Can I have link to this

I want to know exactly why they are in trouble.

Funny you posted this, I had to rewind what he said in the midst of doing dishes

I guess he hasn’t seen our young class that will be coming in. I guess he hasn’t realized that were turning into a well oiled machine with a National Championship looming around the corner!

by kcmorse on Dec 31, 2011 7:06 PM CST reply actions

The part about the championship is pretty optimistic

But it could happen. The class does look pretty good, but doesn’t necessarily offer a 2012 starter, with the possible exceptions of the juco signees, so the class may not drastically impact the team’s fortunes next season.

I assumed you didn't mean a BCS championship next season

But a maximum of four teams will compete in the BCSCG the next two seasons, and Texas really doesn’t look like it has the leadership or offensive aptitude to be one of them.

An outsider's perspective

I think you’ll be knockin on the door in 2013 and, assuming Mack gets the locker room intangibles ironed out, in 2014 Longhorn should be right there.
I think Diaz is the real deal. He will stay through 2014. Harsin’s (Boise’s) system has been proven to be effective.

I just started paying somewhat close attention to your program (thanks to BON). I can say, as a long time observer of college football, that I believe the biggest problem a program like UT’s faces is TOO much talent. Too many super talented guys trying to fill too few roster spots; an overemphasis on “recruiting”, not enough focus on development (or a lack of patience for development), whick leads to (cyclical) problems in the locker room. Such a problem to have! For instance, how will you keep B&B and Gray “happy” for the next three years?

Ash has a similar skill set to Kellen Moore, IMO. If he has a good head (and I don’t think this season was a fair test to judge that) I think he could be a good enough QB to get you where you want to go. But if your hot shot QB recruit is playing significant # of snaps in 2012 or 2013, then your “rotation” and “development” of talent (at QB) is out of whack.

And Mack has to quit spending so much time on the LHN.

Not sure how optimistic it is vs. just common sense.

Look at our schedule and tell me who we aren’t favored against next year? Wyoming (win), New Mexico (win), at Mississippi (likely win), Iowa St. (win), OU (without Jones, Broyles, etc. – likely win), at OSU (without Weeden, Blackmon, etc. – likely win), BU (without RGIII – win), at KU (win), at TT (likely win), TCU (likely win), at K-State (who knows?), WVU (who knows?).

Based on the way we were playing at the end of the year and likely improvements on offense, I think there’s a very real possibility we’re at 10-0 going into the K-State game. The conference is going to be down next year, and we are still going to be on the upswing. I think a BCS bowl at minimum and a real possibility of competing for the MNC.

To err is human...but humans have such low standards.

Miss, Iowa State, OU, OSU, and TCU?

Those aren’t wins or likely wins. They’re all tossups. Ole Miss is probably the closest thing to a definite win out of those, but Freeze is an excellent coach, and you never know how they’ll roll out that first big game under him. If Rhoads can beat a team that could’ve easily been in the BCS championship game this year, he can beat Texas next year. OU will more than likely have Jones, but even if not, it’s not like they won’t have Jaz Reynolds, Kenny Stills, etc., so they’re still likely to be a far better offense than UT’s. If you think OSU’s losses of Blackmon and Weeden are so detrimental, I’ll point you toward similar statements about the losses of Robinson and Bryant two years ago. TCU, well, it’s anyone’s guess how well they’ll transition to the big kid playground, but they’re certainly dangerous.

I guess we'll just have to revisit this in a year.

Admittedly, I know next to nothing about Ole Miss other than rampant comments around here to the effect of “aggie is going be a cellar-dweller with the likes of Ole Miss and Mississippi State!” That – and their 2-10 record this year – lead me to believe that that game is a likely win.

ISU – we’ve lost to them exactly once since the inception of the league, and everybody on the field for us was napping that year. Not likely to happen again in Austin.

OU – outlook not as rosy since Jones is coming back, but my prediction was based mostly on our defense being a bunch nastier next October than it was this past October.

OSU – agree to disagree. Gundy blew his wad this year. They may be good again, but I doubt it’s next season.

