Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

Sundays with Bill, Rejoicing on Thanksgiving

I didn't say it publicly, but the final TAMU game was a must win for Texas. When friends discussed how important this game was, I pointed out it was more important for Texas to get to 7 wins to insure a winning season. Privately, I wanted a win, badly. Thankfully, the Texas players shared my desire.
Talking points:
* Final TAMU Game: When a win is more than just a win, Justin Tucker becomes a legend, Case McCoy's gutsy final drive, defense steps it up, Byndom houses an interception in a play that turned the game, the trick play Shipley to Irby, Quandre the Giant shows outs.
*Recruiting tidbits: Targets at the TAMU Game (I'll have the best list I can find), Donald Hawkins cancels a visit but makes a another, Colbert attends an OOS game, Marcus Johnson commits to TAMU, DGB's thoughts on Johnathan Gray.
* A look ahead to Baylor: Can RGIII go? Stopping Baylor's offense, scoring enough points to win, again.
* Bowl projection: Why I'm hoping the Longhorns take the Riverwalk Boat Tour, Insight, Alamo, Holiday, 3 more weeks+ of practices.
* A glimpse into next season: Texas will become a more versatile, multiple, and dynamic offense next year, also a look at the defense. A look at the state of the program.
I'm here and ready to go. Celebrate the TAMU win with me.

Not a bad list, but the Aggies probably wish they had a few more big names

Word is that Schlottman was openly cheering for Texas. Good sign. Austin is the probably the top OT in the 2014 class.

I think Derek David liked Texas before his transcript / criminal side reared it’s ugly head. James is said to be a much better student / citizen, and every bit the talent of his brother.

Keith Ford will be an interesting recruitment to follow. His family is from the Northeast, so there’s not really an in state loyalty.

Oliver has seen 4 Texas games in person this year. Wyatt won’t give up an inch on Oliver. Should be a battle with TAMU. Thursday night could have definitely helped Texas’ chances.

‘Cosm guys feel pretty good about Collins and Hollins. Collins is Ced Reed’s cousin, so there’s a big time in.

Christian Morgan will commit to Texas if they offer. His mother, and 2 uncles went to Texas.

the Bears looked pretty good on offense. Is our secondary strong enough to counter either an RGIII-led or RGIII-less-led Baylor?

Baylor

Obviously the Bears can throw it around. Baylor could be a bigger defensive challenge than TAMU. However, Baylor’s defense isn’t in the same paragraph as TAMU’s. If Texas can run it, I like our chances. I think Bergeron will go. By Saturday, Mean Joe would have more than 2 weeks to rest.

Thank goodness Jaxon is back. Should be healthier against Baylor.

It looked like he was concussed on that play and continued to play. I don’t like how Briles and the Baylor staff handled that. If RGIII did suffer a concussion, he shouldn’t play against Texas.

Bill

I am one happy camper after that glorious victory. Could you speak to the QB situation. I hear people writing Ash off and I am not near ready for that. I think we could be effective with QBs playing packages. Say Ash 50-60%, Case 30-40% and the wildcat with Overstreet and others 10-15%. What say ye? I just cant bear the thought of going next year with another true freshman

QB situation

Moving forward into the Baylor game, the bowl game and next season I think Case should be the starter and get most of the snaps. I think David has some value in short yardage situations, but so does Overstreet.

Case manages the game better and doesn’t turn it over. If he can make a couple throws a game next year, Texas could have a lot of success. However, if Case has to win a game for Texas by throwing it 25+ plus, I have grave concerns.

I think Case gets most of the snaps, David gets work in short yardage and mop up duty, Overstreet sees time in the Wildcat and short yardage. Honestly, I think Texas has 3 players capable of running the Wildcat well next season: Johnathan Gray, Thomas Johnson and Jalen Overstreet.

Brewer must be a redshirt, so that we can get back on track with a pattern of older QBs and younger ones getting a chance to grow into the program. No more 4-way competitions please.

Disagree on Ash

For Baylor, sure, Case. For the bowl, what do we really have to gain by winning/losing?

