Sundays with Bill, Holiday Bowl Pre Game Edition
Having trouble getting up for the Holiday Bowl? Texas won't play another game until September 1 and it's against Wyoming. Take another look at the home schedule next year, and you'll get where you need to be for the Holiday Bowl. It's a big game, against a good opponent. Period. On to the chat.
Talking points:
* The Holiday Bowl: What to expect. Bergeron and Shipley return to health, Malcolm Brown is getting there. Manny Diaz has had 3 weeks to draw a game plan. Good luck Cal.
* DGB and Mario Edwards update. Remaining targets. What's the hold up with additional offers? I'll explain.
* 2013 Junior Days look to be one of Texas' best. Which blue chips might commit?
* Jake Raulerson had a very Merry Christmas, was Bevo under the tree?

I'm in place let's get it started
If you look on Twitter feed, there’s a picture of Raulerson throwing up the Hook ’Em in a Santa hat. Please post here. I apologize for being technologically challenged.

Great pic of Raulerson
So do you think Mack will have a change of plans/heart with a possibility of snatching up Bo Wallace, or are we just going to rely on McAsh
I think it will depend on the QB play in the Holiday Bowl
I believe Texas would rather not take a JUCO or graduate transfer, but if McCoy and Ash don’t show improvement in the Holiday Bowl, they might have to.
A McCoy transfer would definitely make a JUCO / graduate QB more likely.
Oh Connor Wood, you could be the starter right now son.

Raulerson did move from Florida
Florida’s program isn’t in a good place and Raulerson doesn’t seem as interested in Florida. I don’t think Florida is a true rival for Raulerson at this point. That could change if Raulerson isn’t committed to Texas after February.

DGB and Mario
If you had to guess, where would you think they’d end up?
Predictions
I think DGB will end up at Texas.
I’m on the fence about Super Mario.

It's interesting
Orangebloods is more confident about Super Mario. While Hook Em 247 is more confident about DGB. While the ’Cosm is confident on both.

which one do you think is more needed?
by GooberSmoocher on Dec 26, 2011 7:18 PM CST up reply actions
DGB
I explained why DGB is so important to reporter that works in Springfield, MO. DGB can be Texas’ Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson. By that I mean, a dynamic player that goes on to have a big NFL career that recruits look up to and aspire to be.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:34 PM CST up reply actions
Awesome
Dude if the ’Horns/Mack and land the #1 and #2 WR in the country along with the #1 RB in the country with a QB that has a high ceiling, this team looks dangerous for the next 2-5 years.
Would be a historic class if DGB and/or Mario Edward picks Texas.

most fsu sites

I wouldn't be if I were a FSU fan
Sure he’s still committed, but definitely looking around. Also FSU, isn’t playing in the BCS. FSU definitely under performed this season.

Iron Law of Recruiting: 99% of Fans are Homers
Every team’s fanbase is going to be more optimistic about their chances with any given prospect than is probably warranted. So it generally doesn’t mean anything when fans are super confident about their chances with a player.
Is there any news of any top Texas recruits buying a plane ticket for the Holiday Bowl.
Or is that something that usually isn’t done
I haven't heard that BUT
Recruits can go to the game on their own dime.
In another line of thought, California has been producing TEs at an impressive rate. I feel strongly that Texas should look to Cali for TEs. Maybe an underclassmen takes in a Texas game in San Diego.

That's where I think Petersen would be a good grab in the future for the coaching job
It seems a good portion of his teams are from So. Cal
Boise lives and dies with Cali recruits
Starting to recruit and get more and more State of Texas kids.

Good question
Get ready for it, Texas appears to be evaluating NATIONALLY for a 2013 RB. I hope Altee Tenpenny is included in that evaluation. I’m good with either Keith Ford or James White and Dontre Wilson as the running haul in 2013. James White’s junior film from Rivals.com is darn impressive.
Florida S Marcell Harris likely already has a Texas offer. The Horns are currently in his top 2.
There some other defensive lineman I think Texas will look at from OOS.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:17 PM CST up reply actions
Holiday Bowl
I think Texas will win by 7-10 points.Bergeron should have a big game. Shipley will make some plays. The defense gets a couple turnovers and bends, but doesn’t break. Okafor and Jeffcoat both have good games.
Diggs, Vaccaro, and Byndom all need to have big games.

