Sundays with Bill, Holiday Bowl Pre Game Edition

Having trouble getting up for the Holiday Bowl? Texas won't play another game until September 1 and it's against Wyoming. Take another look at the home schedule next year, and you'll get where you need to be for the Holiday Bowl. It's a big game, against a good opponent. Period. On to the chat.
Talking points:
* The Holiday Bowl: What to expect. Bergeron and Shipley return to health, Malcolm Brown is getting there. Manny Diaz has had 3 weeks to draw a game plan. Good luck Cal.
* DGB and Mario Edwards update. Remaining targets. What's the hold up with additional offers? I'll explain.
* 2013 Junior Days look to be one of Texas' best. Which blue chips might commit?
* Jake Raulerson had a very Merry Christmas, was Bevo under the tree?
"Oh my God, the quarterback is TOAST!"

If you look on Twitter feed, there’s a picture of Raulerson throwing up the Hook ’Em in a Santa hat. Please post here. I apologize for being technologically challenged.

Great pic of Raulerson

So do you think Mack will have a change of plans/heart with a possibility of snatching up Bo Wallace, or are we just going to rely on McAsh

by kcmorse on Dec 26, 2011 7:08 PM CST reply actions

I think it will depend on the QB play in the Holiday Bowl

I believe Texas would rather not take a JUCO or graduate transfer, but if McCoy and Ash don’t show improvement in the Holiday Bowl, they might have to.

A McCoy transfer would definitely make a JUCO / graduate QB more likely.

Oh Connor Wood, you could be the starter right now son.

Raulerson did move from Florida

Florida’s program isn’t in a good place and Raulerson doesn’t seem as interested in Florida. I don’t think Florida is a true rival for Raulerson at this point. That could change if Raulerson isn’t committed to Texas after February.

I explained why DGB is so important to reporter that works in Springfield, MO. DGB can be Texas’ Calvin Johnson or Adrian Peterson. By that I mean, a dynamic player that goes on to have a big NFL career that recruits look up to and aspire to be.

Dude if the ’Horns/Mack and land the #1 and #2 WR in the country along with the #1 RB in the country with a QB that has a high ceiling, this team looks dangerous for the next 2-5 years.

Iron Law of Recruiting: 99% of Fans are Homers

Every team’s fanbase is going to be more optimistic about their chances with any given prospect than is probably warranted. So it generally doesn’t mean anything when fans are super confident about their chances with a player.

by bigdukesix on Dec 28, 2011 10:23 AM CST up reply actions

I haven't heard that BUT

Recruits can go to the game on their own dime.

In another line of thought, California has been producing TEs at an impressive rate. I feel strongly that Texas should look to Cali for TEs. Maybe an underclassmen takes in a Texas game in San Diego.

Good question

Get ready for it, Texas appears to be evaluating NATIONALLY for a 2013 RB. I hope Altee Tenpenny is included in that evaluation. I’m good with either Keith Ford or James White and Dontre Wilson as the running haul in 2013. James White’s junior film from Rivals.com is darn impressive.

Florida S Marcell Harris likely already has a Texas offer. The Horns are currently in his top 2.

There some other defensive lineman I think Texas will look at from OOS.

Holiday Bowl

I think Texas will win by 7-10 points.Bergeron should have a big game. Shipley will make some plays. The defense gets a couple turnovers and bends, but doesn’t break. Okafor and Jeffcoat both have good games.

As much “coaching change” is talked about, would Mack hang around like Bowden or Joe Pa and pretty much coach and leave on his own terms. In other words will anyone ever have the balls to fire Mack Brown considering he took the program to another level.

I don't care for the Bowden comparison

Plenty of people are productive at Mack’s age. Bowden’s age when he got fired, well that’s a different matter. Mack is MUCH more involved than Bowden was before his dismissal.

Moving on

Okay will anyone ever have the balls to fire Mack Brown considering what he has done with the program? I have heard talks of moving Mack to some sort of AD position as sort of a nice way to take away his head coaching duties. I personally like all the national attention to the team and don’t want Mack to leave. I just hope when the time comes, the transition doesn’t drag on.

by pelon7900 on Dec 26, 2011 8:55 PM CST up reply actions

Mack

I think when he does leave, it’ll be civil and organized. I don’t think Mack will take the AD job, he doesn’t seem to want it and DeLoss likes working even at his age.

In The Morning To You

by horns1025 on Dec 26, 2011 7:18 PM CST reply actions

Yes I think Texas will win

Ash or McCoy needs to make at least one big play.

Bergeron and/or Brown need to have big games. Texas must punch it in the red zone.

Defense has to get pressure of course. The Cal running game doesn’t scare me, but they have an above average QB and some receivers that get behind our safeties. I think the secondary and pass rush must come up big.