Ash, I remain convinced, is the future. Maybe Brewer is, maybe not. I’m a strong Ash guy. The progress he made, the skill he showed, both in games but more obviously at practice, means the staff felt he was the future. CWood saw that and bailed. GG saw it and bailed. I’m glad Case stayed, and fervently hope he stayed the full four years, but Ash is the guy.

I’ll stop now and attach my suit of armor.

by edsp on Nov 27, 2011 5:28 PM CST up reply actions

What progress?

Huh? He threw 0tds and 6ints as a starter. If Texas wins @ Baylor Case deserves to start the bowl game. Case has yet to throw an int( bet you’ve never heard that before) and has yet to make mistake Ash frequently does. Ash’s last pass of his career to this point was an int versus Kstate and a pass not worthy of a HS QB much less Texas’. Case may not have the “skills”( though he can throw semi long, example the pass the mike davis into the wind versus Kstate) but what’s the point of having those if Ash can’t use them. Something about Case seems to have the team’s confidence perhaps its a McCoy thing?

by Mclovin1035 on Nov 28, 2011 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

fumbles

don’t forget about Case’s fumbles in the pocket… those were just as bad as ints but don’t show up on the normal QB stat list.

Well said about this being a special win

Since USC, the only game I can remember feeling this good about was 45-35 in 2008. I’ve never been big on our rivalry with the cadets, but I didn’t need to spend my remaining years hearing about, “Yeah, and not only won’t you play us again, but we won the last one.” That alone might have caused the big cigars to find a way to get A&M back on the schedule.

Best of all, though, I was so thrilled with our comeback, our hustle and effort, our non-stop high level of trying . . . especially with our mostly first- and second-year kids facing a mostly veteran A&M team.

Yum. We’ve had our conversations about guys like this in the past. Basically, the gist is I think UT can start a revolution on the DL with guys like Magee and Ridgeway that are Marcell Dareus or Melvin Ingram-like in that they can dominate at both DT and DE given the situation. If UT can close on Magee and Arik Armstead, two such players, we can look at playing four of these hybrid players (Ced Reed is this type as well) at the same time on the DL. 275-295-ish players who can run stuff a decent amount and pass rush from any spot on the line. Love to see what Diaz could do with guys like that.

Problem is

Case does not have the mentality of a game manager, for good or bad. He’s a playmaker through and through. He hasn’t bulked up in all of his time here, but he needs to buff up under Wiley for sure this offseason because A) he’s going to take a lot of hits with his willy-nilly playing style and B) he needs to get his arm strength to at least Colt’s freshman level.

When Jeffcoat went out with the minor injury, Reggie Wilson replaced him. I found that pretty interesting. I think Jeffcoat would move over to strong side end and Wilson would slide into the quick end spot should Oak leave.

I am stoked for Sheroid Evans

From his tapes, I never understood how he was so fast on the track. But seeing him obliterate everybody down the field in that Diggs return against A&M, I could see the sprinter’s speed he has. Godlike speed. Plus he can probably play both safety and CB, so he’d fit right in with Diggs, AP, and Vaccaro.

My Father-in-law

Was in the Corps at A&M, yet his wife and 2 daughters went to UT. My wife and I hosted thanksgiving dinner for the first time ever and set up a sweet viewing station in our backyard complete with fire pit and comfy chairs for all.
My FIL is decked out in his A&M leather boots, Wranglers, maroon button down shirt, Aggie hat… Dressed to his Aggie 9s. We watch the entire game in perfect harmony… Until the Tucker FG goes right down the middle. FIL stands up, walks inside and I think nothing of it as I am out of my mind celebrating ( also 3 sheets to the wind). Next thing I know I hear him laying on the horn in my frontyard beckoning my mother in law in the rudest fashion possible. All I could think of is how damn satisfying this was and I’ll never forget it. F the Angie’s and all their aggie backassward ways.

DGB's quotes from a recent interview with the Sporting News, comments on Johnathan Gray

"I’m just taking visits and stuff right now, but I haven’t picked the school just yet," Green-Beckham said. "I’m pretty much wide open and taking visits. The pressure of it all, sometimes I get sick of it, but sometimes it’s fun to experience it. But I mean, I’m not really too picky about the pressure because I know how to handle it, and I let everything just fly by."

