Texas Beats Demons...and Cal 21-10

8-5 sure sounds better than 7-6. That was a big brick the team laid on the rebuilding foundation in tonight's 2011 Holiday Bowl beating Cal 21-10.

Defense Defense Defense. Manny Diaz had four weeks to prepare for a mid-ranked offense and he proved his worth tonight. The Texas Longhorns forced five Cal turnovers, had six sacks on the night, a gazillion tackles for loss, etc., etc., etc.

Offensively, we found a way in the 2nd half to create enough momentum and big plays when it counted to score touchdowns. Most importantly answering on the next possession after Cal took a 10-7 lead in the 3rd quarter.

MVP honors went to outgoing middle linebacker Keenan Robinson and true freshman quarterback David Ash.

Congratulations to all the Seniors for pulling up their boot straps and rowing hard this season to help put Texas back on the winning track. Shoutout to Justin Tucker, Blaine Irby, Cody Johnson, Keenan Robinson, Emmanuel Acho, Blake Gideon, Fozzy Whitaker, David Snow, and all the rest. These guys deserve a ton of credit for their leadership and hard work. Good luck to them in their future endeavors.

We'll have more later on the details of the game. In the mean time, pop a top and celebrate another Bowl Game victory!

TEXAS FIGHT!

Hook 'em Horns!

Let me crunch the numbers here.

Linearly extrapolating, from 5, to 8, to 11 wins, I predict we’re BCS bound next season.

Great win.

Nice ...

He had a Sportscenter highlight with the hurdle-sack, but the rest of his night was up and down … so, I had mixed emotions. We need Machete back.

True ... he had some moments

But his penalties were head-scratching and he got faked out of his jock on a run in the second half … which was disappointing.

That play where he feel down was just bad

I laughed a little. He was about to detonate the guy, then waffled. Should have just kept going forward. If you miss you miss, too late to hesitate now.

Per the ESPN recap:

“Texas coach Mack Brown joked on Tuesday how much it still bugged him that Harrington caught a TD pass in the Ducks’ 35-30 win against Texas in the 2000 Holiday Bowl. The Oregon offensive coordinator then was Jeff Tedford, who has been Cal’s coach since 2002. Harrington now works for the Longhorn Network.”

Oh, wow, that is outstanding ...

Harsin just got some serious boss points with that call. I was wondering when he was going to start pulling them out. That was the same play, I think, that we used late in the BYU game, as well.

My son was watching with me in the first quarter and said, “I thought we fired Greg Davis,” and I laughed (even though I was pissed at the time).

Um, no.

He under threw Goodwin TWICE on sure touchdowns and missed Mike Davis twice on under thrown balls as well. This game could’ve (should’ve) been worse. Goodwin should have been MVP, he was open on every play that he didn’t run for a ton of yards. Should’ve had at least 3 TD receptions. Ash needs to refine his long ball.

by 40A on Dec 29, 2011 5:20 AM CST up reply actions

Agree he needs to refine it, but ...

There were several excellent throws, as well. I didn’t say perfect, or even “very nice.” I do think he deserves some credit, though. Best throw of the night was the one from the end zone that Marquise was barely out of bounds on. Great throw. It would have taken a relay man for Case to get it there like that.

by Distributor of the Football on Dec 29, 2011 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

He did look to have a little more touch than he's shown in the pass...

Rather than “going all out GG” and throwing everything as hard as he can and overthrowing everyone. Needs some more refining but I felt like it was improved. I did however joke that the TD to Goodwin was an overthrow on a 10 yd out Goodwin just happened to be in the right spot.

by LonghorninRaiderland on Dec 29, 2011 10:49 AM CST up reply actions

Fair enough.

But I think if he leads Goodwin on the throw you bring up he walks into the endzone.

I don’t think his long balls were even “nice”. He had one very good touch pass to Goodwin, but that was it long throw-wise. Maybe I’m being a bit harsh, but I don’t think so. We need those throws.

by 40A on Dec 29, 2011 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

Wasn't he Offensive MVP and not overall MVP???

Regardless, so proud of Ash’s progress. He hit some nice passes, stretched the field, and also showed good instincts knowing when to run and when to throw it away. He’s not Colt yet, but last night was huge show of maturity. I think Robinson sid it all on the LHN postgame…the team spent two weeks working on themselves, not doing to typical routine of planning for the opponent schemtically, which only happened when they got to San Diego. I think that showed on both sides of the ball, and it’s what championahip teams do….play your game and don’t worry about anyone else or let them dictate.