Look at the schedule

If there are some early departures to the NFL, not many teams on the schedule scare me. If Texas can get consistent QB play they’ll be in every game.

I think the redzone offense will be much better next year. Texas adds 3 players capable of running the Wildcat at a very high level.

The defense should also improve as the secondary grew up quite a bit this year.

I think Texas will have the best defense in the Big 12, and a top 2-3 OL.

WR's

I saw an ESPN write up on UT’s depth and scholarships for next year, and we are going to have 10 WR’s (11if DGB) for basically 2 spots. I know we will run at times 3 WR, but we will be a heavy run team in a pass pro formation with mostly 2 WR’s. It seems like a logjam is getting ready to happen.

Who do you see redshirting? Forsee any potentail problems?

by 4horns on Dec 26, 2011 7:56 PM CST reply actions

WRs

There’s no guarantee Goodwin is with the team next year because of the Olympics. We should know more after the Olympics.

Hales will be a senior and none factor. So we’re back to 9.

Sanders can do more than just play WR, as can Thomas Johnson.

I think Harsin will use the WRs in packages that match their skill set. They’ll be enough plays to go around. This isn’t a traditional offense. It’s based on packages.

great point.

If the wr depth gets too deeply and players are seeing the field on offense. Alot of our recruits our athletes and play corner back aswell as safety to give us depth there. Our team was short on safetys so. Even the possibility of a qb like haven overstreet may play in the secondary. If DGB comes we could have him and shipley starting with mike Davis and maybe jonathon grey in the slot at times. All we need is a consistant qb. 55 to 67% completion next year and 10 games easy.

by susuata on Dec 27, 2011 2:20 AM CST up reply actions

Why is taking a transfer QB contingent on McCoy's decision?

If his commitment is that tenuous, how do you go forward feeling secure in any case? Might as well add another option while you can, and if McCoy leaves, you’re no worse off than you started. Possibly better, depending on how you feel about McCoy.

by a0nyme on Dec 26, 2011 7:57 PM CST reply actions

McCoy

A transfer would be a catalyst for taking another QB.

QB development

Why has the coaching staff struggled so much? Texas should at least have a serviceable game manger.

by ninjarobotpirat on Dec 26, 2011 8:15 PM CST reply actions

#1 reason

Transfers and poor allocation. Since Colt left 2 true freshman have seen meaningful game time at Texas. School of Texas’s caliber should see true freshman QBs once every 10-20 yrs, not yearly. You develop QBs thru practice and red-shirting, not by throwing them in the deep end of the pool and seeing who swims

by codaxx on Dec 26, 2011 8:22 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Edwards optimism

Before i get my hopes too high, why does a guy who had a good time and enjoyed hanging out with other recruits go to being above a 50% chance? If he was not as happy on the other school visits, i would understand, but I don’t get why polling a different player for odds creates a high prob of him coming to Austin. Don’t get me wrong, I would be jumping for joy if he committed to UT, but i am trying to understand if there is more to it that him just being an outgoing person.

You make a trip to a town you’ve never been to, meet people you have never met, sleep in a strange bed in a strange room and wind up having fun and relaxing with new friends (fellow recruits) in an atmosphere that makes you feel at home so that you don’t feel uncomfortable.

TCU in the Big 12 thoughts

I know this is unrelated, but I recently spent some time on campus.

First of all, the basketball stadium is going to scare the hell out of you. It looks like some kind of old domed building at the State Fair. Pretty nice on the inside though. Reminded me of Baylor.

The football stadium is being renovated. It reminded me of the Cotton Bowl, but smaller. I think it’ll be nice when it’s done, but I’m still concerned with seating capacity. I’d order tickets early DFW Texas fans.

by whills on Dec 27, 2011 2:16 PM CST up reply actions

TCU did what they had to do.

Its a minor miracle that the Big 12 still exists. As far as program quality (in pretty much all major sports), TCU is as good a fit as any name that was thrown out there. I see them beating Baylor, Tech, Oklahoma St., and Kansas next year. Honestly, if the ‘Frogs defense gets anywhere near what they were ’10, everyone could be trouble. Paschall developed nicely this year (makes me wonder why the hell Texas didn’t get after him) but they lose some leaders on D and Ed Wesley. Waymon James seems to be the real deal.

A well coached program that will perform.

Interesting tidbit from JS and the Asset at InsideTexas
Finally, when I asked if Texas was going to come out ready to play he said yes. He claims Cal’s players have been talking a lot of “sh*t”, his words not mine, and that it’s wearing on our kids. He says the kids are ready to lace ‘em up and show them how we do it in Texas. Lots of state pride coming from the players this week The Asset says. We’ll see of course, but I thought that part of the report was interesting.