Cal must be better than I think. I think the Texas will get a a good run game going. Kind of like the UCLA game.

I predict Ash will finally show what he is capable of and we windup curb stomping Cal.
Hold on a minute while I put on my body armor.

Ash
I think he’s the fan and analysts’ favorite. A lot of people are rooting for him. I hope you’re right.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 9:01 PM CST up reply actions
I don't know about Ash but
I expect Texas to win convincingly. The combined record of the teams Cal beat is 31-56. Only Utah has a winning record. Going 3-1 at the end looks good until you consider the teams they beat – Washington State, Oregon State, and Arizona State. I see 31-14 Horns.

So, experts 1 and many
What’s the over and under on Mack next fall?
How many wins make him secure for 2013? How few for the Petersen watch to begin?
I think 10 wins is very possible given the schedule
Mack is safe. I don’t think the hot seat exists at Texas in the Mack Era.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:20 PM CST up reply actions
Bowden?
As much “coaching change” is talked about, would Mack hang around like Bowden or Joe Pa and pretty much coach and leave on his own terms. In other words will anyone ever have the balls to fire Mack Brown considering he took the program to another level.
I don't care for the Bowden comparison
Plenty of people are productive at Mack’s age. Bowden’s age when he got fired, well that’s a different matter. Mack is MUCH more involved than Bowden was before his dismissal.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 8:48 PM CST up reply actions
Moving on
Okay will anyone ever have the balls to fire Mack Brown considering what he has done with the program? I have heard talks of moving Mack to some sort of AD position as sort of a nice way to take away his head coaching duties. I personally like all the national attention to the team and don’t want Mack to leave. I just hope when the time comes, the transition doesn’t drag on.
Mack
I think when he does leave, it’ll be civil and organized. I don’t think Mack will take the AD job, he doesn’t seem to want it and DeLoss likes working even at his age.
I think Mack will go into broadcasting after he’s done coaching.

LHN
When he’s ready, I’d love to see Mack be point man for the LHN, easing the promotional burden on his successor and getting his own feet wet with respect to the ESPN grind.

so still think we will win the bowl game?
if so which players do you think have to step up and which players do you predict will have big games?
In The Morning To You
Yes I think Texas will win
Ash or McCoy needs to make at least one big play.
Bergeron and/or Brown need to have big games. Texas must punch it in the red zone.
Defense has to get pressure of course. The Cal running game doesn’t scare me, but they have an above average QB and some receivers that get behind our safeties. I think the secondary and pass rush must come up big.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:24 PM CST up reply actions
so the big question
do you think we will find any success running the ball against Cal. they do seem to have a solid defense
In The Morning To You
I think so
If Bergeron is 100% and Malcolm is close to that, Texas can throw 2 fresh dynamic running backs at Cal. Not to mention, the OL had a couple weeks to improve.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:30 PM CST up reply actions
my biggest worry is the line will have another Baylor performance

how would you judge the Searels hire?
personally i love the hire because he took a line that was a steaming pile of crap and turned it into a good unit (good most of the time)
In The Morning To You
I wasn't a fan of the Searels hire initially
But after reading stuff on him from LSU sites it seemed like a good hire.
Searels could possibly transform the Texas OL into the best in the conference. In about a year. Incredible job.

so how confident are you in a Texas win?
and do you have a score prediction? mine is 24-21 Texas
In The Morning To You
Texas has to hold Cal under 27 points IMO
I’m not confident Texas can drop much more than that on Cal.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 7:49 PM CST up reply actions
I picked Texas to win
And the Horns won’t win unless they approach 200 yards rushing. Yeah I think they’ll break it.

It will be interesting from a scheme standpoint
I think Cal will pack the box with 8 or 9, somebody is going to have to hit some passes.

If you had to look at one most improved area of the team I think it would be his group and that was absolutely critical this year for a winning season.. His player development schedule seems to be right on time. He has my vote for assistant of the year.

Look at the schedule
If there are some early departures to the NFL, not many teams on the schedule scare me. If Texas can get consistent QB play they’ll be in every game.
I think the redzone offense will be much better next year. Texas adds 3 players capable of running the Wildcat at a very high level.
The defense should also improve as the secondary grew up quite a bit this year.
I think Texas will have the best defense in the Big 12, and a top 2-3 OL.