Once our backfield is healthy next season and the OL gets an offsean to get stronger and smarter we’re going to be sick. Congrats to the whole team!

Back away from the ledge.

Offense was pretty watered-down. You can’t do much as an OC with a frosh QB.

by 40A on Dec 29, 2011 5:21 AM CST up reply actions

It is what it is - we have, arguably, the worst offense in D1 football!

The first half of this game was a complete offensive embarrassment – and on national TV as well.

Cal stacked the box with up to 10 players on each play and we were like a deer in the headlights – and I am talking about our coaches.
Even a Jr. High coach reorganizes and makes adjustments to injuries and defensive formations. I would expect a major college coach to, at least, understand this.

I will concede that QB ineptness and crippling injuries have seriously hampered our offensive output, but it is up to the coaches to place our remaining players in a position to move the chains as best we can. I have seen no coaching evidence of this – just an effort to try to fit the round plug into the square hole.

Harsin looks out of his league and Applewhite does as well. In fact, I submit that Applewhite, as last years asst. OC and this years co – OC, has shown me squat as far as imkproving the offense. Macks greatest “fault” is loyalty to his coaches and maybe he is hanging onto another coach way too long in Applewhite – the Simms debacle probably still burns in him.

Harsin left the WAC and moved into a “big boy” conference and schedule and he hasn’t really shown me diddly as yet.

Here is hoping both of those coaches grow up by next year and have learned to accept responsibility for the failures of this year.

by Longhorn Doc on Dec 29, 2011 8:12 AM CST up reply actions

Well

Give him a year or two to get some of his players into the system that he wants, including the QB that he wants, and see what happens. Don’t understand the steep criticism in just a year in the system, especially given that the best QB we had was several months removed from his HS prom.

by TxHorns989 on Dec 29, 2011 9:28 AM CST up reply actions

The game plan last night was built around not turning the ball over

Especially early. Mission accomplished.

I would have liked to have seen him stick with the I formation runs a little more (kept going away from them after a couple successful runs) and run a true jet sweep, but overall I thought he actually called a pretty good game given what he had to work with and the fact that Cal’s defense matched up very well against our offense.

There were a number of drive killing mistakes in the first half in the form of drops and penalties that you can’t put on the play calling.

by Horncasting on Dec 29, 2011 9:36 AM CST up reply actions

Did you really watch the same game I did?

Play calling was appropriate to level of skill/command of offense of the QB. Defense won the game, no doubt, but the offense did what it needed to — no turnovers. There were enough deep throws that were close enough to scare Cal that the running game opened up some in the second half. Just like it was drawn up.

by dukeoforange on Dec 29, 2011 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

Drive in response to Cal TD perfect example

Gameplan was to minimize mistakes unless we got down, then the offense was opened up a little more.

by Horncasting on Dec 29, 2011 9:53 AM CST up reply actions

I do not get it

Early Texas offense was a disaster. Is what it is, but Ash seemed to change on that 10yd shipley completion. Then Harsin calls a great ply to Irby. Ash was completelt different guy from then on. Some nice balls, goodwin catch where he was out of bounds was on goodwin. Can’t just step out, should have been PI. Under throw to Davis on the trick play was hardly bad. Ash side stepped a defender through it and got hit. Let’s not forget Espinosa will be having tongan nightmares for weeks. That guy flat out abused him.

by codaxx on Dec 29, 2011 11:11 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

Anyone can design a game plan around not turning the ball over. I can and so can you.

Hand the ball off 3 times – punt! Keep repeating this over and over.

I read the article on Harsin as well – I just disagree with it. The proof of the pudding is on the field and everything else is just hyperbole! Look, I graduated from UT myslef and have burnt orange blood flowing though my veins. I could sip that Longhorn tea just like ya’ll do – unless the ugly truth hits me between the eyes.

I love the win and I think Ash showed GREAT promise and our defense was a beast!
All this bodes well for next year and I can only hope it convinced DGB to sign with us.

However, this was our 13th game and HarsinWhite has had four weeks to get this team ready. What was the coaches game plan when Cal stacked 10 players over the center? Did you see one?

Ash OR McCoy are college QB’s with at least 4 years of HS experience each. Surely, they can lob a damned dink pass over that 10 man front to a damned tackle eligable or, wait for it, an actual, recruited to UT, receiver?

Actually, I did see this – Shipley, a receiver, lobbed one to Ash for a TD. Do ya’ll see how that works?