Green-Beckham’s recruitment has been one of the biggest secrets of recent recruiting years. His family doesn’t want it to become a circus, so they rarely provide status updates. In fact, Green-Beckham basically slipped into Austin last week for an official visit with the Longhorns. Not many people knew about it until he was recognized sitting next to one of Texas’ top recruits, RB Johnathan Gray.

"He’s a real chill dude," Green-Beckham said of Gray. "I hung out with him a little bit while I was out there and I like being around him. He’s outgoing, he’s funny and he just likes to have fun. You can just talk football with him. We talked about having a great high school career. His rushing has been amazing. He said he’d been hearing a whole lot about me, and we talked a whole lot about the game of football."

Defense next year

I think Kennan is bigger loss than people think. He’s really come on recently. Acho is an extremely tough loss. Even in the losses, Acho has played at an elite level. Great player.

Cobbs will need to step up, as will Steve Edmond. I’m confident both will do so, but how soon?

I think getting Brandon Moore could really help the Texas DL transition after Randall.

I don’t think Texas can replace Vaccaro. Phillips, Evans and Thompson are excellent players but there will be growing pains.

I don't

Assuming that Okafor and Vaccaro stay, I think this defense will be better next year then they were this year.

Better secondary. Better line. Linebackers drop a little but not enough to drop the aggregate. Plus, I just think Manny, Bo Davis, and Akina are amazing and will continue to wreck shop now that the kids understnad the D.

If both leave, we may see a drop-off. But if both stay, I think we are better next year as a whole.

DL

losing Kheeston will hurt. I like our young tackles, but they may need a half a season next yr to get to the level we need them.

by codaxx on Nov 28, 2011 10:54 AM CST up reply actions

True

They’re flashing this year, but none are producing at a consistent level like Kheeston is, be it because they are frequently rotated or are merely not ready to contribute every play yet.

I think the strong play of the DEs (and their run-stuffing ability) and Edmond’s ability to clean up the middle of the field will help the DTs out in the beginning of the season while they learn to be consistent. I just don’t see how a talented and diverse group like Howell, Jackson, Daniels, Whaley, Dorsey, MB2, and likely Brandon Moore doesn’t quickly register as at least positive for the D. Hell, stick Moore in the middle and just tell him to Hold the Line, Toto style.

Why do you think points will go up?

Defense will be expected to be better overall and will be strong at the most important spots for the Big 12 (DE and secondary), and OU/OSU will not be as good on offense. Baylor could lose Griffin. The only reason I could see for points against to go up is WVU and TCU next year have a slight advantage offensively over A&M and Mizzou this year.

David Ash

Why is everyone so down on Ash? He’s an 18 year old kid who realisticly shouldn’t even be playing. It’s not like he was the top QB in the nation. He obviously has talent or they wouldn’t have let me him start.

And if I can slide this in I don’t understand all the hype on Tyrone Swoopes. Whitewright was one of my rivals in high school and my old school beat them this year pretty bad. He plays in a terribly weak district and only does well running. He’s not that great of a thrower and this is all on the 2A level.

by matt103455 on Nov 27, 2011 5:59 PM CST reply actions

Ash / Swoopes

Ash should have been redshirted. I still have my concerns about his decision making and accuracy. At the end of the day, Texas’ passing game will be about hitting open receivers next year. Case can probably do that better.

I like Swoopes and Barrett a lot. Harsin has a tough evaluation in front of him. Both run a lot more than than pass right now. I’d suggest Harsin work both out again before making a decision on who to offer.

Landing Hawkins could be HUGE. Hawkins will have a much bigger immediate impact than Peat. Hawkins could start right away at OT for Texas and allow Hopkins to move back inside. Cochran, Hopkins, Espinosa, Walters, Hawkins is maybe the best OL in the conference.

My understanding on the current bowl situation is that OSU really doesn't have a shot at the NC game

with Bama ensconced at #2….even if they beat OU. So we have the Fiesta, Cotton and Alamo as our top 3 bowls. OSU, OU, and K State will get these bowls. It appears our best hope is the Insight or Holiday, with Meinecke and pinstripe if we lose to Baylor.

