to be a player somewhere.

I left Will Barrows and Ced Collins off, but not intentionally.
I love Collins. He had a quiet night, but was never really challenged. I saw him Jake Oliver on Collins Island, and that’s all I need to see. If Texas can get Collins, they don’t have to worry about one side of the field. Shut down corner.
Barrows made a helluva play on 4th down to break up a competition. Very athletic. I think he’s a borderline take, but you take chances with Skyline kids because they usually work out.

Or was he a guy who wanted to play Defense
Armstead
Armstead wants to play defense, at least intially and Texas should let play whatever position he wants. Just get him in the program and if you want to move him later then do it with his blessing. He always wants to play basketball at Texas and the coaches have been selling that angle hard. LaSalle Thompson is friends with Armstead’s father, so Texas definitely has an in. Armstead’s father was born in Ft. Worth so there is some Texas ties.

Is Ash really going to be our starter?
Maybe you’re still a fan of his, but I don’t get how he can be justified as our QB without giving Case a chance. Do you think Case should play? Can you make an argument for Ash starting? He has thrown 6ints and 0 tds since OU, and hasn’t been able to score in 2 games, Case came in and did what Ash couldn’t do right away
I think Case should start against TAMU. At this point, I’d play whichever QB will turn over the ball less. Ash’s last interception was a horrible decision and throw. A jump pass off your back foot, what the hell is that?

What’s the hold up for Mack just pulling the trigger and offering him a scholarship the kid seems like he really wants to come to the 40???
It sounds like Texas has placed a higher priority on taking an ATH / WR with the last few spots. Kendall Sanders, yes that Kendall Sanders is likely higher on the list because of his ability to play corner. I love Marcus Johnson’s game. He could get an offer soon.

Manny Diaz has made his bones as far as I am concerned
Our defense is just plain nasty and Diaz has his shit together.
That big old doofus QB for K-State had all of our defense he could stand.
We are simply going to be awesome on defense nest year – the best in the country.
I would seriously look at that skinny M. Thompson at QB this week. The kid has been reported as running a 4.2 in the 40 anbd I have seen his films – he can pass no worse that the two DII QB’s we have right now.
Ash is shell shocked and has a confidence problem – he is the clone of GG in that regard. He is done for the year and maybe his career – who knows.
Case – no way, he just can’t hack it!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
I pray that Thompson at QB is a new wrinkle on offense against TAMU
Texas needs to treat Mykkele fairly. He projects better as a safety and his future is there. Texas needs to think about his development.

Texas has to ask themselves, do they want to continue to develop Ash next year or punt and move on to Brewer. If they want to go with Brewer, bring in the JUCO QB. Next year is going to be frustrating if Ash is our QB.

Sad
Because the defense will be loaded at every level, the running game should be among the best in the country and will have the best RB corps in the country, and the WRs will be talented. All the team needs to compete for the NC, especially in such a watered-down conference, will be mediocre play at QB and the ability to connect on deep balls.
Follow me on Twitter @GoHornsGo90
With the backs we have
The ball shouldn’t go in the air more than 15 times a game. Right now I would take a QB that can hit open receivers. That’s all I’m asking for.

Different leagues
You don’t see many shoot outs in the SEC. You do in the Big 12. I’m not saying the Big 12 is a better league, but it takes a more versatile offense to win in the Big 12.

Juco QB
At this point, if there is a very good Juco QB available, then I hope we take him.
I hate the idea of playing freshman QB’s and strongly think they should sit the first year, learn the system, and gain the knowledge and confidence to run the offense.
Northwest Mississippi CC QB Ryan Mossakowski seems to be the most frequently mentioned candidate on the fan boards. He’s a 4 star recruit from Frisco, Texas.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 10:30 PM CST up reply actions
Meant to ask this yesterday but was out
I think going after a 2nd QB in the class was obviously imperative, but I’m wondering why Brown didn’t more strongly consider going after a JuCo QB. At this point, it seems to be more “hope and prayer” that Ash and/or McCoy develop into even an adequate QB starting next year. And throwing the keys to a true freshman Brewer is practically the same starting over with Ash this season—there’s just simply little track record of success for true freshman QBs in their first year.
Some background on Mossakowski, who as BFLT mentioned was a 4* from Frisco. He was actually offered by Texas A&M, as well as noted schools like Alabama and Oregon, so there was some talent and potential. He came in the same class as another highly regarded QB recruit, Morgan Newton (who started the year as Kentucky’s QB1), and there was significant hope in the bluegrass. Mossakowski suffered a serious shoulder injury coming out of HS, and that set him behind the 8-ball. He redshirted his first year, then didn’t really challenge for serious PT last year. After Newton took over for senior Mike Hartline in last year’s bowl game, Mossy saw the writing on the wall and decided to transfer. Like Wood/Kinne/et al, it was probably a mistake. Newton has struggled mightily this year, and if Mossy had stuck around, he probably would have had a shot.
I know a lot of people are dismissive of him because he couldn’t get on the field for Kentucky, but the injury set him behind Newton in his development, and Kentucky coaxed a pretty solid senior seasno out of Hartline, so it’s not like Mossakowski was really needed last year.
I have no idea where he stands in his recruitment (juco recruiting seems to be an impossible thing to find on Google), but he’s had two years of practice time under a bad, but legitimate BCS program, and one year of lighting up the scoreboard as a JuCo QB. He could conceivably come in and start from Day 1 without being overwhelmed, and might actually be good.
Very good info Jeff
Thanks for the research