Here is the reality of a University of Texas, talent laden, offense – loaded with hot shot, highly paid coaches and the best facilities money can buy – WE STUNK THE PLACE UP IN THE FIRST HALF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I.lay.the.blame.totally.at.the.feet.of.HarsinWhite! They are paid to roll with the punches and provide a better product than I saw – they didn’t do their job – grade F

by Longhorn Doc on Dec 29, 2011 1:41 PM CST up reply actions

SMH

I pointed out at BC that the play calling actually refutes your position that Harsin was running into the teeth of a stacked front during the 1st half. Go look at the play-by-play on ESPN.com. Hell, the second play of the game was a 5 yard pass. Your criticism of the play calling is as laughable as it is unwarranted.

Your premise that the offense is loaded with talent is also laughable. There is some talent there, but they all have FR or SO after their name on the roster. Snow is the single upperclassmen on the OL. That is the definition of a depleted roster. Goodwin is the only upperclassman WR. The other guys have talent, but good offenses always have a combination of talent and experience. No team in the Big XII would swap players with Texas on offense except Tech, Kansas, and ISU. In 2013 these guys will be on national award watch lists across the board but not this year.

Cal's run defense has been great against typical running teams

but has struggled against mobile QB’s. While Ash didn’t get a ton of yards running, he did have a few nice gains that got us to 2nd and 3rd and short (also picking up a 1st down that got negated by penalty), and I thought his running also helped slow down Cal’s pash rush a little and helped our RB’s later in the game.

I just wanted to see a little more straight-forward

power running. I understand they stacked the box, but it’s especially dumb to run slow-developing misdirection plays into that type of D. Give me 2nd and 8-9 instead of 2nd and 15. If you slip through the cracks of a stacked D, you’re gone. Plus, the OL is horrible at zone blocking. Their strength lies in a straight-ahead power scheme. I really thought, if B&B were truly healthy, we’d try to beat them up and wear them down.

Ash didn’t turn it over. That is how he contributed. He didn’t look at all his receivers, he didn’t throw great passes but he didn’t turn it over. That is not an MVP even under our current QB situation. I hope he improves this summer.

Nose Tackle Problems

Espinosa should practice all spring with a nose guard over him because every true one Texas has seen this year has eaten him alive. Cal walked past him into the backfield most of the game. He has talent and is solid against a 4-3, but true nose guard’s are devistating to him right now.

by Tejah on Dec 29, 2011 11:04 AM CST up reply actions

Nice win...

Defense was dominant against a better than average offense, 5 turnovers, 6 sacks, 7 yards rushing and under 200 yards total offense. Played fast and physical.

Ash took some steps forward. Cal crowded the box to make Ash beat them and he did. No turnovers, made some plays and just missed several others.

Those getting on Harsin forget how little he had to work with. We started true freshmen at every key offensive position (QB, RB, LT, WR) and 3 underclassmen on the OL. Agree with Jesse Palmer’s comment that we will be better at every offensive position in 2012.

by hh500 on Dec 29, 2011 8:04 AM CST reply actions

True Freshman

I think the improvement we saw from Ash in the bowl game is exactly what we wanted. He made much better decisions to throw the ball away and his accuracy was much improved. For example, that pass to Grant on 3rd down cutting across the field was underthrown the whole KSU game. The deep pass to Goodwin, while a little late, is a catchable ball that the receiver has to make. And I’m still not sure if Davis dropped two passes or they were bad throws. Overall, Ash looked much improved. If he shows as much improvement as he just did with 15 extra practices, next year will be a huge difference.

by Jrusso72 on Dec 29, 2011 8:05 AM CST reply actions

Both of those passes to Davis

Hit him square in the hands. Granted he was fully extended, and they would have classified as amazing catches if he came down with them, he still could have/should have made the catch both times. Top flight receivers like Blackmon would have come down with the ball. Heck, even Little Ship might have come down with at least one of them if not both.

…but the game is at 11am. Nothing signifies “successful season” like two unranked teams squaring off in a nearly-empty stadium at 9am Pacific time. Go Wildcats.

To err is human...but humans have such low standards.

11am start time?

Even better. Nap time for aggy is 1pm.

Case

He had to be disappointed about not getting any playing time but he didn’t show it. He looked really engaged with what was happening and I saw him encouraging Ash on a few occasions. Good for him. Whether it was just an act or not doesn’t really matter to me. I was glad to see the kid keep his head up and I’m curious as to what his next move is going to be.

really hope Case stays on

as a backup QB. If he leaves we are in QB depth trouble again.

Jeffcoat should have been mvp.

Was loving Jeffcoat last night

He was all over the field.

It's a time for egg nog and tequila.

by Burrito Electrico on Dec 29, 2011 10:27 AM CST up reply actions

I agree. Dude was unblockable. That's the Jeffcoat who signed with us.

