"Talking to some of the (current OU) players, no one had a lot of positive things to say about OU," Edwards said. "It was more, like, negative."

Additionally, Edwards said, he wasn't thrilled with the "vibe" of Norman.

"It was a real small town with really no social life there," he said. "After football season, you want to be somewhere you can socialize and all that stuff." - ESPiN Insider ($)

DGB never made it to norman.hopefully Mario does the right thing and commits to TEXAS.it is great when players realize what a s#%thole zero u is.DGB would help our offense so much because of his size and skill.i really belive we are just solid play from the qb`s away from winning the big 12.

Wow

How awkward to have your dad posting about your coach at 3a.m. He did apologize “Had a bit of meltdown publicly last night, which actually serves no good purpose. It was poor taste”

However, how shitty is it that Big Game Bob didn’t let Miller play in his final game as a senior. That sucks, and no wonder his dad was pissed.

I want to know which players allegedly failed drug tests but still played.

Miller did play in the game

He just didn’t get any catches. That said, I’m sure that fact will have little impact on how “shitty” Bob is in your eyes ;)

Ain't that the damn truth

A smidge diffrence

If Miller did get to play but just didn’t get any touches that is just how it is. At least he had his chances. To not play at all would be b.s. for a senior who has contributed like him.

His dad was clearly way off base regardless since you don’t go publically bad mouthing your kid’s school and coaches, especially to other recruits, no matter what.

Big game Bob is still a jerk. I hate how he handles his pressers and refuses to answer questions and flat out lie about who is or isn’t healthy. I understand not wanting to expose weaknesses, etc., but he just comes off as a smug jerk that thinks he is better than everyone else.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

Stoops is pretty much a control freak

But, I will readily admit that he is a heck of a head coach. I was hoping that he’d leave and go to tOSU to get him out of our hair.

Mack never posted a new depth chart after the Baylor game. The official UT site still has the Baylor Game depth chart up with Case McCoy listed as the starter. Kind of strange and not really fair to the real starters who earned their spot..

Edwards has all but eliminated OU

and its down to Texas, FSU, and LSU. LSU supposedly will get the last visit on January 20th, and Edwards is set to make his choice by National Signing Day. We’re in very good shape. He loves the Giles and Diaz work their defensive ends and line play in general. He’s also open to spinning down to DT if he’s needed to. As of today he’s currently at 6-3.5ft tall and about 291 lbs.

I’d give it a 65% shot to land him.

Sounds fairly accurate to me.

I recall some Sooner player, honestly don’t remember who, who said during a regular season where they had suffered a tough loss or two, that “They really needed to get back to winning, because if you don’t win at Oklahoma, it’s not a good place to be”, or something to that effect.

I took it two different ways: It was a comment on the OU staff’s “hard coaching” style, where negative reinforcement is used heavily; it was a comment on why players go to Oklahoma, which is to win big and win championships. If you’re not winning championships, you’re left with a university that is nothing special academically (unless you are into petroleum engineering) and that is located in a wasteland called Oklahoma.

Players don’t go to OU for the social experiences or the college life or the academics, they go because they want to win championships. When that isn’t happening, I imagine it is incredibly difficult to be positive about why your college experience as a student-athlete.

by Beergut on Jan 1, 2012 1:00 PM CST reply actions

To say there is no college experience or social life in Norman

Is unbelievably asinine. You’ve either never stayed there for more than 2 days, never tried to go out while you were there, or never been there period. Here, I’ll do the same. College Station is a giant trailer park. Austin a shithole.

by KratosWasASooner on Jan 1, 2012 4:16 PM CST up reply actions

Dude.

I live in Midwest City, and IT’S better than Norman. Campus Corner sucks, traffic is terrible, there’s nothing EVER interesting going on down there BESIDES a football game. It sucks.

by 40A on Jan 1, 2012 4:35 PM CST up reply actions

“Austin a shithole.”

This just shows how much of a Sooner you actually are. You can call Austin a lot of things, but this is not one of them.

It was sarcasm.

He was insulting the two college towns without reasoning, just as beergut did. I’m sure he doesn’t actually think Austin is a “shithole”.

Well, duh. I have no reading comprehension skills today, do I? And I have no excuse since I am not hung over.

My apologies to Kratos.

OU's new recruiting agle: we have nothing go on so you can concentrate on football

http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1313829

Hilarious story that TE McNamara from San Diego bascially confirms Mario Edwards’ position, but committed to OU for that very reason. He bascially says he chose Norman for its lack of a social life; that way he can concentrate on footballs. I like the way the Sooners take a negative and make it a positive.

Kratos, is that you?!

W/ your history, we know it was a jest. However, if you make another 30 or 40 comments like this, we’re gonna have to start treating you like the enemy. That comment was like insulting someone’s girlfriend or wife!

by robthecob on Jan 1, 2012 5:11 PM CST up reply actions

30 or 40 more?

Man, I got a lot of work to do!

On a serious note, I’ve never been to either Austin or College Station, and I’m pretty positive I would walk out of both places with minimal feeling of “that was a cool place.” You don’t know shitholes until you go through places like Soper or Boswell in Oklahoma. For a “small city”, Denison is about the closest I’ve seen to a shithole with no social/night life.