Brandon Moore has likely been offered by Texas
It sounds like Texas is going to check into Moore’s background and history, and then move forward with an approval. Moore is a tremendous prospect. He played as a freshman on the 2009 National Champion Alabama team and he’s spent 2 years in the weight room since then. Instant impact.
Moore’s coach has told a couple outlets that Moore will commit to Texas if offered, and he wants to play for Bo Davis, and only Bo Davis.

From what I can gather through internet sleuthing, we know a) he was “indefinitely suspended” for violating team rules all through spring. Coach Saban made a comment that’s posted on both the TideSports site that stated they were “waiting for grades to come in to further assess the situation.” b) He was exploring JC schools to find a school to transfer to (apparently before having a chance to talk with Coach Saban).

Lot of negativity in this thread and I have been responsible for some of it, but I would just like to pt out what an absolute steal this guy has been. Remember back in Aug. We had 3 worries ol, qb, and DT. What he has done with the DL and especially DT is amazing. I am no scout, but right now if you asked me who the most likely 1st rnd pick on this team woud be I would say Whaley. If he continues to grow there is no ceiling to his potential. DT dont move like he does. Fact that he is contributed at this level and playing the position for only a few months speaks volumes about Davis’s ability to coach.
Hm
Very interesting assessment about Whaley, codaxx. Davis has obviously just been beast mode for Texas over the second half of the season, and he’s a fantastic recruiter to boot. I also love what I’ve seen of his teaching methods on LHN All Access.
With Whale, Dorsey, Howell, D. Jackson already here and MB2 and (likely) Moore coming in for next year, Davis will have a loaded and diverse DT group to work with. Embarrassment of riches.

Don't forget Greg Daniels. He's been in that rotation at DT as well.
Do not be distracted by what you see, but be transformed by what you believe.
See above. Nobody trap doors like Saban. Honestly, Bama might have had to make room and just didn’t want to deal with the off field problems. I’m not sure, but Texas is doing their due diligence.

We’ve been burned by “good” kids down through the years. If we do due diligence I’m not sure why some older more mature kids can’t fit into our plans.
Moore isn't a minor
Texas can certainly take a good, long, hard and legal look at Moore’s past. I think Moore understands what’s in front of him. Heck, google his name and he already has a NFL Draft profile. He understands if he plays well at Texas, he’ll be cashing a NFL check in a few years.

QB play
I really can’t handle watching Case play QB, the way he panicks, runs around in circles, throws skipped balls on screens, holds the balls below his hip with one hand when he moves around the pocket and take sacks. I realize the Ash INTs were killers last night but I like him so much better at QB. I feel like Case gets too much credit for hitting Irby due to busted coverage and ‘leading a drive" which was all Cody’s big run. I guess my qustion about Case is his ability to be coachable. He hasn’t physically matured or in terms of his pocket presence and throwing mechanics. Is he committed to being the QB at Texas by putting in the work?
I’ve heard a few different things on Case that I can’t elaborate one. Is he working out? Yes. Is he going to all the team meetings? Yes. Is he watching film? You bet. It could be a mental thing. He had all summer to improve his footwork and he hasn’t progressed. Again thank goodness for the bowl practices. Harsin will have a few more precious weeks to work with the QBs.