Have I missed something ?

Alamo Bowl has the second selection...

after BCS and Cotton Bowl. I do not think they have to take the third place team. This was one of Missouri’s big gripes – Texas would be taken ahead of teams that finished lower in the conference standings. The bowls want the teams that bring the crowds and TV audiences.

I agree

If it’s the Insight it’ll be one of the 3 Big Ten teams mentioned.

If it’s the Alamo it will be a Pac 12 team. I think Stanford gets an at large BCS bid. Oregon in the Rose Bowl. I think Washington or Cal would be the most likely opponents with the outside chance that Stanford gets jobbed.

Texas can and probably should beat all the teams mentioned with the exception of Stanford.

I don’t think Mike as a starter is a given if any of this year’s or next year’s freshmen step up and show they can catch. Davis is a major disappointment. He reminds me of James Kirkendoll.
He would make a dynamic play but drop easy balls in crunch situations. Mike has not put out the effort.

He sucked the entire A&M game, then had the gall to bail on that pass toward the end of the game (the bad personal foul call against Aggie). Jaxon is the only WR we can trust right now. Our offices are predominately aggy

Heavy on engineering, and lots of aggy engineers.

I am going in with my head high & smiling. Debating whether to write the score on my whiteboard though, like 1 young aggy in the vicinity did after last year’s game.

"This is a devastating loss for our team," Texas A&M coach Mike Sherman said.

Texas A&M safety Trent Hunter, who had the 15-yard penalty on the Longhorns' winning drive, said players were crying in the locker room after the loss. "This is by far the most painful loss I've had since I've been here," Hunter said. "It's one of those things that we're going to have to live with for a while since Texas and Texas A&M aren't playing again."

Next yr's offense

would love your thoughts on how our offense will look next yr and how much an improvement it will be under yr 2 under Harsin’s system?

by jtdoes on Nov 27, 2011 6:43 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Offense next year

Should be better. The offense is even younger than the defense. I expect the skill positions to get much better, and the QB play to improve. Adding Gray is a tremendous addition. Texas will have a true home run threat who can also carry the ball 25 times a game. Very versatile. I expect the red zone offense to be much better. The return of a devastating Wildcat formation, the addition of Thomas Johnson on jet sweeps, and Cayleb Jone’s ability on jump balls will help in the red zone.

Hawkins appears to have NFL upside, and can start right away. He’s had a few years in the weight room and plenty of experience at the JUCO level. I expect an immediate impact from Hawkins should he commit to Texas.

Shipley is so important in the offense because of his ability to adjust to poorly thrown balls. This is where Cayleb can come in and help right away.

Mike unfortunately hasn’t caught many of the poorly thrown balls. He’ll catch if they can drop it in his bread basket, but if the pass is behind him or late, it’s given him a lot of trouble.

2013 needs

Texas needs to continue to rebuild their OL. After the 2013 class, Texas should have the horses to make us forget about MacWhorter.

DE is a pretty glaring need. MLBs are always difficult to find in state, so Brett Wade is a very important recruit. Texas must get an impact TE.

To answer your question, TE is the biggest need. Texas needs to land either RSJ or Griffin. I believe Morgan is a take also to do the dirty work in Harsin’s offense.

Funny how it was a gut punch to lose Muschamp only to be upgraded by a brilliant Defensive mind. I am a Hicks fan and I think he can turn into an All-American under Diaz. However, yesterday I didn’t hear his name called much on tackles. To me it seems like the D is taking a step or two forward and Hicks is taking a step back. What could be slowing down his progression?

I hope that he can get a redshirt… put a little space between him and the current Seniors (Robinson and Acho).

That would make him a Sophomore next year instead of a Junior with Hicks. Then we would have Hicks (Jr.), Edmond (Soph.), and either Tevin Jackson (Soph.) or Cobbs (Soph.).

We really don’t need Cobbs this year, and if a redshirt is possible that’s what I would like to see.