I never lived in Norman, but I’ve visited a few times, and I’ve always had a blast. Maybe it was because I had some good friends to hang out with, maybe it’s because I’m an OU homer, but there is definitely fun to be had.

by KratosWasASooner on Jan 1, 2012 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

What's up with this 2012 Kratos?

If you think that you could visit and party in Austin and leave with "minimal feelings of ‘that was a cool place’ " then you have a learning to do. You may not remember how much fun you had and you may leave worn out, but “cool” is and understatement for Austin.

We're Texas, We're not OK.

by Wrangler86 on Jan 2, 2012 1:10 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I typed it wrong.

I meant at the very least that’s how I would feel. I have no doubt Austin would be a fun place, every division 1 college town I’ve been to has been a good time. Norman, Stillwater, Fayetteville. Hmmm… guess I haven’t been to too many.

by KratosWasASooner on Jan 2, 2012 4:22 AM CST up reply actions

I grew up & lived most of my life in Dallas ...

… and have lived in small towns in West & Southeast Texas. Never actually lived in Austin, College Station, Lubbock, etc… but have visited and stayed for awhile, literally, hundreds of times – particularly Austin. And Austin is DEFINITELY a fun, cool, entertaining place far above any other. I’m not a drinker or partyer but I know, from hearsay, that the night life is great. Rather, I know more of the uniqueness of Austin and what is there for a resident or visitor to do recreationally & culturally in the city and in the surrounding region. I’ve literally gone Toobing and to the Symphony, all in the same day. It has a very classy eclectic Southwestern flavor to it & the weather is commonly beautiful at any time year-round. The only places I know of that could compare to UT Austin would be any interesting university located a stone’s throw from a beautiful beach. Only then could you get a comparison to the beauty of the Austin area. College Station, on the other hand, is just a big ugly field in the middle of the East Texas forest.

However, I guess your regional surroundings are what you make of ’em. Having a great group of friends to hang out with would make anyplace beautiful (College Station, excepted, though).

FSU

I went to the OU/FSU game. Tallahassee is hard to get to logistically from some places (like Houston) due to its small airport. Plus, it is a lot more like Norman in population than Austin. There is an interesting story as to why it is the capital, it isn’t because it was the happening place. It was because it was half way between the two major happening places. Per wikipedia-

It was chosen as it was roughly equidistant from St. Augustine and Pensacola, which had been the capitals of the Spanish and British colonies of East Florida and West Florida, respectively.

If Mario doesn’t like the small feel of Norman he won’t like FSU much better. FSU does have a beautiful campus and I really liked the visit. But, there isn’t much there other than the campus.

ive been to tall and thought it looked exactly like all that area in the south (miss, alabama, panhandle)...

…my brother worked as a post-doc at FSU for 2 yrs. He HATED it there. i think he described it as hell for him. one thing of note to mention, which coming from him is significant since he never says this kind of stuff, is that he noticed people are sorta racist in the pan-handle in general and a little in tall.
anyway, from what ive heard and seen, it is NOT a place i would want to spend the best 4 yrs of my life :)

Sounds like chances are good to land Edwards

People have been talking about problems with OU for weeks……just don’t bring it up over there

And I seem to remember all shots they took at Texas’ program woes at the beginning of the season. Everything is cyclical. You can be up a few years and down in an instant.

They don't allow anything that isn't 100% OU supportive

So, I guess they will be transferring to a new school site.

Austin

Austin’s actually the exception as far as college towns are concerned. Most college towns are more like Norman and collie station, smaller places with a few campus watering holes, and otherwise, the same plastic restaurants, big box stores, strip malls, and moderately-priced hotels. If you’re not from collie station or Norman, close your eyes and they’d look a lot the same when you open your eyes.

UT just happens to be located in one of the nicest mid-sized cities in the country. Austin’s got the nightlife, it’s centrally-located to even larger places, there’s plenty of recreation, whatever your choice, great restaurants, a live-and-let-live vibe, and I haven’t even touched on the eye candy. Rural would describe most of the Big XII, which is fine if you like a small town atmosphere to go with your land grant college. Austin is the one destination location in the whole conference. It’s like the Hotel California…everybody checks in…nobody checks out.

All of this is by way of saying it’s apples and oranges to compare Austin to Norman, Lubbock, Stillwater, or any of the other “scenic” sites in the Big XII. I left out collie station on purpose…that bunch has already checked out on their way to the SEC.

love oklahoma

but i lived there 5 years. Love Arkansas and have traveled there often. Austin of course in all sincerity, is one of the great cities in the US. (and that is not a "homer’ way of talking. Austin has great music that it is truly famous for, great restaurants, great landscape, state capital, great and beautiful university and great history. And the prettiest women in the US.

College Station, my friends, sucks. Seriously. A*M is a great institution with a great history, some of it even football related. It has no native culture, other than farming (a noble pursuit i agree but not much of a draw to your average young college football star), no music to be proud of, no 6th street, no restaurants other than that damn Dixie chicken thing that truly is a 5th rate place. It does not even have one truly great BBQ place and that is a requirement for any Texas city. It has no Mexican Food that any one can be proud of.

Honest to God the very best thing about College Station is a 6-6 football team. What does that say about the place. And what may say even more about the place, they are PROUD, honest to God Proud, that their culture and way of life is a better match for the SEC then it is for Austin.