I don't remember...
but did Colt have many or any of the same limitations? I remember Colt physically developed later on.
Not the same player
Colt always had a better arm, and good fundamentals. From some personal accounts, Colt is a great athlete. Case is not a great athlete, he is Colt’s brother, but that’s where the similarities end for me.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 6:13 PM CST up reply actions
I guess my thoughts are directed more towards the next few seasons, rather than the next few games. I feel like Case has already hit his ceiling as QB at this level. His brother is an NFL QB, I think we’ve seen Jaxon use that to his advantage being able to make an instant impact. Case has all the resources, I just don’t know if he’s physically and mentally capable of making Texas a BCS contender in the seasons to come.
Case
He put himself in a very tough position. Why follow his brother at such a high profile school? He’s not as good an athlete as Colt, he doesn’t have close to arm strength, Colt had better footwork and fundamentals at same stage of development. I could go on.
If you want to be fair to Case, don’t compare him to his brother.

GJ Kinne
He’s the transfer that I shake my head most at. Texas did their job. The did a good evaluation, they found a diamond in the rough. Unfortunately, Kinne transferred before he got his shot. The recruiting doesn’t stop until they graduate. It’s the age we live in.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 6:11 PM CST reply actions
Isn't that a downside of having such good recruiting?
The guys that get locked into long-term backup roles know that they are good enough to start at other good programs, and need that exposure to help their chances at getting to the next level, so they just bolt instead of sticking around.
If you're so sure of what it ain't, how about telling us what it am!
A program like Tech is fortunate. They can take a 2 or 3 star, develop him for 4 years and then start him as a 5th year senior. Sometimes it’s not about the stars, it’s about the guys that will stay in the program until they’re ready to play.

Next commit
It could be Moore. I think Texas will land Colbert, but Baylor has a big recruiting weekend set up for January. I think Colbert will take his official visits, and then make a decision in January.
Daje Johnson and Marcus Johnson would flip immediately if offered.
Things could move quickly with Kendall Sanders.

The guy wasn’t happy. I think the Big 12 should strongly consider stepping in. Players safety is in serious jeopardy on that turf. No way in hell the SEC will let them play in their conference with that field.
That’s a quick healing period after a game and coming back from an injury. I don’t think either will truly be 100% for TAMU. They can be effective though.

Play-calling
I realize the lack of the Wildcat package has hurt. Not having effective RBs avaliable to play doesn’t help either. But with all that said, I feel like we’ve become pretty vanilla on offense. I know those trick plays didn’t work against OU. But I feel like we need to throw the kitchen sink at the Aggies on Thursday. Maybe 3 or 4 trick plays and tons of different looks on offense to be effective. Your thoughts on what we need to do on offense to score enough to win on T Day.
Harsin has driven me crazy with the red zone play calling this season. A jet sweep on the last red zone trip would have been a good idea. It’s difficult for Texas to pass for touchdowns right now. They should keep it on the ground inside the 20.

Defensive Recruits?
With Texas likely to have offered Moore, what does that do to our chances of offering/landing his teammate Autry? Do we need both? Being at the same CC, seems probable that we could land both if we want.
I really like Autry
I don’t think Moore and Autry are a package deal. Unfortunately, Autry and his teammate Damien Jacobs appear to be a package deal. I’d be surprised if they didn’t end up at the same school.
Texas wants Moore, I don’t think they’re interested in Jacobs (an excellent recruit in his own right). Texas is in a tough spot at DE. Fading on Mario Edwards, faced with a package deal on Autry, and trying to gain ground on LSU with Torshiro Davis. This could be the need position that Texas doesn’t get another recruit at.
I’ve heard some talk that landing Moore could help us with Donald Hawkins so there’s that.

He and Arik Armstead are very similar players. To get both would be huge. The decision to offer Nick Jordan a K scholarship could come back to bite us in the ass in terms of schollie #s.

Texas probably has the best shot of landing Armstead or Magee. I hope Caleb Bluiett is your speed rusher because Armstead, Magee and Ridgeway look project as strongside ends. Get ready for multiple fronts after Jeffcoat and Okafor leave.

Magee wants to stay in Texas. Good sign that he didn’t commit to TAMU, but who knows with him.

Shipley is Texas’ best WR. Primarily because he can make adjustments on poorly thrown balls which is invaluable with our current QBs.
Diggs is better on returns, and he should keep his job.
I like Jaxon in the Wildcat because of his decision making progress, and he’s shown he can make a throw in a big spot. I think Wildcat will be run by a variety of players for the remainder of the season.
Texas wins yesterday with Fozzy. Think about that. The Wildcat is our best redzone offense, by far.