TCU – meh. Last time they came to Austin, with a top 20 ranking and spouting off about how they were the “real” best team in Texas, we stomped their guts out. Not worried about them this time around, either.

So, I guess minus a slightly updated view of the OU game (downgrade it from likely win to toss-up), I’m standing by my breakdown and my statement that “…there’s a very real possibility we’re at 10-0 going into the K-State game.”

“Possibility” is not “sure-thing” or even “likelihood,” but I still like our chances.

To err is human...but humans have such low standards.

I guess my point is chalking all those up as "win" or "likely win" isn't realistic

This is still a young team with serious QB, WR, TE, and even OL problems, and a raw offensive identity. While they could certainly iron out a lot of kinks by next year, it’s not a given, and those other teams will also have their opportunities to improve.

BTW, Oklahoma State may or may not be a national contender next year, but they’re going to have better and deeper talent than they have at any point in the Big 12 era even without Blackmon and Weeden. Chelf has been the top backup to Weeden for two full seasons, now and competing with him will be four-star recruits J.W. Walsh (remember him?) and Wes Lunt, although Lunt will probably redshirt. While Blackmon, Cooper, and Anyiam will be gone, remember what happened when they lost Dez Bryant and co.? Three-star recruit Blackmon immediately stepped up from 20 catches for 260yds. and 2TD as a redshirt freshman to 111 for 1782 and 20. It’s a proven system, and they have lots of talent waiting in the wings, including current contributors as well as C.J. Curry, who’s rumored to be their best WR recruit ever. Add in that they’re returning a lot of their two-deep on the OL, the outstanding RBs Joseph Randle and Jeremy Smith, and now Herschel Sims off his redshirt year, and I think they’re going to be pretty awesome on defense. Oh, and they return most of their defense. Their wad’s far from shot.

I see a patch of Gray

the Wildhorn returns in a big way taking some pressure off of our inadequate QBs.

NO new QB no championship.although I can see our way back to a 10 win season.

Why do we only seem to remember our last game?

I don’t know about being “in trouble”, but I think the guy has a point. The way you play most of the time, not at the best of times — that’s your identity, that’s what you can count on. We have consistently had serious offensive problems including a porous line, dreadful QB play, and unreliable receivers with problems getting separation. We saw some progress on the QB front in the Holiday Bowl and that’s obviously a good thing. But a single game doesn’t make a trend. Let me see Ash be a good game manager and ball protector for 3 games in a row (or maybe 3 games out of 4) and then I’ll believe that he’s turned a corner. Ditto with our OL and WR corps. We’re going to have to correct poor play across most of the offense to be contenders for the conference title.

OTOH, the good news is that we don’t have to be world beaters on offense to contend. I don’t subscribe to the common notion that you have to have a great QB to contend in the Big 12. Heck, if we just had a tiny incremental improvement on offense this year, we would have had our coveted 10 win season. Missouri and K-State were easily winnable with just a competent offense.

I understand where you're going with this

But I think it only holds true in the same season. Considering that we’ll have Spring workouts, Summer workouts, then Fall practice, I think it’s completely reasonable to believe that the offense (in it’s first year with many problem positions) will at the least improve somewhat, but more realistically, improve by leaps and bounds. I say that only because it doesn’t take much to improve on what we had this year. I’d bet the offense will be in the top 1/2 of the conference next year, possibly even the top 1/3.

Texas' offense has always been flashy ... until now.

But the power offense and methodical drives have really looked good this year, even to the point of dominating a few conference foes already. The UT boys will only get better at it from here on out.

TV network politics at work here.....

CBS’ product is the SEC. Their main rival in televising college football is ABC/ESPN where a major product is the Big 12 and Texas, particularly where ESPN is concerned, Brando and Tillman were simply being loyal employees with Brando taking a shot at the rival product and Tillman pumping up the SEC’s incoming member.

Both takes were ignorant (though Tillman himself generally is not). Brando has always been an SEC honk. That is a primary reason for his CBS gig.

Contrast this statement with that of Jessie Palmer on the Holiday Bowl broadcast that Texas will be better at every position on offense in 2012. Palmer spent several days getting to know the Texas program. He is also a ABC/ESPN employee.
