Applewhite and Akina?
I am concerned that UT may lose the AA's during the offseason.
Akina and Applewhite, IMO are the best coaches on the entire Longhorns coaching staff and both are in conversations for jobs at Florida and Hawaii.
Losing Applewhite would be a huge blow to our recruiting abilities, as he pretty much held the 2010 recruiting class together. I don't understand how Applewhite isn't already our offensive coordinator and it would be a horrible loss if Muschamp snagged him for their offensive coordinator.
Akina has done nothing short of an amazing job at UT as DB's coach. His heart seems to be in Hawaii and this could be his best opportunity to get back home and eventually finish his career as a head coach at the Golden Warriors.
I wish the best for the two of them, but definitely don't want to lose the two best coaching talent on our team.

Hopefully
the potential of what is in place with the players we have coming into the program would make that decision difficult enough to keep Major in Austin for a couple of more years.

Applewhite and Akina
For the sake of the program we had better hope that we do not lose these great coaches.
Major may be the best recruiter in the nation and look how many “DB’s” coach Akina has
sent on to the NFL.
I think
Muschamp had too much respect for Mack to take coaches from his staff last year. I really don’t think Applewhite had an offer from Florida last year.
Keeping It Real
If Will hired an OC from one of the worst offenses in the country those flames under his arse would be turned up to an unbearable degree. The Gator Nation will not take the time to analyze the fact that Major is a heckuva coach. Major + a down offense next year would make Will’s career at Florida exactly 2 seasons.

Well,
Nick Saban had enough faith in Major to offer him the job as an offensive coordinator at Alabama.
And to blame Major for the offensive disaster that Texas had this year is laughable. Major doesn’t call the plays at all. That would be Harsin.
Major coaches the RB’s, which looked very good now that he was able to get his guys in the mix.
Plus, don’t underestimate the power of probably our absolute best recruiting weapon on the UT staff.
I think you missed the point...
Its not that Applewhite isn’t a quality candidate for Florida. Its that Florida fans will only look at the 2010 and 2011 results for the Texas offense, and conclude that he’s a poor hire whether he is or not. And that will turn the heat up on Muschamp .
No, I got it
I just don’t subscribe to that thinking at all. Major has NEVER been the offensive coordinator for UT. All realistic football fans know that, and the coaching job is being managed by Muschamp… not the fans.
The possibility that Major will leave is real… and I hope to god he doesn’t. IMO he should be our OC right now.
If Saban trusted him with his offense, then I can assure you that many coaches would do the same.
Not Knocking Major
Just saying:
1. Will is not Saban. He doesn’t have the clout or the stability.
2. Texas offfense sucked. Not saying Major’s fault, but when you are the second offensive coach on a bad offense it will not make you a consensus pick for the OC of an SEC team.
3. No way Major goes to Florida.

To your point
God I hope you are right.
I will say that Major did a great job at Rice when he did have full controls of the offense. And his recruiting abilities in the state of Texas have to be appealing to anyone considering an Offensive Coordinator.
He is a Real Asset
Plus he is trusted by Mack and relates well with Hairsin. Works the recruiting trail like a witch – from what I am told – sole reason that Quandre Diggs is on the roster.

Saban trusted him to coach up the offense, but reportedly didn't let Major call plays
And nudged him out the door after a year. Major obviously wasn’t what Saban wanted at OC. I don’t think Major’s a bad coach, but he’s certainly not proven by any stretch.

well,
neither was Muschamp. Yet, there he is… head coach of the Florida Gators.
See how that works.
He at least experienced a great deal of success as a D for both Auburn and Texas
Whereas Applewhite’s success so far was at Rice.

keep in mind-
Applewhite didn’t get to call plays at Alabama, either. He was an OC in name only.
Speaking of Major, watching the 2001 Holliday Bowl on ESPN Classic right now. Horns down 30-14, but I have a good feeling! Ha ha.
Norm Chow was announnced the head coach at Hawaii today
Or was I mistaken? I very well could be wrong about that.

Truth
I’ve also heard rumors that Akina may be in the conversation for DC there, but my guess is that it wouldn’t happen…
When can relax and know that our coaching staff is secure for the upcoming season???!!??

Akina would have to take a pay cut to become DC at Hawaii
Losing assistants is a reality. If you don’t lose them (McWhorter, Davis, Kennedy), it probably means other HCs and ADs don’t have much respect for the coach.
If they don’t like our assistants, there’s probably a reason . . . 5-7
If they like them, we get to hire pretty much anybody we like . . . $$$
Not to mention
cost of living in Hawaii is exponentially higher than it is in Austin.

Yet,
people do it every day with less monetary benefits than what Akina will be making.
At the end of the day, sometimes being close to your original home is worth it to you. He would be FAR from living paycheck to paycheck in Oahu
Isn't UH just the Warriors now?
They were the Rainbows, I think, and then the Rainbow Warriors, but now I think they’re just the Warriors.
Anyway, I don’t think Applewhite’s irreplaceable as a coach, but his value as a fan favorite, program guy, and recruiter make me hope he stays forever.
Akina’s the best at what he does of any assistant Texas has had in my memory, and I hope Texas can convince him that the status quo is better than a DC position back home.

Major if the co-OC at Texas
He will probably be the OC in a couple years. I doubt he will go anywhere unless he’s the HC.
Akina may leave but I’m confident Mack will get another good coach.. I heard Diaz would coach the secondary and hire an SEC LB coach.
Akina
I love being known as DBU. It makes us a powerful defense given all the great QBs we play against. Without Akina we are good but not great in the secondary. As for Applewhite. I love him. I don’t know what he does on the trail or for the offense but I love him anyway.

Norm Chow
Now that that’s been settled with Chow being selected as HC at Hawaii, we can settle back and dream of what he’ll be able to do with another year of Bennie’s S&C and the spring season.