Harsin as OC Evaluation
The off-season hire of Harsin as OC sounded great to many fans because of the success BSU has had on offense. But the offense itself was designed and implemented by Peterson when he was OC before becoming HC. I’ve been withholding judgment on him out of concern that his huge salary bump was more for the playbook he copied and brought to UT more than his own skillset and imagination. There’s no way the athletes at UT are less talented than the ones he had available at BSU so what chapters do you think he forgot to scan and save in the playbook and is it possible that Peterson really still runs the offense at BSU while the OC is more of a figurehead who’s given mundane tasks? And what are you looking for from Harsin to show he’s capable of standing on his own two feet in becoming an OC who’s worth being compensated as one of the top-paid OC’s in the NCAA? I honestly haven’t seen the value yet, and, gulp, hope I never start to have longings for, gulp, GD, as “the good ’ole days”!

Amen
on the patience. If Harsin had the same type players that Manny has we wouldn’t be having this discussion. QBs that can’t shoot straight and receivers that don’t get separation are ingredients for a OC’s nightmare.
My only criticism of Harsin is that he gets cute in the red zone. Honestly, I think he over thinks his play calling inside the 20. So many times in this league, it’s about punching it in, not fooling your opponent.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 7:03 PM CST up reply actions
Harsin
He has frustrated at times, but to be honest I am not sure there are many that could succeed with the current offense. The o-line has improved, but they are far from dominant. I would say the QB and WRs Corp are at or near the bottom of the league. They have potential, but they are not there at this moment. Our only plus position on that side is at RB and they are true freshmen. It is depressing, but true
Applewhite
A lot of criticism of Harsin over the last two weeks – probably warranted given his paycheck. I like the offense and when the run game is working it is exciting and dynamic, but what role does Applewhite play as co-OC? There has been no criticism of Applewhite thus far. Would he be a better QB coach or play caller? Does he influence the play calling or the playbook? Interested in any insight you may have into this.
Applewhite
Definitely has input on the playcalling. He does deserve criticism. How the play calling works at Texas has never been fully explained to me.

That's Why Withholding Judgment
But we have seen other OC’s come into the league and make an impact immediately, and anyone earning that much in that position shouldn’t get a free ride based on what he did somewhere else. He and the team deserves an honest evaluation of his performance to make the necessary improvements. I’m with you that it is still too early to say he’s failed, but he obviously hasn’t succeeded….so far.
I guess I’m more skeptical of BSU coaches not named Chris Peterson given what I saw from Dan Hawkins when he came to CU from BSU. BSU had been great while Hawkins was HC there with CP as his OC. DH sucked at CU, while BSU thrived with CP as HC. And BSU has continued to thrive under CP without Harsin as OC there while UT’s offense struggles mightily. I guess I’m getting more and more skeptical of what exactly his track record is with every lousy offensive showing, and what he may be getting credit for simply riding CP’s coat tails to payday like Hawkins did. I want him to be real, but still waiting to be shown something 10 games into the season.

The personnel is really poor. The Big 12 is a QB driven league. If you don’t have an above average QB in this league, you’re going to struggle to win consistently. I know Texas is moving towards more a SEC model, but Texas must get better QB play to progress as an offense.

that you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken sh!t. That is not to say that the players at Texas are excrement by any means but just that it is hard to call plays your way when you do not have the correct players in place. Recruiting QB's
We seem to have completely misfired on recruiting QB’s since 2008, with none of them showing anything that warrants hope for future success from the position. Zip, zero, zilch in “glimmers of hope” category. What do coaches miss when evaluating HS kids with great numbers who get great reviews by recruiting services? Have they gotten lazy by simply recruiting the number of stars with little actual research or review of game film that could better indicate how they’ll respond to decision-making under pressure vs. lighting up the practice field? Or where do you think the breakdown has been? And could Brewer be cut from the same, ineffective GG, Ash highly rated but dud mold, too?
by RMHorn on Nov 20, 2011 7:06 PM CST via mobile reply actions
Brewer
Connor is going to need some time to develop. Don’t even think about giving him a game jersey. Forget about Brewer for a year.
Ash was heralded as a good evaluation, Greg Davis’ last. David hasn’t played well in game action. There’s no good solution next year. Hell I’d support running the option with Overstreet if Texas could get points out of it.
I never liked the Case offer.
Texas needs a stop gap at QB. We will drop games we should win next year if there’s not a solution. I have no idea where a solution is going to come from.