Possible Junior Day Visitors
Tyrone Swoopes, J.T. Barrett, Kent Perkins, Samples, Jake Oliver, Raulerson, Keith Ford, Ricky Seals Jones, Dontre Wilson, A’Shawn Robinson, Justin Manning, Ishmael Wilson, Isiah Golden, Naashon Hughes, and Darius James.
Marcell Harris is possible, but he could visit during the Army All American Combine and be officially offered early.

Brewer has been great this year.
I think that says something about the young man and his leadership abilities. An added bonus is that recent video looks like he’s added some size in the last six months. Brewer knows what it takes to win and wants to surround himself with the best possible tools on offense to ensure success. Let’s hope Harsin has found a game changer instead of a game manager with this one.

WR's
I saw an ESPN write up on UT’s depth and scholarships for next year, and we are going to have 10 WR’s (11if DGB) for basically 2 spots. I know we will run at times 3 WR, but we will be a heavy run team in a pass pro formation with mostly 2 WR’s. It seems like a logjam is getting ready to happen.
Who do you see redshirting? Forsee any potentail problems?
WRs
There’s no guarantee Goodwin is with the team next year because of the Olympics. We should know more after the Olympics.
Hales will be a senior and none factor. So we’re back to 9.
Sanders can do more than just play WR, as can Thomas Johnson.
I think Harsin will use the WRs in packages that match their skill set. They’ll be enough plays to go around. This isn’t a traditional offense. It’s based on packages.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 8:04 PM CST up reply actions
Also, was that before or after the attrition? Marcus Johnson will RS, sanders might also as figures out his position.
We will play a bit in 3 WR sets.

WRs
I wouldn’t pencil any of the incoming freshman in as redshirts. Marcus Johnson looked pretty polished in his senior film. Great pick up.
Sanders might need a redshirt.
Johnson and Cayleb Jones won’t redshirt.
Obviously the Great One wouldn’t redshirt if he picks Texas.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 8:42 PM CST up reply actions
Agree no one is a definite RS but if DGB picks Texas!!!! The depth at WR is great and young, might make sense to RS for Johnson.
by TheContractor on Dec 26, 2011 9:24 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
Redshirting
I’ll say this, offensive players are much more likely to redshirt than defensive players. Texas seems to like to get their defenders out there on special teams early.
by billfromlaketravis on Dec 26, 2011 9:27 PM CST up reply actions
great point.
If the wr depth gets too deeply and players are seeing the field on offense. Alot of our recruits our athletes and play corner back aswell as safety to give us depth there. Our team was short on safetys so. Even the possibility of a qb like haven overstreet may play in the secondary. If DGB comes we could have him and shipley starting with mike Davis and maybe jonathon grey in the slot at times. All we need is a consistant qb. 55 to 67% completion next year and 10 games easy.
Why is taking a transfer QB contingent on McCoy's decision?
If his commitment is that tenuous, how do you go forward feeling secure in any case? Might as well add another option while you can, and if McCoy leaves, you’re no worse off than you started. Possibly better, depending on how you feel about McCoy.
McCoy
A transfer would be a catalyst for taking another QB.

#1 reason
Transfers and poor allocation. Since Colt left 2 true freshman have seen meaningful game time at Texas. School of Texas’s caliber should see true freshman QBs once every 10-20 yrs, not yearly. You develop QBs thru practice and red-shirting, not by throwing them in the deep end of the pool and seeing who swims

Personally...
I liked that Zabransky. Anyone that ruins Oklahoma’s holiday season is good by me.

from what I heard on bowl game.
Moore had six wins in 4 years vs BCS conference teams. If I were to guess, all of Colts wins except 6 wins were against BCS conference teams.
Big Bill
I’ve stated all along this year we are in Year One of a three year rebuilding process. Interested to see what you think about my assertion. Oddly enough, its not real popular with a lot of Longhorn fans.

Rebuilding
I think you’re not far off. Texas can win the conference next year, but I think contending for a national championship won’t happen until 2013.

Edwards optimism
Before i get my hopes too high, why does a guy who had a good time and enjoyed hanging out with other recruits go to being above a 50% chance? If he was not as happy on the other school visits, i would understand, but I don’t get why polling a different player for odds creates a high prob of him coming to Austin. Don’t get me wrong, I would be jumping for joy if he committed to UT, but i am trying to understand if there is more to it that him just being an outgoing person.

He really didn't enjoy his last trip to OU
Its was okay, but nothing compared to our banquet weekend.