Top recruiter at Texas

They’re all good recruiters. Some are stronger evaluators, some are better with kids and coaches. Bruce Chambers is the most frequently criticized, but nobody can slap backs at DFW high schools like Coach Chambers. Kind of like Coach Wyatt, he knows EVERYBODY north of Houston.

Sally Brown is the top recruiter at Texas. Yes I’m serious, win the family, get the kid. Mothers and siblings LOVE Sally.

I always thought

that the worst QB to ever step foot on the football field as a starter was Richard Walton… now it is without a doubt Case McCoy. This guy is terrible IMO and we are always going to be a 5 loss team with him at the helm.

by chupita on Nov 27, 2011 8:43 PM CST up reply actions

Concerning Diaz or Harsin leaving

I am optimistic they will stay for awhile. They both are young. I believe Diaz is only in his second year as a coordinator at a Big 6 conference school, and Harsin in his first.

I realize they have credentials, that’s why they got hired here. But most big time schools don’t turn over the HC position to someone without a fair amount of big time experience. With what we can pay assistants, it is not really an upward move to take the HC job at a mid-major school, unless you really burn to be the head man.

Going from being a hot commodity as a coordinator at Texas to possibly a losing record at a C-USA school could change your career trajectory in a hurry. Better to wait until the really good job opens up.

I don’t worry about coaches leaving after this off season.Texas made good hires once, they can do it again. If coaches leave that’s good because it means Texas is winning. That being said, I think Searels, Davis, Akina and Manny are the most difficult to replace.

My sentiments exactly

We are going to lose good coaches who will move up at their next job. Much as we hate to see them leave, it comes with the territory. The ones who can’t get a better job are more the problem.

At least we don’t have coaches leaving to be at the same position at another school.

O line issues?

Bill, to my untrained eye, it seems the the O line play has been a major factor in our struggles this year. With better blocking, the QBs have more time to make decisions downfield, and it gives the RBs better lanes. I have noticed O line problems for years (although I have nothing concrete to point at), but those issues were masked by Vince & Colt’s ability to get positive yards from broken plays. Am I wrong, and if not, what’s it gonna take to get better up front?

DE

I am less worried about this spot than most. It would be nice to find a pass rushing DE, but it isn’t necessary for success. It was when we had randle and question marks. We have 2 tackles that can pressure the QB, one is a true freshman and whaley is the other. I think whaley is the most likely Horn to be a lottery pick. Tackles just don’t move like that, he has no ceiling. If your interior can be pass rushing threat it makes life very easy at DE. We have time to develop someone there

by codaxx on Nov 27, 2011 9:27 PM CST via mobile reply actions

I like what I’ve seen from Ced Reed. He can be a good DE for Texas. We’re not really sure what Reggie Wilson can with extensive playing time. Bluiett has a lot of upside. Ridgeway’s senior film is filthy, but he’s a project.

As some of the posters and TXStampede pointed out, Texas was in nickel for much of the TAMU game. Jordan has also been dinged for much of the season.

Impact defensive recruits: Malcom Brown for sure. Brandon Moore will probably start next season. I think Ridgeway could see playing time. Peter Jinkens should beast on special teams.

Not to worry about our O line

You will see that Snow had a monster game. He was just a beast on Browns run to the aggys 1 yd. line. That dude is a MAN!

At the beginning of the season the big worry was the O line. I am mightily impressed with the performance of the O line now. Don’t be concerned about the aggy game. Aggy, like KSU, had little regard for our QB’s and our passing offense – they simply stacked the box all night.
By being one dimensional, we made their defense look special – they weren’t.

Don't think our O Line will be a problem in future

Except for the Ousux game, it has been awesome seeing our O line play some smash mouth football. Been awhile since we have seen that around here. Coach Searles is proving his worth and next year should become a strength of our team. As long as the pass blocking improves, we will see improved qb play, regardless of who the qb is. Everything improves with good/great O line: qb,rb,wr,te turning average players into good players.

Two questions 1) latest word on RGIII playing? I would like to see how our defense measures up against someone that is a tremendous dual threat qb and 2) Baylor seems to be on the verge of becoming a good program. Are any big name recruits looking at Baylor more than in the past?