And was really looking forward to seeing him play. He then threw 4 horrendous picks to an average-at-best secondary with no real playmakers. I'll take an avg QB that hates to lose every time.
You can’t teach or coach the Doug Fluties of the world. Tebow (ugh) is like that too. He hates to lose and he makes things happens.
Our QBs are so quick to put head down and start doubting insteading of wanting the ball in their hands because they KNOW they will win. Ash is so young, that it seems we are breaking his psyche just like we did GG by overexpectations of a Frosh. But, they do need to step up.
From what I’ve read on here and other boards Brewer is going to be a good fit. GG should have been the guy. He had all the stats and talent, but couldn’t get straight between the ears. Connor Wood had offers from OU and others so there was no reason not to be on his bandwagon. Ash was pretty darn good in HS.
So, I’m just completely perplexed. I just don’t understand the first few Offensive series when Ash kept missing easy short passes. Harsin gave him easy pass plays, and he kept choking. I just don’t know how to fix that. I do agree that more runs would have been nice, and if Brown and Bergeron are still not 100% then let CJ, Hales, Goodwin, Monroe or Hills carry the rock. We have talent.
All that said, this freaking glass is half full, not half empty. I’m already expecting some of these guys that played this week to be playing for MNC. Our D is beyond any of my expectations, and with our top O recruits I am very optimistic.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
Miffed on QB Development
I am a little miffed and perplexed why the last few high profile QB’s that have come to our program have never developed.- GG 5*, Wood 4*, and now Ash 4*. It cannot just be all about the recruiting or that these kids have issues where they cannot learn.
I think the coaching is a large and integral part of why these kids have not developed here. I think we need to do more than what has transpired over the last several years…Maybe bring in a QB specialist where all he does is improve QB’s.
Whatever we are doing right now for developing QB’s, its’ just not working…
Agreed
I’m tired of everybody blaming UT’s recruiting choices. You have to develop the players, no matter what they’re talent level is. Confidence is important. Decision-making is important. Leadership is important. Accuracy is important. These things can be taught.

A 6-7 Season Might...
turn up the heat in that seat, though. I mean, really, going 5-7 one year followed by a 6-7 “improvement” will start to get the long knives sharpened. I’m not going to call for his head this season if that’s the outcome…..but 2012 is a whole different ballgame. Finishing 6-7 this year will make the likelihood of a 9 or 10-win 2012 even less. And if MB delivers fewer than 9 wins next year I will be leading the “fire Mack Brown” brigade. And I’m pretty sure the big wigs who actually have some say so will be losing patience then, too. He makes to damn much to give us 5-7, 6-7 seasons back to back followed by a 7-6 or 8-5 “rebound”. That makes this whole QB debacle the biggest coaching challenge of his career. Either he figures it out or he’ll be facing the same kind of inglorious departure from UT that Bowden had at FSU, though maybe they just kick him upstairs into the administration to save him the embarrassment factor. I like MB now and hope he realizes how much now rides on next year….which rides on how many (if any) more wins come these next three games.

Unless I missed something with the big 12, early enrollees count for either their current class or the previous one. I would assume that they were constantly having them count for previous years, so should the situation arise that they need to go over, they could.
I don’t think they should go over, unless attrition is ridiculously high. Otherwise, scholarships would be at a premium in 2013.
JUCOs count as mid termers, and don’t count against the 25 signee limit in February. All the more reason to take them.

Scenario Planning
Don’t think of it as 2 WRs. Think of it more as they’ll take up to two, depending on how the other pieces fall. It sounds like the staff is making sure they put the work in now to make sure the holes get filled in case their primary choices don’t work out.
I’d actually been wondering if Daje is more of a Plan B and they were waiting on someone else to make a decision before offering that spot, since they told him they weren’t going to going to make a decision on his offer until after the season.
Good point
I should have said, “2 WRs if one of them is DGB.” Point being, the coaches are obviously thinking of a scenario where DGB comes here and we take another wideout, in which case we’d be taking two.

You want examples of giving up? Try these:

Everyone knows we need a QB. Let me re-phrase this. Everyone knows we need a QB that can function on, at least, a mechanical level in DI football. This means, cut out the turnovers and complete a pass, now and then, to one of OUR receivers.
That being said, I think it is imperative that we recruit, recruit, recruit WR’s. DGB is the type that takes us to a natty championship.

Sorry! But how much impact have they had on the recruiting front as far as being in the ears of other targets?
Recruits seem to be drawn to both. Gray is very quietly every bit the recruiter as Brewer. He’s already working on Raulerson, and stays in contact with current Texas targets.