I remember that play where he came up the field and had to immediately reverse field to catch Maynard who had escaped the pocket. He cut like a running back and caught a very mobile QB. Legit.

Props to Harsin

for calling Cody’s number consecutively in the red zone.

Musings

1. Hate to dump on Hairsin as it is difficult to overestimate the impact of the Fozzy injury. A chunk of creativity immediately went out the window.
2. Is it my imagination, but does Chris Whaley seem to make something happen every snap he is on the field?
3. Kudos to TX Stampede for calling out the senior leadership – not too many folks have recognized the kids that laid down some bricks this year.

Senior leadership

Just want to specifically add Kheeston Randall (not included in group in original post), who has been our rock on the middle for the better part of 4 seasons.

Perspective.

We have been spoiled….spoiled friggin’ rotten the last 8 years on offense. How many guys are we returning next year??? Half of our 0-Line are still just kids, 18-19 years old. The skill players are all Freshman/Sophomores. Jeffcoat, Okafor, and Hicks coming back and Howell made some good plays last night as well. Not to mention the incoming recruiting class. Gray is gonna be sick, and we have some promising receivers coming in (with DGB on the fence still). This team has good momentum going and the entire off season to get bigger/stronger/faster (que techno music) and really digest the playbook. Looking forward to next year. With all the injuries to key players, last night was an appropriate way to end the season. The offense did what they needed to do to win the game, which was not lose it because of turnovers. Thank you Defense (would have been nice to see a pick 6 though).

Can't See DGB

Coming to this offense. He will be catching 80-100 balls at Arky or OU. It looks as if we are pot committed to run – and although Ash is only frosh – does not mean he will eventually be a good QB.

Why do I get the impression that DGB would of caught all those passes that Davis couldn’t handle! Yeah it might have been 2 or 3, but those could have been early game changers and gave Ash more confidence.

by kcmorse on Dec 29, 2011 11:00 AM CST reply actions

Maybe.

But those weren’t good throws. People like to dump on Davis (not saying you in particular) when he could have at least 10 touchdowns this year. That’s just the amount of times I remember him wide open down the field and the ball didn’t get to him.

by 40A on Dec 29, 2011 12:28 PM CST up reply actions

Davis plays scared ... think of one time he made a tough catch in traffic and took a hit. He will lose significant playing time next year.

One good thing is that if DGB saw Davis, he knows he can take his spot, right now.

I will change my legal name to "I. M. Harsin" if Texas scores on a Statue of Liberty or Hook-and-Ladder vs. OU."

I have an often scorned love affair with uber talented WRs that fail to deliver in crunch time

Started with Malcolm Williams and now Mike Davis…not ready to give up on Mike just yet.

by dukeoforange on Dec 29, 2011 12:48 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed....

we’re at our best when we can have some redshirts all over the field. Young’uns out there puts us at a disadvantage. CBrewer needs to redshirt, and badly. I wouldn’t mind if Hills/Brown/JB/Monroe carried the load next year and Gray sat out as well. Not a popular thought, I’m sure, but it’s best for the team.

by jmatt62 on Dec 29, 2011 11:02 AM CST reply actions

Great RB's almost never redshirt

Agree that most positions benefit from it, but RB is the position where it seems the least necessary.

In fact I can’t think of a RB in the Mack Brown era that redshirted and then turned out to be above average. I’m not sure I can think of one nationally in the last 10 years either.

The flipside of the redshirt argument is that it is really wasted if the player leaves early. We don’t want a repeat of what happened with Earl Thomas and J. Finley….redshirt and then leave after 3 years.

by Horncasting on Dec 29, 2011 11:10 AM CST up reply actions

I do believe Finley & Thomas had family issues

Pretty sure they left early due to circumstances at home. Check me on that. Don’t see that w/Gray or Brew.

by jmatt62 on Dec 29, 2011 11:35 AM CST up reply actions

You are right, but the question is whether you think Gray stays more than 3 years

I would bet the answer is no. It has been said that his dad is really concerned with the number of hits he has taken in high school and has specifically wanted to limit it in college (making our backfield with Brown/Bergeron attractive). Given that I think he goes to the NFL at his first opportunity.

by Horncasting on Dec 29, 2011 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

With the amount of touches the RB's are gonna get next year

Three running backs are going to be needed to keep them fresh and avoid the injury bug that bit the backfield from being overworked this season. Hopefully DJ Monroe can show some strong improvement in the off season to guide the young backfield like Fozzy did this year.