Texas is the regional favorite
Edwards might not visit LSU, and his OU visit didn’t go all that well.
If it’s down to Texas and FSU, that’s the best shot we could possibly have.

Agreed
Especially considering where we stood two months ago.

Edwards
Texas had little to no shot a few months ago. I love our new position with Edwards.

Put yourself in his position
You make a trip to a town you’ve never been to, meet people you have never met, sleep in a strange bed in a strange room and wind up having fun and relaxing with new friends (fellow recruits) in an atmosphere that makes you feel at home so that you don’t feel uncomfortable.
Yeah, this happened to him and , yeah, I think he is damned sure leaning towards us for those very reasons!
Proud of your offense? Manny badger don't give a shit!
TCU in the Big 12 thoughts
I know this is unrelated, but I recently spent some time on campus.
First of all, the basketball stadium is going to scare the hell out of you. It looks like some kind of old domed building at the State Fair. Pretty nice on the inside though. Reminded me of Baylor.
The football stadium is being renovated. It reminded me of the Cotton Bowl, but smaller. I think it’ll be nice when it’s done, but I’m still concerned with seating capacity. I’d order tickets early DFW Texas fans.

CWS
Maybe with them in our conference, we wont have to worry much playing them in the Super Regionals.
Again.

TCU
I didn’t drop by the baseball stadium. Excellent baseball program, I know baseball gets lost in the realignment mess, but it will be bigger with every game on the LHN.

The TCU stadium scared the hell out of me.
We had seats in the upper deck of the west side and the angle was so steep that my wife climbed the stairs on her hands and knees because she was afraid to stand up.

Should have rented a Sherpa

LOL. Had a friend that played there back in the Norm Bulach days
he said running the stadium was a special terror unto itself and a punishment few wanted to endure for any reason.
TCU did what they had to do.
Its a minor miracle that the Big 12 still exists. As far as program quality (in pretty much all major sports), TCU is as good a fit as any name that was thrown out there. I see them beating Baylor, Tech, Oklahoma St., and Kansas next year. Honestly, if the ‘Frogs defense gets anywhere near what they were ’10, everyone could be trouble. Paschall developed nicely this year (makes me wonder why the hell Texas didn’t get after him) but they lose some leaders on D and Ed Wesley. Waymon James seems to be the real deal.
A well coached program that will perform.

Don't forget those fans from Oklahoma.
Now I have 3 trips to make (always try and catch a game in Austin, nothing like it, then RRS and now this! I’m happy)
MJ McFarland
How good will he be next year? Can he be the savior at the TE position?
McFarland
I don’t think he can be the savior, but he can help. If MJ can block and catch a couple passes in the middle of the field, he’ll be an upgrade to what Texas currently has at the position.

Everyone needs to pray that Ash looks better than adequat, because...
in my opinion and if he does, then DGB will be a lock.

I'd set DGB and Brewer up on a play date....see how that goes.

Texas could possibly be a destination per Gerry H. Any thoughts?

Not surewho Gerry is talking about but I think Texas might make a call to Devante Harris the CB.

My guesses
Based on need alone, my guesses for the mystery OU recruit are Baltimore, MD DE Charles Tapper or Tallahassee and FL TE Laith Harlow. I’m not very familiar with Tapper, but I like Harlow’s game quite a bit.

Interesting tidbit from JS and the Asset at InsideTexas
Finally, when I asked if Texas was going to come out ready to play he said yes. He claims Cal’s players have been talking a lot of “sh*t”, his words not mine, and that it’s wearing on our kids. He says the kids are ready to lace ‘em up and show them how we do it in Texas. Lots of state pride coming from the players this week The Asset says. We’ll see of course, but I thought that part of the report was interesting.

RUUUUUUUUUUDY!
Sounds like 2007 all over again when Texas mudstopped ASU. Kids got tired of hearing trash and came out to kill. I was convinced we would lose before the game but loved the outcome. Rallying point for our success in 2008 and 2009.
I am looking for a single quality seat.
Would rather try to find a ticket from fellow BONers than a scalper but I am hoping to find a great seat. PM me if you need to unload one. Thanks.
daje johnson?
Is it still true that once we give him an offer he will de commit from A&M and commit to us? Or how is that going? Where will he play on our team? Any news about DGB or Mario Edwards?
When did he commit to A&M
Did I miss something?