2 Quick Questions Bill
I’m not sure I WANT to punt with Ash and hope Brewer/Overstreet works out, but if that’s the case… as we ARE looking at Juco QB’s… who’s out there?
Also… How about DJ Monroe running the Wildcat? It seems like they’ve been trying ways to get him involved… why not just give him a package and be done with it?
I haven’t heard anything about taking a JUCO QB at some serious level. The QB play has been consistent all year, if Texas was going to make a move on a JUCO QB they would have already done that.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 7:59 PM CST up reply actions
That's a shame
Next year looks like more of the same then.
Speaking of punting with Ash...
Bill, I seem to remember Ash can supposedly punt. Why didn’t we use Ash to pooch punt against KSU instead of Tucker punting out of the endzone (forgive me I can’t remember the exact play)? I remember thinking at the time that JT would give us a touchback, but Ash would likely land the ball inside the 15 due to lack of leg strength. Colt pooch-punted for us a few times over the years too. Wouldn’t that open up more options for us, like actually going for it on 4th if Ash notices a huge hole – or by pulling the defense up to protect against the fake, allowing us better punt coverage? Surely Ash could have punted the ball longer than the 24 net yards we got from JT’s touchback.
I agree Texas didn’t flip the yardage very well in that sequence.
by billfromlaketravis on Nov 20, 2011 10:05 PM CST up reply actions
Tucker's kicking has been fantastic this season
But he is a liability in punting situations. Why are we giving all these scholarships to K/P that can’t take at least one facet (punting, kickoff) away from Justin?

punting
what is with the rugby punts at mid-field. The pt of the rugby kick is that it rolls. Isnt that the exact opposite of what you wan tin that situation
Any concern we've ruined Ash?
The more Mack has talked about needing a passing game and how important it is for winning, the poorer Ash has played. Mack’s continued talking about the passing game seemed like a poor idea to me, given that Ash is a very young true freshman. I think you need to avoid putting unnecessary pressure on young players.
Add to that they made him starter but would never name him starter. I think he is torn between “I can’t make a mistake” and “I’ve got to make a play or they will pull me”. I know it didn’t turn out well with GG, but usually you commit to a quarterback until he proves he can’t do it. Texas never made the commitment to Ash and I think it has affected his performance.
Finally the play calling is a mystery. All the passing against OSU when we were running the ball well, no passing against TT when we knew it was a area that needed work, and forcing long pass after long pass on a windy day at Miz. Not a good way to develop the confidence of a young quarterback.
by longhorn charlie on Nov 20, 2011 8:07 PM CST reply actions
Harsinwhite did give Ash some short easy passes to start
And he still kept missing by throwing behind the guys.
I agree with you and I don’t understand the lack of exploiting the run success. It was frustrating. Our run game is good, so let’s keep it going until they stop it.
I always like when we let the QB get a few runs in so that they get their juices flowing. But, Ash never seems to be the field commander and determined to WIN. Same with McCoy. McCoy was a bit pathetic twrifling in ciricles with the game on the line.
We need a more aggressive ready to lead QB. None of the guys seem to be leaders. So, if we have to go Juco, we go Juco. I don’t have a problem getting a Juco guy.
We're Texas, We're not OK.
The early passes are part of what I'm talking about
Mack and Harsin talked about getting Ash some easy completions early during the week. The announcers even said before the game that they were going to give Ash some easy passes early. I’m sure the defense also knew about it. I think it added pressure. These are easy passes, you’ve got to complete them.
Our strength is running the ball. We need to establish that early, and pass off of that success. Challenge the line and the backs to pick up their young quarterback.
by longhorn charlie on Nov 20, 2011 8:27 PM CST up reply actions
Ass-Backwards Logic, IMHO
You commit to a QB when he proves he CAN do it, not the other way around. In an open competition for the spot they guy who steps up and makes plays, gets it done on the field should get the coach’s nod. Nobody who hasn’t gotten it done deserves squat. A QB needs to be a leader and fight for the right to start through their performance, not some mind game build confidence crap. Championship QB’s have that trait inside them, it’s not taught or nurtured by coaches. Do either of these kids have the trait or not is the only question, and if not how do we suffer through and minimize the damage of a 3-4 season (at least) void at that position will cause to the program at quite possibly the worst time imaginable while UT is trying to promote LHN with little enthusiasm for the current state of affairs. This problem is costing UT and ESPN countless millions while fans have little reason to pay for the privilege to get a bad product in their living room.

If for whatever reason we decide to go with Brewer next year
do you expect similar results to what GG and Ash have given us this year?
I mean… is it that hard to recruit a QB that can complete basic passes?
Also, what are your thoughts if we decide to go back to a McAsh platoon? Good or bad for the future? I still say bad. Even if Case “deserves” to start, every snap he takes is one less opportunity for Ash to learn and gain experience.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 20, 2011 8:20 PM CST reply actions
Brewer needs to redshirt period. Texas has learned 2 hard lessons on not redshirting freshman quarterbacks.

Hard to tell at this time. After this season, it’s hard to trust practice reports. Not their validity, but how practices translate into games.

Posted this earlier but...
Any reason for the "stopgap" we couldn’t use Ash the same way KSU uses Klein? Why can’t we do what they’ve done this year? We have better backs and a better defense.
'Til Gabriel blows his horn...
they probably could, but then you're not developing Ash at all as a thrower
don’t think we could win a championship being so one dimensional
by goingforthecorner on Nov 20, 2011 8:27 PM CST up reply actions
True
Seems like we could possibly use the passing game a little more than KSU. Seems like a tough spot for Harsin: either play to win at the cost of development or play to develop at the cost of wins.
'Til Gabriel blows his horn...
and he and the coaching staff definitely chose the latter
see: 4 straight passes late against KSU when the running game was working. Also see: passing against Oklahoma St. in the 4Q when we were gashing them in the running game.

WR
What do you think the odds are that both in coming freshmen at WR are making major contributions next yr? I think the current group is the most disappointing position at Texas this yr
that disappointment might have more to do with the QB throwing the ball
In the Mizzou game for example, I thought Goodwin had a fantastic game. Ran great routes and consistently got open. Imagine his stat line if Ash didn’t overthrow him.
Also, no Shipley as the reliable safety net has killed us.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 20, 2011 8:23 PM CST up reply actions
Maybe
But show me a play this yr when one of them made a catch in coverage not named Shipley. How many broken tackles has the group made? Dropped balls probably rival YAC. Goodwin leads the nation in tackled by turf. In the end I don’t see any that are capable of taking a 5 yd pass and turning into a 70 yd TD, that despite Goodwims obvious speed
Agreed
Not very many. Not sure how much of it is receiver play and how much is having no flow because of QB play.

Ash's 2nd Pick
Right after Ash’s second INT I told my friends that was the kind of turnover that deflates a defense. And sure enough KSU just carved right through our otherwise stellar defense to score a TD more easily than I’ll be carving the bird Thursday. Turnovers are just killers, that’s why sooo much emphasis is placed on winning the turnover battle. Mack & Manny stress that point from the getting better at takeaway side of that equation. But in looking back to last season and at this one it’s been the giveaways that have doomed UT. Prevent GG’s turnovers last year and we probably win 8-9 games. Prevent Ash’s INT’s & Case’s fumbles and we’re probably sitting at 8-2 this year. What can Mack & Harsin do to get our challenged QB’s to take better care of the ball? With that D they’ll be in a position to win every game if they’re not giving up scoring opportunities and providing the opponent momentum changes. Get the QB’s to at least play keep away with the ball and big progress will be made. At this point I’ve given up and could care less about offensive production out of them and would be happy with simply ending their self-destruction.
by RMHorn on Nov 20, 2011 8:26 PM CST via mobile reply actions
goes both ways though
D has been spectacular, but they need to be able to force turnovers too. I hope they are being coached to do the little things like trying to strip the ball. A number of times we went all out to block a KSU punt but failed. Our one turnover we forced was called back due to a questionable halo call.
by goingforthecorner on Nov 20, 2011 8:29 PM CST up reply actions
Well, You're Kinda Proving My Point
Yes, we need takeaways as you say, as Diaz and Mack say. But while the defense is searching for that answer as the only glaring deficiency the QB position controls most of the giveaways we’ve suffered that deflates the D and results in points against. If they do nothing else but stop the unforced errors they can win and we would’ve had respectable seasons last year and this one. Yeah, we need more takeaways but asking the D to not only stop the other guys but to score points to make up for the ones the offense gives away – while the offense is incapable of scoring anything at all – is a tall order. The 2nd INT was a prime example of watching the D take off one series (out of frustration) over the entire course of the game that resulted in the difference in the score. The D is really good and a bright spot on the team. But not THAT good to play both roles for the team. I’m certain their mindset now just prays the QB doesn’t keep effin up with turnovers so they can win. Whichever QB is playing has gotta recognize that and fix it. It’s one thing to throw a pick, all QB’s do, if they follow it up with 2-3 TD’s on the other side of the ledger. The ratio is upside down these last two years, though. Better reads, decision making on when to take a sack or throw it away instead of forcing the BS throws they and the coaches have far more control over and ability to fix than stripping the ball or getting their own INT’s.

Swagger?
An overused term over the last few years, but really, I think we need to get a QB that has a little swagger or attitude about him. Our QB’s going back to GG last year seem to look like a deer in the headlights and carry themselves at times like a dog with its tail between its legs. Is it just me, or do think our QB’s lack this critical component of leadership?
Maybe it stems from them be young (freshman) and lacking some little victories. I saw a glimpse of that swagger and confidence from Ash when he broke that 40 yard run on TT.
Random question out of curiosity
Don’t follow recruiting at all. Did we ever pursue Andrew Luck? Was he ever interested in us? Do you know the nature of his recruitment process as far as which schools he thought about before going with Stanford?

In all fairness...
…do you think Luck would be what he is with our OL, running game, and receivers? Not saying he’s not good, but I don’t understand pointing out recruiting choices like this. It’s a system, a scheme, a team….more than any one player, be they for Stanford or Texas, and no one is magic, not even Vince. There, I said it. He had a running game, receivers, a hell of a D, and the spread was new. I obviously love the man, his work was amazing, but it’s a team and no one succeeds or fails alone. Gilbert was a high profile let down, McCoy Uno was a low profile surprise….it happens.
You would think the system, a scheme and the program that had produced the teams of 2005 thru 2009....
would still be recruiting studs across the board….OL, Receivers, RBs, and D…….so when you see the QBs that were on Mack’s table in 09…..Luck, Keenum, RGlll etc etc, it really just makes you wonder as to what caused the wheels to come off the recruiting system.
I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize
by MeatchickenHorn on Nov 20, 2011 9:45 PM CST up reply actions
Two things
1. Word seems to be the offensive staff got lazy and went after guys who would commit, not the best guys.
2. Lack of identity played a part I think as well. Mack wanted power running, GD was a spread guy. No one was certain who we wanted to be so we were just recruiting guys not guys for a certain system.
Combine the two and here we are.
'Til Gabriel blows his horn...
I second that...
Plus, in all honesty, how many teams would been excited to get Gilbert out of high school? I’m going to guess it’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 120… That bust hurt us. Bad. I know it’s also on the coaches, receivers, backs, and OL, but it was just a big let down Worse still, how do we develop a QB with no receivers? How do we develop a QB when we race into the rush with excessive abandon when it works to the point of being one dimensional?
Argh. Thursday is going to suck.
The same guy who......
…. had to be pressured consistently by Tim Brewster to continue recruiting Vince Young. The same guy who insisted we promise Whaley he would be our only RB in the class. The same guy who dissed his RB coach’s evaluation of Christine Michael. Without a doubt the worst of our previous staff’s evaluators of talent. Consistently.

Closing 2012 Recruiting
I know its wishful thinking, but we could possibly end the 2012 recruiting class with some huge names and possibly some of the tops at their positions – DGB, Armstead, Sanders, and less likely Collins. Jeez, this would be a dominating recruiting class if that ever happened!
If they just get DGB, it will be a monumental class
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
Two things for clarification: (@bill) and a comment
You say that the JUCOs don’t count toward the 25 scholly limit. I did not know this. Could you outline what the limits are pertaining to that? For example: I doubt you can pull 25 schollys and 10 JUCOs…there has to be an upside limit there right?
Secondly, from my interpretation, I thought GD put all our eggs in the GG basket. As I understood it, the conversation went like this:
Mack: Are you sure…we could get this guy, or this guy.
GDGD: Completely, this guy is golden
Mack: You had better be sure, you can’t just hang out and throw -2 yard passes here for another year if this kid goes bust-o.
GDGD: I’m sure, I would bet my job on it.
Mack: You are.
GDGD: Gulp.
Or something to that extent. I am sure Mack threw a jab about -2 yard passes in there somewhere. Seriously though, isn’t that part of the reason Mack wiped his hands clean?
And lastly…I know this was way further up in the board, but speaking of questioning CP/Harsin’s record, and how much Harsin actually contributed to said record: I think we have to give him until next year and maybe another after. Hard to tell a guy he is the problem when the first of his recruits haven’t even hit campus yet.
I couldn’t give two shits about Harsin’s ability to turn our (existing) players into the offense he wants (I simply think he’s playing LEGO’s with two half-sets…never gonna build the Death Star with pieces from an X-wing). I am very optimistic (and extremely interested) in whether he can bring players in and develop THEM into the offense he wants. Though in his defense when all the pieces were in play (BNB and Ship, Fozz), he did OK (i.e. TTU…I am not counting Kansas…sorry, 0-8…no.). Hard to say he’s doing well though, since ALL of our wins are against middling and/or schizophrenic teams.
Thoughts about how long we should give him? Personally, I think we should let him play with a full deck for a year before we even consider going a different direction
Then why was Mack attempting....
…… to defend and retain Greg Davis to the big money donars right up until the very last moment?
